Committee on Gulf War and Health: Physiologic, Psychologic, and Psychosocial Effects of Deployment-Related Stress
Gulf War and Health; Volume 6 Physiologic Psychologic and Psychosocial Effects of Deployment-Related Stress
Washington DC: The National Academies Press 2008. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Very good. xviii 339 pages. Oversized book measuring 11-1/4 inches by 8-1/2 inches. Includes Acronyms Preface Summary Introduction Considerations in Identifying and Evaluating the Literature Deployment-Related Stressors The Stress Response Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Health Effects Phychosocial Effects Conclusions and Recommendations and Index. Also includes Tables Boxes and Figures and Acronyms. In this report the committee equated deployment-related stress with being deployed to a war zone although it recognized that not everyone deployed to a war zone would respond to stressors in the same way and that not everyone would necessarily find a particular event stressful. The reaction to deployment-related stressors would depend on numerous factors that were present before during and after deployment. The committee understood that stressors that people experienced in childhood their interactions with friends and family and whether they were wounded during deployment would all play a role in the nature of the response. The committee also understood that some military personnel would have minor reactions and transient health effects some would have severe reactions and more chronic health effects and some would go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder which could be associated with additional health effects. The sixth in a series of congressionally mandated reports on Gulf War veterans' health this volume evaluates the health effects associated with stress. Since the launch of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 there has been growing concern about the physical and psychological health of Gulf War and other veterans. In the late 1990s Congress responded by asking the National Academy of Sciences NAS to review and evaluate the scientific and medical literature regarding associations between illness and exposure to toxic agents environmental or wartime hazards and preventive medicines or vaccines in members of the armed forces who were exposed to such agents. Deployment to a war zone has a profound impact on the lives of troops and on their family members. There are a plethora of stressors associated with deployment including constant vigilance against unexpected attack difficulty distinguishing enemy combatants from civilians concerns about survival caring for the badly injured and witnessing the death of a person. Less traumatic but more pervasive stressors include anxiety about home life such as loss of a job and income impacts on relationships and absence from family. The focus of this report by the Institute of Medicine IOM Committee on Gulf War and Health: Physiologic and Psychosocial Effects of Deployment-Related Stress is the long-term effects of deployment-related stress. Gulf War and Health: Volume 6. Physiologic and Psychosocial Effects of Development Related Stress evaluates the scientific literature regarding association between deployment-related stressors and health effects and provides meaningful recommendations to remedy this problem. Committee on Public Information Division of Women's War Work
WWI Propaganda Archive of approximately 450 press releases from the Creel Committee also known as Committee on Public Information Division of Women's War Work
Washington D.C.: Committee on Public Information Division of Women's War Work 1918. Approximately 450 mostly mimeographed press releases spanning from February 1918 until July that same year many of which are 8.5" x 11" or 14" others of which are newspaper column-size 3" x 21" or varying lengths. Three groupings of the releases are claspbound the rest are loose. Includes Bulletins Nos. 1 & 2 both printed in January 1918 by the Government Printing Office folded in half vertically with reply card. Includes a TLS from Guy Stanton Ford Director of Civic and Educational Publications later President of the University of Minnesota to the President of Rice University. Very Good overall lightly toned with age a little chipped along edges folded horizontally two or three sheets torn in half.

A collection of pieces attempting to mobilize domestic support for the US in World War I issued by the women's division of the Creel Committee an independent agency in the Wilson administration. The Creel Committee attempted an unprecedented full court press of propaganda aiming to reach every stratum of American society. Many a budding public relations figure cut his teeth in the agency including Edward Bernays and Carl R. Byoir. The particular division from which all these pieces were issued focused on American women: variously promoting the work of journalist Ida Tarbell and the YWCA soliciting women to become Morse code telegraphers spreading anti-German and pro-Ally stories trying to get women of any number of religious denominations or ethnic groups to directly contribute to the war effort. This archive illuminates how American war propagandists saw women at the twilight of WWI. Specifically it reveals how civic participation technology military service and information theory were gendered in mass society-- or at least as observed and molded in that society by a particular body of elites. COMMUNIST-NATIONALIST CIVIL WAR IN CHINA
Jiao fei yi nian "One Year Spent Suppressing the Bandits".
Guizhou: Junqu zhengzhi bu 1951. Military might. and terror First edition first printing of this internally circulated report on operations undertaken in Guizhou province by the People's Liberation Army. After Chiang Kai-Shek evacuated to Taiwan in early 1949 remnants of his forces in the south-west splintered into different bandit units and mounted a credible threat to the survival of Mao's regime. Of the 1000 copies issued none are located in institutions. In January 1949 Chiang ordered Guizhou's nationalist governor Gu Zhenglun to make the province the final bastion of anti-communist resistance on the mainland. Although Mao proclaimed the founding of a united People's Republic of China in October "the continuing civil war in southwest China pitted ethnic groups local power holders farmers and Nationalist troops against the PLA People's Liberation Army. The occupying army's initial strategy of a rapid military advance leniency and massive grain collection efforts was a recipe for resistance" Brown p. 119. In early 1950 communist cadres and troops withdrew from the majority of the province the party's political control in tatters but a combination of carrot allowing local people to keep more of their agricultural surplus and stick terror eventually brought Guizhou into line. A series of maps demonstrates the oscillating fortunes of anti-communist forces during 1950 Mao's forces being pushed back during the summer months but gaining the decisive upper hand later in the year. Other plans show the grand troop manoeuvres that turned the tide in Beijing's favour. Tables at the end list major battles the names of guerilla organizations and their leaders those leaders killed or captured in the field and those who surrendered. While dated 1950 on the title page the volume was not printed until May 1951. Second and third printings followed in June and July. Octavo. Half-tone portrait photographs of Chairman Mao and Commander-in-Chief Zhu De tipped onto decoratively embossed leaves with tissue guards 5 photographic halftones all with tissue guards showing Liu Bocheng He Long Deng Xiaoping Li Da and Zhang Jichun 15 facsimile calligraphic inscriptions 36 colour maps and battle plans 26 double-page 9 colour bar charts tables in text. Text in Chinese. Original brown cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt illustrated endpapers green and pink silk bookmarker. Ex-military library with accession stamps on the front free endpaper and title page record card holder on the rear pastedown and "confidential" stamp on the title page; contemporary red pencil marginalia. Extremities rubbed and bumped couple of tips consolidated contents toned as consistent with paper from this period maps plans and graphs well preserved: a very good copy. Commynes Philippe de (Philippe de Commines), Lorenzo Conti
Rif. Bibl.: ICCU IT\ICCU\RMLE\005167; non citata in BM STC e non nell’Adams.
