‎[World War I]: [Texas]: Scheu, Fred H‎

‎Manuscript Journal Kept by Fred Henry Scheu a Texas Soldier in Training and Then Serving in France During the Final Year of World War I‎

‎Various locations in the United States and France 1918. Good. 60pp. of manuscript entries. Contemporary pocket notebook 5.25 x 2.5 inches with a small collection of news clippings and a few ephemeral items laid in. Moderate wear and soiling as expected hinges cracked but holding. A manuscript journal and daybook maintained by Corporal Fred Henry Scheu 1895-1974 during his training time in Oklahoma and his wartime service in France during the latter period of the First World War. Fred Scheu was born in Fayetteville Texas to German immigrants Fritz and Alwine Scheu later of Malone Texas. At the time of his enlistment and for a long period after the war Scheu was a clerk and station agent for various iterations of the Santa Fe Railway in Texas and Oklahoma. Scheu hailed from a large family himself but after marrying Ida Christine Ender Scheu the couple had just two children Idaleene and Fred Scheu Jr. Scheu passed away in Temple in 1974 and is buried in Waco Memorial Park in Robinson Texas.

Fred Scheu enlisted in the Army on February 26 1918 and was discharged just a little over a year later on April 16 1919. Between those two dates Scheu served in training at Camp Travis Texas and Camp Mills Long Island as a private in Company B of the 343rd Machine Gun Battalion. Scheu and his unit disembarked from Brooklyn New York on June 20 1918 headed for Liverpool. They served in various camps in England before crossing the English Channel and serving in numerous locations in France from early July until the end of the war and well after departing Brest France in March 1919. Scheu's journal opens with a detailed six-page timeline of his service from his enlistment until the end of his service in France which provided the preceding information.

Scheu's journal is not written in the traditional mode of a diary but rather in a few distinct sections which together paint a picture of his service in the war. The main record of his service is memorialized in an eight-page section titled "As Days Rocked By." This section is similar to the timeline described above also titled by Scheu "As Days Rocked By" but includes more detailed information on his time in France including some mentions of engagement with the Germans. Dated entries are brief but closely written without line breaks; a typical example of a few consecutive daily entries which take up just seven lines reads: "9-24-18. Arrived front lines near Pagney and Preney west side of Moselle River 4:15 AM. 9-25-18. German counter attack at 5AM. 9/26. Caught in German box barrage from 11AM until 5:20PM." Another sequence reads: "10/30/18. Arrived in woods large hill about 2 miles N-W of Romange. Fired barrage after barrage at 4:30AM. 10/1/18. Over with 360 Inf Co K Advanced 6 kilo to near little village St. Gerey. Heavy MG fire. 11/2/18. Advanced from St. Gerey 4 kilo to large hill. Little piece of shrapnel from shell that hurt Cpl. C.C.J. hit my foot." Scheu's timeline continues in much the same manner through the end of the war "Armistice signed 11/10/18" and beyond when he remained in France on guard duty and hiked and trained across the country. In addition to Scheu's detailed timeline he writes a similarly-detailed page on his experiences during the "Second Battle Argonne" in October 1918.

Scheu also includes a detailed seven-page account of a portion of his service entitled "Dedicated to the service Griesencourt France 9/20/18." He initials the ending of the account "F.H.S." The account reads like it was written to be read aloud. It begins "We came here today to be deloused 'Bath' after being relieved on St. Michel front. Most of our dead were buried -- some in valley 1 kilo south of Fey-en-Haye." Scheu then provides a much more detailed account of his battle experiences in September expounding on just a short portion of his timeline over the course of the remaining six pages. He recounts "enemy shells falling at intervals" "an enemy plane flying real low" details the death of Captain Dryson of Co. A "He set down beside a tree himself where he was killed when a shrapnel bursted in the tree and a piece came down hitting him in the head" and other stark details which took place amid the intense battle. In the course of his narrative Scheu reveals that he was "in charge of Intelligence Section 'Runners.'" After a slightly more detailed account of finding out that Captain Dryson had been killed Scheu ends his account on a rather forlorn note: "Where do we go from here -- Boys where do we go from here."

Peppered throughout the journal Scheu also includes other information about his service including a detailed listing of other members of Company B of the 343rd "Members My Organization Co B 343 MGBN"; several pages listing which American military units were present in Europe with another list totaling up the troop count of twelve company and division units of infantry artillery medical units and more; a few basic morning reports surrounding the Battle of St. Michel; a page listing "Headquarters Troops Landed by Division;" three pages of notes on the history leading up to the war; and more. In addition to the wartime content a few pages at the front of the journal were utilized as an address book before the war; among the entries is "Miss Ida Ender" whom Scheu would marry in June 1919 shortly after his return from France. A brief but nonetheless detailed account of one young Texas man's service during the final months of World War I with much to mine for historians and scholars alike. unknown‎

‎[Civil War]: [Wilson, Samuel Douglas]: Dodge, Joshua Giddings‎

‎Archive of Civil War-Date Letters and Other Business Correspondence from Businessman and Abolitionist Joshua Giddings Dodge with Important Content on Dodge's Freedmen's Bureau Activities‎

‎Mainly South Carolina but also Massachusetts and Florida 1865. Very good. Fifteen autograph letters signed totaling approximately fifty-six pages and about 7000 words. Original mailing folds minor overall wear. An insightful collection of original correspondence from Joshua Giddings Dodge written to his brother-in-law Samuel Douglas Wilson with information on family business matters in the South Civil War news his postwar life in Iowa and most importantly Dodge's work with the Freedmen's Bureau in South Carolina. Joshua Giddings Dodge 1813-1904 was born and raised in Massachusetts worked as a farmer in Illinois for awhile then returned to Massachusetts to work as a gilder and dealer in fine art. At the age of just 19 Dodge met William Lloyd Garrison and shortly thereafter became an important figure in the Boston abolitionist movement serving in leadership positions for the Middlesex New England and Massachusetts anti-slavery societies as well as the Boston Vigilance Committee. During the Civil War Dodge served as a superintendent in the Freedmen's Bureau in South Carolina and Florida where he was also appointed as supervisor of Mitchelville a town built for former slaves on Hilton Head Island. Following the war Dodge farmed in Iowa for a while before returning to Massachusetts to live out his remaining years.

Dodge's critical work for African Americans in South Carolina is covered in some depth in five letters in the present collection which also reveal his opportunistic business dealings in South Carolina and Florida. His earliest letter is dated November 8 1863 from the Graham Plantation on Hilton Head. Here Dodge discusses possible investment for himself and Wilson on Hilton Head should they wish to purchase the plantations for sale on the island. Dodge informs Wilson that "the Graham plantation contains 2000 acres appraised 4000 dolls & will be sold if no more than 2000 is bid but not less." He also discusses the value of buildings and "pine land." Dodge then details a long selection of items he wants Wilson to send to him noting that he "can always sell to the negroes what I dont want although the gov't does not allow me to make money out of them."

Dodge's next South Carolina letter here comes later on February 17 1865. In fact the final four of Dodge's South Carolina letters are dated between February 17 and April 21 1865 and contain critical information on his work with the Freedmen's Bureau and his business activities in the South. His February 17 letter is datelined from Atwood on Hilton Head; here Dodge discusses the fact that he has recently returned from Florida as he worked for the Freedmen's Bureau there too during this period. He also advises against opening a family business in Savannah in light of the impact of General Sherman's activities there: "Shermans Army has left in consequence that market is shattered & many are now suffering serious losses. Good I am told can be purchased for less there than here." Dodge discusses much about his business activities namely land purchases recently made in Florida. He notes that "Negroes are now at work in our cotton field to which I shall turn my attention for a little." Dodge's letter of March 13 is the shortest here at two pages and the first of two datelined "Office Supt. Freedmen;" in it he follows up with Wilson on expected shipments to him on Hilton Head and again mentions Sherman: "Business grows dark here as SHerman with his great army recedes & the Sect. of War is changed. Think business in my office is more lively perhaps than in any other."

Dodge's last two letters from South Carolina are easily the most important and content-rich letters present here. His penultimate letter dated March 27 is again datelined from the Freedmen's Bureau's Superintendent's Office. Dodge opens with detailed information on some sent letters that were apparently lost in the mails noting that he had written previously to Wilson about various matters including a meeting with General Rufus Saxton in Savannah and "His offer of an Island on which to colonize negroes" as well as another letter where Dodge informed Wilson of the sale of their cotton plantation and "my appointment as Gen'l Superintendent of Freedmen." Dodge writes that he has his hands full with superintendent duties and mentions that General Saxton has issued him a "free pass throughout the 'department of the South'" which he hopes to use more. Dodge concludes the letter with an important notice: "Today have been to Beaufort with Gen. Littlefield to see Saxton & get things fixed to our minds allowing me to be supervisor of Mitchelville as well as Superintendent of Hilton Head Island." Mitchelville was a town created in 1862 for former slaves. Residents of Mitchelville supported themselves largely through manual labor for the Union Army and eventually died out after northern authorities left during Reconstruction.

Dodge's final letter from South Carolina is dated April 21 1865 and contains the most content regarding his duties for the Freedmen's Bureau. He writes: "My hands are full of various matters. The care of the negroes here & at Mitchelville requires much time. Held court for them at the latter place today calling to my aid as associate judges two of the negroes. Since that adjournment have been riding about with Provost Marshall trying to secure justice for half dozen negroes who have been dispossessed of their lands." He also notes that he "purchased an entire island for 250 dolls" and deems it a great bargain; whether the island was purchased for personal enrichment or for the Freedmen's Bureau is unclear. Dodge then proceeds to discuss the "mixture of terribly sad & gloriously good news" received lately namely the assassination of President Lincoln the surrender of Lee and Johnson and the capture of Mobile. He wishes that "For the latter let us thank the Lord & Gen. Sherman. For the former invoke the wrath of the Almighty on the head of the Confederacy."

The present collection also includes two war-date letters from Dodge written from Florida during his brief sojourns there while working for the Freedmen's Bureau but also pursuing his own business interests. His first letter is datelined from Fernandine Florida on December 28 1864 with an additional letter written in pink ink between the lines of the earlier letter and dated December 30. In this letter Dodge relates to Wilson his attempts to purchase land in Florida for himself or the Atwood plantation. He also remarks on Fernandine: "It is a pretty town built on an Is. & considered a healthy location. The winter weather here is charming. Much like what we had in N.Y. in Sept. Gardens here look green & flourishing. Some are planting while others are gathering the fruit of their planting in the fall. Green peas are now being picked from some & notice peach trees in blossom. Flowers also of various kinds are not scarce. Water fowl of different kinds are abundant & birds are met with wheresoever we journey." He thereafter provides a detailed description of Dungeoness Dungeness Castle on Cumberland Island Georgia which he had recently visited. One of the aspects of the castle he describes are "a long row of brick chimneys marking the spot where the slaves were quartered" and he also mentions the Butler Plantation: "But little distance from Cumberland is the island on which was situated the cotton plantation of Pierce Butler made famous a few years since by the Tribune's account of the auction sale of the slaves & still more so since by the published letters of his wife Fanny Kemble Butler." Dodge's December 30 letter beginning on the third page here and written between the lines of the December 28 letter relates his reception of war news including Sherman's capture of Savannah the "glorious victory" at Nashville and the supposed death of Jefferson Davis.

Dodge's second letter from Florida emanates from St. Augustine about a month later on January 20 1865. He spends a great deal of the initial part of the letter expressing his sympathies and offering advice regarding a disastrous fire that happened at Wilson's premises in New York. He then swiftly turns to his recent experiences in St. Augustine describing the area thusly: "The house is a very good one. Comfortable & pretty but not extravagant. The grounds surrounding however are charmingly beautiful. Within reach of my hand at the window where I sit hang large golden oranges which barrels of them may be seen hanging on the trees in various parts of the grounds. Other fruit bearing trees are in reach of my eyes such as lime lemon citron olive date pomegranate guava fig grape peach banana plum & others while flowering shrubs add beauty to the picture & fragrance to the atmosphere."

The collection also includes five earlier letters written between August 9 and September 13 1863 when Dodge was still living in West Cambridge Massachusetts. These letters provide fuller context and greater detail regarding the family's mercantile business in the South. Notably in his first letter of August 27 1863 Dodge comments on his later position in South Carolina: "Am expecting letter this morning from a Boston Committee assigning me a position as servant to the darkies in S.C. Probably superintendent of plantations. Shall keep you fully advised." In his next letter Dodge comments on the impact of their business based on "whether Charleston is taken or not." In his last three letters Dodge writes about the family turpentine business Indian rubber "Boston spirits" and other goods commenting in his last letter that he plans to take to South Carolina "a lot of various trinkets cheap kinds for the darky children which may be distributed from time to time to my advantage." He then remarks that his "mission south is of course but an experiment & may soon reach a termination."

The final three letters in the archive were written by Dodge during his brief years as a farmer in Iowa. The first two letters are addressed from Dodge's residence in Grinnell Iowa and written to Wilson in the summer of 1868. He writes about personal finance matters harvesting "some 16 or 18 acres" of wheat local railroad matters his investments in South Carolina and more. His final letter is also written from Grinnell but addressed to Wilson's wife and his own sister Susan Wilson Dodge in December 1869. He discusses various family health education and business matters and most notably mentions a recent situation regarding a family member's flirtation with women's suffrage: "Am greatly pleased at what you say of Auntie in relation to the Women's Rights meeting. Hope she will become a confirmed convert & identify herself with the movement make acquaintance with its advocates & labors in its behalf."

An excellent archive containing vital information on Dodge's business activities some might call them profiteering amid his work for the Freedmen's Bureau in the South during the Civil War with much to mine for further researchers. unknown‎

‎[Carrier's Address]. [Civil War]‎

‎Address of the Carriers to the Patrons of the Republican Banner. December 25th 1861 caption title‎

‎Nashville 1861. Good plus. Small broadside approximately 11 x 7.25 inches. Creased along lower edge; ink burn causing a dime-size paper loss at upper right slightly affecting border plus a few additional stray ink marks. Later faint pencil annotations on blank verso. Moderate tanning and dust soiling. A scarce Confederate carrier's address published on Christmas in Nashville during the first year of the Civil War. The Republican Banner was formed in 1837 from a merger of two other periodicals and was the first permanent daily newspaper to serve the Nashville area as well as the first to operate its presses by steam. Tennessee officially seceded from the Union on June 8 1681 but Nashville surrendered to Gen. Grant's troops on February 23 1862 whereupon the Republican Banner suspended publication for the remainder of the war. As a result the present broadside is only carrier's address issued by the paper that is also a Confederate imprint. The text is printed in two columns with in a decorative border and the title is illustrated with a vignette of a newsboy making a delivery. The verse itself exults in the success of the Confederate rebellion thus far regaling its reader with the progress of secession and naming the recent battles that were Confederate victories including Fort Sumter Bull Run Bethel Lexington Leesburg Springfield Oak Hill and Belmont due to the supposed righteousness of the Southern cause and its superior fighting spirit:

"'Twas Southern valor won the undying name / Of conqueror o'er the unconquered till that hour. / And when upon Manassas' awful plain / The Federal hordes fled back aghast in woe / Not courage only heaped the field with slain / The majesty of right o'erwhelmed the foe."

The broadside also mentions somewhat optimistically England’s support of the Confederacy and names specific figures including Generals Lee Beauregard Johnson and President Jefferson Davis among a number of others as emerging Confederate heroes. Parrish & Willingham record a single copy at Vanderbilt and OCLC adds nothing further. A rare example of a Confederate carrier's address.
Parrish & Willingham 6498. unknown‎

They show ruined buildings military encampments injured soldiers and corpses on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border and in Veracruz. Also included are identified portraits of individuals such as Francisco Madero Pancho Villa on his deathbed and American General John Pershing. Many of the images are by El Paso photographer W.H. Horne who was one of the most prominent photographers of Border War incidents captured the Columbus Raid in New Mexico and photographed skirmishes near his home in El Paso. Also present are a short series of images by Cal Osborn who documented border incidents near Douglass Arizona and a group by William Hadsell William Hadsell an American resident of Veracruz who ran a Kodak store and was a prolific recorder of events there. Several Mexican photographers are represented as well. Many of the photos are quite gruesome in nature and show corpses in various states of decomposition as well as the aftermath of battles and executions but in all provide an arresting visual document of the interventions by the United States in Mexico during the 1910s. Powerful images of the Mexican Revolution and the resulting upheaval there and along the border with the United States. unknown‎

‎EL PASO TROUBLES IN TEXAS. A RESOLUTION OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSMITTING REPORTS OF THE COMMISSION APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE THE EL PASO TROUBLES IN TEXAS‎

‎Washington D. C.: Government Printing Office 1878 1878. TEXAS MEXICO. First edition. 8vo. Quarter leather and marbled paper over boards titles stamped in gilt on a leather spine label 159 pp. large folded map laid-in. Reports via House Ex. Doc. No. 93 45th Congress 2d Session May 28 1878. The "Salt War" was a complex range war that concerned the ownership of huge salt lakes at the base of the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas. The political struggle between two prominent men one Charles H. Howard the other Louis Cardis began in 1866 and culminated in the violent death of Cardis at the hands of Howard on the 10th of October 1877 in El Paso. This action eventually grew into an armed conflict between Mexicans and Tejanos against a Texas politician Howard who was supported by the Texas Rangers. The upshot was that the right of private factions to own what was once community assets the salt lakes in this case was established through force. The report is well-presented and in sound tight condition with the rare map laid-in that has light wear to a few fold points. Overall a near fine copy. Government Printing Office, 1878 hardcover‎

‎[Mexican-American War]‎

‎Manuscript Letter Written by Ramon Adame Warning of the Approach of 10000 "Perfidious American Enemies" from the North‎

‎San Luis Potosi: May 8 1847. About very good. 2pp. Previously folded. Short closed tear and minor loss at edges of old horizontal fold. Small area of light staining. Accomplished in a neat secretarial script. A fascinating letter from the governor of San Luis Potosí Ramon Adame that relates reports on the northern front of the Mexican-American War written two months after the Battle of Saltillo and just days after the American invaders had captured Puebla to the south. The letter is addressed to Ignacio de Mora y Villamil the General-in-Chief of Mexico's northern army presumably with the goal of spurring action from his forces with this new information. Adame discusses troop movements and defenses in Real de Catorce and Matehuala to the north and relates reports from Mexican officers that 10000 American reinforcements were approaching Saltillo and Monterrey:

"Los referidos Capitanes aseguraron que la proxima entrante semana hacian sino habian hecho ya movimiento en direccion a estos puntos las fuerzas enemigas en numero de ocho a die mil hombres: que de Agua Nueva al Saltillo hay de cinco a seis mil y el resto en Monterey. En Matehuala hoy corre la voz unisona que dentro de quince o a los mas veinte dias deben llegarse por estas villas los enemigos."

He then writes at length concerning the need to improve observation of the nefarious American enemies in order that news might be received quickly and directly and inquires as to how to pay for such agents:

"Al vecindario a una finita para acordar medidas salvadores y principalmente que por carensia de fondos se espensare a una o dos personas que observase los moviminetos y direccion de los perfidos enemigos norte americanos no logre reuniera y ya la esperienca acreditada que no tienen efecto esta clase de emerciones. Lo que traslado a V.S. para conocimineto del E.S. Gobernador y con el fin de que se sirva decirme de que fondos puede hacerse el gasto para los agentes vigilan los operaciones del enemigo."

A very interesting snapshot of the lack of resources and organization that led to rapid defeat in the Mexican-American War. ‎[Civil War]. [Mississippi]‎

‎Archive of Correspondence Belonging to William H. Tabb a Soldier in the Confederate 14th Mississippi‎

‎Various locations 1865. About very good. Forty letters approximately 96pp. Many with original envelopes. Light wear and soiling old folds. In a legible hand. Together with twelve additional family letters and two military commissions. A wonderful archive of correspondence written home from the Confederate lines by William Henry Tabb of the 14th Mississippi Infantry. William Henry Tabb 1837-1864 was the son of a minister at the Choctaw Agency in Oktibbeha County Mississippi. In April 1861 he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Agency Guards which were soon absorbed as a company in the 14th Mississippi Infantry. He was captured at Fort Donelson exchanged reached the rank of captain and was with his regiment when he suffered a fatal wound in the defense of Atlanta on August 5 1864.

Tabb begins his letters with optimism. On August 1861 after training in Corinth Mississippi the regiment met with a parade in Huntsville en route to eastern Tennessee: "The women men and children were down to see us and a regiment turned out to do us honor. Such cheering from beautiful young ladies all along our way is enough to make men brave." On October 22 1861 he recounts the recent death by disease of his brother Thomas Tabb in Marion Alabama also of the 14th Mississippi calling him "my dearest friend on earth."

Tabb was captured at Fort Donelson in February of 1862. Two of these letters were written from the Union prison at Johnson's Island near Sandusky Ohio. In May 1862 he writes: "We are not allowed to write what nor as much as we please. I have no friends to work for me see no indications of a general exchange or parole and it is almost impossible to escape from this island. It is amusing to see men one day Confederate officers and the next day cooking or around the wash tub. We have no servants. I am well treated have a plenty not a variety of food and clothing that we need issued to us." By September 24th he was back with his regiment in Mississippi: "The Yankees stole my shoes and I am wearing an old pr of boots. It appears that my conduct at Donelson has been very highly spoken of. Well I.tried to do my duty but I am sure I did nothing extra. Indeed our regt in my opinion fell little short of disgracing itself." He adds a word on the troubled home front situation: "Am sorry to hear that the Negroes have commenced stealing. I would very much like to see all that have behaved themselves and wd thrash those who have been stealing."

On April 11 1863 he describes the recent Battle of Ponchatoula which other companies in his regiment participated in: "Rollins was sent out with ten of the company on our right wing to try to flank them. As soon as he commenced firing on them we attacked their center and they broke to run. They were zouaves red pants we never could catch them." He lamented the loss of his enslaved servant on June 7th near Yazoo City: "I expected John to come to me. I have become attached to John and don't know how to get along without him. I look for him every day now." Tabb had some great stories about Grant's efforts to take Jackson the Mississippi capital from which Johnston's Confederates performed a stealth evacuation. On the 19th and 20th of July 1863 he wrote: "All of the boys wanted to stay and fight but Grant had 80000 men and we had only 30000. It is true we were behind breastworks but they were not good and the place could be easily flanked. Johnson prepared to evacuate the place from the time we got there. The Yankees knew it. Not a word was spoken not a command given. The Yankees knew nothing of our leaving. Some of our men did not know we had left and were left behind but overtook us. I hear that the Yankees commenced shelling the town the other morning after we left and kept it up til 9 o'clock when some of the citizens hoisted the white flag and surrendered the place. They were vexed to know that we had left them without their knowing anything about it."

Tabb had been away from the regiment for the start of the Atlanta campaign and on July 9 1864 he wrote: "I reached the command the evening of the 5th and found my company.8 miles from Atlanta. I found the men dirty and many of them with worn out clothes and not very good rations but all in good spirits and glad to see me. The people of Atlanta are leaving rapidly. They think the place will be evacuated. Do not be surprised if you hear it. We will not be whipped if we do leave it." This is Tabb's final letter in the collection. He was shot a month later. The group concludes with nine condolence letters and memorials. An October 1864 memoriam copied in 1894 recounted his death: "At the time he received the fatal shot he was commanding the brigade skirmishers & was just forming the line to proceed to the front. Though terribly mangled & in great pain he was calm & collected." He survived long enough to send farewell thoughts to his family and to regret "that I was not spared to see my country through her troubles." Also included are two of Tabb's military commissions in the Agency Rifles from the State of Mississippi: as Second Lieutenant on 24 April 1861 and as First Lieutenant on 25 December 1861. Both are signed by Governor John J. Pettus. In all a wonderful archive from a Confederate soldier who saw significant action and imprisonment during the war. unknown‎

‎[World War I]. [American Expeditionary Force, Siberia]. Soden, Lester W‎

‎Archive of Annotated Real Photo Postcards Picture Postcards and Photographs Amounting to a Narrative of an American Serviceman's Experiences in Russia During the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia As Well As Several Other Locations Around the World‎

‎Vladivostok Russia; China; Japan; Philippines; Cuba; Panama; and Egypt 1922. Very good plus. Ninety-six real photo postcards postcards and photographs each about 3.5 x 5.5 inches or slightly smaller. A very well-preserved group arranged in clear plastic sleeves in a brad-bound folder. An informative and ultimately unique collection of mostly annotated images documenting the military exploits of Lester W. Soden of Portland Oregon a Navy Midshipman serving in important locations in Asia and elsewhere in the years immediately following World War I. Soden sent the postcards and photographs home to various family members and friends in Portland Oregon. On the verso of the great majority of the postcards and photographs Soden has added vital typed or handwritten captions describing the subject location or other important information for each image as well as occasionally adding a personal note about them. Most of the images do not exhibit postmarks so were likely sent along by Soden with letters.

Most important among Soden's experiences here and encompassing almost half of the images forty-seven in fact was his time in Vladivostok Russia in 1918-1920 as part of the American Expeditionary Force Siberia. All but four of the postcards and photographs from Russia have typed captions on the verso providing critical background information on Soden's experiences. Soden's captions run from one line "Street scene in Vladdie" to a couple of lines "View of Vladivostok Siberia showing section of the city along the tracks of the Siberian railroad and one of the fine Russian churches in the back ground. This was taken but a week ago" to detailed much longer efforts for example: "Since coming to Siberia I have not seen a single saw mill where modern machinery such as power driven saws and etc was used. Here is a picture I took the other day in Vladivostok showing the Asiatic method of making lumber. The Chinamen do the work two men to a saw one on top of the framework that serves for a work bench the other stands on the ground and away they saw on logs turning out lumber of various thicknesses. When first I witnessed such ancient methods it seemed as tho I had stepped into a land of long ago but time has accustomed me to such sights in Siberia."

Soden's other images provide a deep picture of the Vladivostok area at a crucial time in its history picturing street scenes the funeral of "a deceased shipmate who died at Vladivostok" the Bay of the Golden Horn Japanese headquarters and a Japanese market in the city troops and ships from other Allied countries a YMCA train car serving coffee to soldiers a Bolshevik armored car stuck in the mud a portrait of Czech leader General Radola Gajda here spelled Gaida two images of Gajda's armored train car which he used in a failed attempt to occupy Vladivostok in 1918 and much more. Part of the Allied mission in Vladivostok involved protecting and providing passage for Czech troops who had fought for their own freedom against Lenin and the Russian revolutionaries. One of Soden's captions concern these freedom fighters: "Czech troops along the trans-Siberian R.R. coming into Vladivostok. They have some sort of decorations on the cars. You will notice the odd style of cars used with single axeled wheels that are not solid steel like the car wheels we have in the States where only double tracks are used. The cars here are very short tho once in a while one notices standard sized cars with double tracks identical to the ones used in the States in fact they were built there."

In addition to his time in Siberia Soden also served in China Japan Manchuria the Philippines Egypt Panama and Cuba. Seventeen postcards document his experiences in China as well as sixteen in Japan and Manchuria eight in the Philippines and the remainder from Egypt Panama and Cuba. Most of these images are also captioned on the verso picturing street scenes a Peking sawmill the city of Shanghai Tartar Wall Hankow a Dragon Festival in Hong Kong the Nanking Road and more in China. Most of the Japanese images show the celebrations in Tokyo for the return of Hirohito from a tour of Europe but also temples in Nikko the American fleet in Yokohama and two street views of Dairen City Manchuria. Other images depict a child's funeral "The other day I was lucky enough to see a native funeral one of the strangest sights I've ever seen. You would think it's a parade" and a Manila river scene in the Philippines; Guantanamo Bay in Cuba; the United Fruit Company's offices in Panama; and more. The only non-visual item included with the postcards and photographs is a black ribbon reading "U.S.S. Scorpion" presumably Soden's ship. unknown‎
