Civil War Townsend ED. Assistant Adjutant General War Dept. E. D.
DRAFT COPY OF GENERAL ORDER NO. 171 REGARDING HORSES FOR TRANSPORTATION JUNE 9 1863
G.O. 171 W.D. A.G.O. 1863. Single sheet of lined paper 9.5 x 7.5 in. 2 pp. approx. 220 words. A manuscript copy in a clerical hand signed secretarial by E.D. Townsend. Blind embossed stamp of the Capitol building and "Congress P & P" in upper left corner docketed on the second page. Old fold lines short separation along one fold. General Order No. 171 consisted of five parts regulating the care and disposition of officer's horses. The first section requires that a departing officer turn in his horse for remuneration for not more than he paid for it. The second section states that he cannot sell a horse provided for him and the third and fourth refer to orders to transport horses at the public expense. Finally officers who apply for transfers can not transport their horse from one department to another. The published versions of the General Orders were nearly all issued by Assistant A.G. Townsend Adjutant Generals Office of the War Dept. in Washington DC. Edward Davis Townsend 1817-1893 was born in Boston Massachusetts and graduated from West Point in 1837. He served in the artillery during the Seminole War and then on the northern frontier. Townsend joined the Adjutant General's Department in 1852 serving first on the Pacific coast then in Washington DC during the Civil War. Townsend was charged with gathering and organizing many of the government documents into an official record of the war a project that lasted well beyond his lifetime taking some forty years to complete. see his obituary in the New York Times May 12 1893 and Alan & Barbara Aimone's book "A User's Guide to the Official Records of the American Civil War" Shippensburg PA: 1993. unknown

Civil War 23rd US Colored Infantry Desertion Wood M. Herbert
Letter from a White Officer Commanding an African-American Regiment in the Civil War to His Sister Discussing Pay and Her Husband’s Disappearance
Petersburg Virginia 1864. Single letter four 5 x 8 inch pages folded. Toning and some tears at folds overall excellent condition. M. Herbert Wood c. 1839–deceased was an officer of the 23rd Regiment United States Colored Infantry during the American Civil War. This regiment which consisted of African-American enlisted men with white officers was part of the 4th Division of the IX Corps organized at Camp Casey Virginia. Wood may also have served in the 25th Ohio regiment. A newspaper account from the time alleges that Wood a Mainer had married an Alabama woman who owned a considerable number of enslaved people and then “sold the negroes pocketed the proceeds turned abolitionist abandoned his wife and child and went back to Maine†before joining the Union army.1 Following the Civil War Wood purportedly asked President Andrew Johnson for a position but was denied after testifying that he would side with Congress over the President presumably concerning Reconstruction.

This letter to Wood’s sister Mollie is dated July 16 1864 after the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House and shortly before the Battle of the Crater in which the 23rd suffered significant casualties. Wood describes the Regiment’s dire financial situation apparently having gone months without pay:

“I cannot send any money to you in this letter for the simple reason that I have not any myself. We have not been paid since the last day of Feb and there is not an officer in the Regt that has 5 dollars but we shall be paid I hope soon it cannot be very long and I will then send you as much as you need.â€

He also informs Mollie of some sad intelligence about her husband:

“I do not wish or would not say one single word to injure your feelings but I very much fear that what I told you when we last met at New Berne has proved true. And that you are now a deserter’s wife. I have enquired of a great many officers who know him and to some who are Bro. Masons & have stated circumstances omitting name & place and all agree in saying that you will probably never hear from him again. We may all be mistaken however I hope we are.â€

The Civil War saw quite a high desertion rate on both sides though many men eventually returned to their posts voluntarily or otherwise.

1 “A Specimen of the Impeachment of Witnesses†The Louisville Daily Journal April 15 1868. unknown

CIVIL WAR W. E. MERRILL
Map of Northern Georgia made under the Direction of Capt. W. E. Merrill
Chattanooga 1864. Lithographed folding map sectioned and linen-backed as issued. Original card covers printed paper label. In a modern folding morocco-backed box. A remarkable Union Army field map printed for Sherman's operations in Georgia.

A highly detailed map of the northern part of Georgia made under the direction of Capt. W. E. Merrill Chief Topographical Engineer of the Army of the Cumberland. The map shows all the major roads and rail lines in addition to natural topographical features in northern Georgia. The map extends as far north as Chattanooga near the Georgia/Tennessee state line and far enough south and east to include the northwest sixth of the state. The capture of Chattanooga in November 1863 gave the Union the foothold they needed to cut off supply lines and advance into the deep South. In the spring of 1864 the forces under Gen. William T. Sherman were poised to strike. As soon as Chattanooga was taken Sherman's chief topographical engineer Capt. William E. Merrill "the most innovative and conscientious exponent of mapping during the Civil War" began to compile a map of northwest Georgia. Merrill had his own complete establishment for map production -- a printing press lithographic presses and draughtsmen. Equally importantly Merrill's assistant Sgt. N. Finnegan developed an extraordinary body of intelligence drawing on spies prisoners refugees peddlars itinerant preachers and scouts what Merrill called "his motley crew". All of this information was digested by Merrill day by day until he was notified that the campaign would begin within the week. At this point the topographers finished their work and two hundred copies were produced mounted on linen for field use and distributed to field commanders down to the brigade level. In five months Merrill and his men had produced a remarkably accurate map of country that lay mostly behind enemy lines. The Merrill map was a critical aid to Sherman's campaigns in Georgia. Five days after the map was completed on May 7 Sherman's army left Chattanooga and began its hard-fought push to the southeast slowly driving the Confederates back to the railroad hub of Atlanta which is in the lower right quadrant of this map. In a campaign of continual attempts by both armies to outflank each other the understanding of the ground it would have brought the Union commanders was invaluable. Sherman took possession of Atlanta in September and used it as a base of operations for the next two and a half months while he raided in every direction all within the boundaries of this map. On November 15 the Federal forces burned the city cut loose from their rail communications with Chattanooga and began the famous March to the Sea heading east toward Savannah burning and pillaging everything in their path. About a week later they moved off the east edge of this map. An examination shows why this map would have been an invaluable aid to the Union commanders in the Georgia campaign. It details topography rivers existing roads and railroads towns and other features on a very small scale of four miles to the inch. Conveying the latest in Union military intelligence and combining new and existing information it would have guided Sherman and his officers through eight months of the hardest-fought campaigning of the entire Civil War. A triumph of coordinated intelligence and map-making it is one of the most remarkable cartographic productions of the Civil War. Indeed it might be called the "Holster Atlas" of the Georgia campaign.

Stephenson Civil War Maps in the Library of Congress S28-29; Miller Great Maps of the Civil War p.39. unknown

Broadside measuring approximately 24 inches by 31 inches handsomely framed. $4500.Handsome engraved broadside listing officers imprisoned at Libby Prison in Richmond “the most notorious prison after Andersonville” Boatner 482.""Libby Prison located in the Confederate capital of Richmond Virginia infamously housed Union soldiers officers and prisoners of war during the Civil War. Conditions were far below the normal standard of living. Overcrowding food shortages limited supplies and rampant disease plagued the prison. Commanders at the three-leveled complex designated less than a dozen rooms for inmates sometimes allotting hundreds of prisoners only a handful of cells measuring 40 by 100 feet"" BackStory. This broadside features a Union war eagle nestled in the Stars and Stripes; four separate cartouches of scenes from Libby Prison; engravings of four soldiers; the names of the northern states in an oval pattern interspersed with floral designs and the names of numerous battles; and in the center a list of Union officers at Libby headed by Brigadier Generals Neal Dow and E. P. Scammon. The Cincinnati firm of Ehrgott and Forbriger is noted for a series of over 70 broadsides it issued during the civil war that featured Union military and government figures. The top and bottom edges have been slightly shaved losing a bit of image from the top and bottom including the imprint which read ""designed and executed with a pen in Libby Prison"" by Captain Robert J. Fisher from the 17th Missouri Volunteers. Slight darkening in two bands across middle. A rare piece in excellent condition very handsomely framed. unknown
