Privately Printed Germany 1945. Sm. 4to. on laid paper; original printed wrappers wire-stitched as issued upper wrapper with divisional crest in yellow and black lower wrapper with small unobtrusive stain in one corner a remarkably clean bright copy. A key component of Second Army the famous West Country Division captured Mount Picon forced the crossing of the Seine were the first British troops to fight in Germany and turned the tide in the Reichswald enabling the Allies to close with the Rhine. As part of Horrocks' 30 Corps the division also took part in the headlong rush to Nijmegen in GARDEN. Locally printed probably on a commissioned press this humble pamphlet is nevertheless a moving tribute to one of the most famous British fighting units of WWII. The Fifes in South Africa. Being a History of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry in the South African War, 1900-1901. FIRM, CLEAN COPY
8vo., First and Sole Edition, on laid paper, with portrait frontispiece, 7 plates, 4 illustrations and maps in the text, and folding map, preliminaries lightly foxed; original khaki cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked and lattered in gilt and black, gilt top, red endpapers, uncut, joints mildly rubbed, some mild age-soiling else a very good, bright, clean copy. The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry served as 20th Company Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa from April 1900 to June 1901. They were commanded variously by Hunter, Hutton, Clements and Cunningham. In December 1900 the 20th was attacked at Nooitgedacht where the British sustained heavy casualties and the Fifes were reduced to half strength. The remnants joined Cunningham's force to the end of January 1901 and were then attached to Col. Benson's column in south western Transvaal. In April 1901 the Fifes regrouped at full strength at Bloemfontein, joining Col. Pilcher's column in Orange River Colony and returning home in May 1901.The work includes a nominal roll and campaign history. VERY SCARCE. First World War: British Military Mission to Italy. Four Autograph Letters Signed from 'Charlie' to 'Nonna' with reference to 'intrigues' his superior Delmé-Radcliffe and a visit to Austrian trenches in 'the Caroo'.
All four on letterheads of the 'Missione Militare di Sua Maestà Britannica Addetta al Comando Supremo Italia' British Military Mission Italian Army in the Field . 30 December 1916; 10 January and 16 and 20 June 1917. Four interesting and evocative letters. The identity of the writer is not known. All but the third letter are addressed to 'Dearest Nonna' who appears to be married to 'George' and living in Viareggio. ONE: 30 December 1916. 2pp. 4to. 'This place is simply a nest of intrigues and I wish I had some of your dear familys clever brains to sort things out a bit & put them right. I loathe the double-faced dealing necessary to combat intrigues and am afraid I may lose my temper one day & tell them what I think of them - & that wd be fatal. Besides one wants the subtle brains of your sex to <truly> unravel matters in such a tangled skein. Can't you “Marconi†me some' He continues with reference to a visit by 'the nice 16 year old son of Ninettes friend' there is a further reference to 'Carlo & Ninette' who has invited him 'out to Martignacco'. Long signed pencil postscript. TWO: 10 January 1917. 2pp. 4to. 'Delme Radcliffe Brig. Gen.Sir Charles Delmé-Radcliffe 1864-1937 Chief of the Mission is back from Rome but news of the Conference is not allowed to leak out tho' I suppose we shall hear about it in time. A Col. Wyndham our Mil Attache at Berne who was in the Rifle Bde has come to stay a few days & I found his most amusing & interesting over the German propaganda in Switzerland. He says that the news from Germany is most cheering for us – that Germany will be starved out unless peace supervenes in 2 months!!!' He has been meeting 'such a lot' of her friends and mentions 'Gulinalli who is a-de-c to a Genl. Sani' 'Young Boris' and 'â€<Nernia Giglieri> whose name I remember in Florence some time back'. He will describe 'a glorious day in the Caroo' he has had later. THREE: 16 June 1917. 2pp. 4to. He has not been able to write because of 'difficulties here'. Delmé-Radcliffe 'D. R.' has been away in England for a fortnight'. He describes the trip to 'Caroo' 'wandering along the banks of a nice little trout stream with men bathing in it'. He took 'a peep from behind sandbags into a line of Austrian trenches where I wd have willingly played <> to try to pick off the Austrian if he had come anywhere in sight – but no such luck!!!' FOUR: 20 June 1917. 1p. 4to. He has not 'been very well lately' and has 'decided to ask for a Medical Board & later leave home for a spell'. He had 'half intended going to Viareggio' but thinks his own 'home air' will do him more good 'as it will be more of a complete change' but hopes to be able to manage a visit to her later. The letter concludes with a reference to 'Ninette' and in the hope that 'you & George are very well.' But do you really think we can without danger send them Vitamins and milk Can we be sure they will get it' The answer to this question has been given time after time by the American organizations that supervise the distribution; they know that the children and they alone receive the food; and they have many touching letters of thanks from the children themselves. Here is one of them" from the preface. Original wrappers lithographed in blue red and black. Light blue comb binding. . 8 in. x 5 in. . With seven full-page color lithographs. Aside from the printed preface text is reproduced from handwriting with children's handwriting above in French and the translator's handwriting below in English. The signatures of the children are reproduced on the last few pages Some light offsetting from color plates. A very good bright copy of a lovely book produced by French children during World War II. The present work was written and illustrated by a class of French children from five to six years. The story follows a drop of vitamin personified as a friendly American girl who travels across the ocean to aid children in occupied France. Le canon central est Pliant et de forme rectangulaire horizontale (format déplié : 38 cm de haut x 61 cm de large - Format plié : 21,6 cm de large x 38 de haut), les deux autres de forme rectangulaire verticale (format : 24,8 cm de large x 33,4 cm de haut), Le canon central est composé de trois espaces scandé par un décor (décoré à la main) aux guirlandes de fleurs et Anges avec aux pieds des personnages bibliques avec leurs attibuts : MOÏSE et sa Table de la Loi, Saint-MARC assis sur un Lion avec un livre ouvert, Un Aigle avec Saint-JEAN l'évangéliste, Saint-LUC assis sur un Boeuf, Saint-PIERRE tenant ses Clefs à la Main, Saint MATTHIEU et son Ange, Saint-PAUL et son Epée, Saint-LAURENT en habit de Thuriféraire avec son brule-encens etc... avec des Anges dans la partie supérieure. Le canon dit du Dernier Evangile : le texte en latin est encadré à gauche et à droite de 2 Colonnes sculptées avec motif floral en couleurs surmontés chacune d'un Ange tenant une guirlande de feuilles verte au dessus du texte avec une Urne dorée au centre. Minor damage at lower left corner with some flaking of the paper. Slight age-toning to the colors. Framed in an elaborate gilt composite contemporary frame with acrylic glaze. In this artistic composition of the events in Santiago the oval profile portrait inset in the upper right corner depicts U.S. Rear Admiral Schley the victor of the sea battle. Schley was originally not included in Admiral Sampson's reports of the battle due to ill feelings between the two men. However the truth of who was in command of the actual battle were soon known and Schley became a national hero with a promotion to rear Admiral. . J. Hoover & Sons unknown

Three documents all in fair condition lightly aged and worn each of the total of six leaves with three later punch holes to the inner margins of the leaves. On the same browned thin wove paper. The source of these items is uncertain but they appear to date from the first decades of the twentieth century. ONE: 'Disposition of Troops in the Canal Defences 15th January 1915.' 4pp. folio. Beginning with: 'G.O.C. Canal Defences. - Major-General A. Wilson. Chief Staff Officer Canal Defences. - Br.-General A. H. Bingley.' Followed by the 'Troops' and 'Posts in Sector' for three sections as well as the 'Advanced Ordnance Depot' and 'Defence of Railway and Sweet Water Canal' 'General Reserve Camp Moascar'. The British Military Cemetery at Solymár Hungary. Long typescript titled 'The Budapest War Cemetery' including a 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' with letter by the Hungarian author and photographs and negatives.
Covering letter dated from Budapest Hungary 8 April 1985. 27pp. 8vo. The article on 'The Budapest War Cemetery' is 7pp. 8vo and the accompanying 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' is 21pp. 8vo. There is also a page of 'Abbreviations to the Register'. A few manuscript emendations. The covering letter is addressed to 'David' and is effusive in its offer of further assistance the author urging 'David' to rewrite the piece as he sees fit. It is signed faintly and undecipherably. The author writes in good but not entirely idiomatic English and has gone to some trouble. The article describes the wartime background to the establishment of 'The English Cemetery at Solymár' from the first man buried there Flight Sergeant Gordon G. Pemberton an Australian pilot of a Wellington bomber shot down on the night of 3 April 1944. The 'Register' lists the 205 graves each with all the information to be found on the tombstone. Also present are four strips of negatives with one larger negative of a single image and a contact sheet strip reproducing the 35 pictures on the negative strips. The last is annotated on the reverse in pencil. Also included are three black and white photographs described as 'three bad prints' in the letter: one of the cemetery in snow and the other two of Pemberton's crashed Wellington bomber. Bulletin IV as offered was the last of a four bulletin series "Abstracts Translations and Reviews of Recent Literature on the Subject of the Reconstruction and Reeducation of the Disabled Soldier and Sailor:. and was replaced by a printed montly magazine "to be called CARRY ON The Disabled Soldier's and Sailor's Magazine". The Foreword notes that the new name "CARRY ON" was suggested by Mary Roberts Rinehart.<br /> <br /> Bulletin IV May 25 1918 is the second part of a detailed report "The Story of the Crippled Soldier's Progress from Disablement to Replacement in Civil Life" and reports on work in Italy Belgium Canada and other Countries. The previous Bulletin No III. April 15 1918 is more commonly seen and is a companion volume to the current offering dealing with the same topic but in only 96 pages and covering the work in France and Great Britain. <br /> <br /> The introductory remarks are particulary interesting as they work through the many challenges facing cruppled soldiers as they are treated and released into civilian life. Many of the issues could have come from today's headlines. While medical technology has advanced considerably in 100 years many of the same psychological issues remain. The Campaign in Mesopotamia British Army First World War. Duplicated Typescript apparently contemporary of satirical poem by British soldier by ‘A Tommy’ titled ‘Alphabet of Mesopotamia’.
Without date or place but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. This poem is said to be an earlier work by ‘A Tommy’ the pseudonymous author of the collection ‘If I Goes West’ published in London by Harrap in 1918. WorldCat has no entries to support a second claim: that the present poem was published in 1917 with the subtitle ‘Verses written by a “Tommy†who has fought suffered and triumphed in Mesopotamia and is still on active service there’. While there is no indication that the poem has ever been published in its entirety extracts from it appeared in ‘The Bystander’ 27 November 1916; and ‘The Near East’ 6 July 1917; the latter headed ‘An Alphabet from Mesopotamia’ being preceded by the following: ‘A member of our Fighting Forces in Mesopotamia has composed some verses which he entitles “ The Alphabet of Mesopotamia.†Through the kindness of a correspondent we are allowed to reproduce here some specimens’. There may also be a reference in Catherine W. Reilly’s 1978 bibliography ‘English Poetry of the First World War’. Duplicated typescript titled ‘ALPHABET OF MESOPOTAMIA.’ 2pp foolscap 8vo. Text complete on two leaves of air mail paper glued together. Apparently contemporary and with the look of an item that has been handed around the mess room. Twenty-six four-line stanzas: one for each letter of the alphabet apart from a joint stanza for S and T and ending with an ‘ENVOI’. The first stanza reads: ‘ “A†Was an apple that grew so they say In the Garden of Eden down Qurnah way Till Eve came along and ate it one day And got thrown out of Mesopotamia.’ The poem includes the following stanzas: ‘ “F†Stands for Fritz who flies in the sky To bring down the brute we’ve many a try But the shells that we shoot seem to all pass him by And fall --- on Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “J†Is the jam with the label that lies And states that in Paris it won the first prize But out here we use it for catching the flies That swarm in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “U†Is the Lake we call Umm-el-Brahm And guards our flanks from all possible karm sic And waters Gorringe’s Barley Farm In the middle of Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “V†Is the Victory we won at Dujailah I heard of it first from a friend who’s a sailor Who read it in Reuter’s on board a mahela On the Tigris in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “W†Stands for the wonder and pain With which we regard the infirm and insane Old Indian Generals who guide the campaign Which we’re waging in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “Y†Is the yearning we feel every day For a passage to Basra and thence to Bombay If we get there we’ll see that we stay right away From this wilderness - Mesopotamia.’ Without date or place, but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. unknown

My intention is therefore to relate very imperfectly no doubt memory is so unfaithful the vicissitudes in the midst of which I lived during four months of a campaign at the height of winter and the impressions I was able to bring back. I wish to preserve in this account an entire truth a character of frankness and authenticity that removes the slightest doubt."</em></p>
