Eastburn Kirk and Co 1814. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Brig Gen. Duncan McArthur's Orders to Attend General Hull's Court Martial A remarkable document from the Court Martial Brig. General William Hull following his surrender of Detroit which resulted in a death sentence for cowardice. Although his sentence was later remitted General William Hull is the only U.S. general to be sentenced to death by an American court-martial. This copy of the court martial transcript belonged to Hull's second in command Brig Gen. Duncan McArthur and includes the actual hand-written orders commanding him to attend and testify. McArthur's testimony was an essential and central part of the trial filling the entirety of pages 47 to 73. In it as well as numerous contemporary accounts his outrage against Hull's conduct as Commander of the Army of the Northwest during the War of 1812 including the entire campaign in and around Detroit which ended with Hull's surrender not only of Detrit and the forces directly under his command but for some reason of detached troops under McArthur's command which particularly enraged McArthur. Tipped in is the handwritten order a letter of summons from Inspector General Abimael Youngs Nicoll to Brigadier General Duncan McArthur commanding his appearance at General Hull's court martial letter is dated December 2nd 1813 and includes the folded envelope addressed to McArthur. Light foxing in places; cloth has light surface wear else a Very Good copy. The President of the Court was Major General Henry Dearborn and the special Judge Advocate was Martin van Buren later President of the United States. There is a signature on the title page somewhat reminiscent of Van Buren's during this period appearing to read 'M.v.B illegible'. Additional provenance: Later the property of Brig. General Thomas McArthur Anderson copy grandson of Brig Gen. Duncan McArthur with his signature to the title page pg. 19 and the last page of text. General Anderson had four decades of decorated service 1861-1900 extending from his rise to brevet rank of Lt. Colonel during the Civil War to command of the Army force sent to Skagway and Dyea Alaska to protect American miners heading to the Klondike Gold Rush to his command of the first 'Philippine Expeditionary Force' during the Spanish-American War. During the Philippine campaign he was promoted to the brevet Major General of U.S. Volunteers two stars and retired as a Brigadier General. Eastburn, Kirk and Co hardcover

Army Air Forces Intelligence School
WORLD WAR II AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHY Aircraft Performance: Performance Data of Current Operational Aircraft
Harrisburg PA: Army Air Forces Intelligence School 1943. Very good. Quarto unpaginated about 100pp. illustrated with 83 original tipped-in photographs and an envelope containing 13 more loose and unidentified images laid-in. Housed in the original cardstock clasped folder. Many of the pages have a bottom fold which does not fully open without the potential to tear though all of the contents can be read with some effort. Some pages a touch foxed and a few prints are loosened from their pages and laid-in in the right place. Overall in very good condition. A well-organized and illustrated military textbook for a wartime class on aircraft identification which was probably taught in many places but organized at the US Army Air Force base in Harrisburg. An introductory sheet in perfect bureaucratic fashion placed near the end of this textbook states: "The course in Aircraft Identification consists of ten hours spaced over a period of six weeks." It goes on to list a series of 42 aircraft--American German Italian French and Japanese--which will be easily identified by all successful students by the end of the course.

The first few dozen pages consist of detailed folding charts with data on dimensions payloads etc. Another section of about 12pp. gives a background on various best practices when trying to identify aircraft as well as some of the principles behind the course.

The course utilized the "WEFT" system wings engine fuselage tail to help individuals soldiers intelligence agents etc. identify planes in the field from various angles at different heights and in certain contexts. Most of the pages dedicated to individual planes contain two photographs from different angles and with different shading trying to mimic real battlefield conditions under which someone might try to identify an aircraft.

An unusually engaging wartime military textbook appealing to photography aviation and military collectors alike. Not located in OCLC thus notably absent in the holdings of the Army War College Library which retains most technical manuals and course books. Army Air Forces Intelligence School unknown

Camouflage Section, the Engineer Board [US Army]
Studies of Housing for a Dispersed Airdrome Camouflage Memorandum III
Fort Belvoir VA: Camouflage Section the Engineer Board US Army 1942. Staplebound. Near fine. Small quarto unpaginated 32pp. illustrated. A crisp clean copy near fine in the publisher's stapled wraps. Some pencil writing to wraps else clean. Very uncommon and well-illustrated WWII military volume which gives provisional designs and theoritical principles to undergird a military barracks/airfield which would be camouflaged as typical American buildings like homes or barns. probably one of thousands of similar studies which may have been used if the combat of World War II had come to American shores. OCLC locates three copies; 2 at US military institutions and another in Canada. Rare and likely of interest to architecture enthusiasts or geography scholars as much as military historians. Northwest Service Command (US Army)
WORLD WAR II ALASKA WESTERN CANADA ENTERTAINMENT Northwest Service Command Presents Frosty Follies of 44: A Soldier Show show program
no place given possibly Fairbanks AK: Northwest Service Command US Army 1944. First Edition. Folded sheet. Very good. Square quarto. 4pp. Folded handbill measuring about 6.5" x 8" 16.5cm x 20cm when folded. In very good condition with an inch-long closed tear at the spine and gentle creasing to extremities. Rare ephemeral document from the wilds of Alaska and Western Canada during World War II. US servicemen in the Army Corps of Engineers along with their Canadian counterparts were enlisted to construct a highway between the Yukon Territory and Fairbanks Alaska in the event of military engagements in Alaska during World War II. This handbill is an excellent primary source which documents how they spent their time outside of their daily work. The "Frosty Follies of 44" was a kind of revue featuring soldiers from the outfit along with some "USO girls." Included on the rear wrap are the full lyrics to "Song of the Highway" which must have been a kind of anthem for those constructing the thing. Highly ephemeral; we note no holdings in OCLC and presume it to be a lone survivor. Great piece of World War II Alaskiana. [Northwest Service Command, US Army] unknown
