‎Purnell for BPC Publishing 1969-70. 128 weekly parts in 8 vols. roy. 8vo. First Edition profusely illustrated in colour and monochrome throughout; all original parts housed in publisher's blue rexine binders blocked in silver a very good bright clean set. Produced in 'magazine' format the work as a whole makes full use of its size and space to create a lucid vivid and valuable account of the conflict. The number choice and quality of the photographs illustrations and diagrams are worthy of special mention. ‎FIRST ANGLO-SIKH WAR - CLEVELAND, W, corporal H M 31st Regiment‎

‎Extracts from a Journal kept on Board the Ship "Madagascar" on her Passage from Calcutta to England‎

‎Deal: Printed by J. Deveson 1847. The battlefields of the Punjab seen from the ranks First and only contemporary edition of this brief but spirited and entirely unembroidered account in the authentic voice of an enlisted man. The 31st were one of the most heavily engaged units of the conflict seeing action at Mudki Ferozeshah Aliwal and Sobraon. Scarce with just two locations traced BL and Boston Public Library unrecorded at auction. Vivid vignettes from the battle front are set within the context of a diary account of an uneventful voyage back from Calcutta to Gravesend. Cleveland opens on 23 October 1846 "weather continues fine and the wind steady" reminiscing of Moodkee "the first battle in which I had even been engaged I have often since endeavoured to imagine what my feelings were on that occasion but the hurry and confusion of that Action prevented the exercise of thought". One thing remains clear in his memory "So confident were our Officers and men that the Sikh Army was composed of nothing but a rebel mob that they did not believe they would hazard an engagement. this entire ignorance of the Sikh Army it is wonderful that all were alike involved even the Governor and Commander in Chief each of whom it should fairly be supposed ought to have been possessed of correct information on so important a subject". Of Ferozeshah he recalls the "lurid flames" of the burning Sikh camp "gleaming through the darkness diffusing sufficient light to make the horrors of our situation more apparent" the shot from the Sikh guns falling "among us by far to thick and fast to be agreeable". The situation only saved by what Cleveland - along with Sikh commander Tej Singh - read as the Commander in Chief's order for the cavalry to make a "false charge" which was in fact the withdrawal of the Horse Artillery desperately short of ammunition to Ferozepur to resupply while under cavalry escort. At Aliwal the 31st were on the extreme right of the British line "When we had arrived within a short distance of the village under heavy fire from the enemy who were waving their swords and cutting a great variety of menacing capers in front of us General Smith galloped up and said 'take that village boys and carry it along with you' when the whole regiment broke into a rapid double which they did not abate until they had cleared the village captured the guns upon its left and caused the whole of the enemy's left flank to run for dear life. We now quietly took possession of the whole of their camp equipage ammunition and stores; and having amply supplied ourselves. we turned in for the night near the banks of the Sutlej". And so to Sobraon "At 9 A. M. the battle had reached its warmest point - shot and shell were then whizzing through the air in rapid succession. on their fearful missions of mischief. from the muzzles of 150 pieces of ordnance - about half past 9 a low rumbling sound was heard resembling distant thunder which was caused by the report of musquetry - as the infantry ad passed the Enemy's breastworks. thus concluded the most severe contest in the annals of Indian warfare and not a second to any fought in Europe with the exception of Waterloo". Following the ratification of the Treaty of Lahore the 31st marched to Calcutta and embarked for home Cleveland composing this very personal and telling NCO's witness to world-changing events while under weigh. Octavo. pp. 24. Original thin paper printed wrappers. Wraps rubbed and soiled with some minor chips and splits at the edges no loss of text creases to the corners; pale toning and some finger-soiling to the text; but a well preserved copy very good. paperback‎

‎WORLD WAR II‎

‎Daily wartime diary of Captain Leonard Hammersley Bell naval assistant to Rear-Admiral Sir Tom Phillips Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.‎

‎London: 2 September 1939 - 26 July 1941. Had he been a great man Winston would have accepted the blame himself A thorough and honest narrative by an Admiralty insider well-placed to document the onset of total war and the attitudes - in his view sometimes misguided - that shaped the navy's decision-making. In October 1939 Bell b. 1892 transferred from the Plans Division to Phillips's staff. The diary opens a month earlier one day before the declaration of war and during its two-year span Bell writes with a candour only possible in private. In the war's early months he handled "stupid questions from our ambassadors" 11 October 1939 and viewed British defensive preparations for a German invasion as "nonsense" 29 October 1939. By 1940 amid air-raid warnings there was far too much to do each day Bell like Phillips working late and more and more "dining at his desk". Pervading the account is a scepticism common to mid-ranking officers towards high-level decision makers "Admiralty suggested an attack now and then at the last moment and God knows why called off the operation" 8 April 1940. Not even Churchill is immune especially when the prime minister tries to blame the Royal Navy for decisions he took himself: "Had he been a great man Winston would have accepted the blame himself - since it lies on him squarely" 8 October 1940. In October 1941 Bell became Captain of the Fleet Eastern Fleet serving under Phillips onboard HMS Prince of Wales. After the disastrous sinking of the ship and Phillips's death Bell remained with the Eastern Fleet until the end of hostilities assuming the post of Director of Service Conditions at the Admiralty in peacetime. A note on the front endpaper of the final volume records that Bell left these volumes in London when he joined Prince of Wales. A further volume kept at sea went down with the ship. 6 vols quarto. Each vol. 240 pp. filled in neat manuscript or with tipped-in manuscript sheets rear pastedown of first vol. with affixed duplicated-typescript letter from Bell to Rear-Admiral H. C. Allen summarizing Bell's naval career. Original light brown cloth marbled edges. Slight rubbing to spines ends generally internally clean and fresh; a well-preserved diary. hardcover‎

‎MIDDLE EAST AVIATION - World War I‎

‎X Aircraft Depot at Royal Air Force Alexandria & Aboukir 1916-1919.‎

‎1919. The nuts and bolts of the air war in the desert Superbly detailed visual record of the RAF's central logistical hub for the Middle East theatre serving the region from Egypt to the Hejaz. The depot offered complete servicing from erection out of the crate to scrapping after strike off. Images include personnel groups exteriors and interiors of workshops warehouses hangars and auxiliary buildings: a complete survey of the staffing and facilities of the complex. The prints are of striking quality the images sharply focussed and crisply printed rewarding close examination under a lens with a wealth of detail. Perhaps the most arresting photographically are the shots of the storage spaces unoccupied aisles extending into the distance filled with fastidiously ordered ranks of parts; a touch uncanny but effectively evocative of scale and rigorous organization. Based at RAF Aboukir Abu Qir near Alexandria X AD was the largest such facility in the region part of a complex including an airfield home base for a flight school and several training squadrons - craft where identified Nieuports and SE-5s bear tail numbers assigned to regional trainers - all of which continued in use until the end of WWII. The present copy is uncaptioned but comparison with records of the two copies traced through auction - the only others found - it is possible to identify a number of the images: various groups of personnel HQ staff carpenters fitters stores staff football and gymnastics teams; the headquarters buildings; tool stores; the contents of the parts stores encompassing small fabric pieces aircraft fittings spare wings and planes motor machine-gun engine and balloon spares; the depot's motor transport vehicles mainly Crossley tenders; the base tennis courts; the engine-erecting shop; outdoor engine testing; hangars; the riggers' shop dismantling shop dope shop and salvage hangar. ‎Enshih formerly Shihnan picture album. Building Committee. . . ; Description of pictures by numbers. . . An outstanding photo album filled with numbered photographs together with descriptive list and introduction by Rev. Mueller assembled following the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod missionaries return to Shihnan station in the aftermath of the Communist-Nationalist Civil War 1927-1930.‎

‎Enshih Shihnan Hubei China: R.J. Mueller Rev. Gebhardt Miss Simon LCMS ca. 1930-1937. Two vols. 1st - Oblong folio. 11.25 x 15 in. 48 pp unpaginated. thick black paper stock w/ 103 original silver gelatin photographs sized 2.75 x 3.5 in. all neatly numbered in ink MS at corners affixed to the leaves. Contemporary black flexible board post-binder punch-sewn & glued at spine in black paper paper title label partially torn on front cover Building Committee title label affixed to first page minor chipping edgewear to fore-edges some scuffing tidemark to fore-edges still a VG- exemplar w/ all images with bright strong contrast; 2nd - 4to. 8 leaves carbon copy typescript on onion-skin ruled paper some ink annotations corrections 1 pencil MS annotated correction still VG signed by R.J. Mueller on first leaf dated April 24 1937 from the library of David G. Kohl 1946-2025 former art teacher at the Hong Kong International School musician artist and historian. A remarkable photo album with images shot by three different Lutheran Church Missouri Synod LCMS missionaries in China along with the descriptive contents list compiled by Rev. R.J. Mueller detailing the purpose and composition. He writes that the Enshih Shihnan Mission had prepared three albums “one for the Mission Board one for the Building Committee of General Conference and one at the Enshih Station. The numbers all agree. However not all pictures listed appear in all books.†This “Building Committee†album was intended to focus primary on the structures homes chapels of the mission as well as surrounding areas and was intended to aid in speeding up communications for fundraising and building affairs issues as correspondents could then merely refer to the master list of numbers held by all three parties. Enshih China was one of the final mission stations established by the LCMS far from their other missions and when Gebhardt returned to Enshih following the Civil War in 1928 there was significant damage to the mission structures to be repaired. Looting by bandits and marauding soldiers had caused over $ 2000 in damage but was encouraged to find that the Lutheran evangelist Shen had continued the mission chapel school orphanage. He would later be joined by Mueller and others although primarily composed of Chinese Staff. These photos in the album includes views of Mueller’s residence windows frames and gutters looted; screens torn doors boarded up as well as views of the native house and threshing floor adapted into an orphanage at Yao Wan after 1930. Several others show the extent of the protective walls built around the properties farm houses the gates as well as farms bridges and nearby fields at Enshih. Landmarks such as rocks shaped like Elephants in the river and Big and Little Hog creek below farmland. A very nice series of photos depict the Ts’i Ts-ung-fu funeral the blind deaf and other orphans about 1931 as well as textiles drying in the sun. Other photos capture the Ch’i-li-ping market fortune teller temple noodle stand and the T’ai shan shrine at Ch’i-li-p’ing. More photos depict Hu Ping-chih the orphanage secretary Yuen Ye-chih cashier in 1934 Hsieh T’i-ya seminary student who died later in 1937; along with the mission pulpit nearby streets and the rear view of the Yao Wan houses.Of additional interest are the images of the rugged roads to Liang Shui-chin the temple and steep steps drying opium in Kuan-p’e which was a small town between the East Gate and Yao Wan before opium raising was banned in 1934; along with the nearby Ch’ing-Ching Clear River at the high water stage the front of the True Light Chapel in 1934 as well as the gravestone of Mr. & Mrs. Wang Japanese-Lutherans who had died in 1930. The final photo No. 169 again shows the Clear River below the city. Mueller 1905-1998 graduated from seminary in 1929 and left for China with his wife Dorothy for the Evangelical Lutheran Foreign Mission Board returned briefly to the U.S. from 1937-1940 spent 1939-1942 teaching at a Lutheran seminary in China while being bombed by the Japanese and also served in Shanghai where he would supervise the Lutheran Hour and Lutheran Hour offices. Although he and his wife briefly returned to the United States in 1946 following World War II they subsequently served again in Shanghai China into the early years of Communist rule by Mao tse-tung before returning again to the U.S. See: David Kohl Lutherans on the Yangtze: A Hundred Year History of the Missouri Synod in China 2014 pp. 103 124 131 132 166 174 99-131. ‎1942. Original artwork from the Western Desert executed by Rommel's Kriegsmaler Wilhelm Wessel Three fine studies by Wilhelm Wessel Rommel's war artist Kriegsmaler executed in the field while serving as an officer with the Afrikakorps. Wessel 1904-1971 studied briefly with Kandinsky at the Bauhaus and then with Kurt Schwitters in Berlin. In 1924 he began a four-year journey through Turkey Greece Palestine and Egypt. From 1927 to 1931 studied Sumerian and Byzantine archaeology at the University of Berlin at the same time studying under expressionist painter Karl Hofer whose work was later branded as degenerate by the Nazis and included in their entartete kunst exhibition. Between 1931 and 1939 he taught art in Berlin and Westphalia. He served throughout the Second World War in France Russia North Africa and Italy initially as an officer with a Panzergrenadier regiment. In 1941 he was severely wounded during the opening of Operation Barbarossa and after recuperating joined Rommel in North Africa as a Kriegsmaler. His book Mit Rommel in der Wüste With Rommel in the Desert was published at Essen in 1943. At the conclusion of hostilities he was briefly a prisoner of war before resuming his career as an artist. "As a promoter of abstract art Wessel organized the first post-war German art exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. and took part in a number of group exhibitions" from Venice to Tokyo and "had solo exhibitions in Berlin Wüppertal Wiesbaden Vienna Stuttgart Munich Paris and elsewhere" Benezit. He was the first chairman of the West German Artists' Federation and as such sponsored an early exhibition of American art in Düsseldorf in 1956. Some of his war prints were loaned to NATO in Brussels. Provenance: acquired in 1975 from the artist's widow Irmgard Wessel-Zumloh 1907-1980 herself an accomplished artist by an American army veteran J. William Keithan Jr. 1925-2010. Keithan served with the 42nd "Rainbow" Division and after the war had a long career as an executive with the Westin Hotel chain in charge of the design and construction of over 50 hotels around the world. He has provided a 3-page typed account of the acquisition of this group in which he says: "We talked of many things. Of how General Rommel and Wessel were good friends and how after World War II Frau Rommel and son Manfred were frequently visitors to her home in Iserlohn. She was adamant in her refusal to sell or contribute any of Wessel's work to the German people or the German government". Together with a substantial album comprising 39 photographs of Wessel's war images acquired from the Canadian War Museum and Archives of New Zealand. Auction records for Wessel's post-war work are plentiful but we have not found a single example of any of his original war art appearing at auction or being otherwise offered for sale. Charcoal pastel and pencil drawings. The group comprises: a Original black-and-white charcoal drawing on pale grey paper signed "Wih. Wessel 42" measuring 460 x 590 mm; inscribed lower left corner in pencil "Hinter den Stützpunkten bei Eluel El-Aggara" "Behind the bases at Eluel El-Aggara"; Al 'Aqqarah Libya lies some 100 km west of Tobruk. An attractive and atmospheric evocation of the Libyan desert at dusk: against a low horizon a column of German lorries negotiates hills and scrubby terrain plumes of smoke billow in the distance. Reproduced in Mit Rommel in der Wüste colour plate 15. b Original coloured pastel drawing unsigned and untitled; image: 330 x 465 mm mounted overall: 500 x 620 mm. A striking image of a desert dawn patrol by three German armoured vehicles two Sd. Kfz. 222 scout cars and a Sd. Kfz. 231 armoured car their wheels kicking up sand; the low horizon line rising sun and big sky with flaring white cloud make for a most dramatic picture. Not reproduced in Mit Rommel in der Wüste and presumably unpublished. c Original pencil drawing signed "Wessel 42" entitled "German Soldiers Talking" inscribed in pencil on mount; image: 235 x 350 mm mounted framed and glazed overall: 410 x 570 mm. Label on verso noting its purchase from Wessel's widow in 1975. Reproduced as a half-page illustration in Mit Rommel in der Wüste p. 45. All pieces in excellent condition. unknown‎
