Two pay lists of the the officers belonging to the Garrison of Fort St Phillips who are to receive
Minorca 1783. Two single sheets. Folio. Very good copies a little toned old folds. Two single sheets. Folio. The first is titled: "No. 26 Pay List for additional Subsistence etc to the officers in st. Philips Castle from 25 Dec. 1781 to 23 Feb. 1782." The second has written on the verso: " No. 136 Pay List to make up Subs. to Brevet Officer etc equal to the Rank where in they respectively serve in The Garrison of Fort St. Philips during the Siege Decemb. 24 1781 - Dollars 4350-50." These two officer pay lists are signed by each of the 36 and 44 listed officers. They're a wonderful souvenir of the siege and with a sample of every officer's signature a valuable source for further research. <br /> <br /> The five month Siege of Minorca August 19 1781 - February 5 1782 was a vital victory over England in the European theatre of the Revolutionary War. Throughout most of the eighteenth century English possession of the island was of real strategic importance from its deep-water harbor the Royal Navy could launch attacks against the Mediterranean fleets of Spain France and Italy. unknown

20 Letters reporting events at Ladysmith the Transvaal Bloemfontein and elsewhere

A fine group of letters by an English intelligence officer steadily rising through the ranks. In 1899 he is "sleeping in the open air only one blanket & one waterproof sheet." Within a year he was Lord Roberts' private clerk and in December 1900 he is stationed at the Commander-in-Chief's Office Kitchener's doing "confidential military work for the Military Secretary to Lord Kitchener." <br /> <br /> Although part of the intelligence service Carter saw more than his share of fighting. He describes the march to Ladysmith and the action at Elands Laagte Station noting "a bullet going through the top of my helmet and cutting off some of my hair but without even scratching the skin."<br /> <br /> The next four letters were written from Ladysmith and provide a full account of the siege. "The Boers had big siege guns mounted on the hills around Ladysmith which quite outclassed our light field guns . They'd completely invested Ladysmith & cut the telegraph lines & pulled up the Railway . Then began the long dreary siege." Carter reports using "a lot of pigeons" and the cost of Kaffir and Zulu runners to get letters out of Ladysmith and at least one of his letters not here was published in the Hamilton Spectator.<br /> <br /> The siege is depicted much like a holiday camp citing football matches swimming races water polo cricket. "We got so indifferent to the Boer 'snipers' that you would see most of our chaps having an afternoon siesta behind their trenches while bullets would be chipping the stones around them. We also used to organise pools when we could see some of the Boers and have a long range shooting match the man who bowled the first Boer over taking the pool." Yet there is also much on troops movements information on the Boers the conditions of Ladysmith accounts of engaging the enemy and reflections on the experience of combat: "the actual fighting is all right as the excitement deadens your faculties but after a battle when . you see your poor companions who a few hours before were joking with you lying dead or else writhing in the agonies of pain caused by frightful wounds then you feel your courage leaving you and your nerves getting like wax." <br /> <br /> The remaining correspondence includes three letters as Carter's regiment treks across the Transvaal through August and September 1900. These too are full of detail of life in the field bivouacking scouting enemy positions and action: "There was a grand opportunity for our Field Artillery. They simply pumped shrapnel into them the Artillery Officers going mad at the sight and shrieking to the gunners 'fire! fire! hurry up you b----- fools you never had such a chance fire!' . You could see at every discharge of the guns the Boers falling and at the same time our splendid Infantry running for all they were worth trying to get at them with the bayonet . It is very seldom the Boers leave any wounded or dead behind them and it proves how hard we pressed them . It was like a shambles . one two or more bodies horribly mutilated by the effects of the Lyddite."<br /> <br /> The final group commences with Carter being stationed at the Commander-in-Chief's office and he wastes no opportunity to use the special mail service for his own correspondence. He describes Kitchener at work and provides insight to life in the office. Yet beneath this is a yearning for the war to end and a frustration that it can't be done in one swift battle: "We cannot get a good fight out of the beggars they simply have a few shots at us and as soon as we get near enough to do some damage off they go helter-skelter." <br /> <br /> This group were all addressed to Carter's long time friend we know only by the name of Jose. Given the warmth and detail included here it's possible that he was using these letters as a substitute for a diary. Carter served with some distinction in 1st Manchester Regiment and was mentioned in the despatches. unknown

Camp near Brooks Station Saturday April 11 1863. Fine original condition. 15-1/2 x 9-3/4 inches. ".Yesterday I witnessed one of the grandest sights that I ever beheld. Our whole corps was reviewed by the President Generals Hooker McLain Howard Steinway Secretary Seward and an innumerable host of Brigadier Generals and it was a sight that has paid me for coming to war." The spectacle is described in great detail. Private Penfield was soon to be captured at Chancellorsville spending 12 days as a prisoner of war before being exchanged. He survived the war to carry on his father's carriage making business in Monroe Connecticut and later founded a small private academy. unknown

Virginia; various places including City Point 1863-1865. Fine original condition. 8vo. With a brief signed note describing the finding of these letters on a farm near Albany New York. Two letters from Charles Seaver to his sister describe a night-time call to arms arrival on the Rapidan coming under battery fire and forcing the enemy infantry across the river; hoping to relocate to Washington rather than South Carolina; effecting the surrender of "five Rebble sentenals" and the destruction of a railroad bridge by axe and fire. To his mother from City Point he writes of religion; of money due him and how to collect it in case he is killed; and a temporarily successful Rebel capture of 2500 cattle. Merrill Flint writes to his sister on April 6th 1865 from Virginia about walking the streets of Petersburg "it looks very rough"; and not expecting to see Richmond for some time "for we are following Old Lee as fast as the Army can march.the Confederate Army is on its last pins." Tears along spine and corners tear into text on first leaf without loss some light wear previously folded else very good with a manuscript notation "File 4 d" in upper margin. 8 pages. 1 vols. 8vo. Very Rare. Contains the text of three letters by "Bob" addressed to his mother describing the battle of Murfreesboro. The author was a officer of the 15th U. S. Infantry part of the Regular Brigade or "Forlorn Hope" consisting of the 15th 16 18 and 19th Regiments U. S. Infantry and Battery H 5th Artillery. They were for this action attached to General Rousseau and then joined to General Rosecrans for the battle. The text from two newspapers reports of the battle are included in the texts. With notation under title "The following Letters are printed for private use only to accommodate friends of the writer who are absent from the City and desire to hear from him". The map itself locates battles and skirmishes by means of red dots or by red underlining of place names and it also gives the population statistics for each state.
