br. Il Diario del capitano dei bersaglieri Giuseppe De Carli inizia il 10 luglio 1943, il giorno dello sbarco in Sicilia delle truppe alleate. L'«Operazione Husky» fu colossale: circa 1.400 navi con migliaia di mezzi da sbarco e circa 150mila uomini. Contrariamente a quanto si pensa, sia lo sbarco sia l'avanzata anglo-americana non furono agevoli. Le forze tedesche e i reparti italiani opposero una tenace resistenza, impegnando gli Alleati in duri combattimenti con notevole spargimento di sangue. Questo Diario inedito racconta con cruda verità il dramma di quei giorni, manifesta con impressionante evidenza lo sconvolgimento della coscienza di un capitano dopo l'8 settembre 1943 e, estendendosi il testo sin quasi alla fine della guerra, descrive la difficile condizione dei militari italiani nelle mani degli angloamericani dopo l'Armistizio e la dichiarazione italiana di guerra alla Germania. Enrico Cattaneo è un ragazzo di 19 anni chiamato a portare le armi e spedito in Grecia quando lo Stato fascista aveva già arruolato tutte le classi militari idonee e da ultimo si era visto costretto a richiamare dei ragazzi che non avevano fatto il servizio militare e la cui istruzione fu rabberciata in pochi giorni. Disperso con altri pochi nella lotta coi partigiani greci, spinto dalla fame si consegna a un reparto tedesco. Poi dopo l'otto settembre, rifiutatosi di combattere con loro come militare dell'esercito fascista della Repubblica di Salò, viene fatto prigioniero e deportato in Russia ove attraversa vicende di ogni genere fino a che, miracolosamente, riesce a tornare a casa. L'Introduzione è di Edoardo Bressan, storico, professore ordinario di Storia contemporanea presso l'Università degli studi di Macerata. La Presentazione del Diario di Enrico Cattaneo è di Luigi Trezzi, storico economico, professore ordinario presso l'Università degli studi di Milano Bicocca. Le Note storiche sono di Paolo De Carli, giurista pubblicista, professore ordinario presso l'Università degli studi di Milano.
