For many years covetous nations have been nibbling at the edge of the crust First edition of this eyewitness account of clashes between French and Chinese naval forces following the collapse of the Li-Fournier Agreement. Two tables show detail each side's ships and their specifications as well as the damage they sustained. The Tonkin War developed out of a tussle between France and China for influence in Vietnam. Following a number of engagements diplomatic exchanges between Li Hongzhang and Captain Ernest François Fournier produced a tentative agreement that China would withdraw from Tonkin and legally recognize a French protectorate. Negotiations however eventually broke down and the French launched an attack on Fuzhou on 23 August 1884. Foreign military observers including the two American authors of this report saw the engagement as a chance to evaluate the success of recent Chinese attempts to modernize the imperial navy. For the Qing empire the Battle of Fuzhou was a disaster the French fleet eight ships outgunning its eleven vessels all of which were eventually sunk. The defeat "paved the way for the dynasty's downfall" Po p. 206. The eight plates are after sketches made during the battle and show several Chinese ships before and after they were sunk. The final sketch is of a dog which drowned while trying to escape from the Yangwoo the Chinese flagship. Octavo. With 8 plates tables in text. London: Issued by the Ministry of Supply 1940. A striking British wartime poster appealing for salvage showing Hitler Goebbels and Goering cowering under a barrage of newspapers pots and bones thrown by a mob of British housewives. The poster tells housewives that "you can have a 'smack at 'em'. There are war weapons in your household waste". It instructs them to separate out paper metal and bones from their house waste to be collected and used in munition manufacturing. The title is a quote from Herbert Morrison which was also used for a Pathé newsreel and a popular song. Offset lithograph 379 x 252 mm. Tiny chip at foot light crease at head. Duren Germany - Before and After.
New York: Prepared and distributed by Army Information Branch by the US Government Printing Office 1944. A wartime poster showing side-by-side photographs of the destruction of Düren by allied bombing. The poster was produced as part of the Newsmaps series made by the American Army for display at military installations and government war offices. The series was printed with different designs on each side of the poster so that it could be flipped and the display changed. Düren the last major population centre before the Rhine crossing was heavily bombed on 16 November 1944 by the RAF and American artillery in support of US First Army tank and infantry advance. It was captured in February 1945. The photographs clearly show craters and shell holes overlapping in the centre for saturation effect resulting in the almost complete destruction of the town centre. Half-tone photographic map 609 x 460 mm; verso printed with articles and photographs on the Allied push into Panay and across the Rhine. Included are two other 1944 maps from the series showing landing craft action in New Guinea the conquest and liberation of France and action in Mindoro and Belgium. A few minor splits along old folds. In very good condition. unknown

RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR
Official History Naval and Military of the Russo-Japanese War.
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1910-20. With over 100 maps and plans First edition one of only 250 possible complete sets with the bookplate of Thomas Beaumont Hohler Second Secretary at the British Embassy in Tokyo from 1902 to 1905. During the Russo-Japanese War Hohler visited the front as an observer and enjoyed a strong relationship with the commander of the Japanese navy Vice-Admiral Saito Makato. The last complete set to appear at auction sold at Sotheby's in 1982. "As record of what actually happened this is probably the best account of the Russo-Japanese War produced by any general staff in Europe. Reports of the British observers and the official accounts of Austria Germany the United States Russia and Japan were all consulted; Russian authorities provided much useful information and the proofs were 'very carefully revised' by Japanese military officers in Tokyo" Higham. The volumes were compiled by a team led by Sir Ernest Swinton 1861-1951 the head of Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence and the future inventor of the tank while Russian documents were translated by Archibald Wavell 1883-1950 later Viceroy of India. Swinton's group completed the series by 1914 but the outbreak of war delayed the printing of the third volume until 1920. Of Volume II only 250 copies were printed compared to 2000 for Volume I and 1500 for Volume III. Working under the leadership of Sir Claude Macdonald Hohler 1871-1946 monitored the course of the war and advised Britain's Japanese allies. Re-assigned in 1906 he later served as Secretary of Legation Mexico 1910-17 and was the diplomat responsible for intercepting the Zimmerman Telegram. Further postings took him to the US Turkey Hungary and Denmark. His describes his time in Japan in his Diplomatic Petrel 1942. Map of the Siberian Railway: The Great Land Route to China and Korea.
London: Edward Stanford 1917. Navigating a region in crisis The 1917 edition of this long-running map the working copy of Captain Noël Louis St Pierre Bunbury a member of Major-General Alfred Knox's British Military Mission to Siberia. Bunbury travelled along the Trans-Siberian Railway between April and November 1919 training White Russian officers and soldiers. Important stops along the railway are marked in blue pencil. Appointed by Lloyd George and Winston Churchill Knox was a logical choice being fluent in Russian and having served in St Petersburg in diplomatic posts before the First World War. His mission running parallel to the deployment of British troops arrived in Omsk in October 1918. Knox was tasked with organizing Russian units to fight the Bolsheviks and strategically advising Admiral Kolchak who was installed as Supreme Ruler of Russia at Omsk the following month. Bunbury 1890-1971 served in several campaigns in Waziristan received the DSO in 1937 and earned promotion to brigadier in the Indian Army in 1941. Between 1943 and 1944 he was aide-de-camp to George VI. Colour lithographed map 750 x 1140 mm laid down in sections on linen as issued folding away into octavo cloth covers front board with yellow label lettered in black. Map bright a little soiling more so on verso and to boards spine sunned: a very good example. hardcover

[First World War Souvenir]
'Piece of German Aeroplane Brought down by a British machine beside our lines 17th October 1917 near Vlamertinge sic' inscription on a piece of salvaged plywood
Very Good. An irregular piece of weathered plywood inscribed as above maximum dimensions 45 × 102 mm mounted on card behind glass in a modern wooden frame external dimensions 150 × 200 mm. As found now preserved and displayed to advantage; overall in excellent condition. Supporting documentation includes a lengthy extract from 'Flying Fury' 1918 by James Thomas Byford McCudden VC DSO and bar MC and bar MM and Croix de Guerre 1895-1918 describing his attack on an LVG C.VI a two-seater German reconnaissance and artillery-spotting aircraft on 17 October 1917 over Vlamertinghe . the very machine from which this relic was souvenired. <p>'I followed the wreckage down till the Hun crashed and then landed alongside on some good stubble in order to put a guard on the Hun. <p>I left my engine ticking over while I went to look at the Hun and I found two groups of Australian infantry. I pushed my way into the middle of the first group and found that the attraction was the observer who had fallen from the machine at about 5000 feet. He was a huge man named Ernst Hadrich and seeing that he was dead I went over to the other group of men about a hundred yards away and here found the remains of the machine and the pilot. <p>Everything of value in the way of souvenirs on the machine had already gone for although I landed a very short time after the Hun came down the Tommies had already taken what was worth taking and the way they behaved was not very edifying from the disciplined point of view in which I had always been brought up'. <p>An evocative souvenir and a sobering account. unknown
