‎Edition originale rare de cette magnifique publication, l'une des plus belles du genre pour la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Une seconde édition, ou plutôt un second tirage, sera publiée en 1653 à l'adresse d'Amsterdam, et sera encore reprise en 1656.Il faut signaler une particularité de notre exemplaire, relative à la présence d'une double page 21 : entre la page 20 et la page 21 du texte suivi (correspondant aux f. C2 et C3) a été insérée une autre page 21, au verso vierge, et intitulée Le Troisieme plan d'infanterie, avec une figure en bas du recto. Cet ajout n'est signalé dans aucun exemplaire des dépôts publics français.Né à Norwich, David de Solemne exerçait les fonctions de maréchal des logis d'Ernest-Casimir de Nassau-Dietz (1573-1632, stadhouder de Frise, Drenthe et Groningue), et des Etats Généraux des Provinces-Unies au moment de la publication de l'ouvrage. Il faut bien s'entendre sur la nature exacte des fonctions de maréchal des logis : loin de ne constituer, comme aujourd'hui, qu'un grade subalterne des sous-officiers, elles correspondaient à celles de chef d'état-major d'une armée. Quoique peu valorisée par les contemporains, elles étaient tout à fait essentielles : s’occupant principalement de l’organisation des marches et des campements et en étant, de fait, la principale source d’informations géographiques de l’armée, le personnage du maréchal des logis général assistait régulièrement aux conseils de guerre auprès du général d’armée et pouvait alors influencer largement ses choix stratégiques.Notre exemplaire provient de la prestigieuse collection du bibliophile Gustave de Ridder (1865-1945) ancien trésorier de la Société des bibliophiles du Palais, dont le fer au chevalier (à pied pour cet ouvrage, mais on le trouve parfois à cheval) apparaît sur le premier plat.L'essentiel de sa collection de militaria se trouve aujourd'hui au Cabinet des Estampes de la BnF depuis 1946, mais certains ouvrages, dont notre suite, ont fait l'objet d'une sélection personnelle restée jusqu'alors en mains privées.Bel exemplaire. - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT - LIEN DE PAIEMENT, NOUS CONSULTER.‎
