‎(Masonry) (Civil War) Jewell, Jacob, author‎

‎Heroic Deeds of Noble Master Masons During the Civil War From 1861 to 1865 in the U.S.A.‎

‎Pueblo CO: The Franklin Press. 1916. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. This volume written by Jewella Civil War soldier had started the process of becoming a Mason but was interrupted two weeks later by joining the Union army in 1862. After serving in the winter of 1865/66 he became Master Mason. The book contains the stories of soldiers who when captured by the Confederates or the Federal Army once they were known to be a Mason were treated as brothers and well cared for. Cleary Jewell had solicited these stories as they are mostly signed by the former soldier/Mason who experienced these considerations. The book also contains a brief autobiography of Jewell as well as some thoughts on Masonry war and related subjects. The Masonry scholar Michael A Halleran wrote in the journal "Heredom" suggesting the Masonry affiliation aided prisoners on both sides of the conflict. Jewell's book is considered one of the earliest works addressing the Freemasonry's role in the Civil War though Halleran does criticize it for being "anecdotal." See volume 15 2007 of "Heredom." The book is near fine with a few small spots on the front board. Extremely scarce.; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 127 pp . The Franklin Press hardcover‎

‎[Tsingtao [Qingdao] during the Second Sino-Japanese War, 1937-1945)] Malcolm H Young, English agent at Tsingtao [Quingdao], Chin‎

‎Tsingtao Qingdao during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. Ten long Autograph Letters Signed from Malcolm H. Young English agent to his sister Celia describing conditions during Japanese occupation.‎

‎Three from 1937 18 January 28 November and 10 December; seven from 1938 13 20 and 27 February 6 March 7 April 6 May and 13 November. All addressed from ‘P.O. Box 286. Tsingtao. China / via Siberia’. A good well-written correspondence painting a good picture of the day-to-day life of an English expatriate in the occupied city. Letters are signed ‘Malcolm’ and once ‘Mac’. Young names himself in valedictions as Celia’s brother. He does not sign with his surname which can however be deduced from the combination of postscripts signed ‘M H Y’; and Celia being named in the endorsement to one letter as ‘C. G. Young’. He is is presumably ‘Malcolm H. Young agent’ who features in the Tsingtao / Hong Kong List for 1941. Several references indicate a conventionally Christian religiosity and some connection with a church for English expatriates in the city. Ten long letters. Three from 1937 18 January 28 November and 10 December; seven from 1938 13 20 and 27 February 6 March 7 April 6 May and 13 November. A total of 30pp 4to neatly and closely written. A little aged and worn but in good overall condition. Two of the letters are incomplete; that of 10 December 1937 only consists of the first page; that of 13 November 1938 lacks the fourth page of five. The correspondence contains a deal of personal matter but the extracts that follow concentrate on the political situation on the ground. Letter One 18 January 1937 puts us straight in the action: ‘I think I last wrote to you on Sunday before last just before the Japanese came in. This took place on the Monday without incident or conflict of any kind - no one killed or injured & no shot fired. It was a tense time however all the forenoon as it was not known what would happen. From early morning Airplanes were flying all over quite low & making an noise. It was alarming but they were only making quite sure that there were no soldiers here. They dropped a few bombs in the outskirts to frighten people - & where they thought there might be soldiers - but no harm was done. / It was a day of deliverance & thankfulness when in the afternoon they marched in quietly & took possession.’ He refers to ‘many unpleasantnesses’ as ‘a new City Govt: is inaugurated - this took place yesterday just a week after the troops came in - we are glad to have the war cloud removed - that is we hope it will be - Shops have been kept close shut & the poor Chinese much frightened by their rough treatment & seizure of houses goods & people. However they also gave employment to many coolies. Even the houses of Foreigners were not exempt from intrusion but on the whole as invading armies go they have not been too bad.’ This brings us to the end of the first of the thirty pages of text. He continues the first letter with more news of the state of affairs including: ‘We had a lot of the soldiers encamped just below here in empty summer bungalows some of whom were a nuisance & our servants were alarmed; - they even intruded on ours and our neighbours premises but did no harm: and on our complaining to the Consel who took prompt action with the Japanese Military Head Quarters were soon checked. This crowd has moved on elsewhere now & I hope we shall have no more.’ He reports that ‘The Censors . are at work here in the P.O. making delay in delivery of mails’. In the second letter November 28 1937 he reports: ‘The Japanese are advancing in the N. of the province but rather hesitantly - I suppose negotiations are going on. They have huge commercial interests in Shantung - especially at Tringtao which it is to their interest to preserve. The Chinese may be using these to bargain with the enemy at our gates. It is hard to know what is happening. Meanwhile Shai is suffering terrible aftermath of war with its hungry crowds of refugees poorly clad & with sickness among them; & still the Japanese advance & Nanking is threatened is threatened.’ He has every sympathy for ‘the Chinese who have fought so bravely’ but believes it is time to make peace ‘since they cannot hope to win in the unequal struggle. Japan’s better trained & equipped armies carrying all before them. Locally the tension increases & the price of food & coal increases. The railway being if not actually interrupted so denuded of cars removed South by the Govt. that no coal trains can come from the mines.’ On 13 February 1938 he reports on ‘Work on clearing the port - blocked by departing Chinese troops with sunken ships & other obstructions - . while the demolition of buildings - destroyed by the Chinese - is progressing preparatory to re-building later. Whatever happens the Japanese are going to keep Tsingtao so the only thing is to make the best of things & as far as possible work with them - this for Chinese & Foreigners alike . I fear that the Chinese will be afraid to open up their shops much. The Japanese are opening & numbers of them returning by every steamer from Japan & Dairen. Commodities too are showing cheaper prices. Water is very short but work is in hand for repairs & they say that after 10 days there will be improvement.’ On 6 March 1938: ‘As you surmise it is still far from plain sailing both for ourselves and the original inhabitants of these regions the Chinese. The power & authority of the new masters is everywhere felt and we as well as the Chinese have to mind our Ps & Qs with them. The name and authority of the Occidental powers is not what it was - & they like to let us know it. . The Railway is not yet working fully & the harbour is still closed’. On 6 May 1938 he bemoans ‘the present disturbed state of the country which alas shows no signs of improvement. - But what would you - if the incomers win peace & order follow but naturally the people of the land oppose them in all ways with resulting chaos & danger to all. It is very sad. & fighting with heavy losses on both sides continues. . all along the Railways we are told villages on both sides have been burned down. Business of all kinds is very little except among the Japanese who appear to be very busy & are re-building their factories & doing other business - giving employment it is true to some workmen but as they are self-sufficient & very efficient they have no use for Foreign help. Chinese with money have largely departed elsehwere & those remaining will not do anything this year. - The new regime have installed a very good & quick Bus service which gives rapid & convenient transportation to & fro town’. In the last letter 13 November 1938 he complains that ‘The days are short now & “Tokyo†time is tiresome but we adjust things to some extent by altering times. For instance Early Service Holy Communion is put at 8.30 instead of 8 which helps. We were glad to be there this morning & the church room was warmed by a welcome stove fire The first time it has been required this season. There were not so many present . On Friday 11th. we went out to the British. Cemetery here at the Cenotaph the usual memorial service was held. It as a bitter day. A detachment from H.M.S. “Folkestone†now in port were present many of the men being war veterans. There were also of course the United States Service Association members with their medals.’ Three from 1937 (18 January, 28 November and 10 December); seven from 1938 (13, 20 and 27 February, 6 March, 7 April, 6 May and unknown‎

‎Sir Robert Mends (1767?-1823), distinguished Royal Navy officer in American War of Independence and Peninsular War [Charles Stua‎

‎‘I make no doubt will succeed in a very extensive degree’: Sir Robert Mends distinguished Royal Navy officer. Long Autograph Letter Signed to the British Envoy at Lisbon Charles Stuart describing his Portuguese situation during the Peninsular War‎

‎‘His Majesty’s Ship Arethusa / Corunna 18th. August 1810’. See his entry and that of Stuart in the Oxford DNB. 3pp 4to. On bifolium. Sixty-six lines of neatly-written text signed ‘R Mends’ and addressed ‘To / The Honble Chas. Stuart / His Majestys Envoy / Lisbon’. A vivid and substantial historical document. Of his activities around this time the Oxford DNB writes: ‘In the summer of 1810 in command of a squadron on the coast of Spain Mends destroyed several French batteries for which service in addition to a formal letter of thanks from the junta of Galicia he received the order of the Cross of Victory of the Asturias and the nominal rank of major-general of the Spanish army.’ He begins by osberving that the ‘Correspondence with Biscay has been kept so profoundly abstracted’ from his knowledge that he really knows ‘nothing of the matter beyond having directed every Ship on the Station to attend to it in preference to every other object. ie to receive on board any Agent who might present himself as so employ’d’. He continues with reference to ‘the mode of carrying on this correspondence’ ‘the Deputy Commissary Mr. White’ ‘Arana’ ‘the Blockaded Ports’ ‘the Nimrod cutter’ ‘the House of Mr. Dickinson’ ‘Don Raymond de Castro the late Captain General of Galicia’ ‘the Ifegena’ ‘Santona’ ‘General Renovales’. He concludes: ‘I am now getting under weigh for Bermio sic with a large Quantity of Ammunition on board for Biscay & Navarra and shall immediately return here to conduct the Expedition which I make no doubt will succeed in a very extensive degree - God grant that we may receive such accounts from your side of the Country as we hope soon to send from this’. ‘His Majesty’s Ship Arethusa / Corunna 18th. August 1810’. unknown‎

‎Sir Nevil Macready [Cecil Frederick Nevil Macready] (1862-1946), First World War general and last British military commander in‎

‎16 Autograph Letters Signed and 2 Autograph Cards Signed to William Toynbee editor of the diaries of his father William Charles Macready.‎

‎None with year although one item with 1911 postmark and others certainly from between 1913 and 1924. From England and France including the Garrick Club and Author’s Club in London and hotels in Manchester and St Cyr-sur-Mer. Macready's entry in the Oxford DNB states that he destroyed his diary and personal papers after the publication of his memoirs in 1924 and that of his father notes that he dealt with William Charles Macready's ‘copious and uninhibited diaries’ in similar fashion in 1914 - two years after the appearance of Toynbee’s edition. The present collection of eighteen items is in good condition lightly aged and folded for postage. All signed 'C F N Macready' and addressed to 'My dear Toynbee'. The text of the letters totals 35pp compising 1p 8vo; 25pp 12mo; 9pp 16mo. No dates are given but a card from the Victoria Hotel Manchester is in its envelope postmarked 6 July 1911 and addressed to ‘W. Toynbee Esq / 30. South Eaton Place / London S.W.’ In it Macready complains that he has been ‘bundled off here to stop the strikers at two hours untill sic last night’. In November of 1910 according to the Oxford DNB he had been ‘sent to command troops in support of police dealing with possible disorders arising from a miners’ strike’. The three longest and most interesting letters from 16 22 and 28 November 1924 with the letterhead of the Grand Hotel des Lecques Plage des Lecques St Cyr-sur-Mer all refer to the recent publication of his autobiography. In the first he writes that ‘The agents say it is well turned out. Personally I think the price to high for a big sale but that of course is Hutchinson’s the publisher affair.’ He was ‘rather amused at the review in Times of 14th. The writer I should say is rather more of a purely litterary sic stamp than of military habits.’ As ‘the galley proofs are destroyed’ he asks Toynbee’s advice on the charge of £14 from ‘King Hall & Arbuthnot’ ‘for the alterations you & I made apart from printers’ errors’. He complains that his hotel has been invaded by a ‘party of Americans’ and comments on his recent reading: ‘He mauls Randolph Churchill badly & legitimacy in royal & upper circles seems rather the exception than the rule!’ In the second of the three he comments on reviews and complains of printers’ errors. ‘Your praise of the work is very gratifying as from “one who knows†& you have made a friend for life of the lady who slaved at the typing who I always tell her is prejudiced.’ There is reference to a wed. ding at St Maur and ‘Letty’ and there are further complaints about Americans at the hotel. He concludes with reference to a London scandal known as the ‘Robinson Cheque Case’: ‘That Robinson case is pretty lurid - I presume the potentate is the Shah of Persia - It should make a good plot for the next Empire Review. Lady Diana Duff Cooper Manners in the role of Mrs. Robinson and Angela Forbes as Mrs. Bevan!’ He returns to the scandal in the third letter: ‘I am wondering if the “Rajah†in the Robinson case could be Rhanjitsinghi - the cricketer. It looked at first rather like the Shah. No doubt he followed the practices of “the cities of the plainâ€. Elsewhere in the letter he expresses satisfaction with Hutchinson’s advertising and the reviews he is receiving: ‘I am having all the Press notices suck in my m.ss. books’. Regarding the printing costs ‘Arbuthnot wrote me that he had received your note & was fighting H. whom he had got the better of on a former occasion for an extortionate charge.’ Regarding ‘Dougherty’s effusion yesterday’ he writes: ‘No I am quite sure I had not confused him with anyone else - I can see him before me now “screaming†& waving his arms. My difficulty is that I am away from all my notes especially the Royal Commission. proceedings on the Howth incident which I had written for.’ In an earlier letter evidently written after the 1912 publication of his father’s diaries he refers to a ‘Miss Hogarth’ who ‘mentions one slip probably the result of the handwriting in the diaries’. In another letter with a reference to the recent death of the actor Laurence Irving which dates it to 1914 Macready announces his return to London from Ireland ‘for how long - only Providence & the Cabinet know! & I doubt they do. I am fairly tired of it all & the impossibility of seeing a yard ahead. . I was quite shaken by the news of poor Laurence Irving’s death - a very great loss to the stage.’ Just before Christmas of 1913 he expresses a fear of ‘what - politically - 1914 may bring us so let us hope we may find compensation in our private lives!’ In the same letter he suggests that the Marquis Cornwallis’s correspondence ‘throws a shadow before on what may happen though I still maintain that means will be found to prick the bladder & let the noxious gas out before an explosion occurs’. A letter of 7 October 1923 begins with a reference to his autobiography: ‘Here I am having done the last paged proof & handed in the Index wh. Hutchinson the book’s publisher is screaming for. Directly I get the proof of it I will send you a wire in case you may be able to run up & have a look at it. It has been a Tough job but I think it pretty full though I had absolutely refused to check the pages again. Someone else can do that!’ He concludes with the query: ‘I wonder who the next lot of political place warmers will be There is not much change between any of them.’ On 8 March 1927 he thanks Toynbee for the gift of his book ‘Phases of the Thirties’. None with year, although one item with 1911 postmark, and others certainly from between 1913 and 1924. From England and France, unknown‎

‎‘I knew the lady well’: General Sir Nevil Macready on Millicent Duchess of Sutherland her field hospital and marital misadventures. Autograph Letter Signed to William Toynbee editor of the diaries of his father actor William Charles Macready.‎

‎28 August no year. On embossed letterhead of Les Sapins Boulevard Thiers Fontainebleau S & M’. Macready’s entry in the Oxford DNB states that he destroyed his diary and personal papers after the publication of his memoirs in 1924. If the present gossipy specimen is anything to go by the loss of this material is most regrettable. The ODNB entry for his father notes that he dealt with William Charles Macready's ‘copious and uninhibited diaries’ in similar fashion in 1914 - two years after the appearance of Toynbee’s edition. See also the entry for Millicent Duchess of Sutherland 1867-1955. 2pp 4to. In good condition lightly aged and folded for postage. Signed 'C F N Macready' and addressed to 'My dear Toynbee'. He begins by explaining that he has been confined to his room since ‘a sharp attack of Bronchial Influenza’: ‘The bore of it is that it touches up the lungs & that entails care for some weeks.’ Turning to the English papers he writes: ‘I see by this mornings Daily Mail that Almeric Fitzroy has apparently disturbed the Empire with his book!’ Fitzroy’s memoirs were published in 1925 and quickly went through a further five editions. There follows a long assessment of Millicent Duchess of Sutherland and her three marriages she had divorced the third Col. George Ernest Hawes as a result of his homosexuality earlier in the year prompted by her book ‘That Fool of a Woman and four other Sombre Tales’ 1925 which according to the Oxford DNB revealed ‘much about her marital misadventures’. ‘I saw a notice of Millicent Sutherland’s book but that is all. I knew the lady well. She has traces of great beauty and during the War ran a hospital first at La Panne for the Belges & later as an annexe to one of our hospitals at Calais. She tried to work old Johnnie French to let her & her nurses roam about the battle front and I was called in to anchor her which I did effectually at Calais. Her husband the Duke was much older than her & in love with his library & it is well known that she “kept†the FitzGerald man & gave him a good allowance. No one could understand why she married him on the Duke’s death as he drank like a fish & was a notorious waster. Having divorced him it was equally incomprehensible why she married Hawes. Of course her stock - the Rosslyn - is queer & may account for much! I don’t know Hawes but did hear that he had a tendency towards the Dead Sea fruits.’ He ends by asking Toynbee’s opinion of Sinclair Lewis and by explaining that ‘this grippe of mine will delay my trip to London for a bit. If we get a St. Martin’s summer I may venture’. 28 August [no year]. On embossed letterhead of Les Sapins, Boulevard Thiers, Fontainebleau S & M’. unknown‎

He is writing to her after having ‘applied to my friend Miss Wauchope of Niddrie on the same subject’. 15 March 1830; 6 Royal Circus, Edinburgh. unknown‎

‎Breendonk: Amicale des Postiers Prisonniers Politiques Rescapés 1945. Original broadside pictorial diploma 24.5x32cm. printed lithograph on cream stock in red gilt and black accomplished in manuscript and rubberstamp. Minor foxing else a fresh Fine example. Exceedingly uncommon diploma awarded to a survivor of the Nazi prison camp at Fort Breendonk outside Antwerp. The camp generally held political prisoners members of the Resistance and Jews who were almost all subsequently dispersed to the larger concentration camp across Eastern Europe. More than 3000 prisoners passed through Breendonk of whom approximately ten percent died or were executed within its walls while half perished following deportation to other camps. The present certificate awarded to a member of the French resistance a mechanic outside Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire department of Western France his arrest part of a massive purge following the assassination of a Dr. Ritter representative of Gauleiter Sauckel in France see Colonel Remy "La Résistance en Anjou Touraine et Orléanais" 1975 Vol. 1 p. 103. The entire town of Saumur was later awarded the Croix de Guerre for its role in the resistance.

Certificate margins adorned with poignant vignettes of camp life men in striped uniforms awaiting execution working in the mines or caught in barbed wire fence. In the case of Huberdeau his first name here spelled "Villiam" he was awarded this diploma for "sa déportation dans le bagnes nazis" "his deportation to the nazi camps". Though no mention is explicitly made to Breendonk it appears that the award was given to survivors of that camp specifically.
