He took part in the Mexican–American Seminole and the Kansas-Missouri Border Wars. He was very active as an artillery officer in the Civil War from Bull Run until the end of the war. Barry was in command of the northern frontier during the Fenian raids of 1866. </p><p>Note: There are a number of works translated from the French in the military books offered by Van Nostrand. Another book on engineering is by J. C. Duane not related to William Duane but a West Point graduate and the grandson of an Irish immigrant.
