[Album - World War One] BEAUFORT, JM DE (JACQUES ALBERT UILENBROEK). J M
EXTRAORDINARY WORLD WAR I ALBUM OF THE BELGIAN FRONT.
Album 60 pp recto and verso "Autographs and Sketches" stamped in gilt to front cover with approx. 35 gelatin silver prints laid in and letters maps diagrams postcards and foreign press clippings tipped in label "J.M. de Beaufort / Author Soldier War Correspondent late with the Belgian Army" attached to front cover de Beaufort's business card taped to inner front cover photographs laid in to front and back covers. Many pages loose or stained some loss to three leaves edgewear and toning throughout. Covers worn with tape remnants. Sold as is.

Belgium circa October-December 1914. At that point the Belgian Army had only recently entered the war and was being routed by the German Army's superior numbers. Belgium's high command cleverly devised a plan to flood the vicinity of Furnes to keep the Germans at bay. There are several fairly detailed hand-drawn diagrams in pen colored pencil and pencil of the flooding plan. The photographs in the journal mainly depict Belgian and French soldiers; de Beaufort is visible in several. One image shows two unexploded bombs with "aeroplane bombs" written on its verso in pencil beside de Beaufort's note about how they landed close to his room in Furnes. Other photographs show bombed-out buildings. There are cartoonsmostly anti-Germandrawn at various points throughout. De Beaufort also known as Count de Beaufort was quite an elusive figure. His real name was Uilenbroek and he was a Dutchman thought to have been a deserter. He came to Chicago in 1909 married a steel magnate's daughter and entered show business. By 1912 he was divorced and took up newspaper work; he became known as the "Dude Reporter." See American Cinematographers in the Great War 1914-1918 2015.
unknown

FIRST EDITION BOUND FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS REPLETE WITH ILLUSTRATIONS AND MANY VERY FINELY COLOURED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN SILVER AND GOLD. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 which began with the Japanese naval attack on Port Arthur had repercussions throughout the world. Germany had helped to nudge both powers towards the war and had also managed to alienate both belligerents. She had used tremendous diplomatic pressure against the Japanese to force them to relinquish Port Arthur to the Chinese who then leased it to the Russians. Simultaneously the newly emerged nation of Japan was training its army officers in Germany. German involvement in the conflict led to war scares with both France and Great Britain causing Germany to quickly arrange an unwanted international conference at which they found themselves distrusted and isolated.
The war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth arranged by U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt. The Russo-Japanese War won for the U.S. a place at the table of superpowers and a new respect in world diplomacy but for Germany it earned nothing but suspicion. In August 1905 the future chief of the general staff Helmuth von Moltke noted in his diary that "all the other nations are pretty well united in reviling Germany. They all assert that we are disturbing the peace."' Even Baron Friedrich von Holstein the chief architect of foreign policy from 1890 to 1906 admitted the bankruptcy of German diplomacy. "In short" he wrote to a friend "in the present atmosphere it seems to me that the correct and dignified thing to do would be to act like Russia after the Crimean War and calmly to withdraw into ourselves." The front cover contains an area of fading or discoloration. A mild water stain line is visible on front end papers; pages are generally clean but lightly age-toned. George Lunt 1803-1885 was the U.S. district attorney for Massachusetts during President Zachary Taylor's administration. In 1857 he became editor of the conservative "Boston Courier." DAB. Lunt's book collects four anti-liberal essays which were originally published in the "Courier." Among them are the following - a diatribe against reformer Theodore Parker a refutation of a lecture given by Ralph Waldo Emerson a refutation of a pro-suffrage lecture given by Georg W. Curtis and an article entitled the "Philosophy of Abolition." PROVENANCE: Inscribed by Rev. Luther Farnham to Rev. Thomas Smyth on front blank page. A three page letter written by Farnham dated "Boston Feb. 2 1858" is also attached to the verso of the front free end paper. The letter is addressed to "Rev'd dear Sir" presumably Smyth. Rev. Luther Farnham 1816-1897 authored a booklet survey entitled "A Glance at Private Libraries" 1855 "the first study of its kind to be done in the United States." See Basbanes "A Gentle Madness" p.155-56. Farnham was also Secretary of the Southern Aid Society a missionary organization which preached the Gospel to poor whites and blacks down south. The letter concerns Farnham's intent to write a series of articles on the history agriculture religion and education of the southern states in the hopes of promoting better feelings between north and south. Rev. Thomas Smyth was presumably the well known Presbyterian theologian who lived in Charlestown South Carolina. He is mentioned in Farnham's library survey as possessing about 17000 books. for G. The final report on the relocation internment and incarceration of Japanese immigrants and of Japanese Americans following the Japanese Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941.

While the book's chronology begins in January 1942 the chapter called "The Price of Prejudice" notes that the FBI reported on December 11 that more than 1200 Japanese aliens had already been arrested.
