[Newspaper, Hospital] [Civil War]
The Hammond Gazette March 30 1864. Vol. 2 No. 20.

A nice example of a very uncommon newspaper printed weekly for the staff and patients of Hammond General or Point Lookout Hospital during 1863 and 1864. This Hospital for Union troops was constructed at the location of a summer resort on an isolated peninsula extending into Chesapeake Bay. After the Battle of Gettysburg during which a large number of Confederate troops were captured Point Lookout also quickly became the location of the largest Union prison camp.

The newspaper carries war news some general news and even a bit of poetry. The back page contains a list of the staff of the Hospital as well as the names States and units of the current patients. There were about 250 patients at the Hospital when this issue of the newspaper was printed.

The newspaper also contains several Army reports and notices including one noting the continued poor health of General Meade and the likelihood that "in consequence thereof General Grant will command the army in person." Also included is a clarifying proclamation regarding amnesty issued by President Lincoln.

Issues of this wartime hospital newspaper are very uncommon. As an indication of its rarity: the American Antiquarian Society which has the country's largest collection of newspapers only holds nine issues of the paper not including the issue offered here. CIVIL WAR
The Excursion of the Bought Nominations Showing Balloon Union League

CIVIL WAR.Broadside "The Excursion of the Bought Nominations The Large Balloon 'Union League' Will Start Immediately. The Balloon is managed by the Old Hunkers in the Ring." 1864. 4 ¾ x 8 ½ in.
Historical Background
The Union League Club formed in New York in 1863 to support Union troops and cultivate civil devotion. Made up of prominent citizens in New York Philadelphia Brooklyn New Haven and Chicago the clubs raised money to provide for the U.S. Sanitary Commission and establish a group of political elites to sustain Union military efforts. The league favored a strong central government tariff protections and internal improvements.

The "Old Hunkers" were the conservative branch of the New York state Democratic party in the mid-nineteenth century. They favored the status quo whether in business or on the contentious issue of slavery. The more progressive "Barnburner" faction stood in opposition to the old Hunkers and were against slavery strong state powers expanding the public debt and government subsidizing businesses.

Though the Old Hunkers shared many similarities in terms of business philosophy with the Union League—especially that of strong central government power and infrastructure improvements—the disconnect between the two groups' stance on slavery makes this cartoon perplexing. Are the Old Hunkers carefully managing the political situation the balloon through the New York political machine note the capital "R" of Ring as in the infamous Tweed Ring Or are they setting the progressive Union Leaguers adrift

CIVIL WAR
The Success of Black Troops At Petersburg Virginia Under Butler

"They grinned and pushed on and with a yell that told the southern chivalry their doom they rolled irresistibly over and into the work."
CIVIL WAR.Broadside. New England Loyal Publication Society No. 200. Boston Mass. June 27 1864. 1 p. 9 x 10¾ in.
A New York Tribune reporter praises the performance of the USCT: "I find that in my account of the assault upon the rebel works in front of Petersburg I hardly did the colored troops justice. As before stated they held a position on the Jourdan Point road. They were first directed to assault the earthwork.the charge upon the advanced works was made in splendid style; and as the 'dusky warriors' stood shouting upon the parapet Gen. Smith decided that 'they would do' and sent word for them to storm the first redoubt. Steadily these troops moved on led by officers whose unostentatious bravery is worthy of emulation. With a shout and rousing cheers they dashed at the redoubt. Grape and canister were hurled at them by the infuriated rebels. They grinned and pushed on and with a yell that told the southern chivalry their doom rolled irresistibly over and into the work. The guns were speedily turned upon those of our 'misguided brethren' who forgot that 'discretion was the better part of valor.'

Another redoubt was carried in the same gallant style and the negroes have established a reputation that they will surely maintain."

With a discussion on using monies gathered from draft exemption payments to give bonuses when recruiting black troops in the South: "as the government will continue to receive exemption money why should it not devote the sums which are likely to be thus gathered to bounties for soldiers white or black enlisting in the South. In that way the ranks could be kept full."

With reports on how the Southern planter aristocracy hates Lincoln and Johnson as running mate because both rose through the ranks of the "common" people.

Historical Background

The Boston-based New England Loyal Publication Society and the Loyal Publication Society of New York was founded in 1863 to bolster public support by disseminating pro-Union news articles and editorials to newspapers around the country. At first the two groups read newspapers to identify particularly useful articles and editorials and contact the editors to request that additional copies be printed. These items would then be distributed to Union soldiers or to newspapers. As the war progressed the societies began to write and publish their own broadsides.

Condition

Very good. Tape 1 inch on verso at horizontal fold some water stains visible mostly from back. Better than it sounds!

DORR WAR
Ohio Reformers Use Rhode Island's Dorr Rebellion to Justify Their Own Behavior

DORR WAR.Pamphlet. The Dorr Movement in Ohio; Being an Examination into the Causes Progress and Probable Effects of the Revolutionary Course of Locofocoism in the Organization of the General Assembly of This State for the Session of 1848-49. Columbus Ohio: Legg & Murray Columbus 1849. Disbound. Inscribed in pencil on the title by H.A. Swift the author in presentation.
Historical Background
The Locofocos were a faction that split from the New York Democratic party in 1835 after local disagreements with machine politicians and Tammany Hall's support of Andrew Jackson's stance on the national bank. They opposed state banks monopolies exclusive privilege and other antidemocratic measures. They also advocated suspending paper money and legal protection of labor unions. In New York the machine politicians ultimately prevailed by co-opting their principal issues and nominating fusion candidates and reabsorbing the dissidents by 1838.

The anti-bank anti-corporation and increased democracy movement gained steam in neighboring Ohio throughout the 1840s with many looking to the Dorr movement in Rhode Island as a template for their own acts.

In 1841 Rhode Island's Thomas W. Dorr had led the effort to change Rhode Island's political system and expand voting rights. After trying to change the system internally he created the People's Party held an extralegal constitutional convention and set up a competing government. The Rhode Island General Assembly drafted a rival constitution and in 1842 both groups voted on their respective Constitutions. Both Dorr and sitting Governor Samuel Ward King were elected governor but King refused to accept the People's Constitution declared martial law and accused Dorr of treason. While he did not attempt to seize the State House or governmental institutions a few armed clashes did occur. Dorr fled the state but returned and was convicted in 1843 but released for health reasons two years later. Ultimately Rhode Island greatly liberalized voting rights in the aftermath of the rebellion.

NAIP 358662. The American Antiquarian Society lists another edition with slightly different imprint with 1848 date.
