CHESTERTON Gilbert Keith
LETTERE a un VECCHIO GARIBALDINO. [Pamphlet di propaganda alleata, antitedesco]. ("Italy, twice hast thou spoken; and time is athirst for the third. Swinburne - Due volte sonò la tua voce, Italia, e i tempi attendon la terza").
In-8° (24x15,5), pp. 15. Brossura editoriale.

Chesterton Gilbert Keith; Cervo M. (cur.)

CHETLAIN, Augustus L.
Recollections of Seventy Years
Galena: The Gazette Publishing Company 1899. Hardcover. 8vo. Original green blind-embossed cloth gilt. 304pp. Frontispiece decorative endpapers. Errata slip tipped in. Very good. Mild bit of faint edgewear; single missing leaf pp. 15-16 provided with expert modern facsimile on period paper. Tight and handsome first edition of this quite scarce memoir by one of Galena Illinois' famed nine generals U.S. Grant among them which William E. Parrish describes: "Although the great bulk of these memoirs recounts Chetlain's experiences as a soldier the book also contains many insights of wartime Galena Ill." Chetlain 1824-1914 was supposedly the first Illinoisan to volunteer in the Civil War and formed a regiment with his friend Grant; he participated in a number of major battles and rose to the rank of brevet brigadier general; after the war he entered banking in Chicago serving as director of the Chicago Stock Exchange. Discreet ex-library the only markings being a small blind-embossing on the title page and on the front pastedown the tasteful bookplate of Chetlain's hometown library: Galena Illinois. Even better this copy was given the library in 1961 by the Hughlett family. Samuel Hughlett 1808-64 was an early Galena settler who owned smelting furnaces on a branch of the Galena River now named the Hughlett Branch; he inherited many slaves from his father's Kentucky plantation but brought them to Galena and manumitted them. Hughlett is mentioned a number of times in this volume. A sharp copy of this scarce title with a choice local connection. FLAKE 1264. NEVINS II 145. The Gazette Publishing Company hardcover

Commission Europenne du Danube. Protocole No CXLIX. Seance du 17 October 1862.
Very Good French Paperback. Folio. (34 x 22 cm). In French. 6 p. First edition of the session of October 17, 1862, of this official printed 139th protocol in French of the agreement in which the Danube Commission was accepted to be established which was authorized by the Treaty of Paris (1856) after the close of the Crimean War, between the Ottoman Empire, the United Kingdom, and France, which won the Crimean War with Russia. The European Commission of the Danube, or, in French, Commission Européenne du Danube, the CED is one of the Commissions of the Danube River authorized by the Treaty of Paris (1856) after the close of the Crimean War. The CED had authority over the three mouths of the river - the Chilia in the north, the Sulina in the middle, and St. George in the south which was originally designed to last for only two years. Instead, it lasted eighty-two years. A separate commission, the International Danube Commission, or IDC, was authorized to control commerce and improvements upriver beyond the Danube Delta and was supposed to be permanent, but it was not formally organized until after 1918.
