[Philippine-American War – Sri Lanka – Singapore] McIntyre, James
1899 Letter from a Soldier on His Way to the Philippines Describing Sri Lanka Singapore and Life Aboard the Transport Ship
Malacca Strait 1899. Eight-page single letter of two double-sided pages measuring 7 ¾ x 10 inches and two double sided pages measuring 4 ½ x 7 inches. Folded with small tears at folds; near fine. A letter from James McIntyre 1874–deceased to his sister Kit sent from aboard the transport ship Grant on the way to the Philippines in March of 1899. McIntyre who enlisted in Pittsburgh in July 1898 had just passed Sri Lanka and was traveling through the Malacca Strait on his way to Singapore their last stop before Manila. McIntyre describes his impressions of the region and the locals and the attitudes of his fellow soldiers.

The previous week the Grant had stopped at Colombo in Sri Lanka then British Ceylon:

“it is a nice place where the Elephant is used in place of horses and they had all kinds of tropical fruits that we could buy for a song and you ought to have heard some of the Hindoes sing the song of Tarra Ra boom Dea and Daisy Bell and several other popular songs we could understand each other quite well when they tried to speak English but when they spoke their native tongue it was the same as Dutch to usâ€.

Note that by “Hindoes†McIntyre probably just means Sri Lankans generally not Tamils in particular. In Sri Lanka as in other places along their route the locals would impress the American soldiers by diving for coins:

“since we left Gibraltar the poorer of natives would swim to our ship and holler trow shiney me dive in ketch im then some one would throw a nickel or a dime and they would go under the water and they seldom came up without the coin that was thrownâ€.

McIntyre seemingly in a bid to reassure his sister explains to her that the soldiers see the war as a game or joke:

“we are doing our best to get to the Philipines so we can take hand in the game they are playing over there what do you think of the war in the Philipines we take it as a joke and I dont think that there is a soldier on this boat who is sorry he came although every body is not looking for a chance to go home again some one will be sure to get back and my chance is as good as any we laugh and joke with each other about getting shot so dont think I am not taking the best of it and I will continue to enjoy my self till a Philipine stops me if one should be so fortunateâ€.

He also jokes about the food on board:

“there are a great many other dishes that are new to me that I never heard of before I came in the Army here is another dish we only got on Geo. Washingtons Birthday it is called ‘Cosomme’ which is a french word for Slum you take one doz. of broken skylights and four bbls. of Whitewash one Tea spoonfull of baking powder and stir one half doz. assorted railroad tunnels in serve this on crutches if I dont stop here you will be leaving home to join the Armyâ€.

Meanwhile the ship had missed a lighthouse and “been lost all day in the straits of Malacco†Malacca which was “taken as a joke by us till we near run agroundâ€. In the strait are “a great many Chinese boats†and the men are entertained by “the capers the Chinese cutâ€. When they finally reach Singapore McIntyre is impressed by how advanced it is:

“I have been writing since before dark and during that time we have run into Singapore one of the boys just asked me to come up on deck and see the town when he told me of the Electric lights and Trowley trolley Cars I told him he was trying to guy me but he said it was true and I was surprised to find it true but this is the nearest like a U.S. City at night I saw yetâ€.

Of interest to historians of the Philippine-American war especially American soldiers’ attitudes towards the conflict. unknown

[Civil War] Barnard, George N
Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain the Campaign of Atlanta March to the Sea and the Great Raid through the Carolinas
Herman Manasse 1953. Quarter Leather. Very Good binding. Oblong folio. 3 61 ll. Photographic reproduction. All pages are photographic paper likely sliver gelatin prints stubbed and bound in cloth boards backed in morocco. Binding is 16" x 19." Cover titled in gilt with presentation name in gilt below: "Mr. and Mrs. T. Harry Gatton." The first leaf is a photographic reproduction of the endpaper of the original copy capturing an ownership note in French dated 1952. This note along with a printed inclusion also part of the photograph identifies the copy used for reproduction as belonging to G. M. ver Hulst having come to him from his uncle the Comte Francois de Montholon who died 23 December 1951. The printed inclusion notes that this reproduction was done "by Herman Manasse especially for Mr. & Mrs. T. Harry Gatton of Raleigh North Carolina." We use the endpaper inscription as the earliest possible date of reproduction. Based on the physical aspects of the book it was probably done not long after that time.

Only light wear to the binding. The "contents" leaf has a small closed tear to the top margin; rippling to the photographs throughout. It appears that during the rephotographing process the border of each photograph was masked off except for each photograph's title. Count Montholon's copy was exceptionally clean making this a remarkably good reproduction a couple of the images capture some abrading to the original but generally these are very clean bright images of one of the great American photographic works. As official photographer of the Military Division of Mississippi Barnard photographed Sherman's march to the sea capturing the devastation left in the wake of the general's controversial scorched earth campaign. The images are indeed striking. A contemporary review calls this "a splendid volume containing 61 imperial photographs embracing scenes of the Occupation of Nashville the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain the Campaign of Atlanta March to the Sea and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. These photographs are views of important places of noted battle-field of military works; and for the care and judgment in selecting the points of view for the delicacy of execution for scope of treatment and for fidelity of representation they surpass any other photographic views which have been produced in this country—whether relating to the war or otherwise." Harper's Weekly Dec. 8 1866. p. 771. And indeed it has held up as a monument of American photography. While the first edition does come to market periodically it realizes some extraordinary prices.

We've been unable to determine how many copies of this full-sized reproduction were created. Though the inclusion on the first leaf specifically states that this copy was for Gatton a series of cards could have been substituted as the leaf was repeatedly photographed individualizing each copy. So while it is certainly possible that this is a one-off it is more likely that a very small number were reproduced and presented to friends family and notables. To that end Thomas Harry Gatton 1918-2001 was a notable North Carolinian. Beyond his professional endeavors he was a World War II veteran chairman of the North Carolina Historical Commission and was appointed to the American Battle Monuments Commission by presidents Kennedy Johnson and Carter. In short one to whom this presentation would have been warranted and meaningful. Howes B-150; Sabin 3462; De Renne p.1317 all for the first edition Taft Photography and the American Scene p. 232 486. Herman Manasse unknown

Mexico Dividida en Quarteles Mayores y Menores: Nombres de Sus Calles: los de sus Jueces y Alcaldes y el de los Sugetos Nombrados por el Superior Gobierno para Plantear Su Nueva Policía en el Año 1811
Mexico City: Manuel Antonio Valdes 1811. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. Small octavo. 4 52 pp. Lacking the plan as usual. Original plain wrappers. Front wrapper with a small closed tear to the bottom edge; one leaf with some loss to the bottom corner of the margin not touching text; faint and minor tideline to the top margin throughout most of the pamphlet; generally a very nice copy.

Following Hidalgo's rebellion one of the events precipitating the Mexican War for Independence the viceroy established a new policing system in the capital; that policy is laid out in this work. The cataloguer at the Bancroft Library describes the organization of the work thus: "Alphabetical catalog of the names of streets plazas and other locations in Mexico City based on an earlier version from 1783 which was printed during the tenure of interim viceroy Martin de Mayorga following the division of the city into 8 major districts quarteles and 32 sub-districts. Descriptions by the author—'un amante de la patria'—of the location and boundaries of each of the major districts is followed by an alphabetical list of the names of streets alleys bridges plazas courtyards and inns each identified with corresponding number of district and sub-district in which it is located. The pamphlet concludes with a directory of the members of the Superintendencia de Policìa y Tranquilidad Puìblica a body created by Viceroy Francisco Xavier Venegas." As others have noted bibliographies call for an engraved plan almost never found with this publication. It is also lacking in the Bancroft and almost all other institutional copies.
