Wollstonecraft Mary. 1759 1797 Jacobs Diane.
HER OWN WOMAN: The Life of Mary Wollstonecraft.
New York:: Simon & Schuster 2001. Fine in fine dust jacket. First printing. A well-written interesting and definitive biography of this pioneering 18th century feminist best known for her "Vindication of the Rights of Woman" - her plea for female independence borne out of her bitter personal experience. Included in this book is an account of Mary's helped her sister escape from an abusive marriage her successful literary career her travels to Paris to witness the Terror following the French Revolution the birth of her illegitimate daughter and her marriage to William Godwin before dying after the birth of her second daughter Mary Shelley. Based on several new first sources among which are Joseph Johnson's letters only discovered in 1990 Johnson was her publisher and Thomas Paine's and other letters referring to her American lover Gilbert Imlay. The letters reveal a more human side of Wollstonecraft- that of a woman who assumed much of the financial responsibility of her siblings but also a woman revelling on love - and one with a sense of humor. In a letter to Imlay her lover when she is trying to come up with a word to name their relationship she poses the suggestion 'shall I ask the little twitcher' Illustrated with photographs.
