È un pretesto da parte della protagonista per recuperare la cultura nativa, trovando punti di contatto con le atmosfere e i luoghi scoperti, e il modo per ridare senso a una nuova identità da indossare.

Per le donne resta un mistero, ma forse un po' anche per gli uomini, almeno a giudicare dalle perplessità del narratore quando Cavanaugh, un uomo di successo, senza crepe, lo invita a unirsi a «una normale occasione sociale al di fuori del lavoro e del matrimonio». E finisce così una sera nella taverna di uno sconosciuto, insieme ad altri sei, tutti non più giovani ma certo non ancora vecchi. Ognuno di loro ha un passato non abbastanza lontano per essere davvero dimenticato. Ognuno ha il ricordo di una donna posseduta come non si è posseduta nessun'altra. Ognuno ha perso qualcosa che teme di non poter trovare mai più. Ognuno sente il bisogno di confessare il proprio fallimento. Nonostante sia stato uno scrittore tutto sommato poco prolifico, già in vita Leonard Michaels era stato accostato ai grandi maestri della tradizione ebraica suoi contemporanei o poco più vecchi, come Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Norman Mailer e Philip Roth. Michaels aveva un dono: ogni cosa che scriveva prendeva vita. La profondità con cui sapeva esplorare il cuore degli uomini, la sicurezza con cui si muoveva negli ambigui territori delle relazioni sentimentali, il controllo magistrale che aveva di ogni elemento della scrittura, ne hanno fatto l'oggetto, negli Stati Uniti, di un culto tanto profondo quanto diffuso anche a quindici anni dalla morte (avvenuta nel 2003).

"Lo prolunga e, come il ragno, si sospende a un filo di seta, lasciandosi portare dal soffio poetico, senza saper neanche lui dove, con un abbandono di tutto il suo essere". Con un effetto, quanto mai tonico, di spiazzamento e di sorpresa: che prendano spunto da un fatto di cronaca, da una lettura o da un'esperienza personale, che descrivano il volto di una fanciulla o trattino di esotismo, che si presentino come brevissime annotazioni o lunghe riflessioni (sulla musica, sulla scrittura ideografica, sulla pittura rupestre, sui disegni infantili), abbiamo l'impressione, leggendo questi testi, di vedere per la prima volta ciò di cui parlano.

Viaggio in Gran Garabagna
br. In Francia Henri Michaux è già un classico consacrato nella "Plèiade", anche se è un classico piuttosto inclassificabile. "Viaggio in Gran Garabagna" (1936) è uno dei suoi primi libri, e forse il più felice tra quelli che ha scritto. È un viaggio in una terra che non esiste, attraverso popolazioni immaginate, che corrispondono ognuna a un umore, una mania, un tic. Gli Hiviniziki (ad esempio) sono la nevrastenia, la precipitazione e la fretta fatte popolazione; gli Emangloni sono tardi, contemplativi e facili al pianto come certi nostri stati d'animo depressivi. Un libro rasserenante per chi lo legge, e avventuroso; lontano erede dei "Viaggi di Gulliver" e del "Gargantua".
