WWII Japanese newspaper one sheet printed double side issued by Miyako Shinbunsha on January 18th 1942. Front page features latest military news including Japanese army's advances in Johore State and capture of Malacca town to the northwest of Singapore on January 15th. These is also a report on the capture of Tarakan airfield and on bombing raids launched against Rabaul. It also shows two maps one of Borneo and one of the war zone of southern Malaya Singapore and northern Sumatra. One article highlights the fact that Australian newspapers including Sydney's Daily Mirror have been critical of the failures of British Military strategy in Southeast Asia. Another entitled "Australian Army to the Front Line" describes the deployment of Australian forces to Southeast Asia to oppose Japan's southward advance. <br> <br>There is also an article on page 2 about marriages of Japanese military settlers in Manchuria. Not all of the reports are war related - the newsheet includes reports of sumo results and advertisments for patent medicines. Colour folding game sheet 36.5 x 26cm 10 wooden playing pieces each with embossed images in beige and blue complete original box 15.5 x 7.6 x 2.3cm considerably worn and soiled and corners reinforced the game itself is in very good bright condition. This is a two-player board game where air planes and war ships fight against each other. Fascinatingly the game sheet illustration shows the battle ground is in the Pacific where islands with palm tree are dotted. Consequently the game might be produced at the early stage of the Pacific War. The players attack each other after starting from a naval base and an air base. There are two islands each where they are safely protected from their enemies. The playing pieces are made out of paper with embossed images of war ships and air planes in beige air power and blue sea power colours. . unknown

Her watercolour paintings earned a Gold Medal from the Canadian Association of Children’s Librarians and was the first major publication to examine the Japanese-Canadian experience of illegal internment by a Japanese-Canadian writer. Takashima 1928-2005 studied at the Ontario College of Art following the War later taught there from 1976 to retirement in 1994 and also spent extensive time traveling in Mexico India New York and Japan. ‘Go For Broke’ / 442nd Combat Team Song
Hattiesburg: Earl M. Finch 1944. Sheet music measuring 12 x 9 inches 4 pp. Signature of a Nabuko Hayashida on front cover. Slight tears at fold some toning two small pinholes very good overall quite attractive. Very Good. In Hawaii in May 1942 a battalion of Nisei volunteers was assembled for service in World War Two despite earlier failures of efforts to recruit Japanese-Americans due to the Army’s labeling of Nisei recruits as 4-C enemy aliens. Designated as the 100th Infantry Battalion they were deployed to North Africa in June 1943 integrating with the 34th Division in active combat. Their subsequent deployment to Italy in September 1943 exposed them to intense warfare earning them the moniker of the "Purple Heart Battalion" due to their notably high casualty rate.<br /> <br /> In January 1943 the U.S. War Department officially declared the establishment of the segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team RCT which was comprised of Nisei volunteers originating from Hawaii and the mainland. The culmination of this initiative transpired in June 1944 when the 442nd RCT merged forces with the 100th Infantry Battalion in Europe subsequently absorbing the latter into its structure. The notable achievements of Nisei soldiers in combat operations prompted the reinstatement of the draft in January 1944 specifically targeting Nisei detainees to augment the ranks of the 442nd. Over time the 442nd RCT expanded to encompass the 2nd 3rd and 100th Battalions; the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion; the 232nd Engineering Company; the 206th Army Band; Anti-Tank Company; Cannon Company; and Service Company. <br /> <br /> Offered here is a very scarce piece of sheet music entitled “Go For Broke†which was written by the Hawaiian musician Harry Hamada reflecting the slogan of the 442nd and performed by Shelby and others during the war as part of efforts to boost morale. Hamada would feature in the 1951 movie “Go For Broke†as Masami alongside several other veterans of the 442nd. This publication of “Go For Broke†is from 1944 seven years before the movie’s release. The piece is dedicated to Colonel C.W. Pence. Hamada was a Hawaiian musician who performed with a band called the Shelby Hawaiians or the Shelby Serenaders. They performed as early as 1943. The Hattiesburg Mississippi merchant Earl M. Finch who ran an Army and Navy store close to Camp Shelby befriended Hamada and other members of the 442nd and acted as a sponsor for the group and eventually published this version despite his business being a dry goods merchant house and not a publishing house. The group with the support of Finch performed throughout the country to lift morale. At some point Hamada penned this composition likely in 1944 as we find no reference to it in 1943 articles and Finch published it - Hamada’s composition would become the theme song of the 442nd and Hamada would perform at the Halloran General Hospital in New York and the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. in 1944 likely performing this composition. Another composition called “Go For Broke†exists as well and it is unclear to what degree Hamada’s work caught on among the regiment. <br /> <br /> We find two records of Finch’s published version of the composition one listed as part of an online remembrance of the 442nd by the Smithsonian Institution https://americanhistory.si.edu/explore/stories/day-remembrance-70-years-after-executive-order-9066 which appears to have been on loan from the National Japanese American Historical Society and another copy held at Stanford though not listed in OCLC. Finch’s story is also interesting and is the subject of a remembrance on a 100th Battalion History page online https://www.100thbattalion.org/history/stories/earl-finch/. We find no copies listed in OCLC. Overall a very scarce piece of Japanese-American wartime history. Earl M. Finch unknown

Cover shows a miserable prisoner flanked by ball & chains of swastika and hammer & sickle, behind whom hover Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and front and center The Pope. "Jehovah's Witnesses were subjected to intense persecution under the Nazi regime. The Nazis targeted Jehovah's Witnesses because they were unwilling to accept the authority of the state, because of their international connections, and because they were strongly opposed to both war on behalf of a temporal authority and organized government in matters of conscience. Within months of the Nazi takeover, regional governments, primarily those of Bavaria and Prussia, initiated aggressive steps against Jehovah's Witnesses, breaking up their meetings, ransacking and then occupying their local offices. By April 1, 1935, the Reich and Prussian Minister of the Interior ordered the responsible local officials to dissolve the Watchtower Society. Many actions of Jehovah's Witnesses antagonized Nazi authorities. While Witnesses contended that they were apolitical and that their actions were not anti-Nazi, their unwillingness to give the Nazi salute, to join party organizations or to let their children join the Hitler Youth, their refusal to participate in the so-called elections or plebiscites, and their unwillingness to adorn their homes with Nazi flags made them suspect. A special unit of the Gestapo compiled a registry of all persons believed to be Jehovah's Witnesses. Gestapo agents infiltrated Bible study meetings" (USHMM 2016) No copies listed in OCLC. Portfolio of Drawings and Memoir Documenting a Forty-Day Internment at Ellis Island While Fleeing Nazi Persecution in 1941
New York City 1941. Thirty-three sketches mainly measuring 6 x 8 or 8 x 10 inches affixed to black construction paper. Sketches are pen and ink or pencil some with captions. With seventeen typed pages mainly measuring 6 ½ x 7 inches. In an 11 x 14 ½ inch portfolio. Spine of portfolio missing all pages separated; sketches excellent construction paper with much marginal chipping; typed pages with adhesive verso else excellent. Overall very good to excellent. Bitia Rosendor 1920–2011 was a Jewish artist born in Jerusalem and raised in Antwerp Belgium. Rosendor studied painting and sculpture at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp but her studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. The Rosendor family fled Europe via Portugal in 1941 and were detained at Ellis Island where these sketches were produced.<br /> <br /> The sketches include portraits of other detainees and immigration employees and views from the island. Most have captions including brief notes about the subjects such as “She became hysterical and was taken to the hospital†“A little orphan going all alone to the Dominican Republic†and “‘Liberty’ through barsâ€â€”the latter on an illustration of the Statue of Liberty seen through the bars on the internment center’s windows.<br /> <br /> The typed text describes Rosendor’s experience waiting for the family’s Visa to be approved. The ordeal is mostly one of boredom; she writes:<br /> <br /> “Everyone had the same endless day to pass but everyone passed it differently. There was no possible way to be original but each of us retained her or his personality. The emptiness of the hours was heavy to bear.â€<br /> <br /> The boredom though is punctuated by “incidentsâ€; some negative as when “Once a Chinese girl wept for three days uninterrupted refused to eat refused everything†and some positive as when “A friend seen last time at the Antipodes†disembarks “from a newly entered ship . and suddenly: ‘YOU’! -’YOU’â€.<br /> <br /> Rosendor would live with her family in Brooklyn until the 1950s when she returned to Europe with her husband Jewish-American painter Martin Reisberg a fellow immigrant whom she met in the city. The pair returned to Belgium where they ran a gallery and created exhibitions together until Rosendor’s death in 2011.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the Holocaust American immigration and the Jewish immigrant experience in the 1940s. unknown

Text ends on page 34 with no back cover. Contents lightly toned and clean. <br /> <br /> Issued in 1844 this copy has 21 folding plans and maps of which 16 are numbered. It does not have all the 27 folding plates and maps compared to the 1845 copy currently held by the Cincinnati Public Library their copy states "Part 2". Does not appear maps or plans were removed at the back. Possible that this copy is incomplete but difficult to verify if the 34 page text came with 21 drawings or 27 drawings initially. n.p. unknown

This pamphlet commemorates the bi-centennial of the Indian attack on Medfield in February 1675. It was believed that a group of Nipmucks and Wampanoags who were allied with King Philip terrorized the residents and burned a good portion of the town. The pamphlet records the activities of the celebration including some historical information prayers and poems. 5th Regimental Combat Team Korea photograph album
1950. Approximately 250 vernacular snap shots of American military life in Korea mostly infantry divisions during the Cold War period in which the Soviet trained North Korean army invaded South Korea. <br /> <br /> There are many snap shot portraits of individual soldiers including one of Korean troops a few with a caption on verso as well as daily life on the base military material tanks airplanes artillery practice and local landscapes and towns. <br /> <br /> Specific sites pictured include the Camp Walker post exchange Second Infantry Division NCO Academy and a sign post in town showing the way to the Taegu Military post. The album closes with shots of the troops on their way home from Korea stopping in Japan.<br /> With a newspaper article tipped in at rear "5th Regimental Combat Team Taegu Korea" on the departure of the 5th RCT from Pusan to the US.<br /> <br /> The 5th RCT deployed to Korea on 25 July 1950 to reinforce the Eighth Army in the shrinking area of United Nations control called the Pusan Perimeter. It reinforced the 25th Infantry Division then the 1st Cavalry Division on the Naktong River line. Later it was attached to the 24th Infantry Division replacing the 34th Infantry Regiment. It remained with the 24th Infantry Division until January 1952 when it officially became a separate RCT once more.<br /> <br /> The 5th RCT notably fought in the Battle of Pusan Perimeter one of the first major battles in the Korean War between United Nations and North Korean forces which brought the southern advance of North Korean troops to a halt. The 5th RCT had 269 killed 574 wounded and four captured during the battle<br /> <br /> Most snap shots measure 4 1/4 x 3 1/4"; some slightly smaller . Darling I Will Dream. and Truth Will Out!
North Korea or China.: Korean People's Army or People's Volunteer Army. Circa1951-1953. Two double-sided leaflets. Darling I Will Dream: 21 x 15cm. Truth Will Out: 19 x 13cm. Both leaflets somewhat foxed and trifle soiled chipped with a little loss though still in good condition for what were most likely once-active leaflets in a warzone. Two propaganda leaflets intended to be dropped over UN Forces in Korea attempting to convince them to surrender and cooperate with the KPA and PVA. Each leaflet appeals to different modes of persuasion with one relying on an emotional appeal and the other from the perspective of logic. <br> <br>'Darling I Will Dream That You Are Coming Back to Me This Christmas' is a typical example in the long-winded history of so-called 'counterfeit Christmas cards' that purport to show wistful appeals from sweethearts abandoned back home. The addition of the details of a supposedly deceased GI are intended to add credence to the letter's authenticity though a quick search reveals the soldier in question returned home after his successful tour of duty in Korea married his sweetheart and led out the rest of his life very well. <br> <br>'Truth Will Out' is a very early example of the conflicting narratives that permeate the North Korean historiography of the Armistice Agreement - most retellings largely hinging on the portrayal of the American leadership as a gaggle of mercurial incompetents. <br> <br>This particular account details a ceasefire negotiation in which General William K. Harrison abruptly walked out before waiting to hear General Nam Il's "very reasonable proposal". The ultimate purpose of this tale is to encourage UN Forces to passively revolt in protest. While the event did indeed take place in June 1952 in reality Harrison was not empowered to hear counter-proposals and called a recess before Nam Il had the opportunity to launch into what would have undoubtedly been an over-rehearsed propagandistic diatribe. D. Bruce Lockerbie the author of Harrison's biography theorised that the ultimate goal of the American delegation's walk-out was to not only deny the North Koreans a platform but also shock them which it evidently did. . Korean War Propaganda Leaflet. "Christmas will be happy in the family".
Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified. <br> <br>The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown

Simulated wood grain boards souvenir scrapbook from the Oregon Journal comb-bound as issued some minor soiling edgewear occasional offsetting to some of the tipped-in pieces from glue still a VG exemplar. This photo album/scrapbook documents the career of Chief William Bennett 1906-1986 a welding specialist with Willamette Iron & Steel who had been recalled in 1951 during the Korean War to serve with the Seabees on Guam. He had supervised the welding crews on the giant USS Artisan ABSD-1 -- later redesignated as the AFDB-1 the world’s largest auxiliary floating drydock. Bennett served on her when she was towed in sections to Guam from Pearl Harbor through 1951 and reconstituted to serve as a mobile ship repair and shipbuilding drydock facility. When Chief Bennett was assigned to the 103rd Seabees they were the longest continually operating Naval Construction Battalion building from World War II up to the Korean War Quonset huts for Naval Personnel and offices a movie theatre the old mess hall built weather stations housing for Guam locals generating plants and more. The photographs include an image of the sidewall of the USS Artisan Chief Bennett’s offices aerial photos of airfields and other projects under construction by the Seabees and more. The Beehive’s first issue is launched 6 June 1952 with a blank banner heading and contest for suggested names of the newspaper followed by several articles about Seabee construction by the 103rd NCB. The issues feature local news Mobile Construction Battalion history commentaries photos illustrations blueprints and diagrams showing construction projects progress sports news and comic strips by R.E. Hakanson Hudson and others. Bennett would return to live in Portland and work for Willamette Iron & Steel in the shipbuilding yards in 1953 and later was self-employed selling decorative agate tables and clocks with his wife Ramona Angus Bennett 1924-2017. This well-documented photo album and scrapbook log the career of U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Ellis from 1947 through 1953 chronicling his time as a Reserve while a student at Lewis & Clark College in Portland and then Washington State University in Pullman who becomes Staff Sergeant while serving on the USS Philippine Sea is involved in operations in Korea visits Japan and finally is stationed at Cherry Point North Carolina.
Portland OR: Eugene R. Ellis 1947-1953. Oblong folio. 14.5 x 11 in. 84 pp unpaginated. With 381 tipped-in original photos most snapshots but many Navy and Studio photographs as well 9 in colour ranging in size from 2 x 2 in to 10 x 12.5 in. currency Reserve cards Marine Corps certificates & official orders clippings notes business cards beer bottle labels and more all tipped-in most with descriptive captions in white lettering below the images and as headings on the pages. Beige-coloured padded cloth post-binder brass post screws occasional rubbing some creasing to occasional photos some removed minor wear & rubbing still a VG- exemplar. This photo album supplies an excellent visual and historical record for the career of a young Marine Corps Sergeant during the Korean War era. The images encompass his time at Camp Pendleton on leave at Knotts Berry Farm in 1950 training at Parris Island SC on liberty in New Orleans in 1951 with numerous shots of the camp the city of New Orleans beach antics while on liberty and then sea duty on USS Philippine Sea from 1951 through 1952. The USS Philippine Sea was an Essex Class Carrier who flew squadrons of SB2C-5 Helldivers P9F Panther jet fighters and AD-4 Skyraiders. The photos contained in the album include pictures of the Carrier the Panther jet aircraft many of the squadrons preparing for flight operations while she was providing support operations attacking Sui-ho Dam and sending aircraft against targets in Pyongyang. The snapshot images include pictures of her time while stopping over in Pearl Harbor before her second tour in Korea her stopover in Yokosuka Japan with many images of Japanese people and life in the cities and countryside along with Marines standing in Review and more. A shot of the the USS Philippine Sea fighting through heavy snow and icy weather in Jan 1952 is particularly nice. He was then promoted and assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 at Cherry Point NC which provided helicopter support of the Fleet Marine Force Units on the East Coast during the War. There are many images of the choppers personnel his family life while stationed there leave activities and more. Ellis 1929-1984 married Virginia Brittan in 1948 attended Lewis & Clark College and then WSU in Pullman before being activated for duty during Korea. Eugene R. Ellis, hardcover
