Summary; Edward Jerman a metropolitan master-craftsman was the designer of some of the most prestigious secular buildings in the City of London following the Great Fire of 1666. Considered 'the City's most able known artist' by the Mercers' Company in 1667 Edward Jerman was invited by a committee composed of the Corporation of the City and the Mercers' Company to make designs for the new Royal Exchange. The halls of the 'Twelve Great Companies' had also been destroyed by the Fire along with thirty-five halls of the Livery Companies. Having designed four of the new livery buildings Jerman was now commissioned to design four more for the prestigious Twelve. These companies were the wealthiest and most superior whose members included the most eminent citizens. Thus Edward Jerman was chosen as architect by many of the rulers of the City an august body of men of authority and privilege who controlled its affairs both politically and commercially. Together with Sir Christopher Wren whose City work was mainly confined to ecclesiastical architecture Jerman was responsible for the most important City buildings of the post-Fire period. This book celebrates that contribution. Jerman's major designs - the Royal Exchange eight Livery Company halls and St Paul's School - received acclaim from contemporary critics. His town planning for the Goldsmiths' Company was innovative and his designs for the Lord Mayor's pageants exemplified his versatility and ingenuity. His palette was wide and the City of London in the third quarter of the seventeenth century proved fertile ground wherein Jerman's artistic talent could take root and flourish. Includes bibliographical references. Summary; In their different mediums Henry Moore 1898-1986 and Francis Bacon 1909-1992 created unforgettable images of the human figure. The distinctive visual languages that each artist developed over more than half a century were marked by a growing simplicity and monumentality of form. Their perspective differed: Moore clung to a belief in humanism while Bacon espoused a post-humanist nihilistic view of the world. In expressing their visions of humanity the two artists had very different approaches: Bacon working from the outside in disintegrating and dissolving form; Moore from the inside out pushing anatomical structure to the surface. If Bacon's images suggest flux chance and the arbitrariness of existence Moore's sculptures have been interpreted as universal symbols of strength and endurance. Bacon and Moore first exhibited together in a group exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in London in which Bacon showed his Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion 1944 propelling him into the limelight for the first time. Moore showed two sculptures from the 1930s and fourteen wartime drawings some of which anticipate the theme though not the savage imagery of Bacon's triptych. Exhibiting together in a commercial gallery was repeated twice in the 1960s when Moore and Bacon were both represented by Marlborough Fine Art. These joint shows extensively reviewed in the press gave critics a chance to compare the artists' radical approaches to the human figure which were seen as complementary rather than conflicting. Summary; The founder of the Silvermine Guild a successful teacher illustrator and master of ceramic and graphic art Bernhard Gutmann received serious critical acclaim during his lifetime and his work was shown in major exhibitions and museums. But since his death in 1936 his work has gone unnoticed largely because he did not need to sell his art. His works remained in the family rather than going to the collectors museums and galleries that would have introduced him to a general audience. Born in 1869 and educated in Germany Gutmann arrived in the United Stated at the age of 23. From modest immigrant beginnings-he moved to Virginia to work as an electrician-he rose to be the first superintendent of drawing in the Lynchburg public schools. After his marriage to Bertha Goldman granddaughter of the founder of the investment banking firm Goldman Sachs he was free to concentrate on his art alone. Described during his ""rediscovery"" in 1988 as ""an American Gauguin"" Gutmann had a great influence on American regional art: he organized the still functioning Lynchburg Art Club in Virginia and later assisted in the foundation of the thriving Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan Connecticut.
