In 1871 hide hunters swarmed over the ranges diminishing original herds of 60 to 75 million buffalo to about 40 million. Then in a dozen years the hunters reduced the animals to fewer than 1000. The dramatic history of this butchery is told here in comprehensive detail for the first time. Battles between hunters and Indians are described. The book also tells of buffalo hunting for sport and describes Buffalo Bill's killing of buffaloes to feed the men who were building a railroad across the plains but most of its pages are devoted to the hide hunters who mainly were responsible for the near extermination of this stately beast.
