Egan, Thomas W. [Civil War General]
ALS to Edwards Pierrepoint seeking help to get him released from Ward's Island Insane Asylum
New York 1885. Manuscript. Very good condition. A Civil War example of severe PTSD. The Northern general and war hero Brevet Major General Thomas Egan was severely wounded four times during the war. His marriage broke down his only child was taken by his ex-wife to England and he degenerated into alcoholism. After being arrested for public intoxication in early July 1884 he was sentenced to Ward's Island Insane Asylum. This letter is his appeal to Pierrepont to secure his release. The return address is "Wards Island Insane Asylum Hospital Ward 2" which is heartbreaking.<br /> <br /> Egan's argument in the letter refers to Dr. Alex E. Macdonald sic 'the person that pronunced Guiteau sain sic that murdered President Garfield .not legible that Mr. H was insain won't you for the Lords sake see Mayor Grace or the commission and have me discharged shurley sic I deserve better of my country a record second to no soldier on Earth which Genl Grant will certify." Dr. Alex Macdonald was a prominent American physician and psychologist. In 1885 he was a resident physican at the New York City Asylum for the Insane on Ward's Island and would become superintendent the next year. Mr. H may refer to Allan McHale Hamilton who was an expert witness regarding Guiteau Garfield's assassin and pronounced him sane.<br /> <br /> Dr. R. Gregory Lande fittingly noted “The bullets and bombs stopped in 1865 but the social shock waves were just beginning.†As General Egan demonstrated many disabled veterans endured decades of poverty chronic pain and emotional distress long after the guns fell silent. “Down Fame’s Ladderâ€: Brigadier General Thomas W. Egan’s Unending War" by Frank Jastrzembski Posted on July 29 2019.<br /> <br /> Pierrepont 1817-1892 was an American attorney reformer jurist traveler New York U.S. Attorney U.S. Attorney General U.S. Minister to England and orator.1 Having graduated from Yale in 1837 Pierrepont studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840. During the American Civil War Pierrepont was a Democrat although he supported President Abraham Lincoln. wikipedia. He was a resident of Garrison NY. unknown

Mr. Sumner the Alabama Claims and their Settlement. A Letter to the "New York Herald.
New York: Douglas Taylor Printer 1878. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 20 pp. Reprinted from the New York Herald January 4 1878. As issued stitched in printed wrappers untrimmed. Minor toning to the wrappers and one small chip to the top of the front cover otherwise clean; some wear to the spine. <br /> <br /> An interesting statement relating to the Mr. Sumner's role and opinions related to the resolution of the Alabama claims the settlement between the United States and Great Britain over the English involvement on behalf of the Confederacy and the extent to which it prolonged the Civil War. Bancroft served on the joint high commission negotiating with Great Britain. Admitting that at the time of his writing this issue was "no longer connected with the politics of the day but has passed into history" p. 3 he nevertheless lays out some careful argument against some of Sumner's positions and claims related. And interesting and careful argument by the jurist diplomat and politician. Uncommon in commerce. Douglas Taylor, Printer unknown

United States. War Department. Proteus Court of Inquiry
Proceedings of the "Proteus" Court of Inquiry on the Greely Relief Expedition of 1883
<p>21-3101-265 pages with 6 folding maps 7 photo-lithographs on 4 plates and appendix containing correspondence relating to the Lady Franklin bay expedition 1881-83 and index. Royal octavo 9 1/2" s 6 1/4" bound in half leather with five raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. Senate Executive Document 100 48th Congress 1st Session. First edition.</p><p>The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881–1884 a.k.a. the Greely Expedition to Lady Franklin Bay on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic was led by Lieutenant Adolphus Greely and was promoted by the United States Army Signal Corps. Its purpose was to establish a meteorological-observation station as part of the First International Polar Year and to collect astronomical and magnetic data. During the expedition two members of the crew reached a new Farthest North record but of the original twenty-five men only seven survived to return.</p><p>The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition was led by Lieutenant Adolphus W. Greely of the Fifth United States Cavalry with astronomer Edward Israel and photographer George W. Rice among the crew of twenty-one officers and men. They sailed on the ship <em>Proteus</em> and reached St. John's Newfoundland in early July 1881. <em>Proteus</em> arrived without problems at Lady Franklin Bay by August 11 dropped off men and provisions and left. In the following months Lieutenant James Booth Lockwood and Sergeant David Legge Brainard achieved a new Farthest North record at 83°24′N 40°46′W off the north coast of Greenland.</p><p>By summer of 1882 the men were expecting a supply ship from the south.<em> Neptune</em> laden with relief supplies set out in July 1882 but cut off by ice and weather Captain Beebe was forced to turn around prematurely. All he could do was leave some supplies at Smith Sound in August and the remaining provisions in Newfoundland with plans for their delivery the following year.</p><p>In 1883 new rescue attempts by <em>Proteus</em> commanded by Lieutenant Ernest Albert Garlington and Yantic commanded by Commander Frank Wildes failed with Proteus being crushed by pack ice. In the summer of 1883 in accordance with his instructions for the case of two consecutive relief expeditions not reaching Fort Conger Greely decided to head South with his crew. It had been planned that the relief ships should depot supplies along the Nares Strait around Cape Sabine and at Littleton Island if they were unable to reach Fort Conger which should have made for a comfortable wintering of Greely's men. But with <em>Neptune</em> not even getting that far and Proteus sunk in reality only a small emergency cache with 40 days worth of supplies had been laid at Cape Sabine by <em>Proteus</em>.</p><p>When arriving there in October 1883 the season was too advanced for Greely to either try to brave the Baffin Bay to reach Greenland with his small boats or to retire to Fort Conger so he had to winter on the spot.</p><p>In 1884 Secretary of the Navy William E. Chandler was credited with planning the ensuing rescue effort commanded by Cdr. Winfield Scott Schley. While four vessels—<em>USS Bear USS Thetis HMS Alert</em> and <em>Loch Garry</em>—made it to Greely's camp on June 22 only seven men had survived the winter. The rest had succumbed to starvation hypothermia and drowning and one man Private Henry had been executed on Greely's order for repeated theft of food rations. Of the seven rescued Joseph Elison died on July 8 following multiple amputations. The relief party arrived at St. John's Newfoundland on July 17 1884 from which the news was telegraphed throughout the States and a sketched portrait of the members of the Greely Expedition both living and dead was published. After a stay of ten days the ships left for New York.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong>Rebound in period binding with refreshed end papers else very good.</p> Government Printing Office hardcover

[Spanish-American War – Philippine Insurrection – Kansas – Cartography] Cowles, Leman; Sellner, Geo.; et al.
Cowles Family Archive with Letters Written by Leman Cowles from the Philippines During the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection and Various Items Kept by Cowles During His Service Including a Scarce Map of American Military Operations in the Region
Philippines; Eldorado Kansas; and others 1910. Approximately 120 pieces: fifty-seven letters forty postcards five photographs seventeen pieces of miscellaneous personal effects and a map measuring 31 x 19 ¾ inches. Map attributed to Geo C. Sellner rolled with marginal tearing some tearing intersecting with subject; inscribed verso “L.T. Cowles. Manila P.I. June 27 1800â€; good to very good minus. Overall very good to excellent. Leman Tracy Cowles 1868–1947 was born in Eldorado Kansas and served in the Philippines with Company F of the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. He writes here to his parents homeopathic doctor Edwin Cowles 1820–1910 and Sarah McDuffee Cowles 1840–1912; other correspondents include Cowles siblings Olive Josephine 1873–1963 Edgar Andrew 1882–1961 and Alson Joseph 1883–1911.<br /> <br /> Of primary interest in the group are letter and materials from Leman Cowles who served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection. His letters most of which were written between 1898 and 1899 document daily life and combat with the “Fighting Twentiethâ€. <br /> <br /> Cowles first spends five months at Camps Merritt and Merriam in San Francisco which are hotbeds of disease and misbehavior; Cowles himself is robbed by a high-ranking enlisted man:<br /> <br /> “I partly woke up thinking my pillow was going off the bead bed . I put my hand back to prevent the things from falling out when I realized a scratching on the canvass tent and a step on the board step out side. I jumped down to the floor out the door when there he was not 35 feet away starting off on a run – I yelled ‘Here!’ and started for him but I don’t think you could have made him run harder. As I was not sure he had my money watch went back to see I did not know just where he went but I heard him go into a tent I thought I was sure it was one of the two first sargents tents.†September 1898<br /> <br /> Cowles arrives in Manila in December of 1898 where the regiment spends several months; he reports seeing Spanish prisoners of war “all over town†and that they “seem to be in very good condition†and “have quite a good deal of liberty†December 13. He next writes from Caloocan which the Kansas regiment occupied from February to late March of 1899 and where he first describes seeing action:<br /> <br /> “About 3-30 last night the nigs began shooting a lively tune and I was sound asleep. I tumbled out of my dog tent so fast I fell all over myself. . We didn’t shoot any this morning. I see a big smoke of some native bamboo shack burning in the edge of Malabon. Theres a stronger talk than ever about the enemys having a machine gun. They are yelling some this morning. Last eve something unusual seemed to be going on. What was it I heard Can it be Yes! Hundreds of niggers far up the line yelling at the top of their voices. But what about It grows more distinct and the little knots of boys who are telling tales of home and younger days begin to listen the to separate as the yells come along the line nearer our front. Now thousands of the black rascals have taken up the yell and in front of us clear to the left it rings. . This morning I heard the Nebraskas had rec’d some word of their going home and expressed their feelings in cheers. The enemy took it up. Something is ‘Gwine ter drap’ as the darkey said in a day or so the way things are shaping themselves.†March 22 1899<br /> Cowles writes again in April from Calumpit about General Funston’s crossing which he witnessed:<br /> “If you saw an account of Funston crossing the Rio Grand Pampanga at this place you will have read what I saw and I think it will go down in history. The canonading and infantry fire was somthing never to be forgotten by a witness. They had trenches . on the farther bank and covered top and front with iron. I afterwords saw where one of our shot had cut a 8 ½ ft. piece off a railroad rail also knocking a large piece from a section of cast iron bridge pier that was used as a cover and then went into the trench. From the way it made things fly I am sorry for the poor insurrectos in the neighborhood. They used an old muzzle loading brass cannon against us but with no effect as their aim was poor or the charge of improper purportion.†April 28 1899<br /> <br /> The map included in the group belonging to Leman Cowles is dated to around this time. It shows five provinces in Luzon with positions of the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay and the US plan of attack on it.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile the three other Cowles siblings attend college: Olive at Ottawa University in Kansas and Edgar and Alson at Kansas State University. Olive is involved with Baptist missionary work while her brothers’ careers are more technical. Their letters mainly concern coursework though later letters from Alson discuss his time as an electrical engineer with Allis-Chalmers.<br /> <br /> Overall an illuminating set of letters on the Philippine-American conflict with the remainder of the family’s correspondence and the material on homeopathy providing additional context and breadth. Of interest to scholars of the Philippine-American War the Kansas Volunteer Infantry and more broadly of family histories from the region and period. unknown

[1870-1871 WAR]
Dieu et Patrie ! Souvenirs d’un volontaire de l’Ouest.
<p><strong>Probably the only surviving copy of this rich account of the enlistment and service of a young volunteer soldier from the West.</strong><br />Entirely autographed and illustrated with a few compositions the author recounts in 24 chapters the war in which he took part his enlistment in the 4th company of the 3rd battalion at Le Mans his Chassepot bayonet rifle his comrades and superiors the Papal Zouaves the descendants of Charette and Stofflet his travels in the West and of course the Prussians.</p><p><em>"My aim is not to invent a novel of pure fantasy; there is no such thing as the simple statement of a fact stripped of all fabulous exaggeration. My intention is therefore to relate very imperfectly no doubt memory is so unfaithful the vicissitudes in the midst of which I lived during four months of a campaign at the height of winter and the impressions I was able to bring back. I wish to preserve in this account an entire truth a character of frankness and authenticity that removes the slightest doubt."</em></p>

Mexican Americana California Civil War California Native Cavalry
Muster Roll for Company B of the First Battalion Native Cavalry California Volunteers "Californio Lancers" - Aug. 31 1865
Camp Low 1865. Original partially printed document 26cm x 77cm. Printed on both sides of the sheet completed in manuscript. Darkening at folds from old tape repairs; partial splits to folds and extremities; complete and quite Good. Docketed verso signed in ink by Lieutenant Morgan Owen. Lists twelve enlisted soldiers most with Spanish surnames two with French surnames. Fine. The formation of the California Native Cavalry in 1863 marked a significant chapter in the state's history. Comprising primarily Mexican-American individuals colloquially referred to as "native" Californians the California Native Cavalry unit was formed 1863. Initially commanded by Maj. Andreas Pico a distinguished hero from the Mexican-American War and later under Salvador Vallejo the regiment drew its ranks from diverse backgrounds. Recruitment efforts began with vaqueros from southern California expanding to include individuals from San José and San Francisco. The unit boasted a varied composition encompassing not only Mexican-Americans but also Chilenos California and Yaqui Indians and even French legionnaires.<br /> Company "B" a contingent largely recruited from the northern part of the state is reflected in the existing muster roll. The company assembled at Camp Low near San Juan Bautista in 1865 making a striking entrance into the town. Described as "gay and gallant Spanish lancaroes" the cavalrymen presented a formidable sight with lances in hand and flags flying leaving a lasting impression on the townspeople who had never before encountered soldiers."The gay and gallant Spanish lancaroes sic came dashing through the town with the lances in their hand a flag flying from each of them. I assure you that they presented a war like appearance the people here had never seen a soldier in their lives – Yes Sir!." letter Maj. Michael O'Brien to Gov. Frederick Low January 1865; quoted in Prezelski "Lives of the Californio Lancers: the First Battalion of Native California Cavalry" in Journal of Arizona History v.40 no.1 Spring 1999. <br /> Under the command of Capt. Porfirio Jimeno Company B swiftly engaged in a critical mission: dismantling the notorious Mason-Henry Gang that had terrorized the San Juan region in the preceding months. Despite successfully wounding John Mason in early April 1865 the gang persisted for another month until Mason met his demise at the hands of a miner he sought to kidnap.<br /> However Company B faced challenges including low morale and a high rate of desertions with over 40 men leaving the company in 1865 alone. Transferred to Tubac Arizona Territory to confront the Apaches the company encountered further desertions along the way. The muster roll listing only twelve soldiers alongside Capt. Porfirio Jimeno reflects this tumultuous period. Overall the muster roll provides scarce documentation of the role of Mexican-Americans in the Civil War with few other examples in the trade or institutionally. unknown

Taber, Isaac Walton
THE GROUND IN FRONT OF BATTERY ROBINETTE original drawing
New York: The Century Co. 1884. The image is 4 5/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches on artist board measuring 14 1/2 inches by 12 1/4 inches. Original ink drawing by Walton Taber 1857-1933 after a post-battle photograph. The scene shows dead Confederate soldiers in front of Battery Robinette on October 5 1862 the morning after the battle at Corinth Mississippi. Civil War historians J. Matthew Gallman and Gary W. Gallagher attributed the photograph to Ohio born and Corinth based photographer George Washington Armistead . However the Library of Congress has a virtually identical photographic negative that is attributed to Nicholas D. Brown. Although the photographer's identity remains uncertain it is clear that the drawing is by Walton Taber and is signed by him in the lower left corner of the image. Taber did the drawing for the Century Company who published it on page 751 of volume 2 of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. This drawing along with others by Taber that were included in the Century Collection of Civil War Art was auctioned by Christie's in New York in 1988. Born in New Bedford Massachusetts Taber was one of the most important American illustrators during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His pen and ink drawings provided the Century Company almost 250 illustrations for Battles and Leaders. The drawing offered here is in near fine condition: clean and bright on artist board that is lightly and uniformly toned on the recto; there is some minor soiling on the verso along with notations made by Century editors and a later framer. The drawing is now archivally matted and ready for a 16" by 16" frame. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Near Fine. Illus. by Isaac Walton Taber. 4 5/8" by 7 1/4". Fine Art Print. The Century Co.

(WORLD WAR II ARCHIVE)
The Archive Of Meyer J. Frechie The Jewish American Army Officer Who Organized Covert Allied Transportation To Normandy For D-Day
MEYER J. FRECHIE 1907-1988. An American Army Lieutenant Colonel in World War Two Frechie was Chief of the Operational Branch of the Transportation Office and was responsible for coordinating the transportation logistics of the Normandy Invasion D-Day. Archive. More than 1600 pieces. 1942-1953. The archive of Lieutenant Colonel later Colonel Meyer J. Frechie. The archive primarily dates from 1942 to 1945. It includes letters to and from his family in Philadelphia including his wife young son parents and sister and military papers including some interesting material directly related to his work in Allied transportation.Frechie a graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania worked as a traffic manager for the railroad and steamship industries before the war. After the United Statess entry into World War Two the military actively courted Frechie for his skill in transportation logistics. He joined the war effort as a civilian traffic manager for the Army in 1941 before officially joining the Army at the rank of Captain in February 1942 and being sent to London. There he was put in charge of coordinating the covert transport of Allied servicemen and supplies from England to Normandy for D-Day. According to the lengthy text accompanying his citation for the Legion of Merit Frechies war-time activities were in part as follows:The Operational Branch Movements Division Office of the Chief of Transportation was activated in August 1943. Lt. Col. Frechie being the only officer available with amphibious operational experience was designated Chief of said Branch. He developed his staff by sending his officers and men thru a series of strenuous exercises with the British and American Forces at various places in the United Kingdom in preparation for D-DayLt. Col. Frechie as Chief of the Operational Branch was responsible for the movement of all troops vehicles equipment and supplies for movement OVERLORD. From D-Day to 7 September 1944 a total of 1302954 personnel 260433 vehicles and 1272532 deadweight tons of supplies have been shipped from the United Kingdom ports to the Continent. The entire OVERLORD movement program was executed by the movement instructions issued by the Operational BranchLt. Col. Frechie arranged for the building of scale models of various landing craft and scale wood blocks of various general purpose and special purpose vehicles to be used in movement OVERLORDParticipating in actual exercises where one or more of the plans were tested by actual execution Lt. Col. Frechie analysed the results and proceeded t make final plans for movement to implement Army requirements. Lectures were made to the Air Force and Ground Services outlining movement plans; ports and depots were visited and careful studies made of their capacity to handle the vast quantity of supplies vehicles and personnel necessary to sustain the operation. Many obstacles were confronted and surmounted by Lt. Col. Frechie in perfection of operation OVERLORDThis required the greatest flexibility in operation which the Operational Branch under Lt. Col. Frechie was able to exert with dispatchAt all times Lt. Col. Frechies superior judgment keen foresight expert planning and unselfish devotion to duty maintained an exceedingly high state of morale among the officers and men associated with him and his efforts can be directly attributed to the prolonged success of this vitally important mission of the Transportation Corps.Frechie was discharged from active duty in November 1945 and served in the Army Reserves until 1953. He was promoted to Colonel in 1946.The archive contains two large boxes and three small boxes of letters and documents. All are in at least good condition with the exception of a few torn letters. Highlights are as follows:One large box of military paperwork. The highlight is a book entitled Berth Allocation Ports UK and marked Most Secret on the cover; it examines many British ports and their capacity in preparation for the D-Day Landings. It includes a booklet of secret maps and information about ports in the United Kingdom. There is also a thick file of diverse paperwork relating to Frechies military career a mix of originals and copies some of it quite mundane such as records of his travel within the UK booklets written by Frechie including Preliminary Analysis and Recommendations Cargo Documentation Procedure and Historical Critique of the United Kingdom Overlord Movements three copies certificates of appointment as Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel copies of his Honorable Discharge citations for the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit and a thick file of documents relating directly to his work on the Normandy landings. Much of the most interesting and unique material can be found in this box. The two thick files are hundreds of pages each. One large box of hand-written letters and copies of V-Mail to and from Frechies wife Rita and son Allen. There are 659 letters from Frechie to Rita and Allen including many duplicates. They are dated 1942-1945 and 1947 and there are also numerous letters dated only with the month and day. The greatest number are dated late 1942 and 1943 when he wrote multi-page letters to her every day often more than once per day.
