On the day the war ends a volunteer enlists in the Union Army and collects his $300 bounty! 1 page 6.75 x 8.5 inches -- a Statement of Recruitment whereby Freuter a New York City druggist age 30 is allowed to join the Union Army and receive his $300 bounty on the very day the war has ended April 10 1865. Also signed by the Mustering Officer Captain S. C. Wagner. Note: in the very last days of the war it was not uncommon for deceitful Mustering Officers to allow a bounty to be paid and then splitting the money with the Recruit. Remarkable bespoke bound collection of Civil War extracts illustrations and ephemera
1880. Newspaper clippings maps and illustrations laid down on card stock and bordered in black ink others extracted complete plus some contemporary photographs engravings and other pictorial material. 31 vols. 4to & large 8vo. Half contemporary morocco and marbled boards spines & boards gilt t.e.g bookplate of C.B. Farwell to front pastedowns. Newspaper clippings maps and illustrations laid down on card stock and bordered in black ink others extracted complete plus some contemporary photographs engravings and other pictorial material. 31 vols. 4to & large 8vo. A remarkable collection of newspaper dispatches maps plans portraits and illustrated scenes of battles and views. The maps portraits and illustrations are drawn from a variety of published sources including The New York World but many are coloured or engraved and on heavier stock. This set provides an incredible overview of how the Civil War was not only reported but depicted in a multitude of media. <br/><br/>The bulk of the set consists of fourteen volumes of "Dispatches to the World Newspaper" spanning the period between January 1861 and June 1865. The New York World newspaper commenced publication in 1860 and was ongoing until 1931. It was a major organ for the Democratic Party and Joseph Pulitzer was its head from 1883-1911. In its first years however it was run by Manton Marble. In 1864 the paper was shut down for a short period having printed a document purportedly by Lincoln but obviously forged. <br/><br/>A third of the set is devoted to the Southern Rebellion. The ten volumes illustrating it are as follows: Plans maps and battlefields; Forts and batteries Military uniforms; Battle scenes and incidents; Emblems Arms and Endurance; portraits; war pictures many coloured patriotic covers by Charles Magnus a full page watercolour of greiving soldier2 vols; scenes and views 3 vols. The remainder of the set comprises: Portraits of Army Officers 3 vols; Portraits of US Representatives 2 vols; Portraits of US Senators; and Portraits of Distinguished Men.<br/><br/>The set was formerly owned and likely compiled for C.B. Farwell whose bookplate adorns the front pastedown of each volume. This would be Charles B. Farwell 1823-1903 the former US Senator and Member of the House of Representatives. Farwell was a Democrat and this is certainly the type of set that might be owned by a politician whose philanthropy extended into education. Furthermore the bookplate itself was printed in Chicago and Farwell was a representative for Illinois. He was a major benefactor of Lake Forest College. unknown books

SOUTHERN WATCHMAN - EXTRA
Athens Ga 1865. Broadside 15 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches. Minor edge wear some toning and spotting two small dark stains old folds. Overall good condition. An interesting broadside newspaper extra concerning the Union occupation of Athens Georgia at the end of the Civil War. The paper was printed nearly a month after the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered and ten days or so after Gen. Joseph Johnston surrendered to Sherman the Confederate forces active in the Carolinas Georgia and Florida. The first two columns include passages on "Teachings of the War" "Armistice" and "Good Advice." Each of these articles struggle to find meaning in the end of the recent conflagration providing an important glimpse into the minds of the Southern sympathizers. The third column begins: <br> <br> "New Arrival! The Federal forces under command of Brig. Genl. Palmer entered our place on the 4th inst. The conduct of the troops since their occupation of the town has been good and reflects great credit upon Genl. Palmer as a strict disciplinarian. We hope that our citizens will endeavor by kind and courteous treatment toward the soldiery to encourage a continuance of the protection which they seem willing to afford." <br> <br> The editors of the SOUTHERN WATCHMAN argue for peaceful acceptance of the Reconstructionist Union forces and mince no words in their harangue on other Southern newspapers calling for the continuation of the War: <br> <br> "Below we give extracts from the SALISBURY WATCHMAN and CAROLINA SPARTAN - two papers that have from the beginning of the war advocated the policy of fighting on until the last man and dollar were exhausted and by their vile traitorous and insidious words exerted a strong influence over the minds of the South and thousands of widows and orphans who are now suffering every privation and horror connected with the war can attribute them to the false and unscrupulous arguments set forth and spread out in these papers. It is an easy thing and one that requires but little valor or manly spirit to cry out 'War to the last!' when comfortably ensconced at home surrounded by every luxury and comfort that civil life affords and where no Yankee bullets can reach. Such has been the position of those who govern the Southern press who keeping their devoted carcasses at a respectable distance in the rear still cry out for more lives to sacrifice and more money to squander to enable them to secure a foundation for their weak and rotten Confederacy to stand upon." <br> <br> The paper then quotes a long passage from each of these other newspapers. The editors of the SALISBURY WATCHMAN call for armed resistance before reporting that they themselves are preparing to "leave you for some spot on earth where Yankees cannot come." The CAROLINA SPARTAN incites the people to lay their lives "on the altar of Southern independence" before insisting in the last sentence that "we advise our friends to refrain from hostilities." <br> <br> A rare broadside relating to the delicate psychological condition and tenuous state of feelings among groups of Southerners who have been forced to realize that the fight for the Confederacy is over and they have lost. unknown books

Philadelphia: John Smith 1865. Lithograph 21 1/4 x 26 1/2 inches. Margins with surface rubbing and soiling. Four-inch closed tear in upper margin descending into the image two-and-one-half- inch closed tear in lower margin ascending into the image no paper loss in either case. Backed by later paper mending tears and a few small chips in edges of sheet. Very nice tone to the image. Good overall. Apparently a rare unrecorded proof of this lithograph commemorating the meeting between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9 1865 at which Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia and the Civil War essentially came to an end. This print is not only important as a proof giving evidence of how the image was reworked for final publication but also as part of a series of prints commemorating Lee's surrender that did so much to bolster the image of Grant as the "savior of the Union." "No single event of Ulysses S. Grant's life inspired more prints than the surrender he accepted at Appomattox." - Neely & Holzer. <br> <br> The present image bears the title SURRENDER OF GEN. LEE only with no publication copyright or artist information. In the image Grant and Lee meet in the open air before a large tree not indoors as was actually the case. Grant standing to the right holds the surrender terms in his right hand extended toward Lee. Lee one gloved hand on his hip and the other on the hilt of his sword stares steadily at Grant but makes no move toward the paper. Grant and Lee are each accompanied by a pair of aides who gaze at each other suspiciously. In the receding background thousands of troops are shown formed in long curving lines while a handful of officers ride horses. In the version of this print as finally published by John Smith of Philadelphia the positions of Grant Lee and their aides have been reversed and Lee extends his hand toward Grant ready to accept the terms of surrender. The configuration of the armies in the background has been modified and a prominent scar has been added to the trunk of the tree between the two leaders. In both this proof and the final version of the print Grant's uniform has been improved from what he actually wore - he still does not match the splendor of Lee but he is not shown wearing the uniform of a private with the straps of a Lieutenant General. "Here" as Neely & Holzer observe "the lithographer's notions of creating a picture for posterity do battle with widely reported truth." The title of the final version was modified to THE SURRENDER OF GENERAL LEE AND HIS ENTIRE ARMY TO LIEUT. GENERAL GRANT APRIL 9th 1865 Library of Congress control number 2015647830. Old folds light dusting Very Good.<br/><br/> The Extra leads with a report from Washington on the battle at Culpeper Virginia on August 9 commonly known as the Battle of Cedar Mountain. The Confederates led by Stonewall Jackson repelled the advance of heavily outnumbered Union troops. "Many are mortally wounded in the arms and legs." Better results for the Union are reported from Hudson Missouri where Porter's Guerillas were routed. "The Confederates scattered in all directions. Some of the prisoners captured had taken the oath and given bonds." <br/> The Extra also reports the news doubtless unwelcome that the Secretary of War has ordered the draft of 300000 men about 60000 of whom will come from New York. Finally the Confederates are reported to have sought a truce in Culpeper in order to bury their dead. Fredericksburg 1862. 4pp. Folio. Old folds. Tanned light wear and soiling several very small holes. Good plus. An anti-secession newspaper published in Confederate Virginia by Unionist James W. Hunnicutt. Hunnicutt published his paper until August 1862 when he fled Fredericksburg because of his Union sympathies. How he got away with it as long as he did is remarkable when one reads the contents. This issue includes a report on Rebel cruelty news of the continued fighting in Charleston updates on the activities of the Army of the Potomac and an interesting column outlining twelve ways in which those advocating secession lie just like the devil: <br> <br> "We have always known and ever maintained that the only security the South and Southern institutions had was contained in the provisions of the Federal Constitution. We indignantly spurn the base imputation and pronounce it an unmitigated secession falsehood. The traitors and enemies of the South are the Secession leaders of the South. Where are the men who fired up the Southern heart and precipitated this once glorious independent prosperous and happy country into the present terrible revolution.Abolitionism and secession combined to effect the overthrow of our government - the downfall of our country - Great God! Vicksburg Ms.: J.M. Swords Proprietor 1863. Folio broadside printed on wallpaper. Old folds closed tear in blank margin of one fold some spotting. Very good. The newspapers printed on wallpaper in Vicksburg during its siege were widely noted at the time and the Union troops who took possession of the city on July 4 completed and distributed the last issue standing in type. Numerous facsimile versions were published later. This is the first reproduction issue probably produced in the North as a commemoration later in 1863. Brigham identifies this as the first reproduction noting its minor variations from the original mainly the substitution of the article "Recent Federal Losses at Vicksburg" in the last column. Partly printed documents completed in manuscript varying sizes measuring in the range of 7-7.5" x 9-9.75". Matted and mounted behind glass in a 17" x 34" gilt decorative frame. Very Good.<br /> <br /> Former Confederates were required to sign oaths of loyalty before regaining citizenship and voting rights. The language of these three oaths differs slightly but each requires the signer to "defend the Constitution of the United States" particularly in reference to the emancipation of slaves.<br /> Davis's oath taken in the District of Columbia is printed at page 105 of Stanley Turkel's book "Heroes of the American Reconstruction" 2005. Davis's background and State of residence are not disclosed. Arthur McMurtry was a corporal in the 26th Texas Cavalry. He is listed in the 1870 Federal Census and two later Galveston directories 1888-1891 as a bookkeeper. Cousinard was mayor of East Baton Rouge from 1857-1859. He enlisted with Company B of the 9th Battalion Louisiana Infantry in 1862. After signing his amnesty oath he became sheriff of East Baton Rouge on May 11 1864.<br /> Arthur McMurtry is distantly related to Pulitzer Prize winner Larry McMurtry: his great-grandfather John McMurtry 1748-1790 was the brother of Larry McMurtry's great-great-great-great-grandfather Samuel McMurtry 1744-1796. A fascinating trio of printed general orders and circulars issued from Hilton Head by the Union Army's Department of the South in the two months after Lee's surrender. The three publications include a total of six general orders and a circular. Each touches upon a subject related to the end of war and the various issues that must be dealt with to ensure peace and settle military enrollment and business matters. The three works here include: <br> <br> 1 "Headquarters Department of the South Hilton Head S. C. May 31 1865." General Orders No. 80 May 11 1865 and General Orders No. 90 May 11 1865. The latter reads in part: "Punishment of Guerrillas. All the forces of the enemy east of the Mississippi river having been duly surrendered.under agreements of parole and disbandment.it is Ordered that from and after the first day of June 1865 any and all persons found in arms against the United States or who may commit acts of hostility against it.will be regarded as guerrillas and punished with death." <br> <br> 2 "Headquarters Department of the South Hilton Head S. C. June 6 1865." General Orders No. 83 signed in type by Secretary of State William H. Seward May 29 1865. Also signed in ink by acting Assistant Adjutant General T.D. Hodges. The order reads in part: <br> <br> "A copy of the President's Amnesty Proclamation.is herewith appended.so as to insure its benefits to the people and guard the Government against fraud.The oath prescribed in the proclamation may be taken and subscribed before any commissioned officer civil military or naval in the service of the United States.All who receive such oaths are hereby authorized to give certified copies.to this department where they will be deposited and remain in the archives of the Government." <br> <br> 3 "Headquarters Department of the South Hilton Head S. C. June 16 1865." General Orders No. 94 May 29 1865; Circular No. 23 June 5 1865; General Orders No. 100 May 28 1865; General Orders No. 101 May 30 1865 and June 10 1865. General Orders No. 94 includes a telegram concerning returned prisoners of war. It reads in part: "The Secretary of War directs that returned Prisoners of War enlisted men who have endured the hardships of Andersonville Florence Salisbury and other rebel prisons be mustered out as soon as possible and allowed three months extra pay." <br> <br> General Orders No. 100 reads in part: "Commanding officers of regiments will at once muster for commutation of rations all men of their respective commands who have been prisoners of war and have not been mustered for or paid commutation of rations for the time they were in the rebel hands." Two Manuscript Letters Signed by a New Jersey Soldier to His Family Describing Conditions in Virginia.
Three leaves two 8 x10 sheets and one 5x10 text on all sides and comes with typed transcripts. Normal aging and browning and a few tears at folds. The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark New Jersey who was the son of English immigrants and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal at the time these letters were written. The letters talk about the desolation of the Virginia countryside. "Not a fence or a decent house is to be seen for miles… the black remains of Camp fires with the filth of the many camps of both armies are seen on most every farm. Each card standard size 3 9/16 x 2 1/2 inches; 91 x 63 mm. The usual suits are replaced with "National Emblems" including blue Federal eagles blue 13-star shields red stars and red American flags. Jacks are replaced by majors Queens by the Goddess of Liberty and Kings are replaced by colonels. The ace of eagles is a large illustration with publisher's imprints as well. Backs of cards are printed in blue with a shield flags a star with the letters "US" an anchor and oak leaves and acorns. Housed together in the original pull-top box. Box embellished on the front with an images of the Goddess of Liberty and the words " National Emblems!! Something New in the Card World! Time for a Change! Foreign Emblems Used Long Enough in the U.S." The back side of the box reads<br> <br> "THE AMERICAN CARD CO. Confident that the introduction of NATIONAL EMBLEMS in place of Foreign in PLAYING CARDS will be hailed with delight by the American People take pleasure in presenting the UNION PLAYING CARDS. Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon
<p>Showing Union troops arriving in Philadelphia from New Jersey via ferry and marching in formation towards the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon cheered on by Philadelphians. Text at the bottom lists members of the committee and men willing to accept donations for the saloon. This image became a choice souvenir for soldiers passing through Philadelphia.</p> <b>CIVIL WAR.</b>Print. <i>Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon of Philadelphia</i>. In period frame 35 x 29 in. <p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was organized in South Philadelphia in 1861 by grocer Barzilla S. Brown. He began informally distributing food to Union troops traveling through Philadelphia an important rail and steamer hub. The relief effort became official on May 27 1861. The saloon provided soldiers with food drink stamps and paper and offered traveling troops a place to rest. This initial effort differed in some ways from the later Sanitary Fairs that contributed to the care of sick and wounded soldiers. At this point the civilian members were catering to the needs of healthy new recruits.</p><p>In September the Refreshment Saloon added a hospital to aid sick and wounded troops. The saloon supported itself through donations of food clothing cash and later through admission cost to view the Confederate navy vessel <i>Ram</i> which was captured in 1863. After providing social and medical services for four years the saloon closed in late 1865.</p><p><b>James Fuller Queen</b> 1820-1886 apprenticed to learn lithographic draftsmanship. He drew a large variety of lithographs for large printing houses of Wagner & McGuigan Thomas Sinclair and P. S. Duval. He drew views of buildings cities scenic attractions newsworthy events portraits sheet music covers diplomas illustrations for magazines and other images. He also became an outstanding chromolithographer. His view of the "Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon" is one of Queen's most complex works and perhaps the one for which he is best known. He later drew the United States Sanitary Commission Fair in Philadelphia.</p><p><b>Thomas S. Sinclair</b> c. 1805-1881 was born in the Orkney Islands of Scotland and studied lithography in Edinburgh and other cities. He started his own printing firm in Philadelphia in 1838. He was among the first in Philadelphia to experiment with color lithography. From 1854 to 1859 his brother joined him in the firm of Thomas Sinclair & Co. Later his son worked with him in Thomas Sinclair & Son. He published three different hand-colored lithographs by Queen of Brown's Refreshment Saloon and its friendly rival William M. Cooper's Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon in 1861.</p> Thomas Sinclair books

Boston: L. Prang & Co. 1862. Large lithographic poster 38 x 26 inches. Backed with later paper. Old fold lines some minor soiling and wear. Minor loss at a few folds. Nearly very good. A handsome and large-scale map of Virginia from Norfolk to Lynchburg and north to Baltimore and Harper's Ferry. The explanatory cartouche indicates "The extraordinary large scale on which this map is drawn has been adapted to make it just what we designed it to be namely 1st. The most distinct map ever published of the whole Virginia Territory; 2nd. A Marking Map that is a map to mark the change of positions of the Union Forces in red pencil and the Rebel Forces in blue on the receipt of every telegram from the seat of war; for this latter purpose we want plenty of space and a distinctness combined with enough detail not to crowd but to enable us to follow the march of the army as advised by the telegrams. The pencils which we also furnish should be used with a light hand to enable obliterating the marks with the aid of a little soft bread if found necessary. New York 1864. Broadside 9-1/8" x 11-1/2". Printed in two columns light indications at blank top margin of prior matting on blank verso. Near Fine.<br/><br/> The AAS entry for this broadside states that the words at its foot "For sale by all news agents. Price $1 per 100" are identical to the language of several 1864 Republican campaign broadsides published by the National Union Executive Committee Astor House New York. "Presumably this edition was also published by the Republican Party's national committee."<br/> The broadside begins with "EXTRACTS from a Speech by ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS now Vice-President of the Confederate States delivered in the Secession Convention of Georgia on the 31st day of January 1861: 'This step the secession of Georgia once taken can never be recalled; and all the baleful and withering consequences that must follow as you will see will rest on the Convention for all coming time. To attempt to overthrow such a Government as this. is the height of madness folly and wickedness to which I can neither lend my sanction nor my vote'." In his 1868 book 'A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States' Stephens declared the Speech to be a "fabrication."<br/> There follows an answer to the question 'WHO COMMENCED THE WAR' "Those who would throw the guilt of the war upon the shoulders of Mr. Lincoln are requested to read the following catalogue of 'remarkable events' published in a Southern Almanac all of which occurred during the Presidency of Mr. Buchanan."
