Woman's Handwritten Civil War Era Letters
Westhampton likely Massachusetts 1861-1864. Ephemera. Fine. Group of 13 manuscript letters black ink in tidy cursive addressed to "Hattie" who is perhaps in Springfield. Most are signed "Mother" one the last and only letter in pencil is signed "Sister Anna" and all are dated 22 April 1861 - "Sabbath Eve" May 1864 and located in Westhampton. A few are somewhat faint but still legible -- otherwise condition is fine. <br/><br/>An interesting group of letters quintessential for their reports on the health of seemingly everyone in town and for their concern with the American Civil War. "I am taking a great interest in war matters feel curious to read the daily paper think the North will come off conquered and I hope without shedding Oceans of blood" she remarks in the earliest letter in the group. Some remarks from later letters include: "We heard that Bolton and Alvin Clark were sick at Annapolis and that Henry Smith is a prisoner at Richmond. Mother England blusters about terribly doesn't she Hope she isn't going to declare war against us."; "Our people have had no letters since the battle are expecting some daily. Edward Coyt of Huntington was one of the wounded. After the battle of Roanoke he wrote to his folks he'd seen enough of war."; "Our men A. P. Bridgman Davis Burt Bartholt Bissell Edward Delany Charles Land Henry Sulliver a fellow living at Capt Custs and an Irishman. So you see we send seven married men."; "Frank Hule was killed in the battle at Murfeesboro Dec 31st by the first fire of the Rebs"; plus a few more comments and names. <p>Newspaper folded six columns 8 pp. Mostly uncut a few splits chips and tears at folds a couple of small pieces are missing from center column that goes through paper and results in some loss of text throughout creasing some foxing or darkening name stamp in top margin paper somewhat fragile and is folded. Overall condition fair or better for newsprint. This issue includes substantial Civil War coverage. Most of the front page is dedicated to the war including coverage of the Battle of Cedar Creek the war in Missouri the war in Tennessee and information about General Sherman's activities. An article "From the South" provides some additional war coverage on a subsequent page.</p>

Civil War Manuscript Orders from Commodore Charles Wilkes West India Squadron aboard USS Wachusett off Bermuda October 2 1862 to Commander T. H. Stevens of the USS Sonoma ALS - Autograph Letter Signed
USS Wachusett off Bermuda 1862. Single sheet folio. Near Fine. Single sheet measuring 15.75 x 12.5 inches folded to four pages. Dark brown ink on cream wove paper. Wilkes orders on first leaf recto and verso signed "Charles Wilkes/Rear Admiral/Comdr. West Indian Squadron". With clerical handwriting on second leaf verso "Order of October 2nd 1862." Document had been folded thrice horizontally as if to fit in a narrow envelope. Those creases now mellowed. Creases lightly toned and with a one-inch closed tear along center fold else Fine. On 8 September 1862 Wilkes was selected to command a "flying" squadron of seven ships to search for Confederate commerce raiders in the West Indies most particularly the Alabama and the Florida. In these orders Wilkes refers Stevens of the USS Sonoma to previously issued orders as they hunt off Bermuda adding that Stevens take care to avoid infringing the Queen's Proclamation regarding respect of Colonial Territorial waters to keep friendly his intercourse with US Consul Allen and hoping he will suffer nothing to escape him going in or out. And finally to allow Rodgers of the USS Tioga to read and copy these orders. Evidence of the calm cultivated side of "Stormy Petrel" Wilkes written in a graceful hand. Preserved in a clear archival sleeve with acid-free backing. unknown

Bound in is a diploma for a driver/agent: Diplome Occupation Des Frontieres Suisse Schweizerische Grenzbesetzung 1914 1915 1916 which is signed and stamped in ink; evidently a certificate for use as border patrol service during WWI. Half cloth binding with paper-covered boards which are stamped and feature a mounted color printed emblem. In sum an elaborate memento of Swiss neutrality during WWI emphasizing rightfully so Switzerland's celebrated independence. The photos especially well executed depict border crossings sometimes bucolic sometimes mountainous and the various vehicles used by agents to navigate those difficult roads. Interesting piece of contempoary populism. Strapline beneath name of newspaper reads 'POOR JAMESON! THE LAUREATE SINGS FOR HIM NOW!' This refers to a piece on page 3 a piece headed ' "JAMESON'S RAID." The "Star" Laureate's Paraphrase of Mr. Alfred Austin's Poem "Jameson's Ride" in To-day's "Times." ' The paper contains several other items relating to Jameson e.g. 'THE RAID. MR. HOFMEYR DEMANDS A SERCHING INQUIRY. A PLAIN HINT THAT MR. RHODES MUST GO!' 'A HITCH. Folded for self-mailing and addressed on the verso of the second leaf to 'Mr: F Huth 1 South Street Finsbury Square'. This page which has 'URGENT; - On Warehousing System' printed on it also carries two oval postmarks one of which in black ink reads 'TwoPyPost. Unpaid Lombard St'. Docketed '1814 M. L. P. Merac London 9 March'. The petition takes up the whole of the recto of the first leaf with a 'CIRCULAR' from Merac describing it as 'the annexed suggestion of a PETITION to be signed by the MERCHANTS and SHIP OWNERS of this Port generally' on the recto of the second. Book has a dark green cloth cover with an embossed eagle in the center of the front cover and a gold embossed eagle and lettering on the spine which reads "BY AUTHORITY OF THE WAR DEPARTMENT MAY 1861 U.S. INFANTRY & RIFLE TACTICS". The cloth cover is worn on the corners and spine and some surface dirt is present. Pages have yellowed with age but binding is tight and none are loose or missing. Book measures 5 3/8" x 3 ¾" x 1 ¼". Text contains 450 pages and then is followed by several pages of military ads.This book was published by several different publishers printers throughout the war and were issued to officers of the various state regiments for the training of their men.The book is in good good condition green cloth boards have some staining. The back has a small rip. Pages are good with slight tanning from age. one of the foldout has been torn and part is missing. Nice copy of a book that would have gone to the field with the officers in charge.
