OEUVRES RÉCENTES DE REMO BRINDISI: EXPOSITION DU 6 JUIN AU 6 JUILLET 1974
1st Edition. Original Green Boards. 8vo. [59] pages ; 20 cm. In French. Title translates into English as, Recent Works Of Remo Brindisi: Exhibition From June 6th To July 6th 1974. Remo Brindisi (1918 1996) was an Italian painter
(He) formed the Gruppo di Linea together with Gianni Dova and Ibrahim Kodra and was later associated with the realist movement, while maintaining, however, complete autonomy with respect to the major artistic trends of the age. His focus on issues of social commitment and protest culminated in the period 196061 with a series of large paintings devoted to the history of Fascism, in which figurative painting of an expressionist character was combined with an approach modeled on the examples of Art Informel

BRITISH ARMY
Manual of Military Law. War Office 1914 [Sixth Edition]. THE GREAT WAR ISSUE
8vo., Sixth Edition, endpapers lightly browned, fore-edges lightly dust-soiled; original red cloth, gilt back, very neatly recased with all advertisement endpapers preserved, a very good, clean copy. With 17pp publisher's catalogue on pink stock bound in at front and rear. The compilation of the Manual of Military Law was initiated by Secretary of State for War Stanley in 1879. In order to produce a single comprehensive manual the Rules of Procedure required considerable legal amendment, including the repeal and replacement of the Army Discipline and Regulation Act 1879 by the Army Act 1881. The first edition was approved by both Childers and Hartington and published in 1884. The present edition contains an entirely new chapter on the laws and usages of war, revisions resulting from the Army Reforms of 1908, and (notably) the inclusion for the first time of the Official Secrets Act. It is arguably the most significant single issue, containing as it does the broadest set of amendments stemming from sea changes in service structure and practice. Fortunately it was completed in time for the conflict about to come. COPIES OF THE SIXTH EDITION ARE UNACCOUNTABLY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. A RARE SURVIVAL.

BRITISH FIRST ARMY
Thanksgiving Service for the Victory granted to the Allies in North Africa.
N.p. n.d. 1943. Sm. 4to. Sole Edition 4pp leaflet folded once printed in black; some very faint age-staining else a near fine copy. The rarest of all the major Services of Thanksgiving throughout the British Army in WWII this humble document is considerably harder to find than its Second or Eighth Army counterparts. Anderson's First Army was formed in November 1942 as the spearhead of the land forces of TORCH the Allied landings is Algeria and Morocco. Taking its final shape as Eastern Task Force in January 1943 it eventually comprised American II Corps British V and IX Corps and French XIX Corps. Following the landings First Army attempted to secure the Tunisian shoreline but time was against it and the campaign became principally one of long-distance logistics. After the success of Eighth Army at Alamein First Army carried eastwards the main thrust of 18 Army Group's offensive that resulted in the final defeat of the Axis in North Africa in mid-1943 a victory often compared strategically with Stalingrad. Its job done First Army was disbanded later in the year and its units reallocated. Rare in any condition. N.p., unknown

British Political Satire: War of Jenkins' Ear
THE PREFERMENT OF THE BARBER'S BLOCK. THE CARDINAL IN THE DUMPS WITH THE HEAD OF THE COLOSSUS caption title
London 1740. Engraving with hand-coloring 14 x 8 3/4 inches. Minor soiling. Color quite bright and fresh. Very good. A satire against French Cardinal Fleury Chief Minister to Louis XV published during the frenzy of celebrations over Admiral Vernon's victory over the Spanish at the Battle of Porto Bello - an enthusiasm which the Cardinal apparently did not share. Fleury was an ally of Robert Walpole whose power was in decline and had reluctantly agreed to hostilities with Spain. Fleury is seen here seated reaching out toward a medallion of Admiral Vernon and holding a scroll which reads "His iron will get ye better of my gold" and "G-d he'll take all our acquisitions in America." On the wall behind him are several small crude illustrations one of which appears to be a portly Walpole hanging from a gallows above the slogan "No matter if he is longer than ye gallows." A head sits atop a pole perhaps alluding to the fact that many people would be pleased to see Walpole's head positioned thus. Engraved by George Bickham. Only one copy located in OCLC at Northwestern University. BRITISH LIBRARY CATALOG 2454. OCLC 43946235. unknown books

BRITISH WAR OFFICE
Hong Kong and the New Territories. North Sheet.
London : War Office August 1945. 780 by 1050mm. 30.75 by 41.25 inches. Chromolithograph map with manuscript annotations in pencil and pen with three insets and diagrams to right margin minor browning a few nicks and tears to margins. A unique map of Hong Kong and the New Territories with contemporary manuscript annotations showing the liberation of Hong Kong from Japanese occupation. This map which shows Hong Kong Kowloon and the New Territories was first published by the British War Office in 1936. The present example a second edition was published shortly after the end of the Second World War when Britain reoccupied the islands following four years of Japanese occupation. Thick red lines across the map indicate the "all weather roads" that could be relied upon for travel and communications across the region. Extending from Lantau Island to the west to Mirs Bay in the east from the Chinese city of Shenzhen in the north to the southern Soko Islands it is generally considered one of the most detailed maps of Hong Kong made in the early twentieth century. The present example is made more interesting by the copious manuscript annotations that appear across the centre of the map. A grid has been drawn over Hong Kong in pencil marking the lines of longitude and latitude more precisely. Discolouration indicates that it this lower central portion that was the primary focus of the map during its use. Annotations in pen identify features such as "Dockyard Stores" "Canal" and "Coal Dump" and military information including "Officers Mess" and "2 AA Guns". There are also numerous annotations listing the number of Japanese soldiers in Victoria these include "3000 Japs" together with a further 200 with horses and the Japanese Officer's Mess. Japanese troop numbers are noted on Kowloon totalling just under 2000 men. More annotations can be seen further north near modern day Shenzhen marking the location of the Head Quarters for both the Hong Kong Artillery Force and the Defence Force as well as military companies and infantry divisions. A note in the upper right margin identifies it as the hand of "Capt Owens" an officer in the British Task Force that landed in Hong Kong on 30th August 1945 to take back control of the territory from the Japanese. Established in 1857 the British War Office was the governmental department responsible for the administration of the British Army until 1964 when its functions were transferred to the Ministry of Defense. During this time it produced many maps with the number of publications increasing rapidly during years of conflict. War Office, unknown

The first three sets are complimentary Volumes Four and Five work together and Volume Six is separate. Here is a description of the items: Volumes One to Three. These three albums are individually bound in blue cloth with a gilt border and stamping that states “The British War Relief Society Inc. of the United States of Americaâ€. The trio contains hundreds of original and possibly unique black and white photographs of the work of Cruger who appears in many images and the British War Relief Society. There are calligraphic captions besides many of the photographs such as “Bertram Cruger with eh Mayors of certain towns†and “A country house converted into a much needed rest-home for seamenâ€. There are also photographs of the King and Queen touring. Of greatest interest are listings of charities and how much Americans donated to them. For example in Volume One there are photographs of the Alexandra Orphanage with a notation that £2652 was donated to this particular charity. As a different example 204 canteen trucks were donated with £38000¬¬¬. At the start of Volume Two the caption states that 295 ambulances were donated thanks to £100000 donated and there is a photograph of the Duke of Kent inspecting them. Some of my favorite photographs are of the moat around the Tower of London complete with planted crops. Volume Four and Five. These two albums are bound in red cloth and gilt stamped “Bertram De N. Cruger†on the covers. These albums contain photographs but no calligraphic captions but also have newspaper clippings related to the work of the British War Relief Society. In addition Cruger laid in many letters written to him by prominent people. Perhaps the most valuable letter is an August 23 1940 missive from Charles de Gaulle. There are also letters from the Queen’s Private Secretary Anthony Eden and other notables. There are newspaper clipping from The Times dated June 4 1941 detailing American generosity The New York Times article headlined “London Children Give ‘Relief†to U.S.†and many other clippings about Cruger during the war. There are typed speeches given by Cruger. There are photographs showing the assistance given to young children to young men and to firemen. There are also photographs showing blitz damage and the presentation of American ambulances to the Soviet Union. There is also a folder of loose photographs including a small one signed by Clementine Churchill. Volume Six. The final album is Cruger’s typed memoirs of his wartime experiences entitled “An American In Londonâ€. Apparently not published there are handwritten corrections cross outs and notations. It is loosely bound and many of the pages have two hole punches. There albums were compiled by an unknown author. The first five are in fine condition with light wear to the covers mild staining and a few photographs or captions that have shaken loose. The sixth volume the memoir has some more wear than the other albums. This album set is unique and came directly from the Cruger descendants. It has never been on the market before. An amazing and emotional memorial to British and American friendship during the darkest hours. hardcover books
