V E R Y R A R E ! . . SUPERB PHOTO ALBUM OF THE CHINESE CIVIL WAR: . . Beginning of The Communist Party led led by Mao Tse-tung . . V.S. the Kuomintang KMT or Chinese Nationalist Party . Led by Chiang Kai Shek. . The United States Supported the KMT. In this album we see how the KMT soldiers hosted the American Army in China using their trains and military bases throughout China. This unusual album contains 400 original b. w. photographs & and is an historic photographic record of American military deployment showing Dough-boys in China probably from the U.S. Army's 2nd. Battalion 15th. infantry per the flag and insignia found on a group formation photograph. A minority are with written captions by and large taken by the person who made the album also enhanced with a small percent of professional Chinese photos some of which have in-negative captions. There are ca. 3 or so photos missing else completely filling 32 pages or 64 sides one on the inside back cover. The inside of the front cover has five attractive period color luggage type adverts from various hotels: Hotel Lankershim & Coast Line Military & Naval Hotel San Francisco Cal; The Court Hotel Tientsin North China; Grand Hotel des Wagons Litz; Astor House Hotel Ltd. Tientsin. The album begins with photos of a Chinese playing a Pi-pa snake skin banjo then there are three other photos: first two show a Chinese military camouflage train engine from which a Yank soldier in his campaign hat descends and a long train of cars with a large howitzer mounted upon one last shows French troops at parade rest with their rifles and white gloves and crested helmets with anchors naval or marines with others in the background with some officers. The next two pages show Chinese coolies swing a basket from the creek top water a field a mother suckling her baby with her family at the farm a large water tower in the wet slums and a group of Doughboys at attention in formation they wear boots leggings chrome World War I type dress helmets a rifle back pack with bayonet cartridge pouch belts with green wool hip-length jackets. The opposite page shows another view of the Chinese military train a pair of large mounted guns on an armored train car. To the right is a Chinese officer pointing to a large pierced hole in the train with a foreign engineer peering out from the small window. The train sports the Republic of China flag with a Chinese military unit flag painted on the side. Another view shows a group of abandoned Chinese coffins that went to the dogs; a group of soldiers in garrison caps at attention with fixed bayonets as the officers salute someone near the person taking the photo some Chinese officers also present. Next 2 pages show Chinese on a wheel barrow some Japanese women by a pond in Kimono and a group of British troops from their colonial Empire: blacks Indians white trumpeter Chinese and others with musical instruments all wear white cork-type pith helmets. Photos of the great wall magnificent Chinese architectural monuments buildings and pagodas religious icons coffins more coffins mortars & Chinese junks and a plethora of others. The American Consulate General's compound in Tientsin American military band welcoming the newly arrived replacement troops. A large photo group shot of the American officers seated for a memorial photograph with their Battalion flag proudly posted on the wall where they pose source of our citation at the top of the unit name; two buglers are at each outside position the commander is ram-rod straight and taller than all others seated in the front & center; he and only two others on his sides wear full leather knee boots probably indicating the highest ranking officers; others are in boots & leggings. Photos of Doughboys aboard a ship showing the Naval officers with one stunning photo of an American high officer with his Japanese & Chinese counter parts posing for the camera. And a photo of the "Mail Boat Gazun Panama" and a few others of Panama giving credence to the fact that some of these soldiers came from the American East coast via Panama to San Francisco then on to China. And a nice photo of the "U.S. Army Transport Thomas" Chinese junk &c. A U.S. soldier in a necktie his rifle at fixed bayonet at parade-rest before the Consulate General compound with sand bags inside a photo of a U.S. soldier with his Colt-45 on his hip with canteen looking at some communications connections another photo of two mini U.S. tanks and a very long bridge over the water. Photo of the Tientsin downtown with a Sikh Indian policeman directing traffic. Next page shows a public Chinese street execution: the guilty on his knees with the executioner ready to swing a very large sword and another headless corpse is before him the Tientsin YMCA compound opposite which is likely the inside of the American Consulate offices showing very ancient typewriters and three women staff and one other female Navy person. They all mug for the camera with a good number of U.S. Army or Marine officers behind three desks. Chinese hauling "magnum gold" brand ammunition on hand- trucks a U.S. Army band performing before the Consulate's office. At this point we find a few photos with penned captions: "One of China's Department Stores it shows a bird vendor; Peanut Gambler a mountain of P-nuts; Chinese Shimboo photo of the office and maker of the album and his Chinese officer friend ; "A Chinese Taxi" shows him in a Rickshaw "Me and the boy friend 11/3/28" shows a tiny goat cart carrying a child's coffin with a Chinese man. This penned date gives substantial proof of the date range of the entire album which was placed about the center of the whole work. The next page shows two more penned captions: "Chinese cavalry" and "Note mud house and fence" shows two Chinese officers on horse-back and a very very poor house with very starved animals. The next shows six Chinese undercover men two each holding a Chinese being readied for execution; and a very grizzly photo of a Chinese officer actually executing a Chinese man with his pistol who is seated on a rock: the photo captures the action as the shot blows away the mans brains. Behind the execution scene is a crowd of American soldiers in campaign hats and Chinese military officers who are witness to the event. More views of Chinese street life vendors pullers haulers & horse carts religious icons and a stunning Chinese roofed gate more Chinese troops on the move via train with a very horrible view of a large number of dead Chinese in the muddy filthy waters by a bridge. Homeless Chinese at a "soup kitchen" war refugees hauling their belongings house boat street barbers a group of 7 photos by the ocean. They show American soldiers at leisure looking at Chinese fishermen nets naked fishermen hauling in a net of fish to the beach a burning waterfront village the jetty where several large American transport ships are at anchor and a great assembly of Yankee soldiers on the beach with duffel bags and their gear at the railhead. The last photo shows a great number of various whisky bottles lined up for display. More photos show a coffin maker large coffin basket seller and "chow" sellers on the street. A military formation of 100's of either Scottish or Irish soldiers with fixed bayonets marching down the main street before the "RNC Electricity Dept." below which is a very long line of British soldiers on one side of the street opposite from a good number of American soldiers who are on the side of the street a British Union Jack flies over a castle-like structure this is clearly some kind of grand military parade. More photos of the Great Wall the military parade and army chaplains with an Australia flag flying over another castle tower. Chinese river scene with large numbers of native boats in a canal a beggar's camp with straw -mat tents a canal crossing ferry for people a photo of a U.S. officer stand on top a wooden coffin for a closer look. The album now shifts to photos of the Peking area. Shows the Ming tombs and the camel-lined road; military train the Americans were transported by that train a large bivouac and tent city where the U. S. military troops camped some Chinese "house boys" proudly holding the American troop's unit flag. More photos of two U.S. soldiers posing near Chinese coffins in a wet ditch. A group of very young Chinese boys posed near the railroad; one is so poor that he has no clothes at all and is in nude. The feuding war lords and political parties at war; the landing of American military to protect American diplomatic interests. Support & assistance given to the Americans and other foreign military groups by the Nationalist Chinese army. The desperate situation of the tragic Chinese people caught in the grips of upheaval and the summary punishment of traitors in a public display of the swift and ruthless law of China. A riveting and most compelling true record of a U.S. military officer's sojourn to and deployment in China. THE PHOTOGRAPHER AND THE SIZE OF PHOTOGRAPHS: This is not a professional group of photographs but there a very small amount which were obviously purchased by the maker of the album and inserted. The vast majority are his personal photographs these again are obvious to anyone who looks at the album. This is an excellent example of private work of an unknown American Army officer stationed in China during a very chaotic period. He was interested in recording for posterity his experiences and the sights that he saw while on duty. We thank him for giving us privy to this slice of American and Chinese military history. SIZE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: The size varies considerably sizes in cm.: the smallest are 8 x 5 most are 14 x 9 3 larger photos 24.5 x 18 and the last 30 x 10. CONDITION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: These are original period photos they are all very clear sharp images no fading and in excellent condition. They have been corner mounted. RARITY: Photographic albums of this period in China are NOT commonly found; one made by an American Army officer stationed in China at this time is exceptionally unusual and RARE ! This is a charming primary source with a large number of clean & sharp images taken by an actual participant in this historic period of China. The officer and photographer of these photographs shared for posterity his keen insight and view of these events. THE PHOTOGRAPHER AND THE SIZE OF PHOTOGRAPHS: This is not a professional group of photographs but there a very small amount which were obviously purchased by the maker of the album and inserted. The vast majority are his personal photographs these again are obvious to anyone who looks at the album. This is an excellent example of private work of an unknown American Army officer stationed in China during a very chaotic period. He was interested in recording for posterity his experiences and the sights that he saw while on duty. We thank him for giving us privy to this slice of American and Chinese military history. SIZE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: The size varies considerably sizes in cm.: the smallest are 8 x 5 most are 14 x 9 3 larger photos 24.5 x 18 and the last 30 x 10. CONDITION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS: These are original period photos they are all very clear sharp images no fading and in excellent condition. They have been corner mounted. RARITY: Photographic albums of this period in China are NOT commonly found; one made by an American Army officer stationed in China at this time is exceptionally unusual and RARE ! This is a charming primary source with a large number of clean & sharp images taken by an actual participant in this historic period of China. The officer and photographer of these photographs shared for posterity his keen insight and view of these events. Cardboard portfolio with ties and tipped-on facsimile of woman's head. 50 leaves inside contents 46 of 47 called for images 1 duplicate image one uncalled-for image and reproduction of written text by Pennell. "This unique collection of drawings was contributed to the "American Artist's War Emergency Fund" by forty-seven American artists to be disposed of for the benefit of this fund." Second leaf is a lithograph of a handwritten brief essay on lithography by Joseph Pennell. 37th drawing in the portfolio is also by Pennell. This copy has two copies of a contribution by Henry Walker and lacks the contribution listed for Ben Foster. There is however an unlisted contribution by G.H. Westhampton likely Massachusetts 1861-1864. Ephemera. Fine. Group of 13 manuscript letters black ink in tidy cursive addressed to "Hattie" who is perhaps in Springfield. Most are signed "Mother" one the last and only letter in pencil is signed "Sister Anna" and all are dated 22 April 1861 - "Sabbath Eve" May 1864 and located in Westhampton. A few are somewhat faint but still legible -- otherwise condition is fine. <br/><br/>An interesting group of letters quintessential for their reports on the health of seemingly everyone in town and for their concern with the American Civil War. "I am taking a great interest in war matters feel curious to read the daily paper think the North will come off conquered and I hope without shedding Oceans of blood" she remarks in the earliest letter in the group. Some remarks from later letters include: "We heard that Bolton and Alvin Clark were sick at Annapolis and that Henry Smith is a prisoner at Richmond. Mother England blusters about terribly doesn't she Hope she isn't going to declare war against us."; "Our people have had no letters since the battle are expecting some daily. Edward Coyt of Huntington was one of the wounded. After the battle of Roanoke he wrote to his folks he'd seen enough of war."; "Our men A. P. Bridgman Davis Burt Bartholt Bissell Edward Delany Charles Land Henry Sulliver a fellow living at Capt Custs and an Irishman. The Federation cooperated with the Association of Jewish Refugees and Immigrants from Poland in publishing The Black Book of Polish Jewry in 1943. In the mid-1940s, they also coordinated relief activities of New York Polish landsmanshaftn on behalf of their home towns and landslayt, going on, in the 1950s, to campaign actively against antisemitism and racial discrimination. The proceedings of a series of secret meetings from 15 December 1814 to 5 January 1815 in Hartford Connecticut of Federalist delegates from Connecticut Rhode Island Massachusetts New Hampshire and Vermont "who were dissatisfied with Pres. James Madison's mercantile policies and the progress of the War of 1812 'Mr. Madison's War' as well as long resentful over the balance of political power that gave the South particularly Virginia effective control of the national government. The more extreme delegates raised the possibility of secession but others sought only to dictate amendments to the Constitution that would protect their interests. Ultimately the convention adopted a strong states' rights position and expressed its grievances in a series of resolutions against military conscription and commercial regulations along with some stringent criticisms of Madison's administration that were agreed to on January 4 1815. Even as the convention finished its business however a British sloop of war was beating its way across the Atlantic with dispatches containing the peace terms that had been agreed to in the Treaty of Ghent ending the war. Moreover as the convention's emissaries approached Washington D. C. they were met by the news of Gen. Andrew Jackson's unexpected victory in the Battle of New Orleans. By the time the emissaries arrived it was no longer possible to serve the kind of ultimatum contained in the convention's report. The war along with the national crisis it had brought about had ended. The secrecy of the Hartford proceedings also contributed to discrediting the convention and its unpopularity was a factor in the demise of the Federalist Party." - Encyclopedia Britannica. The American Jewish Conference [was a] representative American organization established in 1943 at the initiative of B'nai B'rith to deal with the problems of Palestine and the European Holocaust. Originally composed of representatives of all major Jewish groups and delegates from local Jewish communities, the Conference was given direction from Zionist bodies which sought a pro-Zionist declaration by a body representing American Jewry as a whole. Such a declaration was overwhelmingly adopted at its New York assembly in August 1943. As a result, the American Jewish Committee seceded from the Conference. Nevertheless, the organization submitted a series of pro-Zionist statements to official national and international bodies and waged a public relations campaign until its dissolution in 1949. Original paper wrappers. 4to. 16 pages. 28 cm. A Bicentennial publication on the life, times and personal papers of the celebrated American Jewish patriot whose efforts helped finance Washingtons army and secure American Independence. Staple bound in fine paper wraps with raised signature title, fine tissue endpapers, background illustrations throughout, all text in red and brown ink, thirty four illustrations, and biographical chronology at end. Text details the life of Haym Salomon (Solomon) (17401785) , early American merchant and Revolutionary War patriot. Salomon, who was born in Lissa, Poland, arrived in New York about 1775 after wandering in Europe and became one of the most prominent 18th-century American Jews. During the Revolutionary War he was a distiller and sutler to the American army, and was captured as a spy by the British. His life was spared, and he served as an interpreter in their commissary department. Continuing to give information to the Americans, he assisted their prisoners to escape British captivity while operating a profitable victualing business in New York City under British occupation. Married to Rachel Franks in 1777, he had to flee a year later to Philadelphia, where he began a brokerage and commission business. In 1781 he became an assistant to Robert Morris, superintendent of the Office of Finance, after serving in a similar capacity as broker and treasurer for the huge expenses of the French army stationed in America. Morris characterized him as useful to the public interest. Salomon also lent money without charge to impecunious members of the Continental Congress, among them James Madison, who recommended him as our little friend in Front Street. In 1784 Salomon expanded his business activities to New York, opening a brokerage and auctioneering house there with Jacob Mordecai. A mason, Salomon was a major contributor in 1782 to the Congregation Mikveh Israel building, Philadelphia. He argued against a New Testament oath taken by officeholders in Pennsylvania and worked for political rights of Jews. Though a successful merchant, Salomon invested most of his money in Continental stocks and bonds, and his accounts showed a deficit at the time of his death. The newspaper obituary referred to him as an eminent broker of this city
remarkable for his skill and integrity in his profession, and for his generous and human deportment. He left four children and a widow, who later married David Hilborn. By 1799 she was living in the Batavian Republic.
Exaggerated claims were made for Salomon's services to the American Revolution, largely as a point of Jewish apologetics. Without question, however, he was a vigorous patriot at great personal risk, and a competent financial servant of American independence and of some of its leaders. Munitions plants employ women at dangerous tasks with long hours and low wages. Discriminatory laws against women should be defeated and women's wages made equal with men's for equal work. Published in 1935 this pamphlet was issued by the American League Against War and Fascism a Popular Front organization formed in 1933 at the height of the Depression and global political instability. The League whose membership included communists socialists liberals labor leaders and clergy sought to organize broad resistance to the rise of fascism in Europe and to U.S. military expansion. In the preface to its founding conference at Madison Square Garden the League declared: "We call upon all who would defend peace democracy and the rights of the working people to unite in struggle against the forces of war and fascism." This 1935 publication situates the group within the international anti-fascist movement linking Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia Hitler's consolidation of power in Germany and Japan's militarism in Asia to domestic threats posed by American reactionary forces.<br /> <br /> Pamphlets of the American League Against War and Fascism are historically significant both for their content and for their role in shaping early U.S. anti-fascist discourse. They illustrate how broad coalitions attempted to mobilize ordinary Americans against authoritarianism years before the United States entered World War II. Such ephemera are now scarce with surviving examples primarily held in institutional collections documenting the American Left peace activism and interwar political culture. For historians it offers a primary source on the rhetoric of Popular Front organizing and the early intersections of anti-war and anti-fascist politics in the United States. Detailed report on the re-establishment of vocational training courses in ORT facilities in Warsaw, discontinued during the siege of Warsaw (as the Ort Building on Dluga street was destroyed) , with no classes functioning during the 1939-40 school year, but renewed, with saved equipment and machinery moved to ORT Quarters at Zabia and Stawski. The renewed courses, until May 1941, consisted of 2, 500 pupils; the enlargement of courses offered, the programs, results, conditions for development, plans for new courses, statistics of the artisan courses, office work courses, agricultural courses, and housekeeping courses are given in detail. New York: Printed by James Rivington 1778. Britain seeks peace with revolutionary America First editions of these six tracts recording efforts at British-American reconciliation during the Revolutionary War. This copy has an excellent provenance: although not marked as such it comes from the family collection of William Eden 1744-1814 a key figure in the negotiations and the author of the latter two works. In 1778 Lord North appointed Eden a member of the Board of Trade and Frederick Howard 5th Earl of Carlisle 1748-1825 to a commission charged with reconciling Britain and America after the British defeat at Saratoga. Although the commissioners were authorized to grant every American demand short of independence the mission was not a success. Mostly this was because the Americans had already formed an alliance with France but Carlisle did not help matters by issuing a manifesto which criticized the French and insisted that Britain would fight to the bitter end. This attracted the attention of the Marquis de Lafayette who challenged Carlisle to a duel which was rejected on diplomatic grounds. The Collection of Papers published in New York by the king's printer includes Carlisle's manifesto along with various other letters and proclamations exchanged between the commissioners and Congress. The second third and fourth tracts comprise Congress's four-page response to the Carlisle manifesto a petition and an address to the commissioners from the loyalist merchants of New York City. These papers are often found with the Collection but are not always present and are listed as separate works in ESTC. In Eden's two tracts he defends his record with the commission and demonstrates his continued engagement with British and Irish politics. He had begun to push for Carlisle's promotion and in 1779 he secured for him the presidency of the Board of Trade. In 1780 Carlisle became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland taking Eden with him as his chief secretary. The other tracts comprise: b SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS. Manuscript subsistence receipt signed.
Rhode Island: 24 March 1778. Sustaining Burgoyne's Wandering Army Revealing a crucial moment in the aftermath of Saratoga this 1778 receipt documents the transfer of £56000 from New York to support General Burgoyne's imprisoned Convention Army in Boston. The receipt was signed at a delicate point for the British Army. In the summer of 1777 General William Howe succeeded in taking Philadelphia but in October a separate force under John Burgoyne was forced to surrender to Horatio Gates following the two battles of Saratoga in the autumn of 1777. Subsequently the Convention Army named for the treaty of surrender was marched to Boston where they were held prisoner. Burgoyne was permitted to leave for England in April 1778 but his army remained in captivity until the end of the war. This immense sum of £56000 perhaps equivalent to £9500000 today was sent to Burgoyne to feed his starving army. The Battles of Saratoga represented the turning point of the Revolutionary War winning the assistance from France "which was the last element needed for victory" Morgan pp. 82-3. The receipt was signed by Richard Molesworth 1737-1799 a longstanding deputy paymaster in the War Office. Molesworth is briefly mentioned in a letter to Howe on 10 April 1778 where the need for money to support General Burgoyne and his army in Boston is discussed. Richard was the brother of the Robert 5th Viscount Molesworth who inherited the title from his cousin Richard Nassau Molesworth 4th Viscount Molesworth who died without heirs. This document was previously folded and kept in an envelope mounted on the front pastedown of a book from the Molesworth family library a first edition of the English translation of Souligné's The Desolation of France Demonstrated. It was gifted by Souligné to Robert Molesworth 1st viscount Molesworth 1656-1725. Molesworth has inscribed the front blank: "Donum Authoris" Gift from the Author and his note on the title-page reads: "Mons. De Souligny sic Grandson to the famous Du Plessis Mornay". The 1st Viscount Molesworth was an experienced political figure and a prominent member of the Privy Council of Ireland who later held a seat for Dublin County in the Irish House of Commons. The book has a later ownership inscription of Samuel Crompton 1753-1827 on the preliminary blank. Crompton was a pioneer of the spinning industry and was married to Harriet Molesworth the daughter of John Edward Nassau Molesworth. John was the great-grandson of Robert Molesworth 1st Viscount Molesworth. A 20th-century bookplate of another viscount Molesworth is pasted over the white envelope which held the subsistence receipt on the front pastedown. Also present is a manuscript bankers' draft dated 1796 signed by the 5th Viscount Molesworth requesting a payment to his son-in-law John Forster Hill. Single leaf 147 x 187 mm hand-written on both sides in black ink; the book: octavo 186 x 117 mm; also with manuscript bankers' draft dated 1796 and signed by Robert 5th Viscount Molesworth. The book: contemporary black crushed morocco raised bands spine gilt in compartments covers ornamentally gilt marbled endpapers. Ink annotations possibly in Crompton's hand. The engraved title contains a précis of the War surmounted by five inset views of military and naval engagements while the final plate decorated with four similar insets gives a précis of the Treaty of Versailles in 1783 and a list of the principal officers killed or wounded in the war. Howes describes this as the first French book with a title-page mentioning the United States.
