‎"Les Réflexions et souvenirs du chevalier de Ray, que vient de publier M. Lucien Mouillard, contiennent des observations vraiment intéressantes sur les généraux français ou au service de la France pendant les deux guerres de Sept ans, sur l'esprit du soldat français dans les armées de Louis XV, sur la réforme de la gendarmerie de France en 1763-1769. Quant au chevalier de Ray lui-même, nous ne savons presque rien de lui, car il s'efface modestement derrière les autres, et l'éditeur, qui a pris la peine de nous donner un résumé des campagnes en Bohême, Bavière, Allemagne, Italie et Flandre de 1742 à 1748, en Hanovre et en Hesse de 1756 à 1762, n'a pas jugé utile de lui consacrer plus de quatre ou cinq pages. Dans ses Réflexions, le chevalier de Ray se montre à nous comme un observateur intelligent, bien qu'un peu superficiel, et bienveillant, bien qu'il sentît fortement les injustices dont il avait souffert pendant sa carrière active ; mais, ce qui est touchant, c'est son amour pour le soldat, dont il aime à rappeler les traits d'endurance, d'héroisme ou de bonté, vertus qu'à ses yeux la guerre seule était capable de développer, car « la paix est le temps de l'apathie et de l'indifférence pour son prochain » (p. 42). Cette sorte de philosophie de la guerre n'est point banale."
