[World War II]
LETTERS OF A U.S. NAVY LIEUTENANT DEPLOYED IN THE PACIFIC THEATER
Small group of letters written by U.S. Navy Lieutenant Orville Hockett "Bud" Read 1910-91 to his wife Ruth LeMay "Mimi" Read nee DeVault 1917-2002 during his deployment in the waning months of World War II and the early postwar period. His detailed letters describe conditions in Japan a soldier who went AWOL transporting military personnel and his opinion of the war.<br /> <br /> Read served on the SS Jean LaFitte a Sumter-class attack transport ship. He wrote that it could carry as many as 1800 people packed in tightly.<br /> <br /> Writing from an undisclosed location on January 17 1945 Read describes a brief excursion to a warehouse where his ship is docked: "In it there are tons and tons of Chinese coins which the Japs confiscated and hauled over here. I am getting 3 different sizes and enough to make a set of poker chips. It's the first time I ever walked around in money piled knee-deep. None of it of course is any good anymore but it looks impressive."<br /> <br /> "We just got back from a brief jeep ride having gotten the troops off the ship about 10:30 pm" he wrote on November 2 1945 "Couldn't see too much because it was dark but there was no question about the town being a total wreck. There were a lot of very fine buildings here but they are in ruins - most of it demolition work by the Japs when they found they were whipped."<br /> <br /> The collection includes twelve handwritten and typed letters during his naval tour and three postwar letters written from Cuba where he was traveling on business. All are in their original mailing envelopes and in very good condition. unknown

(JO DAVIESS COUNTY -- WORLD WAR ONE)
Jo Daviess County Honor Roll: An Illustrated Historical Biography Compiled from Private Authentic Records
Galena IL: M.J. & A.J. Weber n.y. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt front board lettering. 224pp 93pp ads. Numerous illustrations advertisements green decorative endpapers. Very good. Mildly edgeworn only. Tight and attractive probable sole edition of this memorial yearbook of World War I veterans from Jo Daviess county in northwestern Illinois. Of special interest is a sharp WW1-era real photo postcard tipped to front flyleaf showing an unidentified young man in suit and overcoat and distinctive checkered cap standing in the snow -- and on page 189 the very same young man in the same outfit stands in a large group photo captioned "Jo Daviess County Boys Who Departed For Camp Grant February 27 1918." Unique copy of a volume exceptionally difficult to find in acceptable condition -- scotch-taped hinges and duck-taped spine are the norm. This is a scarce clean tight-hinged copy with intriguing addition from the period. M.J. & A.J. Weber hardcover

POTTER, John
Reminiscences of the Civil War in the United States
Oskaloosa IA: The Globe Presses 1897. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Pebble-grained blind-ruled black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 196pp. Frontispiece. Very good. Tight clean attractive first edition of this slim war memoir by this soldier with the 101st Illinois Volunteers in later years a pastor with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Iowa. Title continues: "Including Also an Account of a Visit to the Battle Grounds of Tennessee and Georgia in 1895 and a Memorial Sermon Preached at Montezuma Iowa May 26th 1895." Scarce especially in this nice condition. James I. Robertson Jr. offers a critique typical of that of many a small-time war participant: "Potter had a penchant for describing in detail small isolated incidents which he beheld; his memoir as a whole is a disappointment." SCOFIELD, Levi T (1842-1917)
Partly-Printed Autograph Document Signed
This noted architect and sculptor of Cleveland Ohio -- the first Cleveland architect to join the American Institute of Architects -- built many important public buildings and monuments in that city; he served with the 103rd Regiment Ohio Volunteers and authored the 1909 study of the Franklin campaign "The Retreat from Pulaski to Nashville Tennessee." Partly-printed ADS 1p 17" X 11" n.p. 1863 December 1. Near fine. Form for obtaining payment for servants filled out and signed by Scofield who adds rank and title "1st Lieut. & Act. Topographical Engineer / 3d. Division 23d. A.C." He checks various columns to claim one months' pay and subsistence for his servant "John" whose complexion eyes and hair he all notes as "Black." He also notes payment coming from U.S. Army Paymaster John Coon -- his uncle by the way -- and Coon also signs. One of Scofield's most notable monuments is his Civil War monument "These Are My Jewels" -- a document from the 21-year-old future architect from his Civil War period is extremely unusual and desireable. unknown

CHETLAIN, Augustus L
Recollections of Seventy Years
Galena: The Gazette Publishing Company 1899. Hardcover. 8vo. Original green blind-embossed cloth gilt. 304pp. Frontispiece decorative endpapers. Errata slip tipped in. Very good. Mild bit of faint edgewear; single missing leaf pp. 15-16 provided with expert modern facsimile on period paper. Tight and handsome first edition of this quite scarce memoir by one of Galena Illinois' famed nine generals U.S. Grant among them which William E. Parrish describes: "Although the great bulk of these memoirs recounts Chetlain's experiences as a soldier the book also contains many insights of wartime Galena Ill." Chetlain 1824-1914 was supposedly the first Illinoisan to volunteer in the Civil War and formed a regiment with his friend Grant; he participated in a number of major battles and rose to the rank of brevet brigadier general; after the war he entered banking in Chicago serving as director of the Chicago Stock Exchange. Discreet ex-library the only markings being a small blind-embossing on the title page and on the front pastedown the tasteful bookplate of Chetlain's hometown library: Galena Illinois. Even better this copy was given the library in 1961 by the Hughlett family. Samuel Hughlett 1808-64 was an early Galena settler who owned smelting furnaces on a branch of the Galena River now named the Hughlett Branch; he inherited many slaves from his father's Kentucky plantation but brought them to Galena and manumitted them. Hughlett is mentioned a number of times in this volume. A sharp copy of this scarce title with a choice local connection. FLAKE 1264. NEVINS II 145. The Gazette Publishing Company hardcover
