Fort Benning GA: US Army Infantry School 1974. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Very good. The format is approximately 7 inches by 5 inches. 18 2 pages plus covers. Illustrations. In military terminology a squad is among the smallest of military organizations and is led by a non-commissioned officer. NATO and U.S. doctrine define a squad as an organization "larger than a team but smaller than a section." while U.S. Army doctrine further defines a squad as a "small military unit typically containing two or more fire teams." In American usage a squad consists of eight to fourteen soldiers and may be further subdivided into fireteams. This training circular reflects the state-of-the-art the state-of-the-knowledge and the state-of-the-practice after the end of major combat operations during the Vietnam War. This training circular was prepared by the US Army Infantry School Fort Benning Georgia to introduce new doctrine on dismounted tactical movement of rifle squads when not in contact with the enemy. Infantry combat has two chief requirements--to more and to fight. A squad spends far more time moving than fighting. On this basis alone it is important to use the best possible techniques for moving. Howerver movement techniques become even more important when it is recognized that a moving unit normally makes contact with the enemy at a time and place of the enemy's choosing. In short the situation at the moment of contact is designed by the enemy to be to his advantage. to reduce this enemy advantage the squad leader must us the least number of men to find the enemy and when enemy contact is expected he must always have one fire team in a carefully selected position ready to fire to cover the movement of the other team. In following these rules a simple system of squad movement must be used which employs each fire time in a standard formation. The distance between fire team formations--and the ability of each one to support the other by fire--vary with the terrain and tactical situation. US Army Infantry School paperback
