‎Whitman Walt‎

‎Photogravure Broadside: "WE HAVE FREQUENTLY PRINTED THE WORD DEMOCRACY'‎

‎Brookline MA: David R Godine SCARCE a haunting and prophetic broadside Whitman's words written in 1871 following the Civil War as relevant today as then. 22" w x 30 1/2" h featuring a 20" w x 19/12" h photogravure printed by Joh. Enschede Zonen Haarlem Holland portraying Walt Whitman in profile enlarged reproduction of 1891 photograph of Walt Whitman by Thomas Eakin at head of text. Underneath the quote taken from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas": " We have frequently printed the word Democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps quite unawaken'd notwithstanding the resonance and many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come from pen or tongue. It is a great word whose history I suppose remains unwritten because that history has yet to be enacted. It is in some sort younger brother of another great and often-used word NATURE whose history also waits unwritten. WALT WHITMAN". ‎ROBIN HOOD Vs. McCarthy Pamphlet Green Feather Movement Order of Robin Hood‎

‎No Place: Green Feather Movement RARE No Place No Date but Bloomington Indiana March 1954. The first call to action of the "Order of Robin Hood" which became known as the Green Feather Movement an early college activist movement rising from the campus of Indiana University against censorship and McCarthyism. On Nov. 13 1953 Mrs. Thomas J. White of the Indiana Textbook Commission called for a ban of Robin Hood in all school books for promoting communism because he stole from the rich to give to the poor. In response a group of 5 Indiana University students -Bernard Bray Mary Dawson Edwin Napier Blas Davila and Jeanine Carter- came together after gathering a bag of chicken feathers and dyeing them green to represent Robin Hood. They then spread them throughout campus in response to this censorship and the Red Scare of McCarthyism. The Green Feather Movement inspired student activism across the country with groups forming at Harvard Michigan Illinois Wisconsin Purdue and UCLA heralding the much broader and potent student protests of the 60s and 70s.
