Mrs. Moulton was a noted Philadelphia socialite & philanthropist who along with her husband summered in Poland Spring during the Gilded Age. Byron P. Moulton 1836-1909 was one of the owners of the Reyburn Hunter & Co. lightning rod manufacturing company. First edition inscribed of this account of how a pair of revolvers were lost when Col. Charles F. Manderson 1837-1911 of the 19th Ohio Volunteer Regiment Ohio Infantry was captured by the Confederates after the battle of Chattanooga. He offers an excellent first hand account of the battles of Murfreesboro Stone River and of Chatanooga as well as recounting how he eventually recovered the pair after becoming the U.S. Senator for Nebraska from 1883 to 1895. Dickinson 1800 -1866 an outstanding orator who traveled widely throughout New England and the Middle States delivering speeches on this topic. <br /> <br /> It was Dickinson who gave one of the rallying speeches immediately after the fall of Fort Sumter at Union Square in New York in April of 1861 to enormous crowds which stretched from Broadway and 14th Street all the way down to the Battery.<br /> <br /> 8vo 24pp. Publisher's advertisements Prospectus for the Household edition of the Works of Charles Dickens inside of both wrappers as well as the rear titled "War Publications". Wrappers are toned; some minor soiling to one page opening; vertical creases from the pamphlet having been folded; only traces of foxing. <br /> <br /> An interesting address delivered in Pennsylvania by a former Confederate officer who was present at the Crater. There are surprisingly few Confederates who were eyewitnesses at the Battle of the Crater that wrote about it. A reasonably nice copy of a surprisingly uncommon pamphlet Featherston was captain of Company F 9th Alabama Infantry. This address was delivered at the M. E. Church in Pottsville PA on Wednesday April 18 1906. Two engravings include the frontispiece of the soldiers at the Petersburg mine and depiction of the monument to the 48th at Petersburg on the recto of the last leaf. Laid in but not issued with the pamphlet is tri-fold reproduction of Michler's map of the entrenched lines in the immediate front of Petersburg stamped: "O.D.S.S. Co Petersburg May 24 1906." This copy presented to Mr. Charles A. Black of Petersburg VA by the Survivors Association 48th Regt. Quite rare with only Dornbusch citing it in the standard references. It is cited in Haynes but a search of the Library of Virginia's catalog shows that it is no longer held by the Library. In fact only the Huntington is reporting ownership according to OCLC. Rubbing to extremities including some chipping to the spine ends; corners frayed; boards have been discreetly reattached; largely a clean copy and free of foxing but for several preliminary and terminal leaves. <br /> <br /> Coulter calls this "a well-considered reliable account of what an observant and intelligent Englishman saw during a three-months journey from one end of the Confederacy to the other" Coulter 175. And while Fremantle was sympathetic to the Confederacy and the enthusiasm and patriotism of soldiers and civilians he "did not fail to record some uncomplimentary observations." Nevins writes "Fully deserving of its reputation as the best commentary on the wartime South by an English visitor" CWB I 91 NY edition. Two Manuscript Letters Signed by a New Jersey Soldier to His Family Describing Conditions in Virginia.
Three leaves two 8 x10 sheets and one 5x10 text on all sides and comes with typed transcripts. Normal aging and browning and a few tears at folds. The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark New Jersey who was the son of English immigrants and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal at the time these letters were written. The letters talk about the desolation of the Virginia countryside. "Not a fence or a decent house is to be seen for miles… the black remains of Camp fires with the filth of the many camps of both armies are seen on most every farm. I tell you Va. is suffering for her folly." The letters are from Alexandria and Stafford Court House Virginia. See guide to Roden family papers at the William L. Clements Library.

Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon
<p>Showing Union troops arriving in Philadelphia from New Jersey via ferry and marching in formation towards the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon cheered on by Philadelphians. Text at the bottom lists members of the committee and men willing to accept donations for the saloon. This image became a choice souvenir for soldiers passing through Philadelphia.</p> <b>CIVIL WAR.</b>Print. <i>Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon of Philadelphia</i>. In period frame 35 x 29 in. <p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was organized in South Philadelphia in 1861 by grocer Barzilla S. Brown. He began informally distributing food to Union troops traveling through Philadelphia an important rail and steamer hub. The relief effort became official on May 27 1861. The saloon provided soldiers with food drink stamps and paper and offered traveling troops a place to rest. This initial effort differed in some ways from the later Sanitary Fairs that contributed to the care of sick and wounded soldiers. At this point the civilian members were catering to the needs of healthy new recruits.</p><p>In September the Refreshment Saloon added a hospital to aid sick and wounded troops. The saloon supported itself through donations of food clothing cash and later through admission cost to view the Confederate navy vessel <i>Ram</i> which was captured in 1863. After providing social and medical services for four years the saloon closed in late 1865.</p><p><b>James Fuller Queen</b> 1820-1886 apprenticed to learn lithographic draftsmanship. He drew a large variety of lithographs for large printing houses of Wagner & McGuigan Thomas Sinclair and P. S. Duval. He drew views of buildings cities scenic attractions newsworthy events portraits sheet music covers diplomas illustrations for magazines and other images. He also became an outstanding chromolithographer. His view of the "Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon" is one of Queen's most complex works and perhaps the one for which he is best known. He later drew the United States Sanitary Commission Fair in Philadelphia.</p><p><b>Thomas S. Sinclair</b> c. 1805-1881 was born in the Orkney Islands of Scotland and studied lithography in Edinburgh and other cities. He started his own printing firm in Philadelphia in 1838. He was among the first in Philadelphia to experiment with color lithography. From 1854 to 1859 his brother joined him in the firm of Thomas Sinclair & Co. Later his son worked with him in Thomas Sinclair & Son. He published three different hand-colored lithographs by Queen of Brown's Refreshment Saloon and its friendly rival William M. Cooper's Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon in 1861.</p> Thomas Sinclair

In it Laboulaye places unsparing blame on the South: "The South has found numerous and skillful advocates in France and England. They have presented her cause as that of justice and liberty. They have proclaimed the right of separation and have not quailed even before the necessity of apologizing for slavery. To-day these arguments begin to loose sic their force. Thanks to a few writers who do not chaffer with. the great interests of humanity—thanks above all to M. be Gasparin light has begun to break forth. We know now what to think of the origin and character of the rebellion. To every impartial observer it is now evident that the wrong lies wholly with the South" p. 10. The Signatures:<br /> <br /> The present collection includes two large displays of signatures on sheets featuring numerous small boxes printed onto them filled in by each individual with their name and a location perhaps their current residences. The effect these documents give is the impression of an informal assortment of hand-written calling cards amassed after a social function of West Point alumni. Predominately the sheets are signed by most of the Class of 1854 a fateful group who were soon be divided by the impending Civil War. Beyond this outstanding group other graduating classes are represented as well as certain individuals who were not graduates of the USMA but no less salient figures of wartime America-including Albert J. Myer inventor of wigwag signalling and James Wiley Magoffin lessor for the land upon which Fort Bliss would be built.<br /> <br /> The terminus ad quem for the collection of signatures is most likely 1854 the earliest death of any signee in this case John L. Grattan who died after encountering Sioux troops in the Dakota Territory. Yet a number of signees are from later graduating classes-so either if the signatures were assembled all on one date these individuals were still current students or possibly these sheets represents a longer project of collecting the signatures. <br /> The providences of those who signed these papers alone reflect the many sacrifices made by the servicemen. Michael Ryan Morgan Class of '54 survived the War retired in 1897 and lived to be nearly 80 and Albert J. Myer lived on to propagate his widely-successful wig-wag flag signalling system across the world. William Dorsey Pender and Stephen Hinsdale Weed both Class of '54 perished as so many did at Gettysburg in the early days of July 1863-only three decades of age each. John T. Magruder Class '57 by solemn contrast was killed only one year after his graduation from West Point; the Sacramento Daily Union edition of 17 August 1858 published the notice:<br /> <br /> Information has been received of the sudden death of Lieut. Magruder of Washington City while on his way to Great Salt Lake with the Utah army. His death was caused by another man a quarrel having arose between them which resulted in the shooting of Lieut. Magruder. His parents reside at Washington.<br /> <br /> Yet unlike his peers who would shortly be fractionalised among the Union and Confederate armies Magruder never knew the domestic horror of the Civil War-neither the extent of violence on American soil nor the growing schism between his fellow class-men.<br /> <br /> An enumeration of each of the 53 signees is provided below along with brief biographical details.<br /> <br /> Two West Point Illustrations from Signed JEB Stuart Scrapbook - A Fine Map in Ink by Alexander Stewart Webb and a Watercolour Study:<br /> <br /> In a largely dilapidated scrapbook owned by JEB Stuart signed faintly in pencil "JEB Stuart June 1853" the summer between his Junior and Senior years at West Point two impressive illustrations have been preserved.<br /> The first is a topographic map in ink by Alexander Stewart Webb Class of '55 JEB Stuart's underclassman by one year. Brevetted Brigidier General and Major General on 13 March 1865 Webb was recognised "for gallant and meritorious services in the campaign terminating with the surrender of the insurgent army under Gen. Lee." and his wartime letters are now held at Yale University's Beinecke Library see "Webb Samuel Blatchley" in Appleton p. 403. The present drawing possibly depicting an aerial view of either Trophy Point or Constitution Island is remarkable for the meticulous line shading to capture the region's elevation and natural features.<br /> <br /> The second illustration a miniature watercolour study in sepia offers a scenic view from the Plain at Trophy Point overlooking the water with Constitution off to the right in the background. Signed "Merrill" it is feasibly by Lewis Merrill Class of '55 based on proximity to JEB Stuart's time at West Point but this is uncertain.<br /> Both of these images from JEB Stuart's personal collection capture the natural beauty and early history of USMA West Point.<br /> <br /> ___________<br /> <br /> West Point signature displays c. 1854. 2 pages on 2 folia 13 x 10¾ in; framed: 23 x 20 ¾ in. Good. <br /> <br /> This print depicts the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon located at the southwest corner of Swanson and Washington Avenues in Philadelphia during the American Civil War. "A rather important print published by subscription probably his only one" Peters. <br /> Here is the Library of Congress description: "This print depicts the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon located at the southwest corner of Swanson and Washington Avenues in Philadelphia during the American Civil War. The saloon was a volunteer relief agency supported by the citizens of Philadelphia which provided meals hospital care and washing sleeping and writing facilities to military personnel refugees and freedmen throughout the war. The print shows soldiers cheered by civilian onlookers marching out from the main building to embark on cars of the Philadelphia Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad for transport to the battlefields to the south. The flag in the upper left-hand corner proclaims "Union For Ever" indicating the main initial war aim of the North and of President Abraham Lincoln: to preserve the Union by forcibly preventing the secession of the Southern states. Below the main illustration are views of the soldiers eating in the enormous dining hall and of meals being prepared. The illustration is by lithographer William Boell also seen as William Buell. Born in France around 1832 Boell worked in New York from 1854 until about 1859. He then moved to Philadelphia where he established his own firm and was active until the 1880s. Frontispiece engraving has light damp stains on the edge. Cloth binding has dark blue and purplish stains on the covers. Edge wear to the cloth head and base of the spine and boards. Hinges cracked and appeared to have been glued. Top of the title page has a rough tear but no loss of the printed title. Pencil notes written upside down on the rear blank end sheet. Interior contents clean. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. The price for this heavy set includes worldwide free shipping per Courier ! In the early 1920s £5000 of the National War Memorial funds were spent collecting the records of all the fallen and publishing them in Irelands Memorial Records. One hundred copies of the eight-volume set were printed for distribution through the principal libraries of the country.The printing decoration and binding of the volumes was carried out by Irish artists and workers of the highest reputation and efficiency. The most remarkable feature of the volumes are the beautiful symboic borders designed by the artist Harry Clarke best-known for his work in stained glass. Contained in the eight volumes are the details of over 49000 fatal casualties. The men and women commemorated either served in Irish Regiments or were born or were resident in Ireland at the time of their death and were serving with units from Britain and its empire. The principle information given for each person whereas being similar to Soldiers Died in the Great War quite often contains additional facts such as age and elaboration on how killed etc. For example the entry died of wounds received in Sinn Fein Rebellion has been noticed. Details of pre-war medal entitlement and other odd facts occasionally occur. This is the only publication to bring so many of the Great War dead from Ireland together in order that they may be individually and collectively honoured and remembered. Here is a unique opportunity to own one of the rarest sets of memorial books ever published which have never been available for sale to private individuals.
