‎Civil War: Bamberger Solomo‎

‎MAP OF BATTLES ON BULL RUN NEAR MANASSAS ON THE LINE OF FAIRFAX & PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA FOUGHT BETWEEN THE FORCES OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA‎

‎Richmond: West & Johnsto 1861. Sheet map 19 3/4 x 26 inches. Old fold lines. Some separation at two folds on the right edge. Light wear minor toning. Very good. A handsome and historic map depicting the First Battle of Manassas or Bull Run depicting troop positions and movements roads railroads houses and other significant geographical features. First Manassas was the first significant engagement of the Civil War and the place where Thomas J. Jackson became "Stonewall" Jackson when his brigade stood their ground against disorganized Union forces. The Confederate troops won the battle raising hopes in the South and signaling to the North that the war would not be won so easily. The map indicates that it was "made from observation" by Solomon Bamberger and lithographed by the firm of Hoyer & Ludwig in Richmond.

It appears that at least two issues of this map exist this being the most vividly pictorial that we have found and thus perhaps the later of the two. Rather than a simple plan of the battle the present map lays out the same information augmenting the background with shading and pictorial scenery. The title is likewise enclosed in a simple border setting it off from the rest of the map and though the title is the same the typeface of some of the title lettering has been changed slightly. Parrish & Willingham do not indicate any differentiation of issues but the details and graphics make this by far the most desirable.

A rare and interesting map of this important battle and one of the most dramatic graphics produced in the Confederacy. Without the means to produce suitable paper few pieces on a comparable scale were created. PARRISH & WILLINGHAM 6148 West & Johnsto unknown‎

‎[World War I – Ottoman Empire – Turkish War of Independence] "HC." H. C.‎

‎Letters Home from an American Professor Working in the Ottoman Empire in the Aftermath of World War I.‎

‎Constantinople New York City and others 1922. Four letters totaling seven pages. Folded else fine. A small collection of letters from “H.C.†who seems to have been an American university professor in Constantinople to his “Darling Clementine†back home. H.C. may have taught at Robert College a Christian college founded in 1863 now a prestigious private highschool.

It is not clear when H.C. first arrived in Constantinople but he had been there for several years already by the time the letters begin and was certainly there at a critical point in its history. He writes in 1918 shortly after the arrival of occupying forces:

“conditions are still very bad in town I long to see the suffering diminished. Some say it will be months yet. Sometimes now there is no coal no electric light no bread no water. Can you imagine the state of an Oriental city under such conditions We have had are still having trouble about light water-supply but we have steam heat plenty of food of a plain kind. We all keep well. . I hear that an American Red Cross boat will arrive next week I am eager to see its passengers. We may have a chance to leave on it but I can not see my way clear to skip because our faculty is depleted ever since the exodus at the time of the panic long ago when Miss Lyon left. . We have a good college now – boarders about 90 in the College-department – and many day scholars but lately the Spanish fever the lack of tram-car service has kept many students away. As soon as our cousins supply coal we hope for improvement. The Ententists are spreading over the city thoroughly quietly – like oil. It is a delight to see so many manly looking officers after the ones we have had here for years. There is a spiritual look in the eyes of the present occupants a look of bull-dog determination.†December 6 1918

H.C. enjoys a “real yachting cruise†on his way back to Constantinople from the States in 1921 tells Clementine about his plans for his commencement speech in 1922 and describes a college reception in New York City which “General Custer’s wife†Elizabeth Bacon Custer attended undated letter. Meanwhile Turkey was engaged in its brutal war for independence. At some point H.C. befriended Electra—probably a Greek woman—whom he sent along to visit Clementine in part to help Electra cope with her traumatic experiences during the war:

“As you will recall my young friend’s father was executed – tho innocent – with about 70 others. At first E. bore this with wonderful fortitude but after Xmas a reaction set in naturally enough. She developed morbidness a hyper sensitive attitude toward all of my looks words – probably a condition due to shock. I am confident that travel new scenes interests will bring her back to her old self your wholesome household will chase all gloom away. A doctor told her lately that she has hysteria that she must think of cheerful things only. I tell you this thinking that you might keep her from talking about the nation that does cruel things. The truth is that cruelty is pretty generally distributed a judicial mind finds it difficult to pick choose. Some nations get the public ear so the pot can call the kettle black!†June 6 1922

Indeed both sides of the Greco-Turkish war—part of the larger Turkish campaign for independence—massacred each other. However only the Turkish contingent’s actions have been argued by historians to constitute ethnic cleansing or genocide.

Of interest to historians of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey post-World War I especially Americans’ experience thereof. unknown‎

‎[Judaica - World War Two - Immigration - Ellis Island] Rosendor, Bitia‎

‎Portfolio of Drawings and Memoir Documenting a Forty-Day Internment at Ellis Island While Fleeing Nazi Persecution in 1941‎

‎New York City 1941. Thirty-three sketches mainly measuring 6 x 8 or 8 x 10 inches affixed to black construction paper. Sketches are pen and ink or pencil some with captions. With seventeen typed pages mainly measuring 6 ½ x 7 inches. In an 11 x 14 ½ inch portfolio. Spine of portfolio missing all pages separated; sketches excellent construction paper with much marginal chipping; typed pages with adhesive verso else excellent. Overall very good to excellent. Bitia Rosendor 1920–2011 was a Jewish artist born in Jerusalem and raised in Antwerp Belgium. Rosendor studied painting and sculpture at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp but her studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. The Rosendor family fled Europe via Portugal in 1941 and were detained at Ellis Island where these sketches were produced.

The sketches include portraits of other detainees and immigration employees and views from the island. Most have captions including brief notes about the subjects such as “She became hysterical and was taken to the hospital†“A little orphan going all alone to the Dominican Republic†and “‘Liberty’ through barsâ€â€”the latter on an illustration of the Statue of Liberty seen through the bars on the internment center’s windows.

The typed text describes Rosendor’s experience waiting for the family’s Visa to be approved. The ordeal is mostly one of boredom; she writes:

“Everyone had the same endless day to pass but everyone passed it differently. There was no possible way to be original but each of us retained her or his personality. The emptiness of the hours was heavy to bear.â€

The boredom though is punctuated by “incidentsâ€; some negative as when “Once a Chinese girl wept for three days uninterrupted refused to eat refused everything†and some positive as when “A friend seen last time at the Antipodes†disembarks “from a newly entered ship . and suddenly: ‘YOU’! -’YOU’â€.

Rosendor would live with her family in Brooklyn until the 1950s when she returned to Europe with her husband Jewish-American painter Martin Reisberg a fellow immigrant whom she met in the city. The pair returned to Belgium where they ran a gallery and created exhibitions together until Rosendor’s death in 2011.

Of interest to scholars of the Holocaust American immigration and the Jewish immigrant experience in the 1940s. unknown‎

‎[Civil War – Politics] Selby, Rev. Josiah‎

‎Letters from Rev. Josiah Selby of Ohio to His Brother William Remarking on The Know-Nothings Rail Maulers Wide Awakes and the Civil War: “The Blood of the Puritan and his Western Children has Stained the Soil in Dixies Land†Written to his Brother in California‎

‎Seneca County Ohio and Iowa City Iowa 1864. Five letters. One with water stain not affecting legibility; otherwise excellent to near fine. Offered here are five letters dating between 1856 and 1864 from Josiah Selby 1822–1888 to his younger brother William Selby 1826–1918 in El Dorado County California. The letters mainly consist of fairly droll commentary on politics and current events. In late 1860 Selby reports that a friend in Maryland Billy

“says that the crops are so short in Maryland that some of the folks think that they will have to cut the end off the Johnny Cake board for there is some doubt about them getting any Johnny cake. Poor fellows no wonder they are know-nothings in that state. The Know Nothing party having no platform and Mr Bell’s letter of acceptance put forth no principles or shadowed forth no line of policy. I should not like to vote that ticket unless Mr. Everett’s name came first and hard by then if I thought he sympathized with any Northern men with southern principles – We have had enough of that kind of dodging in the past.†November 15 1860

The “Know-Nothing†Party also known as the American Party was a nativist and anti-Catholic political party founded in the 1840s. By 1860 the American Party had essentially disbanded and been merged into the Constitutional Union Party which ran John Bell and Edward Everett as its presidential ticket that year. On the topic of that year’s election particularly Democrat candidate Stephen A. Douglas Selby writes further:

“Old Abe will quit mauling rails now and go to Cabinet making. & Stephen A. can quit the idea of cabinet making and go to mauling rails. He says that Abe always had a knack of getting forward in the world. We believe it. . They have got done voting for General Jackson in Pennsylvania as the returns show. The north has waked up at last & I am glad of it.â€

By “mauling rails†and “waked up†Selby is probably referring to the Rail Maulers and Wide Awakes two Republican political clubs and soon-to-be paramilitary groups.1 He is also making a pun about Douglas’s time as an apprentice cabinet maker and the presidential cabinet and perhaps about Lincoln’s and Douglas’s history with railroads.

Selby writes to his brother again in 1862 with comments on the war which he wishfully took to be “about played out†and “Rebeldom about defunct.†He reflects on the Battle of Pittsburg Landing now typically known as the Battle of Shiloh:

“The deep bass sounded at Pittsburg landing on the Tennessee river will continue to vibrate on the cords of many a northern heart for a long time and southern chivalry will have to make some sacrifices . But every dog must have its day and now the mighty West and North Freedom’s lair must have its dominion from sea to sea and from the polar circle to the tropics bright. Hurra for Freedom in its might. The blood of the Puritan and his western children has stained the soil in Dixies land. That seed will produce fruit on that prolific ground.†May 15 1862

By 1864 as the “war still drags its slow length along†Selby has moved to Iowa City. A year prior Congress had passed the Enrollment Act which enacted a military draft for the Union Army and Selby observes young men going to extremes to evade it:

“There is a tremendous rush for the gold regions Idaho Colorado and California just at present the State road from here to Marengo is lined with teams mostly stout young men are with them doubtless many of them are going to avoid the draft. Uncle Sam has need of the gold hunters but they seem to think that if he will only let them alone as Jeff Davis says they can get along finely without his uniform. Cousin Harry has been offered $60.00 per month and rations to work for Uncle Sam at his trade. Accordingly he took his tools and vamoosed last Thursday to a warmer climate. He started for St. Louis Mo.†April 16 1864

The significant gold rushes in those regions had already happened by 1864 so if Selby’s observation of another rush is accurate his explanation of it is plausible as well. Enrollment in the Union Army was flagging and the 1863 Act—which allowed draftees to pay their way out of the draft—was extremely unpopular most famously leading to riots in New York City.

Overall the letters provide an entertainingly written view of some better- and lesser-known Civil War-era figures and events.

1 Kenneth M. Stampp Indiana Politics during the Civil War Indiana University Press: 1978 45. unknown‎

‎[Philippine-American War] Ellsworth, Herbert E. [likely]‎

‎“Good Luck to the American Soldiers in the Philippinesâ€‎

‎Likely San Francisco California 1901. 19 x 24 inch lithograph. Much staining and chipping; folded with tears; several tape repairs verso with some residue visible recto; quite attractive overall good plus. A broadside lithograph commemorating a soldiers’ service in the Philippine-American war. Images of generals are set in a large blue horseshoe and eagle design over a montage of scenes from the war. In the center is a service form and an empty horseshoe in which on examples of similar broadsides the soldiers’ photograph is affixed. The service form certifies that Everett W. Patton enlisted in 1899 and served in the 38th Regiment. Similar broadsides—though with some differences in design—have on the bottom margin a 1901 copyright to Herbert E. Ellsworth and the My Boys Publishing Company and attribute the lithograph to Sanborn Vail & Co. both in San Francisco. This margin is missing from this copy. Overall a vivid and attractive piece. unknown‎

‎Civil War 23rd US Colored Infantry Desertion Wood M. Herbert‎

‎Letter from a White Officer Commanding an African-American Regiment in the Civil War to His Sister Discussing Pay and Her Husband’s Disappearance‎

‎Petersburg Virginia 1864. Single letter four 5 x 8 inch pages folded. Toning and some tears at folds overall excellent condition. M. Herbert Wood c. 1839–deceased was an officer of the 23rd Regiment United States Colored Infantry during the American Civil War. This regiment which consisted of African-American enlisted men with white officers was part of the 4th Division of the IX Corps organized at Camp Casey Virginia. Wood may also have served in the 25th Ohio regiment. A newspaper account from the time alleges that Wood a Mainer had married an Alabama woman who owned a considerable number of enslaved people and then “sold the negroes pocketed the proceeds turned abolitionist abandoned his wife and child and went back to Maine†before joining the Union army.1 Following the Civil War Wood purportedly asked President Andrew Johnson for a position but was denied after testifying that he would side with Congress over the President presumably concerning Reconstruction.

This letter to Wood’s sister Mollie is dated July 16 1864 after the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House and shortly before the Battle of the Crater in which the 23rd suffered significant casualties. Wood describes the Regiment’s dire financial situation apparently having gone months without pay:

“I cannot send any money to you in this letter for the simple reason that I have not any myself. We have not been paid since the last day of Feb and there is not an officer in the Regt that has 5 dollars but we shall be paid I hope soon it cannot be very long and I will then send you as much as you need.â€

He also informs Mollie of some sad intelligence about her husband:

“I do not wish or would not say one single word to injure your feelings but I very much fear that what I told you when we last met at New Berne has proved true. And that you are now a deserter’s wife. I have enquired of a great many officers who know him and to some who are Bro. Masons & have stated circumstances omitting name & place and all agree in saying that you will probably never hear from him again. We may all be mistaken however I hope we are.â€

The Civil War saw quite a high desertion rate on both sides though many men eventually returned to their posts voluntarily or otherwise.

1 “A Specimen of the Impeachment of Witnesses†The Louisville Daily Journal April 15 1868. unknown‎

‎[Civil War – Politics – Americans Abroad] Peck, Tracy‎

‎Letters from Friends to Tracy Peck Connecticuter Living Abroad‎

‎United States Germany and others 1869. Seven letters approximately twenty-six total pages most about 8 x 5 inches. One letter dated 1862; one dated 1863; two dated 1864; one dated 1869; two without date. Two of the letters are written in French untranslated. Generally very good or better with one showing water damage though legible. Tracy Peck 1838–1921 was born in Bristol Connecticut to a family who had been in the Hartford area since the 17th century. According to his obituary in The Classical Journal Vol. 17 No. 6 Peck studied at Yale and then abroad in Germany returned to the United States to teach Latin at Cornell and Yale and then went back to Europe again where he served as the Director of the American School of Classical Studies in Rome until his death.

Offered here is a group of letters from friends and family to Peck mainly written during the American Civil War when Peck was studying in Germany. The letters update Peck on the war politics and the activities and fortunes of various friends.

Many of Peck’s friends were academics and avoided involvement in the Civil War nearly as well as Peck himself did. Not all were so lucky though. A friend probably a Yale classmate writes from Massachusetts “with a notice of the death of F.S. Davisâ€:

“He died poor fellow in the hospital at Chattanooga about the middle of April. After leaving college he spent the first winter at home joined the ‘Memphis Southrons’ in March ‘62 He was at many battles and suffered untold hardships for one year when he died the first martyr of our class.†August 17 1863

Another friend Sheldon had just completed his service:

“He had been in several severe battles had been captured and taken to Richmond. While in service he met Bob Stiles who wouldn’t shake hands with him but tried to prove that unionism was oppressionâ€.

Though the war would continue for several more years the friend writes that zeal for it is already waning:

“The war goes on languidly. The enthusiasm has died out. Everyone expects the war to close by the south yielding to reasonable conditions. There is no apprehension felt as to the final issue. It has about ceased to be talked of.â€

That same friend would later travel abroad as well though his aspirations would be less intellectual than were Peck’s. He writes from Egypt where it is so hot that “Except for some luscious oranges which we got of a lightly-clad nymph we should have perished of thirst†about a comical scene:

“A tall muselman at one of the intermediate train stations had lain down his silk mantle and turning to the east gave through the prostrations prayers of his religion with great fervor and to the intense satisfaction of the ladies. Suddenly he touched his forehead to the ground leaped up. Their interest redoubled their attention with it when to my great amusement he squatted down unbuttoned his trousers began to pump ship in full view. The abrupt descent from prayer to pissing was too much for the females while I stifled a laugh in a cough my jacket handkerchief.†No Date

A later comment in the same letter where he describes being escorted up one of the pyramids and then “shouting ‘be quiet’ to the clamoring Egyptiansâ€â€”whom he also describes as a “rapacious broodâ€â€”is likewise revealing of his attitude towards the locals.

The latest letter in the group from Richard Harck is more high-minded. Harck inquires whether as Peck’s “foot . again walks on hallowed native soil†he has “acquired such a situation among the lumina of your country as your knowledge and learning deserve†July 30 1869. Harck is in Germany where there “is an utter stagnation in politics†as they approach the unification:

“The particularities and sectional ideas of the southern population and their sovereigns the antagony of the there powerfull clergy and the partly illiberal constitution and laws of the North German Union. Bismarck may be a great statesman and minster for foreign affairs but not a fit man to rule the interior of a constitutional state. . But he cannot stop the progress of the ever advancing ideas of liberalism and freedom; the powerful public opinion overwhelms him .â€.

Overall a look at the effects on ordinary lives of several important political upheavals of the mid-19th century. unknown‎

‎Women's History World War II Women's Army Corps VE Day Pacific Theater Bremer Mary J.; Miller June; Melotte John‎

‎Collection of a Women’s Army Corps Technician Concerning VE Day Reassignment to the Pacific Theater and Processions for Roosevelt and Eisenhower with Lyrical Descriptions of Paris on V-E Day‎

‎Paris France; and Washington D.C. 1945. Six 8 x 10 inch and smaller typed pages; one 4 x 5 inch card with two tickets; one twenty-six page 4 x 5.5 inch pamphlet; one six page 6 x 8.5 inch pamphlet; six 2.5 x 3.5 photographs and two 3 x 4.5 inch photographs. Of the printed matter most is affixed to paper some small tears and folds; overall excellent; photographs near fine. Mary J. Bremer 1917–2019 was a Technician fourth grade from Grant Township Nebraska. Her correspondents here include June Miller 1920–deceased an aviation cadet from Michigan and John Melotte 1919–deceased an artilleryman from Philadelphia. Bremer and Miller were members of the Women’s Army Corps WAC. Established in May of 1942 as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps the WAC converted to active duty in July of 1943. The women of WAC known as Wacs served in noncombatant roles across the various theaters of World War II.

Offered here is a small archive of Bremer’s documents and photographs relating to WAC: a few letters including a description of Paris the day after the Nazi surrender; two pamphlets including the War Department pamphlet Two down and One to go –; and a collection of photographs of Eisenhower’s victory parade and Roosevelt’s funeral procession.

On April 12 1945 President Roosevelt died of a stroke in Warm Springs Georgia. His body was returned to Washington two days later and a military procession escorted it from the train station to the White House. Two photographs of the funeral procession are included in the archive. One showing a woman at the start of a section of the parade is identified verso as “WACs led by Capt. Machenâ€.

The following month the Nazis surrendered. Bremer’s friend June Miller was stationed in Paris at the time. She wrote to Bremer the next day describing the celebration:
“It began the night before when we stood on the roof and watched the flares go off all over the city--just like the 4th of July; the Sacred Couer was blazing with lights and it looked like a miniature fairy-land. Last night all the famous old buildings including the Arc d’Triumph was all lit up the fountains in the parks at Concord in front of the Trocadero--they were all going and the kids were wading and splashing around having the time of their life. It was really something to see--something the French had been waiting a long time for. “Fini le guerre†they kept saying--the end of the war!â€

Miller also claims to have witnessed a bomber flying a celebratory loop through the Eiffel Tower:

“When we came out of the Trocadéro the fountains were on and what a sight that is. Looking down over the water that looks like a miniature waterfall to the Eiffel Tower at the bottom of a small hill. And if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I would never have believed that I saw a small bomber come through the bottom but that’s just what it did--and just did clear it too. The planes seemed to be going as wild as the people on the ground--they were so thick up there that pretty soon we thought surely something would happen.â€
In June Dwight Eisenhower returned from Europe and a homecoming parade was held for him in Washington D.C. Six photographs of this parade are included in the archive including a shot of his plane arriving at the airport and one where he is visible standing in the back of a Jeep.

Miller notes in her letter from Paris that “you wondered what was coming next; where we would go from here ‘cause in a sense there is still a war very definitely going onâ€. In fact John Melotte who seems to be Miller’s partner writes to Bremer that he “May be slated for that place they call the CBI but don’t tell June please. She does not want me to even mention the place in my letters so I let well enough alone†July 15 1945. Hostilities would continue in the CBI—the China-Burma-India theater—until September of that year.
The process by which soldiers were selected to be sent to the Asia-Pacific theater is laid out in the War Department pamphlet Two down and One to go –. The pamphlet reminds them that there are still “a couple of big jobs ahead†the primary one being to “crush†or “smash†the “Japs†and the second one being to occupy and police “conquered lands . until the peril of future aggression is gone.†It is a visually striking piece with illustrations in a bold black and red color palette; its cover is a reproduction of a caricature of Hitler Mussolini and Hirohito by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk.

Also included in the archive are a card from a friend with tickets to an American League baseball game; a humorous poem congratulating Wacs Ruth O.B. and Lenore I. Nier on new work assignments; and a Christmas 1945 WAC pamphlet with a dinner menu and list of WAC officers. The pamphlet assures the Wacs with a note from Colonel Kenton Cooley “Before another Christmas you all will have returned to civilian life and each of you will take with you my appreciation and my sincere admiration for a great job well done.â€
Of interest to scholars of women’s history especially in the military; and of the events leading up to the end of the Second World War. unknown‎

‎World War II Philippines Jesuits POWs Unknown Author‎

‎Letter Home from an American Missionary in the Philippines Describing the Japanese Takeover of Manila and His Subsequent Experience as a POW‎

‎Philippines 1945. Single letter; five 8.5 x 11†pages. Pinhole at top of first page missing final pages overall fine. The unknown author of this letter was an American Jesuit missionary in the Philippines who before the war was a novice living in Novaliches just outside Manila. He apparently had not written a significant letter home for a long time: in this letter written in April of what is likely 1945 he recounts his experiences from between December 8 1941 and early January of 1945 shortly before the civilian POW camp in which he was interned was liberated.

After the “Nips†bomb Pearl Harbor “A feverish month ensuedâ€:

“We proceeded to put the Community on ‘war-time alert’ with all hands occupied in digging air-raid trenches camouflaging our fortress-like house with a garlanded roof and mud-daubed walls; grain supplies were rushed in against the hour of need. We felt that all it might take Uncle Sam all of six months to put an end to the efforts of the pretender.â€
Around Christmas they evacuated to the Jesuit Ateneo Grade School then in Intramuros as the Japanese were advancing quickly towards Novaliches. Of course this did not prove to be much safer:

“When darkness came the Japs began their bombing of the Port Area. The bombs began to bounce off the pavement; bombers just skimming our roof-top on their way. We spent the night on our tummies and how we prayed. We thought that each decade of the beads would be our last this side of Purgatory. . When the church sto Domingo was hit the floor beneath us did some tricks and we were lifted up a bit and let down amidst the dust and smoke that poured in from above.â€

The missionaries try to “salvage important papers and other valuables from the Mission House prior to abandoning it to the fire which threatened the entire Walled City.†During this time they and “a thousand refugees†live in the Ateneo while “Dawn and night raids were supplied by the Japs with nary an American plane to say to them no†– American forces had taken a serious hit and withdrawn outside Manila. It was declared an open city before “the little scrawny but arrogant Japs came into the city and took over†in January of 1942.

The missionaries persuade the Japanese to let them stay in the Ateneo:

“We convinced them that it was impossible for us to give up the building because it belonged to the Pope and the Vatican State would hold us responsible. This argument with many ingenious trimmings enabled us to hold on to the Ateneo until June ‘43 when the main building was taken for a military hospitalâ€.

The author describes how despite what he calls his “partial internment†in Manila he is able to get around checkpoints by pretending to be Belgian. He finishes his studies and begins work at a Belgian convent in Paranaque in February of 1943 living between there and Manila:

“Incidentally none of this would have been possible if the Japs had gumption enough to find out that I was one of the hated Americans. . All vehicles were obliged to stop here a checkpoint at Baclaran and all passengers get down and file between a Jap sentry and a Filipino constabulary soldier to be searched for hidden arms etc. Since several Belgian Fathers not considered enemy aliens frequently passed this way I was able to walk through unmolested as an unoffending Belgian. . I carefully kept my helmet covering the tell-tale red arm-band which was worn on the arm furtherest away from the Jap. The Filipino would do no more than give me a knowing grin.â€

On July 10 1944 all of the American civilian POWs are taken to internment camps in Santo Tomas and then Los Baños. In Los Baños the POWs cut wood repair roads and farm. Los Baños would be liberated in February of 1945; the author paints a slightly confusing picture of the leadup to this:

“Conditions generally ‘worsened’ when on Jan. 8th about the time that the American troops landed at Mindero an island just across from Batangas the Japs got jittery believing that the Yanks were going to do the obvious and cross over the bay to Batangas and they the Japs at Batanga decamped! ‘You are free but remain in camp until the Americans come. Outside your camp Japanese troops will shoot any who leave.’ Great was the joy in Mudville. From nowhere came flag poles on which we quickly unfurled American and British flags .; a short-wave radio was set up and we enjoyed daily Frisco broadcasts .â€

It sounds as if the missionary was reporting contrary to the usual narrative of the Los Baños raid that the Japanese had essentially given up control of the camp and were like the prisoners simply waiting for the Americans to come get their people. Perhaps something further happened in the nearly two intervening months; however the remainder of the letter is missing.

Of interest to scholars of modern Jesuit history and of the civilian POW experience during the Second World War. unknown‎

‎[Mexican Border War - Cartography - Personal Narratives] Gaffney, Samuel; Rice, CA., et al. C. A.‎

‎Scrapbook Documenting the Mexican Border Service Campaigns of 1916-1917 with an Unrecorded Map of the Campaign in Hidalgo County in 1916‎

‎VP 1917. Scrapbook measuring 15 ½ x 10 ½ inches. With forty leaves most with newspaper clippings and varied ephemera attached. Boards detached contents generally fine. Laid in is a blueprint map entitled Map of Part of Hidalgo County Texas Showing Line of March in my Mexican Border Service 1916. Made from Survey Notes taken on the march by Corp. C.A. Rice 74 Inf. N.G.U.S. Buffalo N.Y. Armory. Map measuring 33 ½ x 14 ¾ inches irregularly shaped and apparently complete. Very Good. A scrapbook documenting the military service of 1st Sergeant Samuel Gaffney of the 74th National Guard New York in the Mexican Border Service. Gaffney documents the campaign in great detail through printed matter - with each of the forty leaves containing material affixed including panoramic photographs advertisements from local businesses along the routes programs from entertainment offered to the troops military orders and official correspondence and many affixed newspaper articles and photographs.

The scrapbook is most notable for the inclusion of an unrecorded map by Charles A. Rice the Buffalo native who would eventually map the campaign in larger fashion in a map entitled Map Showing Lines and March and Border Patrols in my Mexican Border Service 1916-1917. The map here just showing the route through Hidalgo County is unrecorded. The larger map - which was produced as souvenirs for the other members of the 74th - is quite scarce as well with five copies known to exist per OCLC with two different numbers. This blueprint map which appears to be complete cartographically and missing only the ornamental border on one portion shows the route taken early in the campaign in 1916. The Buffalo native Rice 1885-1931 who would eventually settle in Texas after the conflict also wrote a history of the 74th during the campaign. Rice published the maps and memoir himself. The map shows the route in great detail showing the location of wells farms roads and identifying landowners. Water quality and abundance is understandably a common theme in Rice’s notes. Some notes show the location of bandits smugglers and the like. We find no other examples of blueprint maps by Rice.

Other highlights from the scrapbook include seven panoramic photographs of the 74th encamped at Pharr; a broadside advertisement for the shop of Agustin Acevedo in Pharr listing prices of goods; a handbill advertising the 74th’s Minstrels and Great Entertainment show on September 16 1916; an advertisement for a production entitled Glorious Liberty at the National Theatre in Pharr; two circulars instructing troop movement issued by Headquarters Brownsville District; several postcards with songs about the campaign; several snapshots; a mounted albumen photograph of troops at rest with the notation “Corp Frederick Paid†verso; a typed poem entitled “Home Again†and a notebook page describing his activities from January 1917 onward; and a thanksgiving menu for 1916 for the holiday spent at Pharr. The remainder of the scrapbook is composed of affixed newspaper clippings which provide extensive information on the 74th collected in a single volume.

Overall a significant scrapbook with much information to glean for students of the 74th’s activities with the map providing a unique cartographic reference of the early days of the campaign. unknown‎

‎[Con Artists - Cartography - War Correspondence - California] De Beaufort, Jack or Jacques‎

‎Collection of Maps Diaries Manuscripts and Photographs Documenting the Life and Work of the Con Artist War Correspondent and Cartographer Jack or Jacques de Beaufort aka “The Dude Reporter†with a Focus on His Cartographic and Literary Activities in Mid-Century Los Angeles‎

‎Europe and California 1950. Includes two small diaries from 1901 and 1917 with sporadic entries a large photo album measuring 14 x 11 with appx. 400 small photographs from 1906-1909 attached to album pages most measuring 3 x 2 as well as a few larger format images laid in. With 100 plus pages of typed pages including retained correspondence story ideas and various other manuscripts. With eleven maps produced for his “Of Men and Maps†series including five copies of a large map entitled “Whither Russia†in varied states and in large sizes up to 30 by 36 inches and a handful of small ephemeral pieces. Generally near fine condition with the exception of the album which is missing its rear board and has some pages loose and torn. Very Good. J.M. de Beaufort a war correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph and New York American during World War I recounted his wartime adventures in the 1917 book "Behind the German Veil: A Record of a Journalistic War Pilgrimage." Originally arriving in Chicago in 1909 he married a steel magnate's daughter and pursued a career in show business. However by 1912 he had gone through a divorce and transitioned to newspaper work earning the moniker of the "Dude Reporter." Originally born in the Netherlands as Jacques Albert Uilenbroek he was thought to be a deserter. He spent the latter part of his life in the United States apparently jailed in San Francisco for a stint in the 1920s and eventually settled in Los Angeles.
Offered here is an interesting smattering of material from the life of the mysterious De Beaufort which bookends his most unusual career and life with a large visual photographic record of his life in Europe as a young man and over a hundred pages of manuscript material from late in his life with a highlight being several maps in draft form for an apparently unpublished project called “Of Men and Maps.†As a group the material shows the work of an ex-con artist and war correspondent trying to regain his form while living in Los Angeles. He was still writing as a “Special Correspondent†at this point though the title seems to have been fully honorary. Also included are two small pocket journals with sporadic notations from his life in Europe in 1900 and in 1917. In its entirety the group gives an interesting visual and manuscript record of a literary fraudulent and imaginative transatlantic life and intellect.
The cartographic highlight of the group is several iterations of a large map called “Whither Russia†in varied forms which show an interesting interpretation of the sphere of influence of the USSR and its growth from 1939 to 1946. Also included are two drafts of a map of Operation Market-Garden in the Netherlands in 1944 an unidentifed tactical map of a military battlefield a map called “Middle East Jackpot†showing the division of territory between the Allied and Axis powers a map called “Dawn’s Early Light some reproduced small format maps from the De Beaufort’s and a small map called “Gifts from Yalta.†De Beaufort was working on these maps for a column called “Of Men Maps and Memories†that was published in the East Los Angeles Tribune. He also sent the columns out in newsletter form from his address at 1635 N. Ogden Drive in Los Angeles.
The collection of manuscripts drafts and retained correspondence tackle a range of subjects perhaps most interestingly those detailing De Beaufort’s creative process - drafts of stories lists of ideas for stories and letters. His over the top style is on display in a lot of the writings some of which are of unknown origin and purpose. The documents contain correspondence between De Beaufort and Edwin Pauley the oil man and presidential advisor. In one untitled essay he asks himself the question “What has been your most thrilling experience†and his reply is “ Silly questions. Who or at least what newspaperman of some 25 turbulent years standing - and falling - could answer such a question. A reporter’s life has a thousand thrills. There was that rainy day in Marcy 1915 in the fortress of Loetzen when I stood face to face with Hindenburg. Hm yes that was quite a thrill…†De Beaufort was entrenched in the Los Angeles journalistic scene at this point and the documents show the degree to which he relied on his former glories to attempt various career revitalizations endeavors.
The album of photographs from 1906-1909 over 400 in total give a visual record of the young Uilenbroek’s life in Europe. The star of the collection is his bulldog Bob who travels throughout Europe with him and eventually comes to America by 1907. Mary who we presume to be his future wife is featured heavily in the images. It is unclear whether he was working at this point the images show affluent young people and their dog in varied cities and are purely of a personal nature. Other photographs laid in are relics from his war correspondent period. The loose photographs and ephemera are a mix of portraits from different periods from his life including two pictures of Sydney Turing Barlow Lawson one signed by his widow. The journals are sporadically filled and hard to decipher though one legible passage says “drinking all day.â€
Overall the group gives evidence of this intriguing life and is the only extant group of material relating to Beaufort to our knowledge with the exception of a single journal from his time in Belgium during WWI that was sold at Bonhams and is still available in the trade as of this writing. unknown‎

‎[Japanese-Americana - World War Two - 442nd Infantry Regiment] Hamada, Harry‎

‎‘Go For Broke’ / 442nd Combat Team Song‎

‎Hattiesburg: Earl M. Finch 1944. Sheet music measuring 12 x 9 inches 4 pp. Signature of a Nabuko Hayashida on front cover. Slight tears at fold some toning two small pinholes very good overall quite attractive. Very Good. In Hawaii in May 1942 a battalion of Nisei volunteers was assembled for service in World War Two despite earlier failures of efforts to recruit Japanese-Americans due to the Army’s labeling of Nisei recruits as 4-C enemy aliens. Designated as the 100th Infantry Battalion they were deployed to North Africa in June 1943 integrating with the 34th Division in active combat. Their subsequent deployment to Italy in September 1943 exposed them to intense warfare earning them the moniker of the "Purple Heart Battalion" due to their notably high casualty rate.

In January 1943 the U.S. War Department officially declared the establishment of the segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team RCT which was comprised of Nisei volunteers originating from Hawaii and the mainland. The culmination of this initiative transpired in June 1944 when the 442nd RCT merged forces with the 100th Infantry Battalion in Europe subsequently absorbing the latter into its structure. The notable achievements of Nisei soldiers in combat operations prompted the reinstatement of the draft in January 1944 specifically targeting Nisei detainees to augment the ranks of the 442nd. Over time the 442nd RCT expanded to encompass the 2nd 3rd and 100th Battalions; the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion; the 232nd Engineering Company; the 206th Army Band; Anti-Tank Company; Cannon Company; and Service Company.

Offered here is a very scarce piece of sheet music entitled “Go For Broke†which was written by the Hawaiian musician Harry Hamada reflecting the slogan of the 442nd and performed by Shelby and others during the war as part of efforts to boost morale. Hamada would feature in the 1951 movie “Go For Broke†as Masami alongside several other veterans of the 442nd. This publication of “Go For Broke†is from 1944 seven years before the movie’s release. The piece is dedicated to Colonel C.W. Pence. Hamada was a Hawaiian musician who performed with a band called the Shelby Hawaiians or the Shelby Serenaders. They performed as early as 1943. The Hattiesburg Mississippi merchant Earl M. Finch who ran an Army and Navy store close to Camp Shelby befriended Hamada and other members of the 442nd and acted as a sponsor for the group and eventually published this version despite his business being a dry goods merchant house and not a publishing house. The group with the support of Finch performed throughout the country to lift morale. At some point Hamada penned this composition likely in 1944 as we find no reference to it in 1943 articles and Finch published it - Hamada’s composition would become the theme song of the 442nd and Hamada would perform at the Halloran General Hospital in New York and the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. in 1944 likely performing this composition. Another composition called “Go For Broke†exists as well and it is unclear to what degree Hamada’s work caught on among the regiment.

We find two records of Finch’s published version of the composition one listed as part of an online remembrance of the 442nd by the Smithsonian Institution https://americanhistory.si.edu/explore/stories/day-remembrance-70-years-after-executive-order-9066 which appears to have been on loan from the National Japanese American Historical Society and another copy held at Stanford though not listed in OCLC. Finch’s story is also interesting and is the subject of a remembrance on a 100th Battalion History page online https://www.100thbattalion.org/history/stories/earl-finch/. We find no copies listed in OCLC. Overall a very scarce piece of Japanese-American wartime history. Earl M. Finch unknown‎

‎[Mexican-American War - Correspondence - Food] Clutter, George‎

‎Lengthy Letter Describing the Food and Scenery of Vera Cruz Written by Captain George Clutter of Wheeling West Virginia Captain of the the ‘Mountain Boys of Monongolia.’‎

‎Vera Cruz 1847. Folded letter to Wheeling Virginia with learly struck two-line datestamp with "Paid 10" manuscript rate and blue "Steam" handstamp of New Orleans on 1847 with an unusual “Steam†marking applied in New Orleans. Fine condition. Fine. A descriptive and interesting letter from Captain George W. Clutter of Wheeling Virginia describing the scenes and food in Vera Cruz in detail. Clutter had enlisted a detachment of thirty-two men in early 1847 in Monongalia County for service in the war who would eventually become known as the “Mountain Boys of Monongalia.†Clutter was promoted to the captaincy upon the resignation of John Tyler. The company sailed in June of 1847 on the Brig “Tuckahoe†from Old Point Comfort to Point Isabel where they marched to join General Taylor’s forces.

This interesting letter written by Clutter from Vera Cruz describes the city and cuisine of Vera Cruz in detail. He writes “I am now boarding at the best Hotel in the city - it is called "Bells Stage House'. It is kept by a German lady in great grandeur. The quantity of fruit here is astonishing. Oranges are for sale at about the rate apples would sell in the Wheeling market. I only wish I could send you and the children some of them - such ones as you never eat in the United States as it would be impossible to carry them so far without rotting.

As we get dinner here at 3 o'clock and no such thing as supper is known I stepped out this evening and obtained a 'cup of chocolate' and 'toast'. If an American or rather United States cook could taste such chocolate as the Mexicans make they never would attempt making the article again - and it is not so much in the simple making of the chocolate but it's in preparing it at the start - for every family even the provost understands making the article from the Cocoa.†Clutter offers additional details on troop movements and logistics of the campaign. Other letters by Clutter during the period are held at the West Virginia Regional History Center at WVU.

Full contents follow:

Vera Cruz Mexico
Thursday Sept. 30th 1847

When I wrote to you from the Brazos I felt in rather a bad humor and as I have arrived at this splendid city the first splendid place I have found in Mexico I will endeavor to write to you more at length than I did from the above named place. We left the Brazos at 5 o'clock P.M. on Monday on board the Steamship Ohio and without ever seeing the sun once during the voyage arrived here today Thursday about 11 o'clock A.M. - truly a quick trip. None of our Regiment except those who were favored with a passage on the Ohio in Company with Brig. Genl. Cushing are here yet. Those of our Regiment here are as follows: Lieut. Col. Withers Capt. Clay & his Company and Capt. Campbell & your humble servant who came upon the sick list. I am much improved since the commencement of the voyage and will with a day or two's rest be able to take up the line of march by the time the Regiment gets ready to move forward to join Genl. Scott. I must explain here the balance of the Regiment is coming in ships which may detain them two or three days in which event I will have become rested. I am now boarding at the best Hotel in the city - it is called "Bells Stage House'.

If an American or rather United States cook could taste such chocolate as the Mexicans make they never would attempt making the article again - and it is not so much in the simple making of the chocolate but it's in preparing it at the start - for every family even the provost understands making the article from the Cocoa.

In this City may be seen all the fashionable fine buildings and streets to be found in any city of the United States. Also all the various fancy and other goods now in the cities of the North & East can be found here.

I have not yet found another horse since my arrival but must try and get one tomorrow. I hope my friend Pollock will receive the Mexican roan 'J.B.' which I sent him from Brazos. From hard usage he is not in very good order at present but with little care will be a very useful horse. Don't you ever ask the privilege of riding him however. Mind I know him well.

As you have heard before this Genl. Scott is in the City of Mexico having sustained a very heavy loss in getting there. We expect to have considerable fighting between here and the City of Mexico ourselves. Time however will reveal all things.

The soreness in my legs which I complained of is better but I fear exercise will cause it to return. What it will terminate in I am unable to say at present.

I received a letter from you at this place today which was read with the usual interest notwithstanding it was written on the 13th August 17 days previous to the last one received at Sabinito which was dated 30th August.

I have just bought five Vera Cruz papers which I will send you. They are half Mexican which half you can dispose of as you see proper. By the bye Mr. Fleeson promised to send you the Matamoros Flag regular. Tell me if you get it.

Oct. 1st 1847

This morning I have been all over the city. It would take me a month to describe all the curiosities I have beheld. I will save that for a private chat some long evening after my return.

I would like to have you Dear little Ada to examine and see the curiosities to be seen. When papa comes home he will bring you some of them.

My love to Sarah Ann. I would write longer to her had I time. My love to all my friends & acquaintances.

I am Dearest Sarah
your loving husband
Geo. W. Clutter

to
Sarah M. Clutter. unknown‎

‎Two Partially Printed Documents by the United States Office of Board of Claims Relating to the Service of Thomas Massey An Ex-Enslaved Soldier in the 9th Regiment of the USCT 1864‎

‎Baltimore and Worcester County 1865. Two documents affixed at top edge measuring 9 x 6 ¾ and 14 x 8 ½ inches. Tape repairs at folds some with heavy clear tape else excellent good condition overall. With the embossed stamp of the Board of Claims to first document and two revenue stamps affixed. Good. A pair of documents relating to the emancipation through military service of Thomas Massey of Maryland and compensation to his enslaver Joseph Godrey of Worcester County Virginia. Massey enlisted in the 9th Regiment of the USCT in 1864 and in accordance with Order 329 of the U.S. War Department Godfrey received compensation which was not to exceed $300. The present documents “To facilitate recruiting in the states of Maryland Missouri Tennessee and Kentucky the War Department issued General Order No. 329 on October 3 1863. Section 6 of the order stated that if any citizen should offer his or her slave for enlistment into the military service that person would "if such slave be accepted receive from the recruiting officer a certificate thereof and become entitled to compensation for the service or labor of said slave not exceeding the sum of three hundred dollars upon filing a valid deed of manumission and of release and making satisfactory proof of title." https://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/blacks-civil-war/article.html The order was meant to provide financial incentives to enslavers following the Emancipation Proclamation earlier that year. We find a record of a Thomas Massey from Worcester County born in 1855 which would raise the possibility that he enlisted at age 9 or that the Thomas Massey in question in these documents is not findable in the genealogical references we checked. unknown‎

‎Ohio 1918. Silver gelatin photograph in glass-fronted frame image measures 24 ¼ x 6 â…ž inches. Matted and framed not examined out of frame. The 317th Engineer’s Band was a part of the 317th Engineer Regiment an element of the 92nd Division which was composed of over 15000 African-American soldiers from across the country. The 92nd was one of two African-American regiments to fight in the war the other being the 93rd and was unique in that it was under the command of the United States. The 317th Engineer Regiment was organized in November 1917 at Camp Sherman Ohio several months before this photograph was taken and saw action in Europe as part of the 92nd. Camp Sherman was the third largest training camp in the country at the time with over 2000 buildings capable of housing 40000 men and 12000 horses. As well as being the training site for units of the 92nd also known as the Buffalo Division it served as the training site entire 83rd 84th 95th and 96th divisions. It later became a trade school.

The 317th Engineer’s Band performed locally around Chillicothe and at other military functions eventually becoming known according to a contemporary newspaper account as one of the best bands in the army. They traveled to Indianapolis to perform in March of 1918. A New York Times article from 1918 mentions them briefly and describes them as ‘famous’ but does not elaborate. They performed at the ‘Colored Club’ in Chillicothe a social club for African-American servicemen in a converted hotel. We find no other record of this image. unknown‎

‎[Civil War - New Hampshire] [Copperheads, or Peace Democrats]‎

‎Copperheads in Council! Declarations of the Leaders. Read and Ponder What They Say! Anti-Copperhead Broadside Produced for the 1863 Election‎

‎New Hampshire: Printer Unknown 1863. First Edition. Printed broadside 16 ½ x 11 ½ inches archivally mounted and matted. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper margin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Franklin Pierce remained politically active upon his return to New Hampshire following his presidency advocating for the Democratic cause and generally opposing the Civil War and Lincoln’s policies. This scarce pro-Union anti-slavery broadside printed for the 1863 New Hampshire elections which happened March 12 takes aim at Pierce and his fellow Democrats repeating the unfounded claim first made in 1862 by William Seward that Pierce belonged to the secret Knights of the Golden Circle the secret society formed with the goal of forming a new territory out of the CSA Mexico Central America and the Caribbean. There was never evidence that Pierce had any involvement in the KGC though the society had members in southern parts of some Union states such as Indiana Ohio Illinois and Missouri.

The broadside printed for the March 12 elections quotes heavily from Pierce as well as the other Democrat candidates and party officials who were either running for office in New Hampshire or involved in politics a group which included Ira Eastman John Goerge Josiah Minot Thomas Treadwell Daniel Marcy William Burns and George Stevens. The broadside includes an engraving of coiled snakes each with these politicians named and the caption “et id omne genus.†Eastman the Democratic candidate for governor won the popular vote but lacked the constitutional majority necessary for election. Marcy was successful in his bid for the First District. “Men of New Hampshire!†the broadside asks: “Will you Vote the Ticket Made up by Such Men†with the final line imploring to “Please paste up in a Conspicuous Place.†

Overall an uncommon survival from the 1863 elections. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper magin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Quite scarce with OCLC locating two copies only at the Huntington Library and the New York Historical Society. Printer Unknown unknown‎

‎[Civil War] [Women] [Cushman, Pauline] Sutterley & Co‎

‎Carte-de-Visite of Pauline Cushman‎

‎Virginia City: Sutterley and Co 1867. Albumen photograph on mount 4 x 2 ½ inches. Pauline Cushman was an actress and one of the most successful spies for the Union Army. She ingratiated herself with the Confederate army by toasting Jefferson Davis after one of her performances. She was eventually caught and sentenced to death by hanging. She was spared only due to the arrival of the Union Army.

After the war she toured the country giving lectures and performances recounting her experiences as a spy. She eventually headed west marrying in 1872 in San Francisco and eventually working a range of jobs in Arizona Territory Texas and eventually back in San Francisco where she died in 1893 at age 60 from a morphine overdose.

We find no record of this portrait which was taken by the Sutterley brothers James and Clement in their Virginia City Nevada studio somewhere between 1864 and 1867. The Sutterleys operated out of their studio on the Union block of Virginia City for five years before dissolving their partnership in 1867. It is likely that the portrait was taken during one of Cushman’s tours throughout the region during these years.

A beautifully preserved example in very good condition with a small chip to upper margin and some fading. Though Cushman ostensibly would have sold cartes-de-visite in support of her touring few survive on the market today. Sutterley and Co unknown‎

‎[Mexico] [Pastry War] Hersant, M.‎

‎Signed manuscript report and chart from Hersant Consul de France a San Luis Potosí and Tampico to Comte de Rigny Minister of the Navy‎

‎Mexico 1833. First Edition. Mexico: May 23 1833. Letter and chart on watermarked single folio sheets approx. 13 x 16-½ inches letter: 3 pp.; chart: 2 pp.;. Near Fine. Rare first-hand documentation of the growing trade tensions that eventually led to the French-Mexican “Pastry War†of 1838. Consul Hersant’s gossipy report surveys the “commercial movement of the port of Tampico since it’s opening in 1824 until the end of 1832.†Hersant complains to his superiors that Mexican trade with the US and England far outpaces France; even the Hanseatic League has become a problem. The Consul includes a hand-drawn table tallying foreign ships and the weight of goods by country a visual aid supporting his claim that French trade lags considerably behind other partners.

Ultimately it is civil disorder that most disturbs the Consul; that is smuggling assisted by the Mexican customs officers themselves: "se fait impunément et avec l'aide des douaniers eux-mêmes et peut porter au double la quantité de marchandises qui entrent du dehors." Indeed the early years of the Mexican Republic were marked by a notable lack of governmental accountability toward foreign governments or private property owners as various internal parties struggled for power. This disregard eventually led King Louis-Philippe’s government to sue for damages against Mexico on behalf of French citizens doing business there. The most famous claimant was a pastry chef who claimed his shop had been looted. In 1838 when the amount went unpaid the French invaded Veracruz and blockaded Mexico’s Atlantic ports beginning the so-called Pastry War.

References to Hersant can be found in other histories of the French attempt to gain ground in Mexico e.g. establishing alternative shipping passages inland to compete with North American traders. Overall a scarce pair of documents in excellent condition with minimal normal wear. unknown‎

‎[Spanish-American War] [Massachusetts] Second Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry‎

‎Forty-Nine Photographs of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Most Identified‎

‎Massachusetts 1898. The 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers mustered into service in May 1898 and within a month saw significant action in Cuba at the Battle of El Caney. They were one of three volunteer units from Massachusetts to see action on the Santiago Campaign. The regiment was inexperienced - 55% were untrained recruits. The lack of experience combined with their rifles giving off a very visible black smoke led to a heavy casualties in the Battle of El Caney. After an encampment near Santiago de Cuba in which a large number of the soldiers became ill with disease - estimates are as high as 65% - the regiment returned home in August. Historians have noted that soldier demographics changed considerably from the Civil War to the Spanish American war as the smaller number of troops and the lack of a draft led to a more enthusiastic army with higher morale.

The photographs in this group are interesting as a typological grouping of images of untrained soldiers and also for their historical value as most contain identifications to versos. The highlight of the group is forty-four uniformly mounted portraits of soldiers nearly all identified measuring 3 ¾ x 2 ½ inches each. Other photographs include a large portrait of Captain Frederick E. Pierce with the blindstamp of Goldsmith Studio Springfield Massachusetts and a 3 ¼ x 3 ¼ inch square card of Capt. Pierce in Camp Turner. Also included are two slightly larger photographs on similar mounts.

Overall an interesting group. Good condition overall with assorted chips and wear. unknown‎

‎[Civil War] [Folk Art] Barber, Alexander‎

‎A Civil War Soldier’s Carved Wooden Folk Art Memorial to his Service in the Union Army c. 1863‎

‎N.p. 1863. Dark carved wood 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches with bone border and star inlays in corners an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles.

The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber’s metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown‎

Other photographs show women’s fitness activities at the Lakewood Community Center also in Cleveland. There are several examples of similar local efforts in support of the national “Keep Fit for Victory†Campaign.

The photographs show women in a range of activities - basketball stretching calisthenics volleyball etc. Some of the photographs are graphically hand-painted by the editorial staff. Most pictures have corresponding articles pasted onto versos. The images are generally quite playful in nature - perhaps because it was early in the war or because the pictures were intended as morale boosters. A generally quite well-preserved group in excellent condition except for the above-mentioned editorial marks. unknown‎

‎Billings, John [Civil War]‎

‎Personal Photograph Album of John Billings Author of Hardtack and Coffee Kept During the Civil War‎

‎Massachusetts 1860. 9 x 6 inches. Polished calf decorative covers. Nineteen pages with 55 Carte-de-Visite portraits. Good. A carte-de-visite portrait album kept by Billings during the Civil War. Notation before index reads: “This album was sent me at my order from Philadelphia and was received while our army lay at Brandy Station in the winter of 1863-1864. I think! Many of the pictures I carried with me throughout nearly my whole term of service. This is true of these on the first 17 pages. The others have been inserted since the war.†

A particularly noteworthy artifact. Hardtack and Coffee is one of few books on soldiers’ everyday life and this album would have been quite significant for Billings. He discusses photographs twice in the book as being among the dearest objects soldiers kept with them. Per Billings’ own note on the endpapers there are seventeen portraits present that he personally kept with him during the first part of the war before adding them to this album in 1863. These include: his parents several cousins and various acquaintances. The remainder of the portraits were added later. Notable subjects include two portraits of Billings himself and two portraits of his future wife Mary Phillips Cotton Whitney.

Unfortunately portraits of Billings' compatriots are missing. Several portraits of members of the Massachusetts 10th were removed in the 1980s by an unknown person and framed with the subjects’ identities and the photos removals noted on the mounts. Several other pages lack portraits though it is unclear whether or not each space in the album was originally filled. The photographs that remain are in very good condition. The album itself is worn with tears and chips to spine and general wear. First leaf repaired with crude tape. Still a significant piece despite the flaws. unknown‎

‎[World War One][15th Infantry, Known as the "Harlem Hellfighters"]International Film Service / Underwood and Underwood, Photogra‎

‎Two Press Photographs Relating to the 15th Infantry‎

‎New York: Underwood and Underwood 1919. First Edition. Gelatin silver prints 7 ¾ x 5 ½ inches each on 11 ½ x 7 inch black paper mounts captioned with affixed text. Very Good. Two WWI-era press photographs related to the Negro 15th Infantry Division of the New York National Guard a.k.a. the 369th US Infantry Regiment and their white commander Colonel William Hayward. One photograph shows the division on parade in New York following their return from combat duty in France in 1919 the other is a well-known image of Hayward who organized the all-black unit and served as its leader. Fighting for a record-breaking 191 consecutive days alongside French troops in the trenches the regiment became known as the “Harlem Hellfighters.†

The opportunity for African-Americans to serve in WWI arose from the Selective Service Act of 1917 which drafted all men between the ages of twenty-one and thirty. Special segregated training camps were established and units were formed. The US National Archives states that 200000 African-Americans served in Europe during WWI but only 42000 saw combat. When the 15th Infantry arrived in France in 1918 Hayward was committed to the idea that his unit would fight on the front lines. After General Pershing refused to integrate them with the full US army Hayward pushed for another assignment under French command. Unlike many other segregated divisions in WWI the 15th aka 369th was eventually sent to the trenches. Its members' distinguished service brought honor and fame. Before leaving the US in 1917 the regiment had not been allowed to participate in the New York National Guard’s farewell parade. When they returned victorious Hayward ensured they were publicly honored.

Both with various press stamps to versos. Small closed tear of about a half inch to upper edge of parade picture good overall. Hayward portrait with some rippling at edges very good overall. Underwood and Underwood unknown‎

‎[Civil War - Zouave Regiments]][Vernacular Photography]‎

‎An Unusual Outdoor Sixth Plate Tintype of a Zouave Soldier Possibly from New York‎

‎New York 1860. An unusual image of a Zouave soldier in an outdoor setting holding a horse. During the Civil War roughly 95 Zouave regiments formed adopting the names uni-forms and sometimes fighting styles of the North African Zouave brigades. The bulk - about 70 of the regiments - fought for the Union cause. We were unable to determine anything else about this soldier though the image was found in a New York estate. New York was home to two of the most famous Zouave brigades the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry and the 11th New York Volunteer In-fantry. A nearly fine image with a slight crease housed in a full case. unknown‎
