Imperial Japanese Army Medical Corps; Nishimura Company; Taisho Photo Factory
Holy War Commemoration Photo Album: Isa's Forces Fukaya's Forces Text in Japanese
Shanghai: Nishimura Company 1939. Edition not stated. Quarto 26.5cm; black simulated leather stamped in red and gilt in brown paper slipcover; unpaginated photo-illustrated plates w/ rice paper overlays. Wear minor scuffs and soiling to boards; toning and foxing intermittent throughout text especially on overlays; some overlays creased or torn. Slipcover worn and chapped with abrasions and two large one repaired tears across front panel. Photo-illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Very Good in Good slipcover. All text in Japanese with some obsolete/antiquated kana/kanji oriented right to left. This is a privately-issued commemorative yearbook-type photo album shashin-cho published on behalf of the Imperial Japanese Army medical forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. Specifically it was produced for those who served under military physician captains/commanding officers Nobuo Isa and Tetsuo Fukaya who were stationed in or near Shanghai at the time.

By July 1939 the Imperial Japanese Army was beginning to feel the impact of its own mounting casualties and costs; the Chinese Red Army would launch a major offensive later that November. While the Japanese occupation of Shanghai was notably brutal there is little evidence of violence in this album. However some photographs do depict the aftermath of battle with ruined buildings and soldiers being treated for injuries. Other subjects are mundane in nature: Staff and group portraits hospitals and other facilities physicians at work company events and ceremonies. Also includes photographs of Shanghai and a fold-out map of the Hangzhou Bay area. Apparently not cataloged in OCLC or available commercially as of November 2019. Nishimura Company unknown books

INDIA ARMY, GENERAL STAFF BRANCH
Operations in Waziristan 1919-1920. Confidential. Compiled by the General Staff Army Headquarters India 1921. The title-page reports the catalogue number and location of what may be the original report: "Catalogue no. C.W. 4 - Case no. 8987 N.S.". Serial No. 924 stamped on the title-page.
Calcutta Superintendent of Government Printing 1921. Tall 8vo. Contemporary half calf green cloth sides gold-stamped red spine labels. Size 10 x 6.5 inches In good condition. Some minor rubbing on edges two small nicks on spine labels. Corners a little bumped a few minor marks on cloth boards. Military inscription on front endpaper. Inside some foxing else generally clean & tight. X 187 Pages 1 pp. With frontispiece 31 plates 7 maps 3 in pocket on inside of back board and 8 panoramas mostly folding. First edition of the British-Indian army s official account of the 1919-20 Waziristan campaign marked "Confidential" on the title-page. The operations followed unrest that arose in the aftermath of the Third Anglo-Afghan War; they were conducted in the mountainous region of Waziristan now in Pakistan by British and Indian forces against the fiercely independent Waziri and Mahsud tribesmen that inhabited it. Since the 1870s the British government agencies were assiduous in compiling internally published histories of their military frontier operations with the intention of providing a "valuable guide" to such British commanders and policy makers as "might have future dealings with these turbulent neighbours" as the Punjab Government phrased it in 1866. INDIAN ARMY
Standing Orders 2/15th Punjab Regiment.
Allahabad: The Pioneer Press 1931. First edition one of 125 copies only. The orders for this unit first raised during the Indian Rebellion and subsequently seeing extensive service worldwide lay down regulations across a wide range of subjects. It was signed by Captain Mark Bwye of the 10th Battalion 15th Punjab Regiment a sister unit. We have traced no copies in institutions or in commerce. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857 Captain H. T. Bartlett raised the 18th Regiment of Punjab Infantry at Peshawar. Under Lord Kitchener's reforms in 1903 it was reconstituted as the 26th Punjabis then in 1922 it was merged with four other units to form the 15th Punjab Regiment. This was made up of five battalions of which the 2nd Battalion was the former 26th Punjabis. Over the course of its history from 1857 they fought in the Second Afghan War Third Anglo-Burmese War both world wars and the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. In 1931 they were stationed in Mingaladon Burma and commanded by Lieutenant Colonel O. D. Bennett. Octavo. Battalion badge in silver to p. 292 diagram and tables some folding in text; interleaved with blanks for notes as issued. Original red half cloth grey green cloth boards lettered in gilt and decorated with battalion crest in silver. Marginal pencil notes to appendix. Binding variably soiled spine sunned stained and rumpled tips a little worn: a very good copy. hardcover
