[Ten printed Schedules of Contract for work for the service of the War Department, in the South-West and Sussex District; W H Du
War Department contractors 1858 10 printed items Schedule of Contract for Carpenters' Bricklayers'; Slaters'; Plasterers'; Plumbers'; Painters'; Glaziers'; Smiths'; Cast-iron and Metal Work for the Service of the War Department .
All ten schedules: 'London: Printed by Harrison & Sons. 1858.'. The collection is of great interest providing a mass of information regarding the Victorian building trade. The owner of the volume W. H. Dudley would appear to be a War Office official and as described at the end of this entry it contains manuscript details of two contracts. The ten printed schedules - totalling 34 17 14 10 12 13 12 10 16 11 = 149 pp. folio - are uniform in design and format bound together in a contemporary half-binding with brown leather spine and corners and marbled boards. All ten are in good condition on lightly-aged paper in worn binding. Inscription across front endpapers: 'W. H. Dudley. Contractors' Schedule. 1859. 59.' Each of the ten schedules is headed: 'N.B. - Tenders will be received at the War Office Pall Mall London on or before the blank The Secretary of State for War reserves to himself the right of rejecting the whole or any of the Tenders. No notice will be taken of any Tender unless upon the proper printed form.' Each begins with extensive 'Terms of Contract' followed by several pages of 'General regulations and specifications for the work.' These are followed by a detailed description of the specifics with the cost of 'Materials and Labour' under a number of headings. As an example in the case of plastering costings are given for 'Rendering' 'Lathing and plastering' 'Stucco' 'Cementing with half Roman cement and half sand' 'Rough casting on brick' 'Cornices and mouldings in plaster of Paris' 'Friezes and soffits; Cornices and mouldings in roman cement' 'Lime white and whitewashing' 'Colouring including size' 'Sundries' and 'Day work and materials'. The recto of a flyleaf preceding the first schedule is filled with two manuscript notes in a contemporary hand. The top half of the page is headed 'Mr. Robert Stratton Contractor for the Isle of Wight under contract dated 13 April 1858 Portsmouth 1 121' and lists the percentage under the prices printed in the schedule' of eleven contracts from 'Bricklayer' to 'Plasterer'. The lower part of the page is headed: 'George Wheeler Contractor for Hurst Castle - under contract dated 15 April 1858 Portsmouth 1 126' and listing eleven contracts again from 'Bricklayer' to 'Plasterer' again with percentages of four 'under' and seven 'at Schedule Prices'. Excessively scarce: no copy of any of the ten items on COPAC or in the National Archives. All ten schedules: 'London: Printed by Harrison & Sons. 1858.' hardcover

[Fine Binding] [Spanish American War] Latimer, Elizabeth Wormeley
Spain in the Nineteenth Century
Chicago: A.C. McClurg and Company 1897. First edition. 8vo 442pp. Illustrated with 23 plates. Pages unopened. Finely bound in full brown crushed morocco elaborately gilt decorated borders with red accents and gilt dentelles with the Spanish royal coat-of-arms in gilt and red on both covers t.e.g. Rubbed along upper joint else a near fine copy. Bookplate of A.J. Cox to front pastedown.

Really a nicely executed and elaborate binding of this text which relates some of the events leading up to the Spanish American War of 1898. Alfred J. Cox was a Chicago master book binder and collector and we would guess this book from a Chicago publisher was perhaps bound by Cox himself. It is listed in Catalogue of the Sumptuous 'Attic' Library of the late Alfred J.Cox which was sold at auction by the American Art Association in New York 1918. This title along with several others from the series by Latimer are listed as bound in full levant morocco in various colors #608. A nice example of American fine binding at the turn of the century. [World War I]; [Navy]; [Prayer Books]; [Hymnals]; [Military]
A Prayer Book for the Public and Private Use of our Soldiers and Sailors; With Bible Readings and Hymns
Philadelphia: Bishop White Prayer Book Society 1917. Hardcover. Near Very Good. 16mo. 29 cm x 21 cm. 2 3-192 pp. Blue publisher's cloth with a red border on each board red lettering on the front board flexible boards. There is a pocket on the rear board but nothing is in the pocket. Immediately after the title page the book states the motives and objects of the First World war: "We are glad to fight for the ultimate peace of the world and for the liberation of its peoples the German peoples included; for the rights of nations great and small and the privilege of men everywhere to choose their way of life and obedience . ". It is an excerpt from President Wilson's statement on the United States entering the First World War. An inscription on the free front endpaper reads: "Willis Winfried/Winfreed 506 S. Neil The next line is illegible Illinois 1917 - U.S.A. Great Lakes Illinois". The owner of this prayer book was either trembling while writing his inscription or his ink was exposed to moisture though the paper itself has no dampstain. This book clearly traveled with the naval recruit to Great Lakes the naval training station just north of Chicago. Although we cannot identify exactly who the owner was the item is significant as it is a record of what kind of item was important enough to a Navyman to transport to a war zone based on the book's significant wear and use we believe it traveled to the European theatre after the recruit completed his training at Great Lakes. Significant rubbing to the cloth rear gutter is cracked but the binding is holding. Bishop White Prayer Book Society hardcover

[Newspapers]; [Wisconsin]; [US Civil War]; [Elections]; [Anti-Lincoln] U S
The Wisconsin Daily Patriot
Madison Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Daily Patriot / Daily Patriot Printing House 1864. Newspaper. Very Good. Bifolium. 55 cm. x 40 cm. Newspaper printed in black. Text divided into six columns. Price of 15 cents in the first column of text. With a few small illustrations. The Wisconsin Daily Patriot began printing in 1853 and was a daily newspaper dedicating to the promotion of the Democratic Party and the idea that the country could not prosper unless it was under the leadership of politicians from the Democratic Party. This issue contains a prospectus of the editorial board's opinion on the 1864 election and has a long essay that heavily criticizes Lincoln. The writer argues that Lincoln is not the person to put down the rebellion and that he used the issue of American slavery as a tool to divide the country and seek his own power. The writer also makes clear that he believes that inequality between white and Black people was "mandated by God". The paper also contains what was then recent news of the Confederate Army's attack of Fort Stevens and of General Franklin's capture by the Confederates. It gives several eye-witness accounts of battle action. Finally the newspaper also contains plenty of advertisements for local Madison businesses including clothiers exterminators surgeons printing houses druggists and other shops. The newspaper is a clear account of northern prejudice anti-Lincoln sentiment and shows a fervent Democrat's perspective on the U.S. Civil War. Two faint dampspots and two folds to the paper.
