Blue-gray cloth binding decorated with red stamped C.S.A and embellishments. 240 x 150 mm. 9 3/8 x 5 7/8". 180 pp.Author signed: "Mr. W.L. Daggett from F.W. Dawson Jan 1883". The author inscribed this book to William L. Daggett 1824-1889 a printer working for the Charleston's News and Courier with Dawson. Presumably Mr. Daggett was responsible for printing this book making this a presentation copy.This very rare book is a remarkable account of an Englishman traveling to the American South to join the Southern Confederacy. His book includes 18 wartime letters to his friends and family in England.Note: A few pages pp 9-16 inside are loosening from spine not completely detached there is also no loss to text or tear hence we have adequately reduced the price. ‎Raymond M. Stevenson born 1840 was an American journalist in Pennsylvania who after service in the Union Army during the Civil War was appointed by Abraham Lincoln vice consul to the American Consul in Sheffield England a post he held until 1866 after which he headed west and resumed newspaper work in Colorado. DS 3pp lettersheet 8¼" X 13½" Sheffield Great Britain 12 February 1864. Addressed to R.M. Stevenson. Very good. On blue stationery a large group of makers of renowned "Sheffield steel "sign this letter to the new American consul. "In reply to your enquiries" it begins "we the undersigned Merchants and Manufacturers in Sheffield and the Neighborhood beg to say that your Consular Business has invariably been attended to with promptness and despatch and to express our entire satisfaction with your existing arrangements for the discharge of your official duties and also with the attention we have received from Messrs. Branson & Sonwith whom we have every confidence." It continues "We further beg to say that we consider your office to be most centrally and conveniently situated for the despatch of Consular Business having been used for that purpose for a great number of years and that you could not meet with an office in a more suitable Locality." The bottom this of this page is then signed by twenty persons and/or firm names the second leaf is signed by another twenty-one persons and/or firms and the third leaf is signed by twelve persons and/or firms. The first signer on the first page is Thomas Jessop who adds "Mayor & Master Cutler." Jessop1804-87 serves as mayor of Sheffield 1863-64 and headed the steelmaking firm founded by his father -- on the second leaf he signs the firm's name "Wm Jessop & Sons." Nearby is John Brown 1816-96 who adds "Ex Mayor." Brown was Jessop's predecessor in 1862-63 an important industrialist known as "Father of the South Yorkshire Iron Trade." He signs a second time as "John Brown & Co." on behalf of the firm. Other signers on this page and the subsequent pages in no particular order include: John Martin & Co. major steel manufacturer and iron exporter; Charles Cammell & Co. iron works; Hargreaves Smith & Co. knives of all sorts; Sanderson Brothers steel manufacturers; Spear & Jackson signed twice woodworking tools manufacturers; John Wigfall & Co. butchers' knives; S & C Wardlow knife and razor manufacturers; George Wostenholm & Son cutlery table knives and forks pen and pocket knives; Wilson Hawksworth Ellison & Co. butchers' and skinning knives; Moulson Brothers saws and tool manufacturer; Charles Wild 1823-86 knife manufacturer; William Wild 1810-69 spring-knife manufacturer; Joshpe Rodgers & Sons cutlers and silversmiths; Jackson Newton knife manufacturer; Frederick Reynolds 1814-77 razor manufacturer; Thomas Firth & Sons steelmakers to the field armaments industry; and many more. Scholar Lee Tigner notes in a 2017 essay that "Sheffield Cutlers were in full swing supplying the American demand through the Civil War. Sheffield steel would have been found in most pockets on the battlefield at Gettysburg." David Hay elaborates in a 2005 article that "Geoffrey Tweedale. has shown how the American market was largely responsible for the remarkable expansion of the Sheffield crucible steel industry between the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War. In good years a third or more of Sheffield's steel output was sent across the Atlantic in addition to the vast trade in cutlery and edge tools. Large fortunes were made from the American trade by the steel firms of Sanderson Jessop Vickers Greaves Butcher and Cammell." American steel manufacturing was scattered and unreliable in the mod 19th-century and while the federal government made attempts to reduce its heavy reliance on Sheffield steel including an 1861 tariff on imported goods the need remained strong and the North remained anxious that their supply lines remain open. A steady supply of iron and steel knives and edges weapons and material for gun manufactuting and all manner of other military uses was crucial to the federal government; there was concern that Great Britain would side with the Confederacy who was in far greater need for imported goods than was the North -- and indeed at least one Sheffield steel firm had refused to sell materials to the U.S. government. When young consul Stevenson was appointed by Lincoln to the steel-producing center of England one of his main charges would have been to insure the smooth steady supply of materials to the federal government. This intriguing document appears to be the Sheffield steel industry's attempt to assure the American government that they would remain faithful supplies for the Union cause. A pencilled note in unknown hand on the blank fourth leaf "Testament of the Sheffield Manufactories & c to Management of Consular Agent" gives title to this remarkable document. unknown‎

Very Good; light printing smear front cover scan; less than average age-toning to the covers and contents; first owner's signature at top of title page; no other notable flaws. Quite firmly bound. Associated ephemera includes original owner's letter of request for this copy of the book the U.S. Government Printing Office's stock transmittal form that accompanied the book and the USGPO's notation card - from the Superintendent of Documents the regarding the "shopworn" but "best available" condition of the copy transmitted. However the only wear or other flaws noted here by us are as described above. 'Fifth Army at the Winter Line' is the sequel to 'From the Volturno to the Winter Line' and describes allied action in Italy from 15 November 1943 to 15 January 1944. with rich text many photographs and maps and other graphics as noted above. ‎1945. WORLD WAR II. Airplane fragment. Japan/Philippines 1945. Painted metal fragment from a World War II Japanese aircraft measuring 3-1/2 by 4-1/4 inches. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $4500.Original fragment of a Japanese World War II airplane used in the successful kamikaze attack on the USS Salamaua in the Lingayan Gulf on January 13 1945 with its identification scratched into the paint by its owner Lt. Commander Fred R. Salisbury II of the Salamaua.This is a fragment of a Japanese airplane that was flown by a kamikaze pilot into the USS Salamaua on January 13 1945. The ship had participated in the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines. It was one of 91 ships damaged or sunk by kamikaze attacks during the war. The aircraft in this case was a Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate single-seat fighter Japan's fastest fighter plane. First produced in the spring of 1942 the Ki-84 did not see major operational use until the Battle of Leyte at the end of 1944. After that point it became a favored airplane and was heavily used.The kamikaze attack carried out by this Ki-84 left a 16-foot by 32-foot hole in the Salamaua's flight deck. It also sparked a number of fires. The plane had carried two 551-pound bombs allowing it to penetrate deeply into the lower decks. One bomb detonated near the tank tops just above the bilge and narrowly missing the bomb stowage compartment. The blast sent debris and fuselage across the flight deck collapsing a number of bulkheads. The second bomb failed to explode and was ejected through the starboard side of the ship at the waterline. The 20-inch hole it left allowed seawater to rush into the ship. As a result the ship lost power communications and steering becoming a sitting duck.While the Salamaua sat immobile two more planes tried to strike it. One crashed into the sea while another detonated in mid-air as it approached. The failure of those pilots meant that the attack killed only 15 of the Salamaua's crew. Another 88 crewmen were injured some seriously.When Rear Admiral Calvin T. Durgin in command of a task force asked for the origin of the smoke he saw coming from the Salamaua he received the reply ""Something just went through our flight deck."" The starboard engine was submerged and the ship listed 8 degrees to starboard. Yet the crew managed to get the ship functional using only the portside engine. Ten long hours after the attack the Salamaua was able to break away to Leyte for repairs. An entire day of pumping failed to alleviate the flooding so the ship merely underwent stabilization repairs before being sent to San Francisco for two rounds of repair. The Salamaua returned to the Philippines in May and eventually was retired from service in 1946 earning the dubious distinction of being the last ship to be successfully attacked by a kamikaze. This fragment belonged to Lt. Commander Fred R. Salisbury II of Minnesota. Salisbury worked in his father's business a furniture manufacturer until the outbreak of World War II Salisbury enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February of 1942 and was assigned to be lieutenant commander of the USS Salamaua a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier. Salisbury was released on inactive duty in March 1946 and became vice president of the family business. Salisbury was responsible for etching the inscription—""Piece of Jap Kamikazi that hit USS Salamaua of Lingayan Guld Jan 13 1945—into the airplane fragment. Accompanied by Salisbury's identification card from the U.S. Naval Reserve dated ""28 NOV. 1945.""A fascinating World War II artifact. unknown‎
