‎World War II Photographica‎

‎Extensive Archive of Almost 365 Original Photographs Taken by an American G.I. on Okinawa Just After the Japanese Surrender‎

‎Okinawa 1946. Overall very good. 363 original photographs most 3.25 x 4.5 or 3.75 x 5 inches. Loose photos some curling to approximately half of group. About 200 images neatly removed from previous album or other housing with adhesive remnants on blank versos. Pencil annotations with dates and locations on a substantial minority of photographs. Occasional minor wear some fading to several photos but mostly clean crisp images. A remarkable and large collection of over 360 vernacular photographs taken by an American soldier on Okinawa and several other outlying islands in the Amami and Tokara chains following the final surrender of Japanese forces and the end of World War II. The images present here depict a wide array of subjects including the destruction on Okinawa the building of American military camps cleanup and disarmament of Japanese military installations remnants of local villages and Japanese residents attempting to resume their lives.

One of the most fascinating and extensive series of images present here documents the disarmament and deconstruction of Japanese island military installations carried out by their own soldiers still in uniform. Numerous photographs depict soldiers carrying bombs arms and equipment out of bunkers and other installations being dismantled under the supervision of American forces. Many images incongruously depict American and Japanese officers deep in consultation or mixed groups of enlisted men working or milling about together. Several shots show Japanese soldiers Japanese soldiers posed at stations in the bunkers as if they were still on duty.

A second significant run of images present here depict life such as it was for surviving residents of the islands. Many photographs show rebuilding in progress men and women scavenging materials and farmers working fields and harvesting hay and grasses. Others document aspects of town life -- small gatherings of villagers children playing men returning from a fishing expedition women washing clothes in an irrigation ditch. A few photos show a group of women from the local red light district.

Overall these images give an excellent and detailed view of the situation on the outlying islands of Japan just after the conclusion of the war. The photographer clearly had license or orders to travel fairly widely and his photographs are taken from varied locations on Okinawa and several other islands south of the Japanese mainland including Tokunoshima Amami Oshima and Takarajima. The landscape on these as it appeared in the direct aftermath of the war is extensively documented.

Although the photographer is not identified he is clearly the subject of several portraits posed in front of military airplanes on ships with groups of soldiers and with local Japanese people. The images display a good sense of composition and a keen eye for interesting subject matter and given the access that many of these subjects required it seems clear that the photographer had some training or professional experience and was employed by the military. Nevertheless 170 of the images are clearly his own personal vernacular photography thereby making the scope and extent of this group all the more remarkable. An excellent and sizable group of postwar Pacific photographs and an outstanding visual document of Okinawa soon after one of the bloodiest and most desperate island campaigns of the war. unknown books‎

‎New Caledonia 1945. Very good. Two issues 16pp. total. Old horizontal fold. Light tanning. Two Spring 1945 issues of this rare U.S. armed forces newspaper published in New Caledonia in the South Pacific Ocean both full of momentous war news. The first dated April 15 leads with the headline "F.D.R. Makes Last Trip to Washington" and provides an account of the return of Roosevelt's body from New York to the White House. A second sizable article reports on major Allied advances in Europe and a large map printed on the third page shows American British and Russian forces closing in on Berlin. Several other articles provide accounts of American victories against the Japanese in the Philippines and Okinawa and of bombing raids on Tokyo. The second issue dated may 5 is headlined "Allies Mop Up In Reich" and documents the collapse of the German armies in the days before the final surrender and is further highlighted by a cartoon depicting Hitler being stuck outside the gates of Hell until his death is confirmed by the Allied command. This issue also contains items of local interest such as scheduled social events for that Saturday night and the program for Sunday church services. OCLC locates only a scattered run of the periodical at the U.S. Army War College Library and copies of the May 8 1945 V-E Day issue at UC Davis Western Michigan and the University of Georgia as well as single issues at four Australian and New Zealand institutions. unknown books‎

Historical Background: Music played a prominent role in the American Civil War. On the battlefield and in the camps it boosted morale and released tensions. On the homefront it helped individuals and families express political sentiments grief and longing. Music entertained and often carried political religious and social messages. "The Year of Jubilee or Kingdom has Come!" was written by "Sambo" and first published in 1862 by H. M. Higgins in Chicago. "Squire Jones's Daughter" tells of the virtues of "The prettiest girl in the State of Maine" and was copyrighted by New York publisher Henry De Marsan in 1860. "The Sweet Birds Are Singing" is a cheerful pastoral duet about springtime that dates to at least 1836. "On a Green Grassy Noll" by J. D. Canning was first published in Boston in 1852 and is an elegy for a nameless old farmer who has "ploughed his last furrow." "The Old Mountain Tree" is a ballad in the form of a quartet by James G. Clark first published in 1854. It expresses longing for an old homestead. Clark 1829-1897 enlisted in the 35th New York as a 1st lieutenant and was detailed to remain in the recruiting service. He used music in his efforts to enlist soldiers in the cause and was dubbed "The People's Poet." "Lament of the Irish Emigrant" is a ballad by Helen Blackwood 1807-1867 with music by William R. Dempster 1808-1871 first published in Boston around 1840. It tells the story of an Irish emigrant who has buried his wife Mary and their child. Blackwood Baronness Dufferin and Claneboye was a British songwriter composer poet and author. Dempster a Scottish singer was very popular in the United States. "Soon and For Ever" is a sentimental hymn by J. B. Monsell about the Christian's union with Christ in Heaven. Rev. James Samuel Bewley Monsell 1811-1875 was an Irish Anglican clergyman and poet. He wrote the poem in 1853 or earlier.Condition: Very minor soiling else near fine.
books‎

‎CIVIL WAR RHODE ISLAND‎

‎161 Young Men of Providence R.I. Found “Loyal League†Pledged to Support the Union‎

‎
"We the members of the Loyal League do hereby pledge ourselves by words and acts whenever practicable to use our influence in support of the Government in all its measures for the suppression of the present unholy rebellion; and we will use our influence to discountenance and oppose all efforts in opposition to the Government and the Union."
CIVIL WAR--RHODE ISLAND.Pledge and original membership roll of the Loyal League of Providence Manuscript Document Signed with 161 signatures ca. January 1863 Providence RI. 2 pp. 7¾ x 22¼ in.

Historical Background

Loyal Leagues also often known as Union Leagues were men's clubs established during the Civil War. They usually consisted of the professional merchant and artisan classes in northern cities. The first such club formed in Philadelphia in 1862.

Many of the signers of this membership roll were born between 1844 and 1850 and many were probably students at Providence High School. In 1861 students from the high school organized into a militia company called the "Ellsworth Phalanx" in honor of the New York Zouave commander Elmer Ellsworth killed in May 1861 in Alexandria Virginia. They drilled and paraded in Providence throughout the winter and into the spring of 1862.

After Confederate General Stonewall Jackson routed Union General Nathaniel Banks' forces at Winchester Virginia and pushed them back across the Potomac River in May 1862 urgent calls went out for troops to defend Washington D.C. In response Governor William Sprague of Rhode Island ordered the organization of the 10th Rhode Island for three months' service. Company B was recruited almost entirely from the ranks of the High School and University companies and commanded by Captain Elisha Dyer former governor of the state. At least one of the signers here William H. Hawkes served in Company B in 1862 and another Harry A. Richardson had served in Company K of the 9th Rhode Island in the summer of 1862.

The likely author of the pledge and first signer on the right column was Granville Budlong 1844-1909. The first signer in the left column was Lewis G. Janes 1844-1901 son of prominent abolitionist Alphonso Janes. Other signers included Arthur Lincoln son of a professor at Brown University; and William E. Cushing 1844-1880 who became an architect and designed the city's baseball stadium in 1878. At least two signers Frederick Metcalf and Eugene F. Granger were killed later in the war while serving in the military. Metcalf was only seventeen when he died of disease in South Carolina in 1864 after a year in the service. Granger the son of a Baptist minister joined a New Hampshire regiment and died in a Confederate prison in North Carolina. His younger brother Edward V. Granger also signed this roll. Other signers were the sons of merchants railroad agents carpenters tin platers and masons in Providence. Several went on to graduate from Brown University in the late 1860s and early 1870s.

On March 19 1863 the New York Times reported that in Providence Rhode Island

"Only two weeks remain before the election. The Republicans and those loyal men of other parties who have united with them are diligently at work in canvassing the State. They are marking those "peace" men who … are expressing sympathy with the rebellion. The Democrats are really very unfortunate. They can't find one of their own party who wants office. They have been trying a month to get a Governor but no Democrat will accept their nomination…. When bad men combine good men must unite. So the loyal men of all parties are coming together in solemn league to support the Government and to give all their energies to the vigorous prosecution of the war. The "League" in this city is composed of some two thousand loyal names. It is fast increasing in numbers and is extending its spirit and influence throughout the loyal portions of the State."

Condition

Originally two joined leaves. The topmost portion of the sheet lost allowing the title "Pledge" to just be made out. Conservation repairs of fold separations. Strong signatures in various color inks continuing and with docketing on verso.
books‎

‎Japan's Longest Day‎

‎Tokyo: Kodansha International 1990. 5th Printing. Mass Market Paperback. Near Fine. Fifth printing. Minor general wear. 1990 Mass Market Paperback. 339 pp. "Many books have been written about Japan's surrender in World War II but the definitive story can only be told by the Japanese themselves. This brilliant reconstruction of the bitter hours preceding the surrender announcement of Emperor Hirohito is based on material compiled by the Pacific War Research Society a panel of distinguished Japanese authors and journalists. In minute and vivid detail it relates the history-making events of the brief twenty-four-hour period before the Emperor's broadcast that changed the course of nations-and the lives of millions. During those hours-while hot-blooded young army officers were in violent conflict about whether to surrender or not-one man General Korechika Anami Minister of War with his indomitable will and loyalty stood firm in his conviction that the Emperor's word must be obeyed. That conviction led him to the supreme sacrifice sepukku and his country to peace. Japan's Longest Day is a penetrating document on the tragic personalities who played out their last great roles on the crumbling stage that was the Imperial Empire of Japan. Wilson French is the 6 only officer known to have been taken prisoner he was wounded in the engagement of the first inst & we are not aware of his being paroled"

Historical Background

The Battle of Gettysburg fought July 1-3 1863 was a major turning point in the Civil War. Over the course of three grueling days Union Major General George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac beat back desperate attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia including the ill-fated "Pickett's Charge" on July 3. The Union victory ended Lee's short-lived invasion of the North.

Many soldiers of the 17th Connecticut had been stung by criticisms leveled at their unit after the Battle of Chancellorsville where the corps was surprised and driven from the field with a flank attack by Stonewall Jackson. As Brady reports here events on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg were eerily similar to Chancellorsville. On July 1 their regiment was again divided outnumbered and outflanked by the same Confederate unit as it had been at Chancellorsville although this time under command of Richard Ewell. As he drove the Connecticut soldiers from the field and through the streets of Gettysburg on the first day of fighting Union Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Fowler was killed. In a disciplined retreat that evening the 17th Connecticut fell back and was posted near the center of the Union line on Cemetery Hill near a stone wall. Their position where the Union lines' "fishhook" curved southeastward toward Culp's Hill exposed them to murderous crossfire from Confederate artillery on three sides. The unit sustained high casualties for the next two days; of the unit's 386 men at Gettysburg 20 were killed 81 wounded and 96 reported missing. Brady himself was wounded by a shell fragment on July 2.

The regiment performed heroic service on the second day of the battle protecting Cemetery Hill from the attacks of Jubal Early's division specifically Harry Hays's brigade of "Louisiana Tigers." The 17th Connecticut then withstood the Confederate bombardment of July 3 spending much of the day trading shots with sharpshooters in town. Brady's report in slightly revised and expanded form is reprinted in Official Records Series 1 Vol. 27 Chap. 39 Part 1 pp. 716-719. In closing there Brady said "The regiment behaved gallantly. No troops in the world behaved better. Both officers and men are deserving of great credit for their coolness and bravery throughout the entire three days' battle."

Allen G. Brady 1822-1905 was from Torrington Connecticut. He enlisted in May 1861 as part of the 3rd Connecticut Infantry Regiment. In August 1862 he was commissioned into the 17thConnecticut Volunteers. Brady was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel for his valor at the Battle of Chancellorsville just two months before Gettysburg. There Brady assumed command after the colonel and lieutenant colonel of his regiment each fell. Brigadier General Charles Devens commended Brady in his official report stating "The Seventeenth Connecticut under command of Major Brady – its colonel having been wounded and lieutenant-colonel killed – was in fact rallied and reformed in their positions." In October 1863 Brady was discharged for disability presumably from his wound suffered at Gettysburg three months previous. He was mustered into the Veteran Reserve Corps and served as Provost-General at the Point Lookout Union Prison Camp in 1864. He was brevetted Colonel in August 1865.
books‎

ANNA BIGELOW.Autograph Manuscript Signed unique calligraphy book with illustrations pressed sea weeds and hand lettered four lines of verse titled 'Sea Weeds.' New York N.Y 1864. 7½ x 10½ on 60-plus pages with 31 moss examples interleaved.
Album donated to benefit Union soldiers presented at the New York Metropolitan Fair held on March 28 1864 to raise funds to aid sick and wounded Union soldiers. The Metropolitan Fair was organized to benefit the Sanitary Commission a private relief agency authorized by federal legislation in 1861. The Commission raised an estimated $25 million in revenue more than $386 million today and enlisted thousands of volunteers. A New York Times article on Jan. 1 1864 provided a preview: "Every branch of agriculture trade industry and art will be invited to contribute its choicest and costliest products for exhibition and sale. Musical and dramatic artists will be invited to aid the common cause with their talent and genius. All the material resources of the great City of New-York and of the region directly tributary to it are to be invoked."

The great success of an earlier Chicago fair inspired many women in the North to become involved. The Metropolitan Fair included everything from "Architectural Ornaments" to "Wines & Liquors" to "Wholesale Millinery Goods." Commemorative and ceremonial objects were often specially designed for the Sanitary fairs. Anna Bigelow's album of sea mosses may have been displayed in the "Arrangements and Decoration" section.

When Northerners attended fairs donated money or goods or volunteered their time they were aiding the soldiers on the front lines. Autographs of leading Americans were often sold; Lincoln even donated an autograph manuscript of the Gettysburg Address to the New York Fair where it sold for $1000. DORR WAR.Book. Report of the Trial of Thomas Wilson Dorr for Treason; Including the Testimony at Length.Together with the Sentence of the Court and the Speech of Mr. Dorr Before Sentence. Providence R.I. B.F. Moore 1844. 1st ed. 115 pp. 5 1/3 x 8¾ in.

Based on Rhode Island's colonial charter over half of adult males were disenfranchised. Thomas W. Dorr led the effort to change Rhode Island's political system and expand voting rights. After trying to change the system internally he created the People's Party held an extralegal constitutional convention and set up a competing government. The Rhode Island General Assembly drafted a rival constitution and in 1842 both groups voted on their respective Constitutions. Both Dorr and sitting Governor Samuel Ward King were elected governor but King refused to accept the People's Constitution declared martial law and accused Dorr of treason. While he did not attempt to seize the State House or governmental institutions a few armed clashes did occur. Dorr fled the state but returned and was convicted in 1843 but released for health reasons two years later. Ultimately Rhode Island greatly liberalized voting rights in the aftermath of the rebellion. This trial record prepared by his defense attorneys is especially scarce. R & B 44-2044.
