‎(CIVIL WAR : VERSE BROADSIDE)‎

‎Battle of Cedar Creek. By Horace Maynard Co. E 28th Iowa Volunteers. Tune "Star-Spangled Banner." Caption title‎

‎New York: J. Dickson Printer 1864. Broadside in 4to. 310 x 235 mm. 12 x 9 ¼ inches. Caption and ten stanzas of verse in two columns within an ornamental border. Sheet somewhat dust-soiled with a few minor stains surface wear along folds one corner slightly chipped &c. Still entirely sound and with good margins. The Battle of Cedar Creek was fought in the Shenandoah Valley on October 19 1864. Surprised by the Confederate forces under the command of Jubal Early the Union troops were nearly routed. Riding to the battlefield from Winchester twenty miles away Gen. Philip Sheridan rallied the troops and carried the day. This action occasioned the slightly more famous poem by Thomas Buchanan Read. Private Maynard's poem centers more narrowly on the actions of the 28th Iowa. The regiment was organized in 1862 and mustered out in 1865 having fought campaigns in Mississippi Louisiana and Virginia losing 271 men in the process. "At dawn October 19 1864 the Confederate Army of the Valley under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early surprised the Federal army at Cedar Creek and routed the VIII and XIX Army Corps. Commander Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan arrived from Winchester to rally his troops and in the afternoon launched a crushing counterattack which recovered the battlefield. Sheridan's victory at Cedar Creek broke the back of the Confederate army in the Shenandoah Valley. Lincoln rode the momentum of Sheridan's victories in the Valley and Sherman's successes in Georgia to re-election." Horace Maynard born ca. 1821 in Ohio is listed in the 1860 Federal census as a school teacher in Penn Iowa residing there with his wife and three small children. American Battlefield Trust Website. Kansas Historical Society Enrollment of Civil War Veterans 1889. Note cited in OCLC. National Park Service Website. . J. Dickson, Printer unknown‎

‎WORLD WAR I EPHEMERA -- AIRCRAFT‎

‎Silhouettes d’Avions. Illustrated manuscript on paper in French With: French World War I Colonel’s Ledger an autograph note c. 1899-1904 and transcribed letters of 1914 from a certain E. Henry while stationed in Lorraine‎

‎France early 20th century. WWI ephemera -- aircraft. Silhouettes d'Avions Illustrated manuscript on paper in French. France: c. 1915-1925. 16 leaves pocket-sized: 135 x100mm. 15 hand- colored illustrations depicting three views of planes; two in profile and one bird’s eye view all are labeled for early French English and German aircraft models. Original paper wrappers titled Silhouettes d’Avions with later tape reinforcing hinge; somewhat brittle leaves loose but present. This skillful manuscript perhaps created by a younger person as an admirer of the craft represents sixteen popular models of biplane and monoplane patterns. This interesting piece of ephemera is inextricably linked to the three great European production centers of World War I-era aircraft: representing France England and Germany. World War I was the first walrus in which aircraft were deployed on a large scale. The sky had become another battlefield no less important than the battlefields of land and sea. Initially planes were used mostly for reconnaissance over the North Sea and strategic bombing raids. Then at the onset of war pilots and engineers learned from experience and developed many specialized models; including fighters bombers and ground-attack airplanes. These evolving flying machines were recognized to be not just toys but weapons. In addition fighter pilots were venerated as modern knights and many became popular heroes. All well represented are the French military aviation exercises of 1911 through 1913 that pioneered production of the Farman Caudron Voisin Breguet Nieuport fighter models. Listed for both French and English aircraft are the Bleriot and Morane models. England had “started late” and had initially relied largely on the French aircraft industry especially for engines. The English planes represented here are the Airco B.E. 2 and Vickers models. Notably the British Vickers was the first experimenting with mounting machine guns. Perhaps best represented by the whimsical drawings are the German planes of the variant Taube models including the Albatros Aviatik D.F.W. Jeannin Stahltaube and Rumpler Taube. The Rumpler Taube was a pre-World War I monoplane aircraft. It was the first mass-produced military plane in Germany and was the most common having two seats. Imperial Germany’s first practical military aircraft the Taube “dove” was used for virtually all military aircraft applications as a fighter bomber surveillance aircraft and trainer from 1910 until the start of World War I in August 1914. At least five versions of the Taube models are named and illustrated in this contemporary manuscript model book. With: French World War I Colonel’s Ledger an autograph note c. 1899-1904 and transcribed letters of 1914 from a certain E. Henry while stationed in Lorraine. Manuscript booklet on graph paper written in pencil in French 165 x 110mm. France: Sept.-Oct. 1918. Original blue wrappers with paper label “no. 10.” 15 leaves. Text consists of dated entries with brief daily descriptions of regiment activities one poignant line translated “beaucoup du cadavres sur le terrain” many corpses on the ground. Laid-in is 1 page autograph note listing eight men their death dates and a brief biographical description stained at edges and 4 page autograph manuscript signed “E. Henry” to “Ma cherie femme” of three different letters transcribed and docketed by the wife of Henry. Letters all dated August 1914 with content updating his wife on his news while stationed in Lorraine. He writes on 27th August 1914 translated “You cannot imagine the suffering I endured at my unfortunate wounds…” and goes on about his Lieutenant’s death although Henry finally says “Je suis en bonne posture” I’m in good shape. Madame Henry seemingly transcribed the letters on to one large folding bifolia to maintain their content. Interesting pieces of World War I era ephemera consisting of personal reflections and unofficial recordings of military operations in French regiments.

unknown‎

This book is not intended to be a diary as such as I have found that a day to day record of events becomes monotonous; but rather a medium that permits me to express myself on paper at thise inevitable times in the service when due to ones surroundings and situation there is nothing else to do. I shall also include such events as seem worthy of record and which I may like to preserve for the future in a clear cut form than memory alone provides. So I am now on the threshold of Operational Flying there should be much of interest and amusement which will be of interest and amusement." He then summarizes his Air Force Career and details what I assume is the "happenings of the last few months" as detailed at the beginning of this entry. This includes Scotland and Durban South Africa and Egypt. The rest of the journal is concerned with life and training in Africa and finishes abruptly on 21st July 1943. ‎UNIDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR VETERAN‎

‎ARCHIVE LOT OF 3 DIARIES 1903 1907 AND 1912 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT FROM WAYNE COUNTY NEW YORK AREA‎

‎WAYNE COUNTY NEW YORK NY. Good. 1903. Leatherette. Group of three handwritten diaries 1903 1907 1912 kept by this Civil War veteran who lived and farmed in Wayne County New York. Bindings and contents in very good condition. approx 6" x 3" 3 volumes 103pp in all written legibly in pencil. At the end of each volume is a detailed ledger of expenses yielding more details of farming. The author's style is eccentric semi-literate and very flavorful. For example: "Went over to the Collins Berring burying ground Mr. Wells was agointo put up some Hed Stones for Roswell and Matilda"; &c. &c. Together the three diaries give a comprehensive picture of life running a small-but-prosperous farm and orchard in upstate New York near Lake Ontario at the turn of the 20th century as reported by a simple unemotional but thorough man who does not identify himself. The author is fairly well off hiring a man or two to help with the field work almost every day although he works alongside the hired men. He also holds several mortgages on other people's properties. The diaries contain many details about working in the orchard and fields selling farm produce and livestock as well as doing maintenance to keep the farm and farmhouse operative. We also observe the changes in his farm chores and home activities as this Civil War veteran gets up in years. Visits to nearby towns are recorded: Rose; North Rose; Clyde; Lyons; Wolcott; Palmyra; State Fair at Syracuse; etc. Binding is cloth/leather.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; WAYNE COUNTY NEW YORK HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL PERSONAL HISTORY MEMOIR MEMORIAL DIARY JOURNAL DIARIES JOURNALS LOG LOGS KEEPSAKE AMERICANA . hardcover‎

‎Note reads "Dear Allie:The other day thru Miss B. Macdonald I heard you & Bill & the Baby had met with some misfortune due to the disaster at Halifax. I do wish you would let me hear from you thru some source. I wrote ages ago to you but do not know whether you ever received it. MacDonel #1 General Hospital B.E.F. France PresbyU.S.A.". E.A. may be an American nurse as the hospital she refers to was originally No.1 General Hospital BEF at Etretat on the Normandy coast. In 1917 it was taken over by the US Army mainly with Doctors and nurses from The Presbyterian Hospital of New York and Columbia University to help in the war effort. It thus became Base Hospital No.2. The "B.Macdonald" may well be Beatrice Macdonald who was Canadian . She was severely wounded at Ypres in 1917 ; returned to action at this hospital and received the Distinguished Service from the US Gov't. amongst other medals and decorations. unknown‎
