New York October 25th 1938. 1938. Very good. - One-and-a-quarter pages with over 150 words penned on both sides of 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. The novelist and political activist Ralph Bates writes to the author John Hyde Preston praising his novel "The Liberals". He begins by referring to a rally likely the "Save Czechoslovakia" protest against the Munich Agreement which took place in New York City on October 1 1938: "I'm very sorry - by the time you receive this I shall be on my way to Mexico. I would have attended the Rally gladly". He goes on to praise Preston's novel "Congratulations on The Liberals - I enjoyed it greatly". He goes on to mention how he found the girl "very convincing" and spends some time writing about the "imagery". Signed in full "Ralph Bates". Folded several times with minor creases to the top corners. Else near fine. <p>The English novelist writer journalist and political activist Ralph Bates 1899-2000 is best known for his writings on pre-Civil War Spain. He served with the British Army during the First World War training others to prepare for poison gas attacks. Bates joined the British Communist Party after the war. He became disillusioned following the Soviet invasion of Finland in 1939 and publicly condemned the Communists in the New Republic. Bates and his wife were in the Pyrenees at the outset of the Spanish Civil War and he joined the government forces. His allegiances kept shifting and though he blamed the POUM and Trotskyists for the Disorders in Catalonia he founded the XV International Brigade's newspaper "The Volunteer for Liberty" and escorted British Communist leader Harry Pollitt when he visited Madrid. Bates frequently traveled to the U.S. and Mexico and in the 1950s refused to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Bates was the author of "The Fields of Paradise" and "The Dolphin in the Wood".<p>The novelist essayist historian and critic John Hyde Preston 1906-1980 one of the "lost writers of 1930s Connecticut" was the author of numerous books including "A Gentleman Rebel: The Exploits of Anthony Wayne" "The Liberals" "Revolution 1776" "Portrait of a Woman" etc. New York, October 25th, [1938]. unknown
