On p.4 of the bifilium there is a signed statement in William Collins's hand the auditor: 'Theise are the Auntient Rentes of the principall Impropriations of the Deane & Chapter of Sarum i.e. Salisbury according to the survey 26 H. 8 i.e. of the 26th year of Henry VIII = 1534-5. What sume they are improved appeareth not but neither are the values of Bedwym Bedwyn Okborne Ogbourne & Uphaven Upavon expressed.Wm Collins Auditor'. About 70 Prebends Tithes and Rectories are listed with their rents not in Collins' hand some crossed out others added in Collins hand. The first in the list is "Lavington Prebend ye yearly rente is xxxixpounds ." Mere . Warmister Prebend etc rentes given. Places concluding Rectorie include Homington Cricklade those concluding Tithes include New Forest Windsor Forest. The list is therefore of the churches in Wiltshire that belonged to the dean and chapter of Salisbury showing the amount of annual rent the incumbents had to pay in order to hold them according to a survey carried out in 1534-5. William Collins was the Earl of Salisbury's auditor who seems to have been active from the 1620s to the 1640s. The hand certainly fits this period. It might be dated to the 1640s perhaps in the context of an attempt by Parliament to assess the income of the Salisbury dean and chapter after disestablishment in 1646. 1630s or 1640s[?] unknown‎

‎Thomas Garth Equerry to George III and alleged lover of the King's daughter Princess Sophia. Autograph Letter in the third person to 'Mr Ford' discussing the king's forthcoming movements.‎

‎'The Kings Mews Tuesday August 13th 1799'. 1p 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Reads 'Major General Garth presents his Compliments to Mr Ford and informs Him that Their Majesties and Princesses stop to breakfast at Hartford Bridge – and once afterwards for five Minutes at Stoney Cross – The Compton Arms – between Rumsey & Kingwood.' Postscript: 'The Majr Genl: supposes Mr Ford is acquainted that The King leaves Windsor 17th next.' Ford – the son of Queen Charlotte's physician James Ford – was clearly enquiring with regard to the king's itinerary for security purposes. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter 1923-1981 whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' 1969 suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'. ‎General Sir William Napier Irish soldier historian of the Peninsular War. Autograph Letter Signed 'W N' to 'Macdonald' declining to ask for rank of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath with resentment towards Admiral Sir William Parker.‎

‎'Rotterdam Dec 13' on paper with watermark date 1830. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition on lightly-aged paper with minor traces of tape from mount adhering along one edge. Endorsed 'Genl. Wm. Napier'. On wove paper with watermark 'CANSELL 1830'. The letter - written with energy and some resentment - refers to Admiral Sir William Parker 1781-1866 who was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1815. It is headed 'Private & Confidential' and begins: 'My dear Macdonald In reflection I decided not to ask for the rank you suggested because I thought it might be considered a personal favor & not an act which conferred personal dignity on one of the King's Agents & I detest asking for favors especially from persons unwilling to grant them.' He continues: 'Lord Palmeston ought to see & judge himself whether or not the public service is benefitted by such rank being conferred my own belief is that when An Agent goes amongst these Military Nations where Military rank is alone considered the higher the rank of the Agent the easier he can do his duty.' Nevertheless Napier will not ask '& without asking nothing is given in England'. He continues: 'I think I was ill used in not having the 2d Order of the Bath given to me when it was given to Adl. Parker. We were colleagues on the same station he a New Admiral I a Brigadier General with fuller powers than he had for when two Ministers like Asses sent our fleet to Sea where it remained at a great expense from near 2 to the Nation I alone had the Power to call it into the Tagus & did call it into the Tagus on my own responsiblity which act was approved of by the Ministry. However they gave Parker the Bath & not me but I certainly shall not ask for it. Nor have I ever nor shall I ever complain of not having it & say to to you & to you alone in strict Confidence'. ‎General Sir Kenneth Anderson commander of British First Army during Operation Torch. Autograph Letter Signed 'Kenneth Anderson' discussing Kenya the 'severe crisis' in Britain conscription. With ANS from recipient Brigadier H. H. Dempsey‎

‎Dun Eaglais Kippen Stirlingshire Scotland. 14 February 1947. Dempsey's note dated 10 August 1960. Dempsey's obituary in The Times explains how 'In April 1945 he was appointed Brigadier I/C Administration East Africa Command' holding the position into the following year and retiring in December 1947 on account of ill health. For a full account of Dempsey's military career see his entry in Catholic Who's Who vol.35 1952. In an eight-line Autograph Note Signed at the end of Anderson's letter Dempsey states that Anderson 'had been my personal & immediate superior as G.O.C. in C. East Africa Command when I was his Brigadier I/C Administration. He became Governor of Gibraltar and has been dead some time now having himself got a coronary thrombosis.' The present item is an Air Mail letter. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium on blue paper. Addressed to 'Brigadier M. C. sic Demspey CBE No 87 General Hospital Nairobi Kenya Colony'. Anderson has confused Dempsey with the more illustrious General Sir Miles Christopher Dempsey 1896-1969.Anderson begins by condoling with Dempsey on 'a return of your thrombosis': 'it is no use going on kicking against the pricks and you must I fear face the need for a quiet life'. He next describes the weather in Scotland 'our 21st day of hard frost & snow'. A report on his wife's trip to the metropolis turns into an attack on the postwar Labour government: 'Kathleen is in London trying to buy clothes by candle & torch light and shivering in her hotel. I fear this country is in for a very severe crisis made worse by the theories & idealisms of the Govt which fiddles while Rome does not burn.' After more domestic news he reports: 'I saw Brown and also Fisher while in London at the end of last month. The War Office continues hopeful about all their grand schemes for Kenya: but it will be a miracle if they get 1/10th of the present estimated cost. And on the same lines I dont see how the country can carry a large Army and 18 months conscription. We are so hard pressed economically that I think it is fanstastic to try & carry such a Burden.'
