ill., br. Nell'estate del 1940, dopo la sconfitta della Francia, solo l'Inghilterra, costretta a una disperata difesa, rimaneva in armi contro le forze dell'Asse. Le divisioni tedesche che avevano travolto l'esercito francese si erano minacciosamente concentrate lungo le coste della Manica in previsione dell'operazione "Leone Marino": lo sbarco in Inghilterra che nei piani di Hitler avrebbe dovuto porre fine alla guerra con la conquista dell'isola e il trionfo germanico. Il presupposto strategico dello sbarco, secondo l'Alto Comando tedesco, doveva essere l'annientamento delle forze della RAF. L'Alter Tag, il "Giorno dell'aquila", fu il segnale in codice che scatenò l'attacco della Luftwaffe contro gli aeroporti inglesi e segnò l'inizio della Battaglia d'Inghilterra, la più grande battaglia aerea della storia. Furono quelli i giorni in cui si decisero le sorti della Seconda guerra mondiale poiché centinaia di piloti inglesi, pur con sacrifici cruenti, riuscirono a respingere gli attacchi tedeschi e a infliggere ingenti perdite alle forze aree di Hitler. L'opera di Collier segue giorno per giorno le vicende della battaglia, illustrandone episodi e personaggi in una avvincente e drammatica rievocazione, basandosi su centinaia di testimonianze dirette e su un'accurata ricerca documentale.

It is about 118 years old on period thin paper. Caution is required when handling. . When properly unfolded this is a grand sized very large item. . 1. Front cover shows a full page photo of Vice-Admiral Togo 28 x 39.5 cm. the size of each single page. . 2. Inside the first page after above is drawing and half-page article: "THE COMPLETE READINESS" by Arthur May Knapp special Collier's correspondent on the scene. . 3. Full single page: "LEADING STATESMEN OF JAPAN" showing nine photographs of Japan's eminent statesmen and leading military officers with caption of their title name and rank. . 4. This is a double-page drawing by Graham. signed in the lower left corner by him and his printed name in the lower right corner. This sheet opens to be a grand size: ca. 56 x 39.5 cm. . This drawing shows a sketch map with Siberia at the top Manchuria below that the Liaotung Gulf Dalny Weihaiwei & Port Arthur the anchorage of the Russian fleet & the Korea Bay. . Seoul & Chemulpo was the location of the Japanese fleet. Essentially locking the Russian fleet in a cul-de-sac at Port Arthur. . All of Korea and Port Arthur are shown with the Russian fleet. . The Japanese islands are to the upper right and right side. . 5.Full single page article "THE THEATRE OF WAR: A description of the region illustrated in the map on the preceding pages" by Cyrus C. Adams. With center chart showing a statistical chart comparing the "Effective Naval Strength at the Opening of Hostilities.' Comparing naval vessels number of ships on station military strength area &population finance and table of distances. . 6. Following is a single page: "RUSSIAN WARSHIPS TORPEDOED AT PORT ARTHUR BY THE JAPANESE ON THE NIGHT OF FEB. 8 1904". This shows three great battle ships: "Ketvizan"Czarevitch" and the cruiser "Pallada." . 7. Per the advice and warning above this is the original publisher's issue of the Extra printed on very thin paper. There are a number of old mended tears the main one is in the center of the first page center following the center fold to the right. There are other minor repairs with Washi Japanese handmade mulberry fiber paper. There is a small bit of mend on the back side of this page over page 2 illustration in its lower left corner impact is minimal. . Other closed tears have also been restored mended and improved upon rendering the item more stable and easier to fold open. Please review photos posted to our website for a better view. . br. Nel maggio del 1800 la seconda discesa dell'esercito francese in Italia, guidato da Napoleone, chiude l'esperienza del governo austro-russo in Piemonte. Nel clima di una generale carestia, le condizioni di vita di gran parte della popolazione toccano un infimo livello: miseria e fame alimentano la rabbia della povera gente e generano un generale rifiuto dell'ideologia giacobina e la volontà di resistenza contro l'esercito invasore. Abusi commessi da più parti finiscono con il produrre forti dissensi anche in seno alla stessa comunità dei "patrioti". La situazione, di lì a pochi mesi, si fa incandescente: nel gennaio 1801 scoppia la grande rivolta degli Zoccoli - la seconda, dopo quella del maggio 1799 -, che nei suoi obiettivi ha soprattutto quello di una radicale opposizione ai "giacobini", considerati colpevoli di curare i propri interessi a danno dei poveri. Domata nel sangue dalle truppe francesi e dai volontari della guardia nazionale, la sollevazione lascia spazio a una scia di atti di brigantaggio (che è di natura politica, antifrancese e antirepubblicana), che resteranno endemici per molto tempo.

Philadelphia: King & Baird 1866. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 14pp. Very good. Bit of soiling to outer wrappers else tight and nice. Collis a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada 1832-71 to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behaving himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg but resigned before he could be tried. Whether the publication of Collis's pamphlet affected Cavada's Consul appointment we have not been able to determine. Most unusual. First edition. DORNBUSCH I P 275A. SABIN 14457.
