"Cuts through the propaganda to show for the first time the sequence of events on Koje Island and in the other American prisoner camps. Only by viewing the events as they occurred, and as they were related to American policy at the truce talks in Panmunmom, is it possible to understand the periodic large-scale massacres, some of which found their way into the headlines. The authors were fortunate in being in Korea during all these events, not only at the truce talks and the front but also in the rear where they had scores of interviews with prisoners who escaped from Koje Island; Kuomintang and Rhee agents who worked on Koje and were later parachuted into North Korea and taken prisoner, and with captured United Nations soldiers who had themselves served as guards on Koje and had actually taken part in the massacres. The picture is clear and conclusive. The Koje events were a necessary part of overall American strategy. The macabre skeleton of Koje known to the public from attenuated press reports, needs flesh and clothes in order to be recognised as the monstrosity that it truly is." - Author's Note. World War II required the United Nations to prepare for the threatened invasion of the American continent by the Axis Powers. Careful study indicated the Nazi timing of this invasion was the early winter of 1941-42. So confident in this plan were the Nazi Storm Troopers that German prisoners of war, landing at a port in the St. Lawrence from England in 1940, were convinced they would soon be released by air-borne troops and armed again to assist in the plan of Nazi invasion. The George McNamara Construction Company of Toronto was awarded the contract for building the airport at Goose Bay, Labrador, and Mr. William Durrell (to whom this book is dedicated) was appointed General Superintendant of construction.- Paraphrased from Chapter 1. Carr [1895-1595] was appointed Senior Naval Officer at Goose Bay in June 1943. Here he recounts his fascinating experiences there, concluding with his reflections on the war and the nature of man.
