U. S. Geological Survey
Conventional Map Signs British And French January 1918
Washington D. C.: U. S. Geological Survey. Very Good. 1918. Other. B&W and Color Illustrations; This is one small sheet of cardstock folded once vertically. The interior includes color and black and white illustrations of different marks used by the British on the left side and French on the right as part of their maps for World War I - possibly especially for trench warfare. The front of this item with the title has some light generalized toning and a previous owner's inked name and squadron 59th squadron on the top edge. The interior is clean and bright. "Trench warfare prevailed on the Western Front from late 1914 until the Germans launched their Spring Offensive on 21 March 1918. After the buildup of forces in 1915 the Western Front became a stalemated struggle between equals to be decided by attrition. Frontal assaults and their associated casualties became inevitable because the continuous trench lines had no open flanks. Casualties of the defenders matched those of the attackers as vast reserves were expended in costly counter-attacks or exposed to the attacker's massed artillery. There were periods in which rigid trench warfare broke down such as during the Battle of the Somme but the lines never moved very far. The war would be won by the side that was able to commit the last reserves to the Western Front. " . U. S. Geological Survey unknown

(Ephemera) [World War I] [World War I Balloons] [Balloon Patrols][Ballonhalle Von Innen]
Two Original Postcards From World War I Germany Featuring Balloons
Germany: No Publisher Listed. Very Good-. 0. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two World War I postcards 5.5" x 3.5" in Very Good- condition. Both postcards are not filled in with the exception of four words inked on one of the postcards. The cards are labeled: Fesselballon vor dem Aufstieg and Ballonhalle von Innen. One postcard has a one and a half cent stamp. "World War I was the high point for the military use of observation balloons which were extensively deployed by both sides. The British despite their experience in late 1800s Africa were behind developments and were still using spherical balloons. These were quickly replaced by versions commonly referred to as kite balloons which were flyable and could operate in more extreme weather conditions; at first the German Parseval-Siegsfeld type balloon and then French Caquot type dirigible. By World War I artillery had developed to the point where it was capable of engaging targets beyond the visual range of a ground-based observer. Positioning artillery observers on balloons generally a few miles behind the front lines and at altitude allowed them to see targets at greater range than they could on the ground. This allowed the artillery to take advantage of its increased range." from Wikipedia . No Publisher Listed. unknown

This did not happen; either the women were sacked to make way for the returning soldiers or women remained working alongside men but at lower wage rates. But even before the end of the war many women refused to accept lower pay for what in most cases was the same work as had been done previously by men. The women workers on London buses and trams went on strike in 1918 to demand the same increase in pay war bonus as men. The strike spread to other towns in the South East and to the London Underground. This was the first equal pay strike in the UK which was initiated led and ultimately won by women." .
