br. Il racconto di Bedeschi che prosegue il classico "Centomila gavette di ghiaccio", raccontando il dramma dei soldati italiani sacrificati dal regime fascista. È il 1943, le truppe italiane rientrano dalla disfatta sul fronte russo. Gli alpini superstiti, dopo essere stati ricoverati e spesso amputati per congelamento, e dopo aver riabbracciato per un breve periodo le loro famiglie, vengono ricondotti ai loro reparti e schierati al confine con i territori jugoslavi occupati. Qui li sorprenderà l'armistizio dell'8 settembre e ognuno di loro, a tu per tu con la propria coscienza, deciderà il da farsi: tornare a casa e lasciarsi alle spalle la vita militare, salire sui monti con i partigiani o accodarsi alle nascenti brigate repubblichine. E affronterà inesorabilmente le conseguenze delle proprie scelte. Uscito per la prima volta nel 1966, è il racconto di una grande tragedia collettiva ma anche individuale, che rappresenta gli stati d'animo di coloro che dopo l'armistizio si sono ritrovati abbandonati senza un chiaro riferimento ideale e politico.
