[Civil War – Women – Illinois] Dutton, Rosina
A Pair of Letters Written by the Wife of a 105th Illinois Officer at the Close of the Civil War Centered on a Suspicious Figure Carrying a Valuable Object and the Fear of Deception and of Losing Her Husband: “He has told half a doz different stories already about his capture … Such conflicting ones create suspicion.â€
Sycamore DeKalb County Illinois 1865. Two autograph letters signed “Rosa†docketed on rear likely in Everell Dutton’s hand 4 and 5 pages 8 x 5 inches. Folded at center else fine. Two letters written in the final weeks of the Civil War by Rosina Adelpha Paine Dutton of Sycamore Illinois to her husband Everell Fletcher Dutton then lieutenant colonel of the 105th Illinois Infantry engaged in the closing campaigns of the war. The couple had met through their mutual friend Helen Barns Woodmanse and began an unusually close correspondence at the outset of the war at times exchanging two or three letters a day through 1863. They married in Sycamore on December 31 1863 and spent several months together in Nashville while Dutton was detailed to the Examination Board residing at Mrs. Jernigan’s boarding house before Rosina returned to Illinois and Dutton rejoined his regiment in the field. Rosa wrote a considerable amount of letters to her husband during the war some of which were collected by the Sycamore History Museum for the exhibition General Dutton’s America.

The two letters here written a week apart show Rosina’s fears and the general mood in the days prior to Lincoln’s assassination with a focus on a mysterious favor done for an unsavory character. The April 2 letter reflects Rosina’s anxiety as she awaits news from the regiment:

“Five hours later. I got to feeling so badly I could not write. I will now resume my chat. I know dear one you are tired of receiving dark gloomy letters from me but you must not hope for better while you remain in the army. Love you know is always strongly anxious when the loved one is absent. I would give everything we possess in the world if it would but bring you safely home. I am in hopes we will hear something definite from the Regt. tomorrow. I am so anxious and yet I tremble to hear from the Regt… O my Husband if you should be taken from me.†

She searches the newspapers repeatedly—“no list of casualties in the Tribune … sent Ida after the Times … sent Winnie & Mary … for the Evening Journalâ€â€”but finds “no relief of mind.†The strain is constant: “whenever I spoke … the tears would come†and even at church “I could not keep the tears from my eyes.†She notes that the 105th “could not have been through so severe a contest without losing very many men.â€

The April 12 letter is dominated by Rosina’s pointed suspicion toward a man she calls “Gerret†who appears to have entrusted Dutton with a valuable object:

“Gerret said you had in your valise for him said it was worth $500.00. If I were in your place I would get rid of it if I had to burn it. I wouldn’t carry anything five miles for that miserable scamp. No one scarcely believes his story about being captured &c. They think he made his way home as best he could & I would not be at all surprised if that were the case. He has told half a doz different stories already about his capture. He ought to have learned his story before he came home and then told it. Such conflicting ones create suspicion. Father said if he were in your place he would turn it over to Government & then bid it in.â€

No individual of this name appears in the rosters or known correspondence of the 105th Illinois and the tone of the letter suggests he was not a member of Dutton’s regiment.

She closes: “My darling husband do come and thereby make me the happiest woman in the world . try dear one. I don’t believe but that they will accept resignation now before long. May the good Father of us all take care of you is my constant prayer. Devotedly yours for all eternity. Rose.†

Overall an interesting pair of letters from a well documented and significant correspondence. unknown

[African-Americana – US Navy – Cold War] Synigal, Edgar
Photographs of Eddie “Saxman†Synigal’s US Navy Tour of Asia Showing Equator Crossing Ceremonies Musical Performances and Other Aspects of Naval Life Abroad
Mainly Asia and Oceania 1950. Photo album measuring 10 ½ x 14 ½ inches containing approximately 160 photographs; photos are mainly 4 x 5 inches and smaller with several 8 x 10 inch photos. Album covers completely detached pages with damage to edges fair; many photographs stapled in some with damage very good minus. Overall very good minus. A photo album likely belonging to Edgar “Saxman†Synigal Jr. 1937–2017. Synigal’s draft registration lists his occupation as “delivery boy†for Weidies’ Drug Store in New Orleans; he would go on to lead B.B. King’s band1 and has recording credits with artists including Bobby Womack Branford Marsalis and Jimmy McCracklin. This photo album dates from the 1950s and its identified locations are Hong Kong Kwajalein Atoll Japan Guam Formosa Taiwan the Philippines Singapore Australia and New Zealand.

Many photographs show the naval rituals surrounding the crossing of the equator. Naval equator-crossing ceremonies—often called “Crossing the Line†rites—date back centuries in European seafaring and mark a sailor’s first passage across the Equator transforming them from a “pollywog†into a “shellback†under the theatrical authority of King Neptune and his court. This often includes rough initiations: being doused with seawater crawling through messy or humiliating setups mock “shaving†with crude tools or being tossed into pools.

The local women comprise another recurring subject especially in Japan Taiwan the Philippines Hong Kong New Zealand and Australia where the women—and other local youths—are pictured hanging out on the docks and on the ship with one shot of a concert aboard the ship based on a captioned photograph Synigal was likely aboard the USS Bremerton. The young women are pictured on city streets and in clubs with the Navy men with some more formal portraits.

Several shots show Synigal playing saxophone with a Navy band; in one he sits behind the nametag “Frank†and in another “Ron†though a manuscript caption on the recto of the latter identifies him as “Saxman Synigalâ€. Other subjects include the “Centennial Celebration of the Opening of Japanâ€; “Hometown Friends†which shows young African American people posing outside presumably in New Orleans; “Boot Camp Buddiesâ€; and several interesting shots of Singapore city streets including one of a man in a songkok fez wrapping a snake around the shoulders of a man in Navy uniform.

Of interest to historians of the Navy during the Cold War especially relations between Navy men and local women in Asia.

1 Leonard Feather “Show Affirms That B.B. King Reigns†The Los Angeles Times February 21 1985. unknown

[Civil War – Massachusetts – Death and Burial] Trustees of the North Sudbury Burying Ground
Notice to Stone Layers / Proposals will be received on FRIDAY the 17th instant at the / North Sudbury Burying Ground / for laying about 25 rods of wall around the addition to said ground
Concord Massachusetts: Benjamin Tolman 1863. Printed broadside 11 ¼ x 10 inches. Some tearing at folds very good. A straightforward but telling piece documenting the expansion of a Massachusetts burying ground during the American Civil War signed in type by three trustees of the North Sudbury Burying Ground. As casualties mounted and remains were returned to hometowns existing cemeteries were frequently enlarged with new land enclosed and improved by contract. The specification of “25 rods†over 400 feet of wall indicates a substantial addition typical of mid-war efforts to increase capacity in established town burial grounds rather than create entirely new sites. Sudbury contributed roughly 150–170 men to Union service of whom approximately eleven died a scale of loss consistent with small Massachusetts towns and sufficient to register locally in burial and memorial practices. We find no other records of ephemera or broadsides relating to Civil War-era cemetery expansion. This notice is not at AAS. Benjamin Tolman unknown

[Vietnam War – Marine Corps – East Asia] Unknown Photographer
Photo Album of a US Marine in Okinawa Taiwan and Korea c. 1950s–1960s with a Series Likely Documenting the Land and Crop Projects of the Sino-American Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction in Taiwan
Japan Taiwan Korea and the US 1960. 15 ¼ x 11 inch album with attractive painted cover containing approximately 235 photos mainly 3 ½ x 5 inches and smaller. Contents generally in excellent condition. Excellent. A photo album by an unknown US Marine containing photos from his time in Okinawa Taiwan and Korea in the 1950s and 1960s. At the time—the earliest dated photo in the album is from April 1956—the Vietnam War was in its early days with Eisenhower deploying MAAG to train the ARVN in late 1955. It is not clear what unit the photographer was with as only his training platoon 46 of the Second Recruit Battalion on Parris Island is identified; however this photo’s caption includes “Photo by MAAGâ€.

The album appears to be divided between the three locations each of which was strategic in the Cold War broadly and for American efforts in Vietnam in particular. It is highlighted by a series of photographs apparently from Taiwan showing agricultural workers planting and posing with their crops and children. In the 1950s under the China Aid Act the Sino-American Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction JCRR had launched a land reform financed by American aid and staffed by ROC scientists. In the 1960s this program expanded to crop diversification and the creation of the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center. These efforts towards agricultural development in Taiwan were like other US efforts in the region intended to contain the spread of Communism.1

Other photos from Taiwan include shots of the ships; men outside their tents vehicles and straw huts smoking and playing cards; some are city streets but most are of the countryside. Several notable photos show the Marines playing at being POWs: in one a man poses with his hands on his head next to a sign reading “POW AND CAPTURED / EQUIPMENT COMPOUND†and in another one soldier pretends to march his fellow at gunpoint.

Photos from Okinawa show military vehicles city streets and American and Japanese men—many Okinawans were employed by the US military during its occupation. Many scenes appear to show construction efforts with USMC-marked bulldozers and tractors driving around fields of dirt and rock in the countryside with a few of these showing Okinawa residents as well.

South Korea also played an active role in the Vietnam War. Photos from Korea show tanks and other vehicles along the coast and being loaded into ships American soldiers driving and posing in the countryside and several of village streets and residents.

Other subjects include target shooting transit on a ship captioned “WESTWARD HO / FAR EAST BOUND†and some that appear to be family and scenery shots in the US dated April 1961.

Overall the album provides a look not just at the activities of the Marine Corps in the early US advisory era of the Vietnam War but also the people and places of the US’s strategic activities in East Asia. Of interest to historians of the Vietnam War Cold War and US empire.

1 Leo Chu “‘A bloodless social revolution’: Land reform and multiple cropping in Cold War Taiwan 1950–1979†The history of crop science and the future of food 6 no. 5 September 2024 1104–1110. unknown
