After the unpaged front matter which is printed on one side of the leaf each chapter has separate pagination and the pages of the Appendices are numbered A1-1 and so forth." Original cream-colored textured card-wrappers lithoprinted on the front "Released for Publication on _________" side-stapled 2; corners curled variously soiled representative of 'normal' exposure. Signature of M.J. Coffee. Good. / PROVENANCE: "M.J. Coffee / Rm 213 Chemistry Bldg. / Ohio State Univ. / Columbus Ohio" With an inscribed index card "This is my copy of the A-Bomb record sent to all the people who were instrumental in perfecting the bomb used on Hiroshima Nagasaki. It was sent out after the war to people who worked for the Manhattan Project. I was at the Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio." FIRST OFFICIAL PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE MANHATTAN PROJECT :: THE CREATION OF THE ATOMIC BOMB. LIMITED EDITION of about 1000 copies. Jones. First official government statement printed and released on August 12 1945 solely for persons related to the project and the press being the first printed account of the development of the Manhattan Project and the atomic bomb issued just six days after the bombing of Hiroshima. The lithoprinting was done in the Adjunct General's Office in the Pentagon. / Coleman describes the conditions by which this book was put together "It is apparent that gathering the leaves for binding was done in haste under the pressure of tight security precautions. Pages are lacking or repeated in several copies that have been seen." :: p. 206. This copy is complete. / "Researchers should note that correspondence dealing with the writing and editing of the Smyth Report is mainly located in Series V Smyth Report. This correspondence appears to have been filed by Smyth with related materials i.e. notes draft manuscripts early printings for several reasons. His primary intent appears to have been continuity; the correspondence discussing his work on the Smyth Report often refers to specific drafts now also filed in Series V. These letters were also often classified "Secret" and "Top Secret" along with his various manuscript versions from 1944 through 1945. These materials remained together over the years while in Smyth's possession periodically undergoing review for declassification as a group by the U.S. AEC. For these reasons as well as the fact that Smyth meticulously arranged Series V himself the correspondence dealing with the Smyth Report has been maintained in its original order and assigned to this separate series. Cross referencing has been done for correspondents who appear in Series V Smyth Report; the existence of letters in Series V has been noted under the appropriate correspondent's name in the Series I section of the container list." :: American Philosophical Society Henry DeWolf Smyth Papers. / In addition page VI-12 contains the sometimes missing "secret" classified content dealing with plutonium production rates. This copy contains both the entire section V and the plutonian production rates from VI-12. / "The story of the development of the atomic bomb by the combined efforts of many groups in the United States is a fascinating but highly technical account of an enormous enterprise. Obviously military security prevents this story from being told in full at this time. However there is no reason why the administrative history of the Atomic Bomb project and the basic scientific knowledge on which the several developments were based should not be available now to the general public. To this end this account by Professor H. D. Smyth is presented./ All pertinent scientific information which can be released to the public at this time without violating the needs of national security is contained in this volume . . ." :: Major General L.R. Groves foreword. / "There was published on 12 August 1945 six days after the atomic attack on Hiroshima the remarkably full and candid account of the development work carried out between 1940 and 1945 by the American-directed by internationally-recruited team of physicists under the code name of 'Manhattan District' which culminated in the production of the first atomic bomb. . . Compiled by Professor Smyth of Princeton a consultant to the 'Manhattan District' project at Los Alamos whose commandant General L.R. Groves provided the foreword 'the Smyth Report' as it is familiarly known was published at one dollar by the U.S. Superintendent of Documents" :: Printing and the Mind of Man 422e. / Smyth 1898-1986 Professor of Physics at Princeton served as a consultant to the Manhattan Project from 1943-45. [Dutch-Portuguese War]
RELACION CIERTA Y VERDADERA DE LA FELIZ VITORIA Y PROSPEROS SUCESSOS QUE EN LA INDIA ORIENTAL HAN CONSEGUIDO LOS PORTUGUESES CONTRA ARMADAS MUY PODEROSAS DE OLANDO Y PERSIA ESTE AÑO DE 1624. LA FECHA EN LA CIUDAD DE GOA CABEÇA DE AQUEL REYNO A 27. DE MARÇO DEL DICHO AÑO Y VINO EN LA NAO SANTO TOMÊ
Madrid: Bernardino de Guzman 1625. 4pp. In Spanish. Decorative woodcut initial on first page. Small folio. Dbd. Light contemporary annotations in margins of each page. Early folds. Loss repaired in silk to gutter and outer margins and along one fold affecting a few characters of text on p.4. Overall very good. Rare Spanish newsletter reporting on recent victories by the Portuguese against the Dutch the Persians and others throughout Asia in 1624. The early 17th century saw the Dutch begin to present a serious threat to Portuguese power and commerce in the East and by the mid-1620s the Portuguese were beleaguered by constant attacks by the Dutch navy and its various Asian allies. The present Spanish newsletter celebrates one of the last great series of Dutch defeats by the Portuguese who are lauded here by their Iberian partners as worldwide defenders of the Catholic faith holding their ground against overwhelming odds. Within a few years the Dutch would clearly gain the upper hand in Asia both militarily and commercially and by 1663 would control much of the Malabar Coast Ceylon Indonesia Malacca and European trade with Japan leaving Portugal only with bases at Macao East Timor and Portuguese India. <br> <br> The newsletter discusses several naval battles off the coast of Persia down the Malabar Coast to Ceylon to Malacca China and Macao. A significant portion of the pamphlet describes the heavy Portuguese losses sustained by repeated attacks on Macao by the Dutch who by this time had established a base in the Pescadores Islands. In the last paragraph attention is turned to the activities of the Jesuits in Ethiopia described here as the "Realm of Prester John" and the recent conversion of Ethiopian King Suseynos to Roman Catholicism. <br> <br> Palau records four printings of the text assigning priority to the present document and locating one copy at the National Library in Madrid. Palau also notes that a copy of this printing was sold by Maggs Bros. for £5 5s in 1927 and by Melchor GarcÃa for 35 pesetas in 1934. OCLC locates four copies at the Bavarian State Library in Germany the University of Amsterdam the Newberry Library and the University of Chicago. PALAU 257729. Bernardino de Guzman unknown

[Mexican-American War]
Autograph Letter Signed from W.W. Tuley to His Friend Back Home in Indiana with Detailed Content on Mexico and the War
Saltillo 1847. Good plus. 5pp. Quarto. Old folds first two leaves with minor tape repairs third leaf extensively repaired at folds slight separation at some folds. Minor soiling in a legible hand. Lengthy and detailed missive sent by William Woodruff Tulley to his friend John Milton Worrall of New Albany Indiana describing Mexico in some detail during his time there with the army. Tulley 1825-1902 served with Company A of the Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican-American War; he went on to serve in the Civil War as a colonel. Herein he describes some of army life much of Mexican scenery and some troop information. He opens in gratitude for a letter received saying it has resuscitated him after a long march: "You have no idea of the fatigue endured by moving troops especially when they are compelled to sling on a huge knapsack weighing eighteen or twenty pounds. And who is he that would dare give out and say I can go no farther even though the toes be red as a tomato and the heels well o'erlaid with blisters". He follows by noting that he had no real notion of what Mexico was like before arriving finding it truly beautiful.<br /> <br /> "Upon the banks of the Rio Grande from Matamoras to Camargo lie as pretty and as good land as the world can produce. Cotton grows upon it without cultivation and cane of excellent quality is grown on many plantations. . Mier of some notoriety is a place of beauty and cleanliness. The houses are of stone and two large Catholic cathedrals rear their lofty cupolas high above the residences. Every Mexican town or city has its 'Plaza' and many more than one. That at Mier is well flanked by square topped houses whoever saw a Mexican house of any size that was not square topped generally occupied by men of business. The streets were paved by the 'Mier prisoners.' Think not that there are farms and gardens around the city; far from it. Nothing but barren rocky hills present themselves on every side. Just think of it; a place as large as New Albany situated amid a barren waste a perfect wilderness. All their articles of merchandise are imported on pack mules."<br /> <br /> The "Mier Prisoners" referred to were Texans captured after a skirmish in 1842 subsequently either shot or forced into labor and prison. Tuley goes on to give mention to Seralvo Monterey and Saltillo giving pronunciation instructions for that one. "After leaving Monterey we clambered over mountain passes deep dells long ravines and the devil knows what all encountering the thorns of the shrubbery at almost every step. . We staid out of Saltillo twelve days and this evening the regiment is moving in to the city. The church at Saltillo in richness and size is said to surpass every other in the country except that at the City of Mexico." He continues with some military updates: ".I am now acting as Clerk to Major A.S. Morrison Commissary for Subsistence for the Indiana Brigade of Volunteers and thus you find me in the City while the company to which I belong has not come in yet. . Tis said there are about five thousand Mexicans near the city now awaiting a favorable time to attack us." He also gives an account of American troop numbers. Interestingly in relaying greetings to home and friends he writes "Give Old Rodin my best best wishes and Amos the old coon the same" possibly referencing African American slaves or servants. A personable and informative letter from the frontlines of the Mexican-American War written by a literate correspondent. unknown

Mexican American War. Catholicism
Gobierno Eclesiastico del Arzobispo de Mexico. A Nuestros Respetables Coadjutores los Parrocos de Esta Ciudad y Distrito caption title
Mexico City: November 17 1847. About very good. Broadside approximately 12 x 8.5 inches. Previously folded two small tape repairs on blank verso. Small chip at upper left corner. Contemporary manuscript rubrics. Light toning and dust soiling. This scarce order was issued by the Archbishop of Mexico two months after the capture of Mexico City by the United States Army. It contains six articles that detail instructions for administering the last rites and orders for several other difficult matters in the occupied city. The extreme unction is to be performed secretly only in the mornings and at night unless the physician believes it is not possible to wait and further instructions are given on how to proceed secretly but properly with the ritual. The fifth article states that that if the American troops insult the residents the clergy should try to restore calm to obtain assistance from the local guards and to inform the American garrison commanders. The final article states that parish priests should "Proceder con la mayor prudencia y usar de los medios y vias mas suaves á fin de evitar toda clase de disturbios." An interesting reflection of the official fear of American distaste for Catholicism; we locate only one example at Yale. November 17 unknown

A large unique book ca. 1900 14 x 8.5 inches vertically oriented; softcover about 100 pages of typescript in purple carbon very seldom with ink corrections culled from “The Republic†— probably the Baraboo Republic a newspaper of the period published in Baraboo the county seat of Sauk County Wisconsin this book with material relating to the Iron Brigade the 6th Wisconsin Regiment of volunteers who fought for the Union in the Civil War and also concerning the Sauk County Riflemen.
