Sono loro il suo ironico punto di partenza per osservare la vita da un'altra ottica. La lentezza; la poesia dell'attesa; il collezionismo come bisogno di controllare il caos dell'esistenza; gli altri grandi irrequieti, Chatwin, Lawrence, Kundera: attraverso divagazioni e aneddoti si resta presi nella rete di un'incantata affabulazione, fino a scoprire che "tutti nell'intimo siamo collezionisti di mosche". Pittore di talento, sembra sempre nel posto giusto al momento giusto, eppure lui la strada per il successo non la troverà mai, e morirà solo e alcolizzato a Bordighera nel 1935. Che cosa l'ha spinto alla deriva? Per scoprirlo, Sjöberg incontra le nipoti svedesi di Anton, scava nella famiglia matriarcale della moglie Eva Adler, ricostruisce complessi alberi genealogici e intreccia storie di carriere ben più luminose: Modigliani, Picasso, Derain, Brecht, Cendrars. Indulgendo alle divagazioni autobiografiche, botaniche, perfino filateliche, lascia spesso la strada maestra per produrre nei détours inaspettate esplosioni di senso, cui la sua consueta ironia elegantemente sottrae enfasi. The stakes are raised when Venus learns that two major presidential candidates are each scheduled to give a speech at the Grand Coulee Dam. There's plenty of suspense here punctuated with lyrical passages on the plight of the salmon a drowned waterfall a lost Indian tribe and other ruminations.
