ANGLE Paul M.
A Pictorial History of the Civil War Years
Garden City: Doubleday & Company 1967. Hardcover. Small 4to. Pictorial paper over boards. 242pp. Extensive illustrations map endpapers. Very good. Binding rather edgeworn and a bit rubbed. Ownership signature on front pastedown of Ralph Gordon noted medical book and military history collector. Tight and decent later printing of this well-illustrated overview by the well-known Illinois and Civil War historian 1901-75 with a fine autograph addition: Tipped to the inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Angle 1p 8½" X 11" Springfield IL 1945 April 19. Addressed to Ralph G Newman founder of Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Very good. On "Illinois State Historical Library" letterhead which cites him as state historian Angle thanks the bookseller cryptically for some list noting: "In this instance Sickles really must have made a killing. If you ever find out who the original purchaser was I'd like to know." Signed simply "Paul" in blue ink. Sickles would be a reference to infamous Abraham Lincoln forger Harry Dayton Sickles who along with Eugene "Pinny" Field II was blanketing the country with forged autograph items of Lincoln and other historical figures. ANGLO-ZULU WAR - ELLIOT, Fitzwilliam.
Important collection of letters and documents concerning his service in the Anglo-Zulu war.
Onboard ship and in southern Africa: 1879. I should not like to say how many kraals we burnt … Such warfare is not very glorious Brimming with colour and detail this archive of largely unpublished in-the-field correspondence of some 21000 words is a fine primary source for the conflict only partially examined by historians. Elliot a well-placed perspicacious army captain on secondment as a special service officer expresses his admiration for the Zulu and proffers unguarded opinions on his superiors and the conduct of the war. The youngest son of the third Earl of Minto the Honourable Fitzwilliam Elliot 1849-1928 joined the 93rd Highlanders as an ensign in 1867 and was promoted lieutenant in 1871 captain in 1878 and major in 1883. He retired with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. From 1878 to May 1879 he was posted to Canada as ADC to Lieutenant-General Sir Patrick MacDougall. Following the Zulu War when he was mentioned in despatches he served in Canada in the same capacity 1881-84. MacDougall was a thinking officer who wrote and kept a sharp eye on modern tactical developments. This clearly rubbed off on his ADC if his criticism of his superiors - Wolseley excepted - is anything to go by. Elliot published a few pieces on the Border ballads and in 1911 The Battle of Flodden and the Raids of 1513 an important study described as "well-informed and carefully reasoned" Scottish Historical Review. The letters are all addressed to his mother "dear Mamma". Nina third Countess of Minto 1824-1892 was the daughter of General Sir Thomas Hislop and she is described by John Buchan as having "the spirit of a soldier". She emerges as an attractive personality whom Buchan brings to life: her "reading at the age of twenty-three might shame many professed scholars; but she had nothing of the bluestocking in her and her learning was a small thing compared to her wit her sense of fun her startling acumen and her broad tolerant wisdom". She clearly took a keen interest in her youngest son's service in South Africa as before departing Elliot had equipped her with a map and he makes several references to her being able or not to follow the course of campaigning. Elliot sailed for South Africa following the disaster at Isandlwana the famous defence of Rorke's Drift and the protracted siege at Eshowe. The second invasion of Zululand was conducted principally by Evelyn Wood's flying column and Lord Chelmsford's Second Division Elliot being attached to General Henry Hope Crealock's coastal column utilised as a blocking force away from the main action. On his way out one of the most dramatic incidents of the war occurred the death of the Prince Imperial Louis-Napoléon ambushed by Zulu warriors on 1 June while reconnoitring which Elliot describes as "a most unfortunate business & … a very shameful one". He is appalled by its "very sensational" coverage by the Cape Argus whose editor was the radical liberal Irishman Patrick McLoughlin "an unscrupulous scoundrel". He regrets that this account is the one that will circulate first in Europe where the effect will be "as bad as bad can be". Throughout the letters he is severely critical of Crealock "an old woman" and Chelmsford "the meagreness of his reports the general feebleness & despondency of their tone seem to instil a great want of confidence in all here". The letters of 12 June to 13 July describe his progress initially by boat from Cape Town to Durban in dreadful weather "altogether it has been beastly … we are rolling gunwale under & shipping heavy seas" and then north overland to Fort Chelmsford and Port Durnford. After arrival at Durban he receives orders to "go to Crealock's column on the Tugela" but "everything here is in a frightful state of confusion … all agree that we have done shamefully in this war". By 19 June he is at Fort Chelmsford above the Nyezane river some 130 kilometres north of Durban but progress is desperately slow another leitmotif of these letters. He notes that his kit is pared down to bare essentials "mackintosh sheet a great coat sponge hair brush" and that he is serving with the cavalry column led by Major Percy Barrow 19th Hussars consisting of "mounted infantry Natal Cavalry Scouts & Lonsdale's Horse - It's the very thing I should have chosen". He also describes the local contingent supplied by the colourful John Robert Dunn a Scottish emigrant described by ODNB as "chief in the Zulu kingdom": "most extraordinary fellows; they are dressed in red that is they wear red jackets but no other clothes whatever; they are excellent scouts & exceedingly brave when at a distance from the enemy singing the most extraordinary war songs some of which resemble a pack of hounds in full cry". Of Dunn himself FE writes: "I like him very much; he comes to our tent every evening & we frequently eat our meals together. He is a wonderfully well educated man & refined very superior to what I had expected. I must ask him & his wives to Minto" - Dunn reputedly had 48 Zulu wives. Elliot's unit conduct a number of kraal raids - a signal feature of the war - about which he is shamefaced: "Such warfare is not very glorious but you people at home must remember that the only way of inflicting any punishment on the Zulus is by burning their kraals & capturing their goods … Nevertheless though I know we must act as we are doing I do all the same feel rather a scoundrel when after burning many a home we return to camp with fowls eggs potatoes etc hung over our saddles & driving cattle & women before us". Then in his letter of 13 July he expresses his admiration for his opponents: "I have taken rather a fancy to the Zulus they are always so thoroughly manly; they never look cowed but hold themselves always like men never appearing angry nor even humiliated at the loss of homes cattle women every thing indeed which they possess". On 19 July he describes the medal ceremony for those involved in the famous defence of Rorke's Drift: at St Paul's fort "Sir Garnet had a parade of all the troops & gave Chard Lieutenant John Chard the VC - He is a rum 'un to look at & most unprepossessing. - It is generally considered the VC is a most unsuitable award & it would have been better to have given something else. Chard was the senior officer at Rorke's Drift & got the chief kudos whereas Bromhead Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead was in point of fact in charge of the fighting element. The man to whom the chief credit for the defence of the post is given is a commissariat officer but as he is a non-combatant it is probable his doings will never be known beyond the troops here". The officer in question James Langley Dalton was not originally among the VC recipients. FE is also less than complimentary about Colonel Charles Knight Pearson whose force endured the 70-day siege at Eshowe January-April 1879: "Pearson has returned to England where probably he will be made much of generally to the amusement of all here. He is quite universally considered to be one of the greatest muffs this war has produced". On his return to England Pearson was indeed lionised being awarded both the CB and KCMG. On 5 August he tells his mother "This letter will be interesting to you being all detail. I write it now as I am approaching the end of this writing book which I want to complete as a journal". He then gives a detailed breakdown of the forces with Crealock's column listing commanders and their regiments in some cases giving an unvarnished view of their quality: "57th Regt: best regiment in Division. Old soldiers. 60th Rifles: young soldiers young officers. Unsteady - suffered greatly from fever. 91st Highlanders: young soldiers but better class than 60th with more stamina. Fairly good regt." The 88th later the Connaught Rangers are "a real rowdy lot of Irishmen all thieves & blackguards but good to fight friend or foe". His last letter is dated 12 August and FE is mindful of the shooting season at home: "I cannot let today pass without writing you a line from the capital of Zululand to wish you all a jolly good day at home and good sport" - in Britain 12 August is "the glorious twelfth" the start of the red grouse shooting season. Then follows a mournful description of the aftermath of the battle at Ulundi 4 July which brought about the end of Zulu power where the streams "are now full of dead Zulus … One sees but few of the dead about they must have been eaten by dogs & birds & perhaps buried by their own people & it is difficult to believe that 1500 were killed the figure is nearer to 6000; many bodies are of course in the dongas dry gullies & in the kraals some of which one can't go into on account of the stench. - I don't think we shall be able to stay here long on sanitary grounds". Shortly after this the letter breaks off; a subsequent note on the first page reads: "13th August Hurrah! Off for a dart after Cetewayo better game than grouse God Bless you all FE". Angoff, Charles
EMMA LAZARUS, POET, JEWISH ACTIVIST, PIONEER ZIONIST
Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 12 pages. 23 cm. Printed in brown ink on cream paper, with illustrated wraps. Contains the lecture delivered by Charles Angoff to commemorate the poem The New Colossus at the base of the Statue of Liberty in 1978, which affords extensive documentation of the literary biography and political activism of Emma Lazarus, one of the first renowned Jewish writers in American literary history. Includes facsimile copy of the manuscript of New Colossus as well portrait of Emma Lazarus; with frontispiece dedication to Charles Angoff and his portrait as well, who did not live to see this publication in print. Emma Lazarus (18491887) , U. S. Poet, essayist, and activist. Lazarus was born in New York on July 22, 1849, to Moses Lazarus, a wealthy industrialist of Sephardi heritage, and his wife Esther Nathan Lazarus of Ashkenazi background. Both sides of her family had been in America since the Revolution. Lazarus, who was educated at home by private tutors, was originally attracted to classical and romantic art and literature. During the course of her career, she struck up tutelary relationships with important male writers, especially Ralph Waldo Emerson, and including Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Henry James. Her early works included Poems and Translations: Written Between the Ages of Fourteen and Sixteen, published privately by her father in 1867, a novel Alide: An Episode of Goethe's Life (1874) , and a historical tragedy, The Spagnoletto (1876) , as well as a translation of poems by Heinrich Heine, accompanied by a biographical study. By the time she wrote her best-known poem, The New Colossus (1883) , a hymn to America, the Mother of Exiles, she had repudiated the glorification of male conquering power, aestheticism, and empty ceremony and asserted instead the power of womanhood, the comfort of motherhood, and the Hebraic prophetic values of compassion and consolation. Lazarus began her return to Jewish tradition in the late 1870s, studying Hebrew and reading Graetz's History of the Jews and George Eliot's novel Daniel Deronda, with its plea for a Jewish national revival. Lazarus began to publish translations of the medieval Spanish-Jewish poets, Judah Halevi , Solomon ibn Gabirol , and others. The Russian pogroms of 1881 and the May Laws of 1882 fired both her social consciousness and her poetic imagination, prompting a series of essays in American journals, especially in Century Magazine (May 1882) , where she replied to an antisemitic article by a Russian journalist, Madame Z. Ragozin. The Dance Unto Death, a verse tragedy about the burning of the Jews of Nordhausen during the Black Death appeared in Songs of a Semite (1882) , dedicated to George Eliot, the illustrious writer who did most among the artists of our day towards elevating and ennobling the spirit of Jewish Nationality. Lazarus's series of 14 essays, ironically entitled Epistle to the Hebrews, written from November 1882 to February 1883, were intended to bring before the Jewish public
facts and critical observations
to arouse a more logical and intelligent estimate of the duties of the hour. Lazarus also involved herself in the practical work of helping new immigrants adjust to America, founding the Hebrew Technical Institute for Vocational Training. In 1883 she sailed to London, armed with letters of introduction from Henry James to well-placed people in England, Jews and non-Jews, who might help her in her effort towards the establishment of a Jewish national home-land. A decade before Theodore Herzl launched the Zionist movement, Lazarus argued in poetry and prose for Palestine as a safe haven for oppressed Jews everywhere. Lazarus, who never married, died of cancer at the age of 38. After her death, her sister, Josephine Lazarus, prohibited the inclusion of anything Jewish in the collected edition of her works that appeared in 1889. The New Colossus, with its famous image of huddled masses yearning to breathe free, was engraved on a memorial plaque and affixed to the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in 1903.
