Martin per le sue Cronache del Ghiaccio e del Fuoco, per l'incredibile successo televisivo del Trono di Spade. Ma come si svolse il vero conflitto? È stata realmente la punizione divina per l'usurpazione di Enrico IV Bolingbroke ai danni del legittimo Riccardo II come la propaganda Tudor ha cercato di tramandare? Oppure è stato il frutto malato della deriva morale che travolse la nobiltà inglese alla fine del Medioevo, come ricostruito dalla storiografia vittoriana? Molteplici personalità presero parte al conflitto: re e regine, usurpatori e consiglieri malfidi, vittime innocenti e sovrani impazziti. Uno spazio particolare è riservato nel libro alle molte protagoniste femminili di quei decenni. Parleremo anche delle battaglie che infiammarono il paese, delle rotte e delle ritirate, dei tradimenti e dei colpi di scena, molti dei quali ripresi dallo stesso Martin, mettendo in luce come la sua fonte principale sia stata non tanto la storia di per sé, ma la sua reinterpretazione a opera di Shakespeare, il primo a riunire sotto un unico arco narrativo l'intera sequenza di conflitti dinastici che insanguinò l'Inghilterra fra la deposizione di Riccardo II nel 1399 e la salita al trono di Enrico VII Tudor all'indomani della vittoria di Bosworth nel 1485. Accanto alla storia illustreremo come i fatti siano stati riletti dalla letteratura (a partire da Walter Scott, che a quella guerra civile assegnò il nome con cui è stata poi per sempre identificata), dal cinema, dalla televisione e dagli altri media contemporanei.

Childers 1870-1922 was an English born and Irish raised author with a passion for sailing who became a Irish Nationalist smuggled guns to Ireland and was executed by the Irish Free State in 1922 during the Civil War. Childers' most famous novel was "The Riddle of the Sands". Owner's name front paste-down only mark in book binding tight. Light foxing to endpapers and edges of text block. Rear cover has a faint 1" stain top rear cover otherwise covers are clean with gilt lettering bright. Book condition VG. Edward Arnold hardcover
