[Texas]: [Mexican Border War]
Vernacular Photograph Album Kept by D. Watson of the 8th United States Cavalry During the Texas Border War
Various locations in Texas 1918. Very good. Fifteen leaves illustrated with fifty-five mounted photographs and a few ephemeral clippings identifying locations. Oblong octavo. Contemporary black cloth string-tied. Light soiling to covers. Minor wear to some photographs but overall a handsome selection. A unique collection of vernacular photographs collected by a soldier in the 8th U.S. Cavalry identified simply as D. Watson serving in southwest Texas during the Mexican Border War. The first two pictures emanate from Quartermaster Training Camp in Jacksonville Florida. This is followed by one photo from Barron Field in Everman Texas. The remaining photographs document Watson's time in Ruidosa Texas an unincorporated Texas-Mexico border town in Presidio County about a hundred miles from Terlingua. Here Watson includes photographs of himself and other soldiers and their horses posed in front of old stone structures in orange groves amongst canyons in front of an automobile and more with images of Mexican adobes a wagon advertising an "electric light company" the cavalry preparing their horses scenes of the wilds of southwest Texas and the E.H. Carlton company store. E.H. Carlton was also a principal in the Carlton Van Loan Company an oil speculation firm active in the 1920s. An eclectic and intriguing selection of Texas-Mexico border images from an important period in history. unknown

[Spanish-American War]
Broken Run of Twenty-Two Issues of "The Nation
New York: The Nation 1898. Very Good -. New York: The Nation 1898. Twenty-two volumes; quartos 30.5cm.; uniformly stitched self-wrappers. Collection comprises the following issues: Nos. 1714 May 5 1898 1716-19 1721 1724 1730-2 1734 1736-7 1746-7 1751-2 1754 1762-3 1766 & 1770 June 1 1899. Condition ranges from Near Fine to Good only with a few of issues starting to split at spine two issues with upper covers separated but present and the earliest issue with rather large loss along bottom margin affecting text of the publisher's ads; additionally most have contemporary pencil marginalia to upper covers.

A substantial collection covering the major events of the Spanish-American War the earliest issue opening with General Dewey's "annihilation" of the Spanish fleet in the Philippines in early May. However as sick and wounded troops began to return and the conditions of the war came to light the weekly news magazine's tone shows a marked shift. Within a couple of weeks the magazine's pro-expansionist articles had shifted entirely in the opposite direction and by September 8th the opening segment begins: "The sad condition of our returning troops has raised this inquiry to the minds of those whom Mr. Lincoln called 'the plain people': If we cannot administer affairs in our own territory better than Camp Algers Thomas Wikoff and Black have been administered how are we likely to administer the Philippine Islands ten thousand miles away" Indeed the coverage of the Treaty of Paris on December 10th speaks to the disillusionment wrought by the war. The opening segment on December 15th begins: "The treaty has been signed at last and we are in possession of Cuba Porto Rico and as much of the Philippines as the Spaniards possessed which is not much. [MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR]
Autograph letter signed from a sailor to his wife during the Mexican-American War
1847. Folded sheet. 10 x 7 3/4 inches. 4pp. Old fold lines. Central fold running the horizontal length of the sheet reinforced. An affectionate 1847 Mexican-American War naval letter from a sailor aboard the U.S. store ship Fredonia off Anton Lizardo describing the fall of Tabasco and the secure occupation of the Veracruz coast and discussing a hoped-for transfer to Maury’s Naval Observatory: an intimate on-the-spot glimpse of how large strategic events were experienced and understood by an individual sailor in the Gulf Squadron.

A very affectionate letter from a sailor to his wife back home full of pining declarations of love and devotion. The sailor Gregory notes that he is safe and likely to stay that way as they are at a good anchorage and the coast has been entirely secured. He indicates that she should direct her letters both to Vera Cruz and Pensacola and that either way they will surely find him with the Gulf Squadron. He also mentions a possible posting to the Naval Observatory which would bring him home to his dearest Jenny. "The frigates 'Potomac' & 'Raritan' have both sailed for home some days ago but we had no opportunity of writing by them as the former sailed from Sacrificios & the latter from Tobasco. You will doubtless have heard long ere you receive this all about the taking of Tobasco. The whole coast is now in our possession and there remains not the slightest chance of any more fighting for the squadron. I must not omit to mention my sweet little wife the Gibbon Edwards Kennard & myself have received an answer from Mr. Maury respecting our application for the Observatory. He says he is very anxious to have us all back again and that he would that day 22d of April go to see the Honl. Secretary and try to get us ordered; but he said he had but faint hopes of success for it was known at the same time at the Dept. that we were very short of officers in this squadron. unknown
