Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927) was a British-born author of books on political philosophy, natural science, and his posthumous father-in-law Richard Wagner. His two-volume book Die Grundlagen des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts (The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century) (1899) became one of the many references for the pan-Germanic movement of the early 20th century, and, later, of Nazi racial philosophy. Chamberlain had attended Wagner's Bayreuth Festival in 1882 and struck up a close correspondence with his wife Cosima. In 1908 he married Eva Wagner, the composer's daughter, and the next year he moved to Germany and became an important member of the "Bayreuth Circle" of German nationalist intellectuals. By the time World War I broke out in 1914, Chamberlain remained an Englishman only by virtue of his name and nationality. In 1916 he also acquired German citizenship. He had already begun propagandizing on behalf of the German government and continued to do so throughout the war. His vociferous denunciations of his land of birth, were the culmination of his rejection of his native England's stifling capitalism, in favor of a rustic and ultimately naive German Romanticism - Wiki. Attaché aux valeurs démocratiques, il perçut très tôt la nature du fascisme et ses visées hégémoniques. Son Journal d'un militaire d'occasion s'ouvre par les années d'avant-guerre, que ce témoin privilégié analyse avec acuité, et se poursuit par son carnet de route de lieutenant de réserve sur la campagne de 1940 et la débâcle. Il est suivi d'observations sur la politique de Vichy que Gilbert de Chambrun, ayant rejoint le ministère des Affaires étrangères, put analyser de près, de juillet 1940 à juillet 1941, époque où, impuissant face à la collaboration qui s'aggravait, il se fit mettre en disponibilité. La deuxième partie de l'ouvrage évoque le retour à Marvejols et l'engagement dans la Résistance. De l'entrée dans la clandestinité à l'unification des mouvements de Résistance, Gilbert de Chambrun, nommé chef régional des FFI, partagera la vie des partisans qui luttèrent contre l'occupant et ses complices. Après les combats de la Libération et le retour à l'ordre républicain, le colonel FFI de Chambrun, redevenu lieutenant de réserve, participera à la formation de deux régiments d'infanterie, le 80e et le 8le, composés de maquisards volontaires qui, au sein de la 1re armée française, se battront victorieusement en Allemagne. Biographie: Né en 1909 à Paris, Gilbert de Chambrun, après des études à l'Institut de sciences politiques, a passé le concours des Affaires étrangères en 1934. Après différents postes et la période de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et de la Résistance qui sont traités dans ce livre, il sera, après 1945, député de la Lozère jusqu'en 1955. Il réintégrera les Affaires étrangères en 1956 jusqu'à sa retraite, en 1976. Gilbert de Chambrun a été aussi conseiller municipal et maire de Marvejols pendant dix-huit ans. Questo saggio non si limita a descrivere lo svolgimento delle battaglie, ma ci coinvolge con antefatti e spiegazioni nella preparazione politica e diplomatica delle varie campagne e soprattutto mette in luce gli aspetti autentici del carattere di Napoleone, al di là del personaggio mitizzato dalla Storia, ripercorrendone la vita: dai tempi dell'oscuro servizio nell'esercito regio a Valence, alle campagne d'Italia, dove il giovanissimo generale è alla testa di una pittoresca e invincibile "canaglia in armi"; a Ulm, dove un esercito fu sconfitto solo con le marce; poi la fulminea manovra che annientò quello che era stato l'esercito di Federico il Grande, l'invasione in Spagna e la guerriglia, i problemi e le tragiche vicende della campagna di Russia dove Napoleone affrontò enormi difficoltà logistiche; infine la campagna del 1814, forse la più brillante anche se si chiuse con la disfatta di Waterloo. L'opera di Chandler, corredata di mappe e cartine delle battaglie, di un indice dei nomi e di un imponente apparato di note, è un classico insostituibile della storia moderna.
